Seahawks

Eyes Of The Moon - Piccadilly Exclusive Violet Coloured Vinyl

From their coastal studio in Cornwall, Seahawks deliver a collection of mystic pop, sparkling new age and psychedelic ambience. Since forming in 2009, the UK duo (consisting of visual artist Pete Fowler and prolific musician / Lo Recordings label co-founder Jon Tye) has steadily accrued an impressive catalogue, spanning several albums and including collaborations with Laraaji, Peaking Lights, Laurel Halo and more. Eyes Of The Moon, their latest album as Seahawks — and their first for Cascine — is a transportive aural journey.

    FORMAT INFORMATION

Coloured LP Info: Exclusive transparent violet coloured vinyl.
This is only available via Cascine's webstore / Bandcamp and ourselves.

Travel agents for inner journeys, Seahawks take us on a voyage ever deeper into the new age vortex. Their last album "Escape Hatch", described by Vice as a ‘modern masterpiece’ only hinted at the transcendent power of Seahawks' music. "Eternal Beams" goes further to create a whole new harmonial experience.

Side one sees the listener immersed in a soft storm of tape saturated raindrops and distant thunder, numinous waves of sound cascading to create whirlpools of womb-like warmth with gentle pulsations. Side two sees new age maestro Laraaji contribute flocculent flows of golden zither, rich vocal vibrations & dolphin tones in phantasy phase, all coalescing generously, bringing feelings of rebirth and light.

To conclude: a wondrous journey of resonant oscillations, inner exploration, a portal to other dimensions. It's Seahawks as we know and love them - entheogenic experts with sound and groove.

Seahawks return with their deepest album to date. A masterful blend of Berlin-School electronics and post ECM New Age fusion. Finis Africae meets Harold Budd downtown.

Escape Hatch is the fourth studio album by Seahawks, recorded over the last 18 months and drawing inspiration from Innovative Communications Berlin School electronics, ECM and Windham Hill releases by the likes of Mark Isham, Jan Garbarek and Interior and the New Age synth sounds of Iasos, Deuter and William Aura.

The album opens with sheets of soft white noise, which give way to Budd like treated piano and fretless bass before super saturated saxophone tones and rippling sequences cascade over the listener like a summer downpour.

Seahawks trademark tropical vibes continue throughout the album but there’s a constantly changing panorama of moods and tones, from the deeply emotive Missed with its widescreen synth and sax interplay that recall Vangelis’ Blade Runner soundtrack to the epic scope of White Horses with it’s almost Popul Vuh like mantric outro and Starways it’s distorted flugel horn like a ghost from Talk Talk’s Spirit Of Eden.

At the very end of the (CD) album there’s another twist. A cover of the obscure Balearic hit Valparaiso by Paula Moore, with a Nassau groove, surprise guest vocal and a twinkle in its eye, it provides a suitably eclectic yet ethereal ending.

Once again Seahawks have created a world to get lost in, an Escape Hatch - if you need it, come get it, here it is.

Initial pre-orders of both vinyl and CD come with bonus disc "20 Hot Tub Greats PT.3".

Seahawks have inadvertently created the perfect summer album in "Deep Haul" and in typically obtuse style, released it in October. Then again, it's as the nights draw in that you need those summer vibes most. That’s not to say the music here is all bright and breezy, as the title suggests this is a deep trip. Some tracks, like Cassini Division’s "Sea Caves", are narcotic to the point of collapse. Opening with two long lost mastercuts from Ruf Dug and Begin the album continues into uncharted territory with an epic re-work of "Electric Water Falls" by Secret Circuit and a beautifully melancholic version of "Moon Turn Tides" by post dubstep maestro Mokadem which lays bare Maria Minerva's mournful vocals before we're transported on a wild ride to the cosmic frontier by Japan’s Sapphire Slows who take Peaking Lights Indra ‘Drifting’ into an avant wonderland. There’s also extreme goodness from the ever wonderful Prins Thomas, Foreversound, Pye Corner Audio, Captain Sunshine, Rune Lindbaek and Seahawks themselves. This a great album for sitting on the beach, taking DMT or doing the washing up.

