OUTER SPACE

After capturing the attention of audiences, DJs worldwide and the media with the brilliant "Flight Of Sagittarius", Brazilian Diogo Strausz, signed to Parisian label Goutte d'Or Records, presents: "Samba From Outer Space"

This second opus takes us on a journey through time and style, from jazz-funk to dance music and Afrobeat, invoking masters such as Caetano Veloso, Giorgio Moroder or Tony Allen.

'This idea of "Samba From Outer Space" comes from dance music being a universal language beyond electronic but mainly a form of gathering people together in the same frequency.' says Diogo. 'We could summarize everything in electronic dance music is nothing but samba from outer space.'

    Lord Tusk

Tell Me Feat Tyson / Healer

First 7" format from Australian taste makers Outer Space Inner Time - who've previously touched on digi-dub, deep house and shamanic movements.

It's the London-schooled Apron alumni Lord Tusk enlisted in for the sixth release, who gives Dean Blunt / Hype Williams a run for their money with a tasty double header of NGS (non-genre-specific) electronic music.

Sound alien? It shoud(n't). This strange new form / hybrid style has been around for a while. A bastard child / pre-cursor to the vapourwave movement think James Ferrara, Sun Araw, Macintosh+ and in particularly Dead Blunt and his (and Inga Copeland's) Hype Williams project. Lord Tusk, to me takes the baton from this fellow Londoner and runs with it - imparting a sophisticated level of art and obscurity into everything he does. The anti-star of underground electronic music if you will.

"Tell Me" refracts 80's hair-metal through VHS prisms and bedroom boogie outboard equipment. If you liked the Private Lesson record on Total Stasis or the better side of 100% Silk then get on this pronto!

"Healer" tames the wild effects and loads up the 80s reverb presets, strumming a bright guitar alongside gated tom crashes. Add Lord Tusk's completely idiosyncratic, out-of-tune vocal style and it quickly becomes an odd ball, no-wave hit for the under achievers!

Probably the most unusual, yet still pleasing to the ear, records you'll hear all week! Most recommended.

Dancing In Outer Space / Outer Space (Reissue)

Originally released in 1979, ‘Dancing In Outer Space’ is a certified jazz-funk classic from a legendary band! It sits at the pinnacle of the underground UK dance scene that went on to have a global influence. Stateside, the track had big support in clubs such as the mythic ‘Paradise Garage’ and ‘The Loft’ by the likes of Larry Levan and David Mancuso. The A-side swells into being, building from the flanged hi-hats into a full on cosmic freakout complete with wild bass, cool brass and jazzy guitar licks. So far, so far out, but when the bat pitch organ riff comes in, you're transported to a place you never knew existed. Meanwhile on the flip, "Outer Space" twists those same ingredients into a more laid back and loungey variation. It's an instantly recognisable anthem that is just as fresh today as it was when it was first released.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Jazz-funk / disco hybrid which became a staple on the sacred floors of the Paradise Garage and the Loft. Deep, groovy and galactic tackle folks.

The Membranes current album remixed by Clint Mansell, Manic Street Preachers, Godlflesh, Mark Lanegan, Keith Levene, Youth, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Neubauten and more..

In 2015 the Membranes released their first album for 26 years - the critically acclaimed Dark Matter/Dark Energy double album.

The album received great reviews all over the world and lots of radio play on 6music.

An ambitious album it was sparked by a meeting between John Robb and the head of the CERN project which inspired the songs about the universe, life and death with the death of Robb’s father feeding into the songs.

Many fellow musicians and authors also called it their album of the year from author Ian Rankin to Mark Lanegan to the Manic Stret preachers so the Membranes decided on another ambitious project - to remix the whole of the album with special guests…the result is Inner Space/Out Space - a reenvisioning of a whole album.
