Reaching The Highest Pleasure / I Am Your Mind Part 2 (Pépé Bradock Remix)

'There are moments when we harmonise with each other and become one with nature and reality.' When, in the early 2000's, Pete Adarkwah heard of the existence of tapes of unreleased Roy Ayers and Ubiquity recordings sitting in storage he contacted Roy to get hold of them to be mastered and released. Released they were under the banner of 'Virgin Ubiquity' which spawned two volumes of the original grooves as well as a compilation of remixed versions of selected tracks. Now coming out on a 10” single, 'Reaching For The Highest Pleasure' gets it's first ever vinyl release, thus adding to the canon of 'must have' Roy Ayers records. This vibraphone heavy track and funk-fuelled bassline epitomises Roy's Black Consciousness inspired output from the mid-70's that also saw seminal albums such as Red Black and Green, Mystic Voyage and Everybody Loves The Sunshine recorded with various line ups of 'Ubiquity'. This release is backed with the call to arms of personal freedom and self that is 'I Am Your Mind part 2' remixed by Parisian producer Pépé Bradock AKA Julien Auger. First released by BBE on the original 'Virgin Ubiquity' compilation as the original recording and subsequently as a remixed version on 'Virgin Ubiquity remixed', this track features a stunning female vocal as well as Roy's spoken word philosophies laid over a deep and infectious groove. These two tracks are Roy Ayers at his legendary best from his most innovative period of creativity with his Ubiquity band of top flight Jazz, Funk and Soul musicians and artists. As already said, this a must have record.

    J Dilla

B.B.E. - Big Booty Express (Remixes By Pépé Bradock & Âme)

Taken from Dilla's 2001 BBE debut solo album "Welcome 2 Detroit", "Big Booty Express" gets the remix treatment from German duo Âme and Parisian Pépé Bradock.

Contributing two mixes to the EP, Parisian producer Pépé Bradock AKA Julien Auger needs little introduction to house music fans but hip-hop heads need not doubt his musical credentials. A natural guitarist and turntablist, he's provided solos, riffage, scratches, juggles and chops to numerous rappers and bands before turning his hand to the discipline of house music. Two remixes done in his inimitable style grace the twelve. Slightly skewhiff but deliciously musical, there's no-one quite does it like Pépé!

Also providing a remix of "Big Booty Express" is the German production duo of Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer who work together under the name of Âme. After first meeting in Kristian's record shop in their home town of Karlsruhe and bonding over a shared love of Chicago house and Detroit techno the pair started working together and producing records for Sonar Kollektiv in 2003. Perfectly demonstrating their harmonic discord and big room sound, their remix here is a masterclass of wobbly, peaktime tech-house.

Matt says: House remixes of hip-hop legend J Dilla are bound to be divisive. But I'm surprised how well Ame and Bradock have rose to the occasion here - delivering high quality electronic dancefloor hedonism.

    Pepe Bradock

    Exodus 8

French deep house hero and former karate kid Pepe Bradock gets back to the regular Atavisme catalogue numbers with a new EP of smokescreen deep house rollers. On the A-side, "Is This Really A Party?" is Bradock at his mercurial best, a perfect filtration of thick bottom end, nimble hats and twisted sound design which is at once strange and soulful. Smudged guitar samples and jazz vocals lend a rish musicality to the track while the film noir chords and buzzing signal interference keep it nicely nocturnal. Over on the flip "Grandgousier" gives us vintage Pepe deepness, all swelling strings, playful vocal samples and outrageous club bass set to an irresistible rhythm. A populist lead line holds down the midrange here, keeping the club kids happy while the Frenchman works his idiosyncratic magic all around. Pepe even chucks in an odd diversion into downbeat, acid and techno at the end, which is perfect for keeping the lazy jocks on their toes.

Patrick says: No messing here from the French house blackbelt, who hits us with two straight up house heaters, albeit in his own inimitable style.
