The Mr K Edits

Trans Europe Express

The crucial Mr K is back with a special repress for Record Store Day 2024. This one throws it back to his two superb edits of Kratwerk's 'Trans Euro Express' which is cited often as the start of techno. Side A offers stripped-down, bare drum bones, with naked drums shaped into futuristic fusion, while Part II adds synthetic context. Deconstructing Kraftwerk's original sci-fi masterpiece at a slow, smouldering pace, it presents a classic in an entirely new light. This release unlocks doors of serious DJ creativity and should be snapped up quickly before it's gone again.

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: You don't need me to tell you how good "Trans Europe Express" is. However, this cheeky little percussion edit from the masterful Danny Krivit extends the dancefloor ecstasy of that metallic drum break into THE GREATEST DJ TOOL ever. Buy two copies and lock into the robot rhythm.

Luke Una

Mr Bongo Edits - Volume 2

A cosmic coming together that sees two of Luke's secret weapons, re-edited and re-contextualised by the man himself to provide optimal dancefloor euphoria. A stalwart of the underground for nearly 40 years, Luke has become an appointed leader of the late night disenfranchised, with an unquestionable ability to pick records that make minds tick. Not least through his two E Soul Cultura compilations released on Mr Bongo over the past two years.

A taste that traverses genres as much as it does emotions and decades, who better to give an insight into the tracks he has chosen to edit, than the man himself. "I've been an avid collector of afro-beat house, techno and underground black heart disco since before the basement soul days of Electric Chair 30 years ago. Both these bombs were very much holy grail finds, plucked from the last four decades of digging in random crates of dusty vinyl all over the world."

First up, Thandi Zulu & The Young Five's interpretation of Pure Energy's early '80s disco power play - 'Love Game'. With a distinctive South African synth bass and killer keys combo, Luke explains the original has this "bonkers alchemy of heavy machine soul, uptempo rawness and a majestic disco evangelism", making it ripe for a re-edit.

On the B side, Lionel Pillay's Jazz dancer 'Plum'. "The original was a relentless 18- minute raw jam", Luke states, "which despite its late '70s South African origin kinda reminded me of a 1986 Chicago piano House record".

"These edits strip the tracks back and rebuild them, giving them more sonic weight with that looped up drum jacking militancy from the days of Chicago, combined with a boosted sense of transcendental, psychedelic, cosmic disco. They have always had such an explosive reaction on so many dancefloors including the heavier electronic club, so it felt only right to reshare them".

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Two sneaky cuts from Lord Luke's studio cache. There's no stopping him at the moment!

The Mr K Edits

Wela Wela / Komi Ke Kenam

The wonderful Mr K is back with more edit magic on his own Most Excellent label, this time adding his own spin to 'Wela Wela', a hard edge and raw funk cut from Black Blood, a band of musicians from central Africa but who were based in Belgium. This one was never a hit back in the day for some reason but is built on a killer groove that Mr K reworks and tweaks for more suitable dance floor deployment. It was formerly on his Grass Roots record but now makes its way to a handy 7". On the flip is 'Komi Ke Kenam (Fish & Funjee)' which has tough breaks and funk bass that will ensure 'floors get down and dirty.

Funky Music / Giving Up

Legendary DJ and edit king Mr K is back on Most Excellent Unlimited with the latest in their essential collaborative series. As always this is a slab of wax that offers up two gorgeous cuts that have been skilfully cut down to a maximum 7" 45rpm format. The first is Luther Vandross's 'Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)' which David Bowie later reworked to become one of his many hit singles 'Fascination.' In its original form, it has rickety soul grooves and lavish stings next to the soaring vocals. The tune second is Zulema's 'Giving Up' which has a dramatic intro, Mr K remasters it and allows the rolling piano, great string ensemble and guitar sounds to really cut through clearly. Two bonafide dancefloor delights.

Like A Prayer

The one and only Mr K sure does know how to cook up a masterful edit. Here he heads into gospel territory with the latest 7" in Most Excellent Unlimited's collaborations with him. Both of these tunes are appearing on 7" vinyl for the first time here and have long been staples of the sets of Danny Krivit. His 'Churchapella' edit of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' is as holy and steamy as it gets with the whole thing sure to uplift and energise any crowd. On the backside is a superb edit of the Clark Sisters slinky rare groove gem 'Ha-Ya (Eternal Life).' It's a slightly slower tune but one that makes just as much of an impact.

Wild Style

Down By Law / Subway Beat (Kenny Dope Edits)

As pieces of musical curation go, Kenny Dope's reimagining and reediting of the Wild Style breakbeats is outstanding.

While the music from the 'Wild Style' OST is truly seminal, the story behind it is even more fascinating.Underneath the voices of important rappers from hip-hop's first wave – Cold Crush Brothers, Double Trouble, Rammellzee, Busy Bee and more – were a selection of backing beats that have underpinned and influenced a whole lot of hip- hop ever since. It would be easy to mistake them for genuine breakbeats dug out of crates, but they're not. Overseen by hip- hop impresario Freddie Braithwaite – better known as Fab 5 Freddy – in collaboration with Blondie's Chris Stein – the songs from the Wild Style soundtrack are all unique creations intended as a homage to the early breakbeats.Drummer Lenny Ferrari – who had played for Aretha Franklin before emerging on the punk scene – and bassist David Harper played many of the iconic grooves, two somewhat forgotten participants in shaping a legendary sound. They – and Chris Stein – weren't even in the same studio at the same time.Kenny Dope, a long-time fan of the music, later acquired the original reel- to- reel tapes from Charlie Ahearn, the film's director. Using the Wild Style breakbeats – many just a minute or so long – he transformed them into longer edits that give them more room to breathe. 'Down by Law' and 'Subway Beat' are two of the most famous, breakdance classics that summon up visions of graffiti'd trains speeding through the South Bronx.

From the legendary hip hop movie 'Wild Style'.

Kenny Dope edits using the original reel-to-reel tapes from Charlie Ahern, the film's director.
