Second Time Round - 2023 Reissue

In 1973, with the release of ‘Second Time Round,’ Cymande solidified their place in music history. As children of the Windrush Generation, they were part of the first wave of innovators and originators of the fledgling Black British music scene. Taking influences from their Guyanese and Jamaican roots, the band fused reggae bass lines, Afro-tinged Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic rock touches, and American style funk instrumentation into a unique sound they dubbed as “Nyah-rock.” Recorded while the band was fresh off a US tour with Al Green, ‘Second Time Around’ was the follow up to their self-titled debut and firmly planted the band in the ears of an adoring US audience. Their debut was the first UK soul album to land on the Billboard charts, and ‘Second Time Round’ placed them back on the US charts again.

    Mark Hodkinson

No One Round Here Reads Tolstoy : Memoirs Of A Working-Class Reader

Mark Hodkinson grew up among the terrace houses of Rochdale in a house with just one book. Today, Mark is an author, journalist and publisher. He still lives in Rochdale but is now surrounded by 3,500 titles, at the last count.

No One Round Here Reads Tolstoy is his story of growing up a working-class lad during the 1970s and 1980s. It's about the schools, the music, the people - but pre-eminently and profoundly the books and authors that led the way and shaped his life. It's about a family who didn't see the point of reading, and a troubled grandad who taught Mark the power of stories.

It's also a story of how writing and reading has changed over the last five decades.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: This is a fantastic book. A beautifully written tale of growing up in a northern town in the 70s and 80s and discovering the power of books and music. There's also a lovely thread running through the book of Mark's relationship with his grandad. Maybe it resonated so much with me as I'm of a similar age, but I think regardless of when or where you grew up, this is a really wonderful read.

      Ella Fitzgerald

'Round Midnight - Songs For Lovers

Known worldwide as "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald was one of the finest female jazz vocalists of all time. Blessed with a highly resonant voice, wide range, and near-perfect diction, she was famous for her infectious swing and her imaginative scat singing. Ella was also a highly talented interpreter of ballads, as proved by the selections heard on the present album, on which she is backed by small groups including such masters as Oscar Peterson, Lou Levy, Paul Smith, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Louie Bellson, among others.

        'round Midnight

A chance first time meeting one morning in Block 9 at Glastonbury 2022 between Graham Massey and Nice Swan Records lead to this serendipitous release between London newcomers Malady and Hacienda legends 808 State. Fitting in line with Malady's remix packages over the last 18 months this seemed like the perfect alignment between old and new.

The original is a jaunty, electrified indie-dancer number powered by fast AFX-ish beats and high voltage synthesizers with a yearning male vocal that's a bit like Moving Units (remember them?).

Remixing their own track, Malady emphasis the top drawer synthesis- - deploying wubbing Reeses, precision breaks and ricocheting rave stabs - nice!

Onto the 808 State side and it's a highly engineered bleeps and breaks workout with advanced sound design and almost Autechre-like drum programming; weaving around the vocal track like a mechanized snake whilst bombarding the listener with a barrage of snares. Their instrumental, as you can imagine, does away with the vocal part and really let's that drum assault hammer home.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Proudly current indie-dance act Malady strike an amazing partnership with 808 State for this rather mesmerizing 12" which perfectly balances intricate sound design with anthemic song writing.

        A Round Of Applause

Time after time, we all talk about … well, time — often in aphorisms and cliches. X is “a waste of time,” while Y is “time well spent.” We are all apt to lose track of time but, perhaps in equal measure, we have plenty of time on our hands. We think we have all the time in the world -- until we remember that time flies, after which our time runs out and we’re dead (for a long time).

Since 2020, internal clocks have had to be readjusted with the pace of life ebbing and flowing. For Los Angeles psych-rock sextet Hooveriii (pronounced "Hoover Three") that adjustment seeped its way into their songwriting and ultimately their forthcoming album, A Round of Applause.

