Kammerkonzert

Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher, presents 'Kammerkonzert', a riot of onyx-hard, hyperfast riffs, fiendish orchestral themes, and handbrake turns through varieties of progressive, ambient, electronic and experimental music.

The singular hardcore rave / IDM producer, experimental musician and creator of futuristic forms of fusion, has a three-decade-long back catalogue studded with a variety of jewel-like records. From the furious breakbeat acid and pulverising live bass guitar attack of 'Feed Me Weird Things' (1996) to the literal and self-explanatory 'Music For Robots' (2014) via the virtuosic live showcase of 'Solo Electric Bass 1' (2009) and the otherworldly concrète jazz of 'Ultravisitor' (2004) few contemporary musicians have covered as much ground in as sure-footed a manner. But despite this reach, his three decade output is only typified by two things: unpredictability and rule breaking. Given that his new album on Warp, 'Kammerkonzert', is essentially a chamber concerto with him playing all of the parts it’s safe to say he has come a long way since his crystalline drum & bass debut for the label in 1996, 'Port Rhombus' EP.

Twenty-one albums in, 'Kammerkonzert' is the start of a new era for Squarepusher as a composer.

    Stereotype - 2025 Reissue

Originally self-released under the artist name ‘Stereotype’ in 1994, this album is an hour of raw, dancefloor-focused early Squarepusher productions, fuelled by pirate radio and rave, remastered from the original tapes and recut as 2 x LPs – available for the first time since the limited run of of 12’’s in 1994.

The sleeve has been updated to contain rare photos, flyers and musical notation from the Squarepusher archives.

A companion of sorts to the debut Squarepusher album Feed Me Weird Things, which was recorded around the same time before emerging on Rephlex Records in 1996.

      Ultravisitor (Remastered Edition)

An album beloved by fans since its release in March 2004, 'Ultravisitor' is one of the most popular records in Squarepusher’s entire discography. A unique blend of studio and live recordings, it’s an excellent showcase for the diversity of his music: from the frenetic title track to the funky jazz of 'Iambic 9 Poetry' to the sunlit bliss of 'Tommib Help Buss' and beyond.

Following last year’s 20th-anniversary expanded deluxe reissue, the standalone remastered edition is now widely available. Carefully remastered from the original tapes by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering and overseen by Tom Jenkinson—who was never entirely happy with the original release—this edition brings fresh dynamics and details in the tracks.

          Squarepusher

          Dostrotime

Dostrotime is Squarepusher-style fun. Heavy, intense, tear out experimental electronic music for the sheer exhilaration of it. Unapologetically, one for the Squarepunter Massive! In early 2020, Squarepusher had just released Be Up A Hello to huge acclaim, and was gearing up for a worldwide tour featuring some of his biggest shows to date. Then the pandemic hit, and it was all off… Devoid of distractions, naturally the artist headed to the studio to begin recording. He says that “[...]Without customary interruptions, time elapsed differently”. It’s an episode he’s dubbed “Dostrotime”. As such, Dostrotime is an attempt to capture the peculiarity of music catalysed by lockdown being part of the celebration of lockdown’s demise.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A finely crafted suite of pummeling beats, gradually morphing sonic landscapes rendered in crystalline percussion and rolling, frenetic bass. It's Squarepusher we're talking about here, so it's not exactly 'The Best Of Brahms' but there's maybe a little *less* madness than usual? Maybe not. It's ace though.

Feed Me Weird Things - 25th Anniversary Edition

Warp Records reissue Squarepusher’s debut album "Feed Me Weird Things", virtually 25 years to the day from its original release in ‘96. First released on the now inactive Rephlex label, the album has not been available on streaming platforms until now and has been out of print for more than a decade. This complete edition has been remastered from the original DATs and features two extra tracks which were first released on the B-side of the “Squarepusher Plays… EP” and later featured on the original Japanese release of this album. The edition also includes a 16 page booklet with personal photographs, ephemera and candid notes from Tom Jenkinson, throwing light on the early days of his career.

The release follows “Be Up A Hello”, Squarepusher’s 2020 album that was filled with buoyant, dancefloor driven tracks which featured some of the same analogue and digital hardware that was used on “Feed Me Weird Things”. “Be Up A Hello” was also driven by the same hedonistic energy which is perfectly encapsulated in this pioneering album, the first tracks of which he recorded when he was only 19 years old.

Musically, “Feed Me Weird Things” is more expansive than the electronic sub-genres it was hemmed into at the time, as it was the first release where Tom Jenkinson highlighted his virtuosic bass playing. Like much of his output after, it also showcases disarmingly intricate melodic composition like on “Squarepusher Theme” and extraordinarily complex rhythmic sequences i.e. on “Tundra” whilst retaining an impressive cadence.

The album was a key release for Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) and Grant Wilson-Claridge’s Rephlex label and has gone on to be regarded as one of Squarepusher’s best. As well as a close friendship there was perhaps a bit of healthy competition between Squarepusher and Aphex Twin at the time (!Hangable Auto Bulb” was released in ‘95 and is cited as an influence). However, strong jazz influences and accomplished bass playing set Tom apart from his contemporaries. Richard curated the track list for “Feed Me Weird Things” from tapes that Tom had given him and the record includes sleeve notes written by him too, the only time he has done so for another artist.

“The Squarepusher is someone who wonders what the holes of a flute sound like without the flute. Sound like sound never sounded before, Richard Rodgers and Julie Andrews gave us the Sound of music, John Cage and Simon and Garfunkel gave us the Sound of silence and now the Squarepusher gives us the SOUND of SOUND.” - PRichard.D.Jams (taken from the original ‘Feed Me Weird Things’ sleevenotes)

After a 5 year hiatus that has seen him delve into a range of diverse musical projects, Squarepusher returns with a long awaited album, "Be Up A Hello".

With this new album, Tom Jenkinson has returned to using a bewildering array of vintage analogue and digital hardware, the same equipment that first helped him develop his sound in the early '90s. Something of a 180 degree turn, these synths, effects units and even a Commodore Vic20 are in complete contrast to the tools he used to create 2015’s "Damogen Furies" - cutting edge software that Tom developed over the course of 15 years. The result is "Be Up A Hello", an album that is celebratory with rinsing breakbeat tracks such as "Nervelevers" and "Terminal Slam" - classic floor fillers - as well pieces loaded with visceral atmosphere and melody in Squarepusher’s inimitable style. Darker moments such as "Vortrack" and "Mekrev Bass" illustrate Tom's continuing fascination with finely balanced psychological overload. As such, "Be Up A Hello" gives a nod to the mayhem, joyousness and abandon of the DIY Essex rave scene that was a strong determinant in Tom's work.

            Hello Everything

The title of Squarepusher's latest opus itself prepares us for the playful palette of sounds brilliantly assembled on this stunning record. There's drum'n'bass, electronica, jazzy breakbeats, ambient soundscapes, speed-freak slapped jazz-rock basslines, climactic prog synth playing and even a smattering of Spanish guitar. As Tom Jenkinson says himself, 'the album's full of tunes'.

              Squarepusher

              Music Is Rotted One Note

With sparkling Rhodes keyboard work, speed-fuelled jazz breaks and fluid basslines, Squarepusher's 1998 album pays homage to his jazz-rock roots. These sounds are woven into the fabric of IDM electronica album in true Warp style.
