Classics Vol. 1

With ‘Classics Vol. 1’, Modeselektor are releasing a special album that functions like a musical résumé. Szary and Gernot originally intended to re-record old tracks from their first two albums, ‘Hello Mom!’ and ‘Happy Birthday!’, but what began as a reconstruction transformed almost entirely into something new: a fresh collection of pieces that captures the spirit of their early releases without simply copying them.

The duo looks back while simultaneously creating the future. Tracks like ‘Kill Bill Vol. 4’, ‘Edgar’ and other album titles serve as source material and are repeatedly disassembled and reassembled, reinterpreted and ultimately used, in most cases, only as abstract inspiration. The result is a retrospective that has emancipated itself. A bold experiment, a failed attempt in the very best sense.

‘Classics Vol. 1’ thus forges an unexpected bridge between then and now, encapsulating everything that defines Modeselektor: curiosity, chaos, humour and an unwavering need to constantly uncover new facets of their own history. And what could be more fitting for reflection, renewed creative momentum and energy than a tour? Modeselektor will embark on an extensive worldwide tour in 2026, including several festivals.

DJ-Kicks: Modeselektor

Modeselektor – aka Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary – are one of the most original acts to emerge from Berlin's techno underground. After more than three decades of astonishing work – spanning cult labels, critically acclaimed albums and EPs, and era-defining releases as part of Moderat – they remain at the top of their game, as hungry as ever for the freshest electronic music from around the world. In 2025, the same year DJ-Kicks and !K7 Records celebrate their 30th and 40th anniversaries respectively, the duo are finally set to deliver their edition for the vaunted mix series. Modeselektor's passion and drive are writ large across DJKicks.

Contributing to the long-running series has always been on their bucket list. Then, finally, this year, the stars aligned, and they set to work on their edition of the compilation. Taking the non-linear approach has always been the Modeselektor way. No two tracks on DJ-Kicks sound alike, meaning the magic often happens in the liminal spaces between tunes. The rhythmically compelling release came together over a matter of days.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Berlin megaproducers Modeselektor bring us a cosmic mix of genres, seamlessly brought together into a whole that's more than the sum of it's parts. A bold, stylistically broad audio adventure available again once more.

Body Language Vol 8 - Modeselektor

Somehow or other Modeselektor still find time to be among the best, most reliably party smashing DJs on the planet. Their contribution to Get Physical's "Body Language" mix series is a riotous, bass-heavy affair, one that takes in all kinds of interesting developments in cutting edge contemporary dance music. MDSLKTR draw a natural line from the fizzing aqua-crunk of Rustie's "Zig-Zag" to the R&B bump of Missy Elliott's Timbaland-produced "Lick Shots", from the skippy 90s techno of G-Man's "Quo Vadis" to the tough Berghain minimalism of Norman Nodge. Dubstep – a big influence on the Moderat project – plays a pivotal role in the mix: moody, synth-led masterpieces by Peverelist and Benga recall classic Detroit techno, while Untold's devastating "Anaconda" is sheer dancefloor energy. Scuba's "Klinik" isn't so much dubstep as broken, reductionist house music. The uncompromising, big-hearted "Body Language Vol.8" is one of the most refreshing and outrageously banging mixes you'll hear all year, a stellar addition to a series that has seen previous contributions from the likes of MANDY, DJ T, Matthew Dear and Junior Boys.