The record cherrypicks from an array of genres — pop, girl-group ditties, synth-ish keyboards and funk —but the end result is a cohesive long-player with songs that revolve around the Spanish Inquisition (“Stone Man”); or follow “the legendary Peruvians who run long distances in the Andes Mountains (“The Runner”). “I let my imagination run wild,” Hoover said. Elsewhere on A Round of Applause, the Hooveriii frontman finally recorded a song, “The Pearl,” that he wrote in 2017. “It sounds like a Harry Nilsson jingle like to me, a fantasy song,” he continued. “It's more like a nursery rhyme than a song with an important message. You know, it's just like keeping things fun. … Nilsson didn’t take everything so fucking seriously. We want to avoid that self-seriousness. We're a bunch of goofy musicians.”

            Unify

The Grammy-nominated six-piece — Adam Deitch (drums), Ryan Zoidis (saxophone), Adam ‘Shmeeans’ Smirnoff (guitar), Erick ‘Jesus’ Coomes (bass), Nigel Hall (keyboards/vocals), Eric ‘Benny’ Bloom (trumpet) — will be deliver a whole host of new tunes to the world in the form of 'Unify,' the eighth studio album from Lettuce and the third consecutive record made at Denver’s Colorado Sound Studios, completing a loose trilogy starting with 2019’s Grammy-nominated Elevate, and continuing with 2020’s Resonate.

Fans can expect the same tight, wildly-funky instrumentals Lettuce has always been known for, but in the tightest form they’ve ever taken. And this time around, the guys have gotten the stamp of approval from one of the genre’s most legendary icons, Mr. Bootsy Collins, himself, who can be heard singing on the track “Keep That Funk Alive.” “Dealing with the pandemic, being in separate places, trying to survive without our best friends, without touring, not to mention the political divide in this country,” says Deitch.

              Ornette Coleman

              Round Trip

iconoclastic saxophonist and composer ornette coleman shook the jazz world when he arrived at the five spot café in new york city in 1959 and began his run of seminal albums on atlantic that laid the foundation for the free jazz movement to come.

after a period of disillusionment during which he withdrew from public music making, coleman re-emerged on blue note in 1966 and began writing an intriguing new chapter of his legendary career. the boxset round trip: ornette coleman on blue note presents all-analog 180g tone poet vinyl editions of all six albums featuring coleman that were recorded for blue note records, including his five albums as a leader—the two-volume at the ‘golden circle’ stockholm (1965), the empty foxhole (1966), new york is now! (1968), and love call (1968)—as well as his lone sideman appearance on new and old gospel (1967) by fellow saxophonist jackie mclean. the boxset includes a booklet featuring rare photos and an enlightening essay by critic thomas conrad. the tone poet audiophile vinyl reissue series is produced by joe harley and features all-analog, mastered-from-the-original-master-tape 180g audiophile vinyl reissues packaged in deluxe stoughton printing “old style” gatefold tip-on jackets. mastering is by kevin gray (cohearent audio), and vinyl is manufactured at record technology incorporated (rti).

                Round

Days - Inc. John Talabot / Ex-Terrestrial / Fit Siegel Remixes

'Days' is like no other track Round has produced to date. For a start, it's the first song he has ever written without using samples. It's also the first time he's worked with a vocalist. Truth is that everything surrounding the track's conception is somehow exceptional. The melody came to Torsten as a sudden spark, which he discretely hummed into his phone while walking in Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen. "I always feel an urge to make music when I feel emotional, and like many other people I remember the emotional periods in my life", he recalls when questioned about what inspired him of that particular time and space. He then asked danish singer Astrid Engeberg to record vocals and after some work with the laptop the song was born. So simple, so special. The three remixes manage to be faithful to the original's haunting oddness while offering radically different takes on it. First off John Talabot pushes it into slow and sludgey mollusc break territories with a shamanic translation, then Ex-Terrestrial offers a sedated IDM interpretation for fans of BOC etc, finally the Fit Siegel gets his music box on with a deranged bit of technofunk.

