Des Teufels Bad - OST

Austrian artist and music producer, Soap&Skin presents the original score from the film Des Teufels Bad (The Devil’s Bath), directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Anja Plaschg is central to this cinematic project as she also appears in the leading role in this feature film, in the period drama which premieres at Berlinale in February 2024. The Devil’s Bath gives a voice to the invisible and unheard women of the rural past; it portrays the harshness of their daily lives defined by religious dogma and taboos which still resonate down the ages. A film based on historical court records about a shocking, hitherto unexplored chapter of European history. Soap&Skin about the process of writing the music for a period film: « Veronika, Severin and I quickly agreed that we wanted historical timbres, i.e. a sound world that refers to the period, not necessarily to Austria, and also points to the present. For example, I incorporated a historical flute from Armenia called a duduk played by played by Veronika Vitazkova and worked with Matthias Loibner, who is dedicated to this wonderful instrument called hurdy-gurdy. This time I used my own voice spherically for Agnes’ inner voices, for example with a scream that keeps recurring as a protracted tone.» Deep, haunting and disturbing, the music gives flesh and blood to this psychodramatic film.

    Tenor Saw / Nardo Ranks

Ring The Alarm / Skin Out

Dancehall originals don't get much bigger than this one! Based around Winston Riley's "Stalag Riddim" (also used by Dillinger, Sister Nancy, Big Youth & General Echo to name a few!), "Ring The Alarm" contains one of the most iconic vocal deliveries of the era. Toasted by Tenor Saw, and containing his infamous vocal fx (r-r-r-olling his 'R's,) it's an empowering, feel-good sound system record - not dealing with anything heavy like politics or babylon - just a call to arms to get everyone on the dancefloor - and it works 100% of the time! Massive everywhere from Kingston, London, Manchester, NYC... anywhere with an urban environment and multicultural legacy you're gonna hear this blasting outta the stacks come carnival season!

On side B we get the original dub on by Winston Riley which really makes you focus on that bass weight, whilst funky organ solos and heavy guitar chops fill out the space. Finally we get a rub-a-dub dancehall style by Nardo Ranks who takes cues from Barington Levy and Eek A Mouse with his non-stop toasting through the track leaving us breathless and obviously playing a small part in fueling the embryonic soup that would become hip-hop.

        Evans McRae

        Only Skin

Evans McRae is the new venture of seasoned songwriters Lowri Evans and Tom McRae. Both successful solo artists, this new collaboration sees them join forces (and voices) on a stunning suite of songs. Having met on a songwriters’ retreat organised by McRae’s friend and fellow Mercury Prize nominee, Kathryn Williams, the two found they shared a love of crafted but emotionally powerful songs. After many trips between Pembrokeshire and McRae’s West Country home, the pair realised they weren’t writing songs for other artists, they’d actually written an album for themselves. Lowri and her partner (multi-instrumentalist Lee Mason) decamped to Studio Owz, a beautiful converted chapel deep in the Pembrokeshire countryside, and together with McRae and his long-serving band, recorded the album in the pre-pandemic summer of 2019.

A permanent feature on Welsh radio, and favourite of Bob Harris and Janice Long, Lowri has built a large and loyal audience for her brand of beautiful songwriting. Mercury and Brit Award nominee, Tom has proved an enduring talent over his 8 solo albums. His touring success in Europe and use of his songs on film and tv continues to broaden his fan base outside of the UK. Says McRae: “We sat down and wrote with no agenda. Some songs are heartbroken ballads, some big cinematic soundscapes, and some are good old pop songs. We’ve both been doing this a long time. When you put aside egos and selfish ambition, you realise that the only thing that matters is the quality of the songs. In the end they told us what to do”.

            Soap & Skin

From Gas To Solid / You Are My Friend

Third album from Soap&Skin, the working moniker for the Austrian musician and producer Anja Plaschg. Her first record in six years.

The album belatedly follows the release of ‘Lovetune For Vacuum’ in 2009 and 2012’s ‘Narrow’ (an Austrian No 1) but in that time in between the artist has been busy, not least with the birth of her daughter and subsequent motherhood but as well with many other creative works such as composing for theatre and film productions, as well as film acting.

Encompassing a range of musical allegiances, the album is infused with tranquil electronica, militaristic percussion, whilst coupled with choral ambience and earthy ethereal grandeur. This is an expansive, stunning, wide-reaching piece of dynamic beauty.

