They Move In The Night

Discovered after spending 58 years on a dusty shelf in the Louis Wayne Moody Pictures vault, this previously unissued soundtrack contains a backpack’s worth of grieving guitars, somber surf, and haunting hiss, zipped tight with the teeth of abandonment, dashed dreams, moral ambiguity, fate, tearful goodbyes, and lukewarm diner coffee. Because the long arm of society nips at their heels... THEY MOVE IN THE NIGHT.

Freestyle comes correct again with a killer slice of 1987 UK Street Soul from Purely Fizzycal, originally issued on the duo's own Pure Impact Productions label.

North Londoner Trish Langley met South Londoner Ash Kamat initially in the the mid 1980s on Tin Pan Alley, while Ash was working at Rod Argent's keyboard shop and running UK soul-focussed zine Soul Trade, and the quickly began working together. Handling the programming and production, Ash says his inspiration came from a mixture of London pirate radio sounds and the US-based sounds of Kashief, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis etc. While Trisha's vocals and melodies were influenced by growing up listening to her parents reggae records, plus her brother's taste for the likes of Brothers Johnson, Maze, Isley Brothers, and a little lovers rock such as Janet Kay - which, together with Ash's raw drum machine sounds, bears all the hallmarks for this uniquely UK take on soul.credits

    Move D & Pete Namlook

    Reissued 2

Berlin party series and label AWAY Music continues its limited vinyl series called "Reissued", dedicated to re-releasing iconic cuts from the vast collaborative catalog of Move D & Pete Namlook. The second installment "Reissued 2", which follows the series' inaugural EP from 2019, features again some exceptional pieces that were previously only available on CD.

Move D and Pete Namlook are electronic visionaries whose 26-album relationship explored and intertwined psychedelic synthscapes, deep house and techno, future jazz, and downtempo on Namlook's cult imprint Fax Records. Their innovative and influential works keep inspiring electronic music producers today, showcasing their willingness to collaborate and push the boundaries of electronic music.

"Silk Route Part 1", which comes from their 2008 album "Travelling The Silk Route", occupies the A-side with a 12-minute journey full of jazz-infused ambient soundscapes meeting oriental melodies with sophisticated percussion patterns. A truly immersive listening experience!

On the flip, "Sleeplearnin'" was described as psycho-active electronica when it first came out on the "Sons of Kraut" album 17 years ago. Translated, we're talking about minimal house that carries their warm trademark sound, enriched by pulsating echoes, space noises, and relapsing vocoder shreds. It conveys the pair's unique energy that embraces the improvisational moment to create a hypnotic flow that's nothing but timeless.

"Reissued 2" is a true testament to the innovative spirit and pioneering work of Move D and Pete Namlook. With these tracks now available on vinyl for the first time, AWAY's limited series is a must-have for old and new fans alike.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Unmissable and quintessential Move D sounds here, both tracks absolutely breathtaking in their sound design and production prowess. Hard to believe they're at least 15 & 17 years old! Previously only available on CD, this is a real vinyl treat!

As the name suggests, Sai Galaxy represents a star-studded cluster of artists from around the world - their varied styles colliding to form a refreshing fusion of classic Afrobeat, disco and West African funk

Drawing from the influence of 70s and 80s Nigerian artists such as Nkono Teles, Jake Sollo and Mike Umoh, the Sai Galaxy collective is on a mission to reproduce the analogue warmth and groove from those decades. Consequently, they lean heavily on 70s production techniques - free from the predictable rigidity of digital sequencing.

Spearheaded by Australian multi-instrumentalist Simon Durrington (from Digital Afrika), the members include Olugbade Okunade - former trumpet player from Seun Kuti's Egypt 80 - as well as guests Gabriel Otu, Ray Lédon and Vanessa Baker.

While the EP seeks to reflect 70s production, glimpses of contemporary elements can be found in the arrangements and harmonies, at times reminiscent of modern artists such as Lord Echo, Bosq and Voilaaa.

As Durrington believes: 'dance is vital to health and community'. And with an EP that urges you to dance from start to finish, consider Sai Galaxy a cosmic tonic for the modern lifestyle. There's also some serious bass weight on the vinyl, meaning the record's gonna more than cut it in the dance.

For fans of: Kiki Gyan, the "Doing It In Lagos" compilation, Flamingo Pier, Khruangbin, the Space Grapes label, David Mancuso. And yes, it really is that good!