                  The Wildhearts

                  Thirty Year Itch

“Ginger gave me two instructions: “Loud guitars and loud crowd”….I didn’t have a choice in either as that’s what was captured during the recording” - Live album producer Dave Draper. At a time when we are craving live shows more than ever, Round Records presents “ The Wildhearts - 30 Year Itch”, recorded live during the band’s The Renaissance Men and Diagnosis tours during 2019. The 17-track album showcases the incendiary energy that has made The Wildhearts one of the best loved UK live rock acts of the last thirty years. A perfect moment in time, thirty years from the band forming, that shows a band still at the height of their powers, bristling with energy as they deliver classic tracks such as “Caffeine Bomb”, “Suckerpunch”, “Let Em Go”, “Vanilla Radio” and “I Wanna Go Where The People Go”. Ginger says, “There are a few authorised bootleg live albums of The Wildhearts doing the rounds, but as soon as Danny rejoined the band I knew I had to capture the classic Wildhearts line up on record.

There were a few reasons for this, the main one being that we're still alive, which is a situation that could change at any second with this group. I also wanted people to hear how insanely powerful The Wildhearts are as a live band. Pounding drums, chainsaw bass and bombastic guitar riffs, all underpinning harmony vocals and huge anthemic songs that every member of the audience sings like a football crowd. It's a surprisingly emotional blend of noise, passion and unity. As far as I'm concerned this is a classic album by a unique band playing timeless songs that don't fit into any established genre. Is it rock? Is it punk? Who cares, it's The Wildhearts.” Although the release date of the album was set pre Covid, the albums Imminent release will give the fans a little taste of what they can’t have with the current situation. Mastered once again by maestro Dave Draper, this double album captures the band’s balls out performance that still kicks the ass of crowds up and down the country, 30 years since they started! Dave explains “‘Never Outdrunk, Never Outsung‘ was my first adventure into the world of working with The Wildhearts. I carried a lot of pressure on my shoulders to make sure it was as close to the experience of actually being in the crowd. Judging on what the feedback has been since it came out, I can say I think it worked out just fine.

So when the time came around to make another live album for the boys, myself and Elliot Vaughan once again jumped in the car and captured a few shows from The Renaissance Men and Diagnosis tours of 2019. When it came to the mixing, like on ‘Never Outdrunk…’, it was really good to hear older tracks having a new lease of life and power from the boys…. the two songs from ‘Endless Nameless’ that have made this new album are highlights for me and I’m sure many of you will agree. Timeless songs with all you mad bastards singing your hearts out on. What’s not to like? Ginger gave me two instructions: “Loud guitars and loud crowd”….I didn’t have a choice in either as that’s what was captured during the recording, Thank you for making my job a lot easier, guys!” The album will also be released featuring an exclusive yellow vinyl version and also a CD version with 4 exclusive postcards, that will only ever be available with this version. The Wildhearts are one of the UK’s best loved rock acts. Fronted by the mercurial Ginger, the band have written countless anthems that are woven into the fabric of UK rock music. The band have nine studio albums, from the iconic debut “Earth Vs The Wildhearts” through to 2019’s critically acclaimed “Renaissance Man”, their first new studio in ten years. The band are an established live act who consistently sell out venues across The UK and Europe. For all those fans of live music craving something to fill the gap until life returns to normal then this is the album you must have.

                    Holly Golightly

                    Singles Round-Up

Holly Golightly (real name) started her musical career as a founder member of all girl garage band Thee Headcoatees, a Billy Childish /
Thee Headcoats splinter group in 1991. She spent four years as a Headcoatee before breaking away to release her debut record, The Good Things, in 1995. Where the Headcoatees sound was a blend of girl group sounds and three-chord garage-rock with all the original songs coming from the pen of Billy Childish, Holly's solo sound is more a blend of pre-rock electric blues, folk rock, and less frantic rock 'n' roll. Apart from the wide range of covers of such artists as Willie Dixon, Ike Turner, Lee Hazelwood, Wreckless Eric, and Bill Withers, Golightly also writes most of her own material.