Recorded mainly at her home in a quiet leafy corner of Vienna, the album is not only self-produced but selfplayed.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Encompassing the beautiful, softly spoken vocals of Rozi Plain or Icelandic electronic genius' Múm, Soap & Skin tread a fine line between choral ambience and soaring modern-classical, often within the space of a minute or two. A bogglingly competant, and ridiculously diverse smörgåsbord of sound.

Nocturnal Habits marks a return for influential guitarist / vocalist Justin Trosper. His work in the seminal post hardcore band Unwound and more recently the angular rock of Survival Knife are evident in the overall sound of ‘New Skin For Old Children’ his debut album for Glacial Pace.

There is a new tone, however, focused more sharply on the songwriting and production. The angles have been softened to create crushing, blunt force blows rather than sharp cuts.

Recorded throughout the world from Italy to Los Angeles and the backwoods of the Northwest, ‘New Skin For Old Children’ reunites Trosper with Sara Lund, his Unwound collaborator and so called ‘secret weapon’, as well as Dale Crover (Melvins), Sherry Fraser, and Scott Seckington (Two Ton Boa).

            Flume

            Skin

In 2012, with only one single (‘Sleepless’) and one remix (Hermitude’s ‘Hyperparadise’) to his name, a young beatmaker called Flume was given an afternoon slot at Splendour In The Grass. Flash forward four years and Flume is back - this time as a multi-platinum selling, ARIA award-winning, sought-after collaborator (Lorde, Disclosure, Chet Faker, Vince Staples) and internationally recognised producer.

A master of crafting complex, intelligent, original productions, 2016 sees Flume return to the spotlight with the muchanticipated ‘Skin’ album, via Transgressive Records.

‘Skin’ features such global superstars as Beck, Vic Mensa and the UK’s own AlunaGeorge.

Lead track ‘Never Be Like You’ (featuring Kai) roared to the top of the Australian singles charts and has gone on to become a genuine global hit.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is best known for popularizing the southern hard-rock genre during the 1970s. The band rose to worldwide recognition on the basis of its driving live performances and signature tunes "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird".

Following on from the vinyl box set released in January; the six albums are now available individually with exact reproductions of original artwork to retain authenticity pressed on 180 gram heavyweight audiophile vinyl with download card included.

                Shedding Skin

Ghostpoet is pleased to announce his forthcoming album ‘Shedding Skin’.

The first fruits of the album, the track ‘Off Peak Dreams’ has already been premiered on Zane Lowe’s Radio One show and sees Ghostpoet, London-based Obaro Ejimiwe moving on from the cathartic musings of 2013’s ‘Some Say I So I Say Light’ album.

‘Shedding Skin’ is the manifestation of a new challenge of fresh thinking and a brave confident stride into previously uncharted waters. Ten songs that embrace, unite and narrate observations that are designed to sit beside each other through bright peaks and dark shallows.

Unlike his previous albums, ‘Shedding Skin’ was recorded with a traditional live set up with what has become his touring band; Joe Newman on guitar, bass player John Calvert and John Blease on drums.

The self-produced album also features guest vocals from Nadine Shah, Etta Bond, Melanie De Biasio, Lucy Rose and Maxïmo Park’s Paul Smith, amounting in a collection that sets a new precedent as his very best work yet.

                  O'Death

                  Broken Hymns, Limbs And Skin

New York quintet O'Death's third album, "Broken Hymns, Limbs And Skin", feels like a giddy junkyard hoedown, from the panicked fiddle screeches of opener "Lowtide" to the celebratory gallop of closer "Lean-To". At times it sounds morose or contemplative, but underneath the melancholy is a gospel fervour — bashed from paint buckets, banjos, guitars and anything else in kicking distance — that defines their sound. Since 2007's "Head Home", the band have evolved the possessed Americana-meets-gypsy-punk of recent years into a more urgent, unrelenting celebration of life, death and everything in between. They've grown up a little, but haven't lost the underlying longing or the unruly jubilation in their songs.

                  Pre

Epic Fits (Limited Metal Box Edition)

Born in a basement, based in London, the first outing of Pre had the entire audience locked outside, watching through barred windows from above. To the assemblage up top, it was clear that these five noise sprinkled nu-wavers had already figured it out - sound moves quicker in high pressure. And now, weighing 14 songs, "Epic Fits" is born. Recorded in a chilly pizza storage unit with Westminster Brown at the controls, Pre's full length is cold sweat caught on two inch tape. Guitar, bass, bass, drum and moon shriek: Pre make the noise jump. Pre are a band people are talking about - fronted by Comanechi's vocalist, they were asked to appear on Rough Trade's "Counter Culture" compilation CD and made waves on a sold out tour with the Gossip.
