True Electric

'True Electric' gathers together 19 studio versions of the music from Röyksopp’s True Electric tour in 2023, featuring previously unreleased track 'The “R”' as well as newly-reworked versions of originals and remixes taken from their acclaimed catalogue. These include the celebrated Robyn collaboration 'Do It Again' featuring Robyn (from the 2014 Röyksopp & Robyn EP 'Do It Again') and 'Running To The Sea' featuring Susanne Sundfør (from the 2014 Röyksopp album 'The Inevitable End'), as well as several tracks from their critically acclaimed 'Profound Mysteries' creative universe that resulted in three albums released throughout 2022.

Speaking about the album, Svein and Torbjørn explain: “'True Electric' consists of recordings and renditions, meant to capture the essence of our live shows bearing the same name. The idea was to put an emphasis on the clubbier aspects of our music, as well as returning to our roots within the realms of electronic music.”

    Profound Mysteries III

Profound Mysteries III will bring the acclaimed series to a climax, having worked with a cast of global visual and musical collaborators to create an incredible 30 tracks, 30 artefacts, 30 visualisers and 30 films that have been revealed throughout the year.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The final and arguably most impactful piece in Röyksopp's stunning 'Profound Mysteries' collection. A mix of technical electronica, shadowy dub and immersive ambient into a dynamically complex, but wonderfully listenable whole. Another top release from Röyksopp.

        Profound Mysteries II

“‘Profound Mysteries II’ is a direct continuation of the first instalment. Reoccurring themes such as love & loss, despair & reconciliation, is wrapped up in an esoteric nod to those artists and genres that shaped us in our formative years.” - Svein Berge & Torbjørn Brundtland

Electronic pop trailblazers, Röyksopp, announce the second part to their expansive Profound Mysteries project, ‘Profound Mysteries II’, which will be available on 19th August.

Berge and Brundtland describe Profound Mysteries as the biggest undertaking of Röyksopp’s career. It both encapsulates the unique sound they’ve spent decades honing, and expands on it. It’s a bold look to the future, and an homage to the artists, genres, and musical movements that first inspired them. It’s a project they’ve spent their whole lives making (the oldest ideas date back to the early days of Röyksopp, literally using MIDI data first composed by the band when they were teenagers in the 1990s), and it’s brand new.

Back in those early days, pioneers Berge and Brundtland immersed themselves in the Tromsø techno scene, a pivotal era in Norway’s electronic music history, and later formed Röyksopp during another fertile creative period known as the Bergen Wave; many of the artists who emerged in both scenes became vital creative partners throughout Röyksopp’s career. Their debut album Melody A.M. (released in 2001) would become a breakout success from the scene and led to an influential career that has taken in five studio albums, dozens of international hit singles, and numerous Grammy, BRIT nominations and Spellemannprisen awards. This is all without mentioning a raft of acclaimed remixes for artists including Depeche Mode, Beck, Lady Gaga and Coldplay, and their production and songwriting work, or their timeless collaborations with the likes of Robyn, Lykke Li, and The Knife/Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson.

Profound Mysteries is characterised by its wealth of collaborations. As always, Berge and Brundtland wrote, performed, and engineered the majority of the record together in Norway, though their collaborations span the world. On Profound Mysteries Röyksopp recorded strings and woodwind in New York, Berlin, and Paris, while guest vocals come from both familiar artists in the Röyksopp universe (Susanne Sundfør) as well as new additions (Allison Goldfrapp, Beki Mari, Astrid S, Karen Harding, Pixx and Jamie Irrepressible).

          Profound Mysteries I

“As human beings, what we don’t know vastly overshadows what we do know. As teenagers, we would discuss our own fascination and preoccupation with the infinite and the impossible – the most profound mysteries of life.” Svein Berge & Torbjørn Brundtland

Röyksopp unveil Profound Mysteries, an expanded creative universe and a prodigious conceptual project.

On January 1st, 2022 Röyksopp launched the film (Nothing But) Ashes… and fans were encouraged to Press «R». Alongside the Kasper Häggström-directed short film BJA, a second piece of music, The Ladder, was released. A new artefact and visualiser, created by Australian contemporary artist Jonathan Zawada, brought the music to life. All elements are accessible through the Profound Mysteries portal. A premiere of The Downfall by Marc Reisbig f0llowed, and another chapter was revealed with Impossible featuring Alison Goldfrapp—the first human voice to be heard on Profound Mysteries. A third artefact and visualiser designed by Jonathan Zawada expanded the collection.

"Lost Tapes" is a monthly release of rare B-sides, exclusives & even some previously unreleased tracks.

'Upon renovating our arctic chateau here in the desolate north, we came across an old sea chest containing an abundance of rare B-sides, exclusives & even some previously unreleased tracks.'

The first clutch of these tracks is available here on limited & number 2xLP and it's a rather spectacular affair. Drfiting dreamily from electronic textures into their driving, expansive, cinematic vision and occassionally drafting in some pop angel for a casual vocal utterance.

For long term fans, this is thorough excavation of this cult and iconic duo. Boosted with extra online content and with more volumes to comes, it's nice to relive the weightless bliss and electronic pop decadance this Finnish act injected into the world.

            The Understanding

After three years of being second only to Air in the advert and TV backing music stakes, the Norwegian duo now return with their follow up to the all conquering "Melody AM" of 2002. "The Understanding" seems to distil a whole host of influences and styles (70s and 80s pop and rock, electronica, easy listening etc) into a cohesive, lush and ethereal sound instantly recogniseable as their own.