Holly Golightly is definitely the most interesting and diverse artist to come out of the Billy Childish school and is certainly one of the better singer/songwriters of the post-grunge era who gets better with every album. Since her debut in 1995, Golightly has been very prolific, releasing a string of classic long play records and loads of singles for a wide variety of labels as well as touring extensively in America, Australia & Europe. This double vinyl LP, (or single CD newly packaged in a digipack) compiles Holly's first twelve 7” singles, A & B-sides. It includes the bluesy 'No Big Thing' with its bar-room piano and harmonica backing, the dirty guitar-driven 'Til I Get, the shuffling brushed drums and double bass of 'Come The Day, the haunting vocal and bottleneck guitar of 'Stain' and finishes with a brilliant up-tempo cover of Pavement's 'Box Elder'.

The Hyenas travelled to Smart Studios in Wisconsin to record Merry Go Round, marking the start of a creative partnership with producer/engineer Butch Vig that would result in three of the most groundbreaking, game changing and scariest records to ever come out of Detroit...or anywhere.

Collaborating with a host of talent from both her native England and resident US, “Tigermixes” is an exaggerated, re-imagination of Round’s skillfully crafted works, quite unlike any of her releases to date.

Boasting the remix and production efforts of an eclectic cut of standout acts including: Puscifer (Maynard James Keenan and Mat Mitchell), Curt Smith (Tears For Fears), Phil Mossman (LCD Soundsystem) and personally selected underground and breakthrough talents, including members of Carina's musical family who worked closely on the making and touring of Tigermending, features re-workings of all eleven tracks from the original album, together with the physical release debut of the fan favourite bonus track “Got to Go” [2000 Years BC Remix] Feat. Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins).

Arc in Round's self-titled debut LP reflects a sensibility garnered from endless hours of studio tracking and hypnotic experimentation. The album is a re-invention of influence, ranging from melodic gems (think Stereolab meets Broadcast) to epic prog jams, tied securely yet ever so loosely together by haunting male and female vocals. The LP brims with layered dissonance and experimentation à la Disco Inferno & This Heat being driven by the Motorik Kraut rhythms of Neu and Can.

This is carefully crafted dark pop – taut yet spacey, noisy yet melodic; it's a smart experiment in sonic evolution. There is a sweet contradiction in the intricate metamorphosis of sound and song; each track feeding from one another until the sum of its parts breaks free. Formed in 2009 from the ashes of seminal shoegaze project Relay, the four-piece is comprised of Philadelphia stalwarts; producer/engineer Jeff Zeigler, co-songwriter Mikele Edwards, bassist Josh Meakim and drummer Matt Ricchini. The album was tracked and mixed at Zeigler's own studio (Uniform Recording) and features guest appearances by members of Kurt Vile and the Violators and Pattern is Movement. Arc In Round has also enlisted the talents of A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Our Brother the Native, Ape School and Benoit Pioulard in remixing select tracks.

It's finally here, all on one handy format for accessing the hottest cuts from the first Round of the HoZac singles club, along with two previously unreleased bonus tracks by Teepee and Idle Times. This compilation spans the first ten elusive subscription-only 7" records released from 2009-2010, featuring rare tracks by Dum Dum Girls, Woven Bones, Box Elders, Flight, White Mystery, Teepee, Idle Times, Mother Of Tears, Art Thieves, and Teeth (the elusive Blank Dogs/Spider side project), and is not to be missed.

Not only does this release mark the 50th record in the Hozac repertoire, but its got the goods to back it up with a massive array of underground gems normally fetching hefty ebay prices as the only other means of access. Although not every track from the 7" series is included due to space limitations, they've culled the most sparkling cuts and remastered the tracks to perfection, and housed it in one convenient package. Oh, and those bonus tracks? You can bet you're gonna want 'em based on the brilliance of Teepee and Idle Times' exquisite track records.