      Bernard Butler

People Move On - Deluxe 4CD Media Book Edition

In 1994 Bernard Butler left Suede at the end of the lengthy recording sessions for the band’s second album, the acknowledged classic that is “Dog Man Star”, which he cowrote. His first project was to join forces with singer David McAlmont record the album “The Sound Of McAlmont & Butler”, which was released in November 1995. It featured the Top 10 single “Yes” and the follow-up “You Do”.

In 1997, Alan McGee signed Bernard up to Creation Records, and he set about recording his first solo album, playing all the instruments himself, except for the drums and strings. Released in April 1998, the album was a critical and commercial success, reaching # 11 in the UK album charts and features the hit singles “Stay”, “Not Alone” and “Change Of Heart”.

When approached about contributing to this reissue in 2021, Bernard decided that he wanted to re-record all the vocals, for both the album and the B-sides. He has also added the occasional guitar overdub. The new vocals can be found on CD2 and 3. CD4 features some gems from Bernard’s own archives: demos, a rehearsal, solo live tracks, and a selection of fascinating outtakes from the string sessions.

The 28 page book is extensively annotated by Bernard himself, and also contains all the lyrics plus photos from Bernard’s own collection plus unpublished recording session photos from photographer Jill Furmanovsky.

"Source - We Move" finds Garcia reinventing her Mercury Prize-nominated album, "Source", through new collaborations with several artists and producers including; Dengue Dengue Dengue, Georgia Anne Muldrow, DJ Harrison and Moses Boyd. The reworked tracks retain the inspiring musicianship and blend of jazz and other influences found on the original, whilst also moving in a more beat-driven, electronic direction.

Perfect for DJs exploring more slower and sensuous moods, these lavish and highly musical grooves remind me of nights spent at Mr. Scruff and Eyes Down; with a spaciousness that allows turntablists and MCs to perform at will. The electrical innovation works incredibly well with Garcia's source material which should appeal to hip-hop heads, beat diggers, jazz nerds and soul boys alike. Mega stuff this, check it!

Highlife On The Move - Selected Nigerian & Ghanaian Recordings From London & Lagos 1954-66

In conjunction with compiler and highlife researcher Dr. Markus Coester, Soundway Records present a very special release. Double CD and triple 180g gatefold vinyl (with a bonus 7 inch). This 45 includes the two first ever recordings by a certain Fela Ransome Kuti with his band The Highlife Rakers. Recorded by Melodisc in London in 1960 both tracks have been unearthed after more than fifty years in hiding.

In many ways this compilation is a prequel of sorts to Soundway's groundbreaking Nigeria and Ghana Special compilations, telling the early story of modern highlife's foundation and formulation. It traces the music from West Africa to London, adding elements of jazz, mambo and calypso along the way and paving the way for the afro sounds of the 1970s.

Accompanied by a 44 page CD booklet and 12 page vinyl booklet, the notes by Dr. Coester include rare photographs, labels and advert reproductions alongside some stunning and very rare recordings.

          Howard Eliott Payne

          Bright Light Ballads

Debut solo from former frontman of The Stands. A unique melting pot of Liverpool melody, hip city swagger and the wide-sigh soulfulness of the wild open country. Rootsy and unearthly in equal measure, a stunning debut of country-flavoured songs with a Wilco vibe, from a truly unique British songwriting talent.

            Tarentel

            We Move Through Weather

The stories that make up Tarentel's existence are almost as dramatic and hard to follow as their musical trajectory. The San Francisco group started in the mid-90s as an outlet for guitarists Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Danny Grody to make left-of-centre instrumental guitar suites. Their sound and vision proved very infectious, drawing in more collaborators and full-fledged members than anyone has time to count. Over the course of nearly a decade, the band has become a bit of a legend in independent music. The songs themselves, average over 10 minutes each – with some stretching past the half-hour. Perhaps then, it comes as a bit of a surprise that their first album in nearly four years bears more songs in less time than ever before. Though hardly a pop record, "We Move Through Weather" is Tarentel's most focused album. Now stripped to a trio (Sonna's Jim Redd completes the line-up on drums), the sound is almost entirely intuitive. Virtually every song is built from expansive improvisations of sweeping drones and walls of discordant feedback. Where taught, meticulous guitar melodies once drove their songs to conclusion, thunderous drumming now navigates the group through an uncertain abyss of layered noise, horn bursts (courtesy of musician Steve Dye's arsenal of homemade instruments) and the occasional lonely piano.

              Fairweather

              If They Move. Kill Them

Fairweather : very young, very intense, brooding, energetic and melodic. They've toured loads and are signed to the same label as Saves the Day another excellent young indie/emocore band. Their music is about passion, intensity and movement through life and they're pretty impressive.