Tusk Wax return with debutant Tim Waine at the controls as we swap synthetic safari for aquatic audio. We hop aboard submersival TW14 off the coast of Arkhangelsk and head deep into the icy darkness of the White Sea. Our captain slips a scuffed old DAT into the control panel and bombards us with the industrial gloom of "No Hats", a malevolent chugger rippling with pressure changes and sonar sweeps, only punctured by the echoed messages from the marine base on shore. As we sink to 20,000 leagues under the sea, a new world begins to emerge around our craft. Cystalline formations, enlightened species and ethereal beauty warp and glisten as the healing sounds of Seahawks' 'Dive Deeper Mix' permeates the gloom and lights up the depths. On the Ocean floor, the temperature drops to the fringes of freezing point and all light is distinguished leaving us in complete isolation. The melancholic paranoia of "Maybe You're Awake" encapsulates the fear and loneliness of midnight dark perfectly in five minutes of soundscaped tension. And what lies beneath, you may ask? As our journey continues into the ancient unknown, the future primative sounds of "The Sun Came Out Last Night" fill the vessel with mystic beauty. Pulsating sequences and ritualistic percussion lay a foundation for fevered chants and wails. It's a brave new world out there.

Seahawks have been a ‘best kept secret’ since 2009. Having got together to create their own particular style of ‘cosmic music’ back then, the duo of Jon Tye and Pete Fowler have released a seemingly unstoppable wave of music on limited edition vinyl in hand printed sleeves, cassette, picture disc and even mini disc. Seahawks have remixed artists including The Horrors, Badly Drawn Boy, Tim Burgess, Rune Lindbaek and The Advisory Circle. They host a regular ‘boat party’ in London where guests Ulrich Schnauss, Tom Furse et al are free to play whatever the hell they like. Their few live shows have taken place in London, Manchester and Japan.

Seahawks were formed when Jon Tye invited Pete Fowler to spin some discs with him at a party. While playing, they discovered they both loved the seemingly incompatible genres of free electronic noise and smooth AOR soft rock. It was the fusion of these two disparate elements that lead to the first Seahawks release ‘Omega Beach’, a record that fused Oneohtrix Point Never’s tripped out synths with Don Henley’s Deadhead quoting anthem ‘Boy’s Of Summer’. Subsequent releases have explored all manner of West Coast/soft rock sounds mixed with sprawling freeform improvisations to create deep listening epics like ‘Spaceships Over Topanga Canyon’ and ‘Tender Abyss’.

In 2011 Seahawks were offered some free studio time. Faced with a room full of drums, guitars and keyboards, the duo called on some fellow travellers to help create the sound they’d been hearing in their heads for so long. The result is ‘Paradise Freaks’. While some tracks even resemble conventional songs, others stretch right out and explore the far reaches of the universe. It’s the kind of record Jonathan Wilson might have made if he’d grown up listening to Cluster, Cerrone and Jerry Garcia or if Connan Mockasin had ended up on stage jamming with a prime time Doobie Brothers.

Recording with a core group featuring Al Doyle (Hot Chip / LCD Soundsystem) on bass and guitar Rob Smoughton (Hot Chip / Grovesnor) on drums and guitar and Kenny Dickenson (KT Tunstall / Red Ken) on keys, Seahawks invited some of their favourite singers to contribute vocals. Maria Minerva, Tim Burgess, Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights and missing-in-action psychedelic songsmith Nick Nicely all added their unmistakeable tones. A set of final overdubs from Tom Furse (The Horrors) and some tinkering from Seahawks’ regular Cornish musical mates sealed the deal. The whole process took time but what is time when faced with the epic expanse of the cosmos - a cosmos full of soft tones and brilliant corners, unexpected collisions, warm openings, deep colours and fresh textures.
