Soul Jazz Records Presents: Studio One Disco Mix - 2024 Repress

Studio One's music in the 1970s took the label to new heights. The new style of Disco Mix brought many areas of Reggae together Roots, Lovers, Disco and Dub all came together in extended form, re-versioning classic hits, experimenting with new studio technology, over-dubbing, syn-drums and more producing what many fans describe as the most creative and innovative phase in the history of the legendary Studio One Records.

This Studio One Disco Mix album includes many sought after classic tunes only ever released in very small quantities (on Studio One's very first 12" records as well as it's infamous Music Lab 10"s out of New York) and consequently many of these track s have been unavailable since their day of release. Studio One Disco Mix features many of the classic Studio One artists such as Alton Ellis, Sugar Minott, Jackie Mittoo and Willie Williams (with his classic re-versioning of his own "Armigideon Time") alongside less well artists such as Doreen Schaeffer, Judah Eskender Tafari and George Dudley and many more.

        Earth

Earth 2.23 Special Lower Frequency Mix

Did you know there are horses on the cover of Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version? There are at least three in the right hand corner, gathered inexplicably near a white canvas tent, a human possibly perched among its folds. As widescreen and vast as the cover may seem, those little details—the horses, the possible human, the faint wisp of white clouds—give it depth and wonder, something to which the imagination can return.

Did you know that the music on Earth 2—repressed now for its 30th anniversary, back in its original artwork, and accompanied by a riveting set of remixes that demonstrate the reach of what Dylan Carlson long ago called “ambient metal”—works much the same way? The surface is massive and obvious, the meatpaw riffs of Carlson and bassist Dave Harwell pounding and swiping and pawing at the speakers, a true bludgeon in three-dimensional sound. Listen, though, for the details in the corners, for the finesse beneath the force, and Earth 2 reveals new levels of depth and wonder.

The widespread impact of Earth 2 suggests that others have indeed been leaning in, listening to these minutiae and making something new of them. A masterpiece without many genre precedents, Earth 2 surely helped send doom metal down its more modern drone, ambient, and avant-garde avenues. Those descendants are obvious. Perhaps more surprising and gratifying are the ways it has influenced electronic music, modern composition, and even hip-hop by realigning our senses of tempo, time, and texture. Earth 2 engendered a rearrangement of expectations, regardless of preferred form.

The new remix set, Earth 2.23: Special Lower Frequency Mix, makes this clearer than ever. The Bug has taken a bit of “Seven Angels” and laced it with feedback and big bass, allowing grime luminary Flowdan to climb atop it with his dark, staccato visions. Responsible for many transformational records himself, Justin K. Broadrick of Jesu and Godflesh crawls inside “Teeth” to lash at it with punishing drum machines and sordid layers of new distortion, building it into some brokedown palace of industrial mayhem. Loop’s Robert Hampson makes good on the premise of ambient metal with his 30-minute hypnotic beauty, while longtime Earth cohort and longtime Built to Spill multi-instrumentalist Brett Netson seems to float the sound through a benighted graveyard on his clever “Teeth” revamp.

          TRACK LISTING

              Rare Silk

Storm - Incl. Arp Duppy Chip Mix

Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. The original on the A side is a treat enough, but then throw in a mercurial dubbed out version by Arp on the flip and you've got yourself a 10 inch portal to a most delightful dimension.

                  The Circle Of Confusion

Soul Of A Lion / Soul Of A Lion (Dub Mix) [feat. Wayne Paul]

Building on the success of their first releases featuring Cornel Campbell, the Swiss producer duo "The Circle of Confusion" is set to drop a new single on Rocafort Records, featuring none other than English old-school reggae singer Wayne Paul.

Active in the 90's and 2000's within the London label Big Dada, the artist of Jamaican origin sank into alcohol and drugs, before rising from his ashes fifteen years later. Now he's back with a powerful message of hope on this track called " Soul Of A Lion ". Wayne's soulful voice blends perfectly with the modern reggae feel created by The Circle Of Confusion.

An 80s roots-oriented sound mixed with a crusty digital edge backed with a dope dub track makes the perfect 45 for reggae heads.

Slava Vakarchuk & Robert 3D Del Naja

                    Obiymy (Legacy Of War Mix)

A collaboration between Massive Attack’s Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja and Ukrainian artist Slava Vakarchuk, the frontman of Ukraine’s most popular rock band Okean Elzy. Vakarchuck has performed 179 impromptu shows for civilians and soldiers across Ukraine since the invasion began 12 months ago. The track, “Obiymy (Legacy of War Mix)”, was re-worked by Del Naja and Euan Dickinson in March last year and is now released through his Battle Box label. In April we’ll see a vinyl release featuring a B-side “Field Recordings / 2022” in a gatefold sleeve press by Deepgrooves, the world’s most eco-friendly vinyl plant.

All profits go to the Legacy of War Foundation; an international charity providing support to civilians affected by conflict, founded by Giles Duley - a photographer, writer, campaigner and UN Global Advocate. Duley shot all photography for the digital and vinyl release, which was then designed by Robert Del Naja. Legacy of War Foundation will be partnering with UNITED24, a global fundraising platform, (launched by president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in May 2022) to help restore destroyed homes in Kyiv Oblast, under the Rebuild Ukraine program.

                    About Legacy of War Foundation:
Legacy of War Foundation was set up to do things differently: operating localised, beneficiary-led projects to support civilians affected by conflict and raising awareness of the lasting impact of war without big offices, international teams or unnecessary overheads. Founded in 2017, the Foundation now runs projects around the world including its innovative land transfer and sustainable agriculture program Land for Women in Rwanda, refugee support in Lebanon, and an extensive Ukraine crisis response supporting marginalised groups with specialist evacuation support, shelters and humanitarian aid.

                    A note about proceeds:

Legacy of War Foundation will use the proceeds from the single to partner with UNITED24’s Rebuild Ukraine program, which aims to restore residential buildings in the Kyiv Oblast damaged during the Russian invasion. This program will enable 4237 Ukrainians to return to their homes in Irpin, Borodyanka, Hostomel, Buzove and Mila.

UNITED24 was launched by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the main venue for collecting charitable donations in support of Ukraine.

                    Dr. John

Gris Gris (Original MONO Mix) - 2023 Repress

1968 Debut Record, this is the Original MONO mix. The first time this has been reissued and its on Limited Green Vinyl. 1968 Debut album from the king of the psychedelic bayou – the hypnotic, mystical and powerful sound of the swamp coming to life. As he became Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack), it was his LA session work with musicians like Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, and Zappa that allowed him to start conjuring up his visions of guitar psych-pop to walk alongside his authentic New Orleans upbringing.

While “Gris Gris” contains moments that make it a type stamped symbol of its era, it might have well been made in outer space. Recorded in its own psychic and stylistic vacuum, the album borrows as heavily from the New Orleans’ musical culture in which he grew up as it does the looming continuous pulse of war, heavy drugs, and the end of the free love/hippie movement. The album was taken under the wing of a small percentage of the “underground” upon its release in 1968 and did not find a true following for years.

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Roel Funcken presents a suite of electronic drifts and rich meditative synth, industrial atmospherics and brittle, aquatic modular blips. It's a huge body of work that feels both consistent and transportive, with as many moments of crystalline beauty as there are intimidating walls of noise. A lovely, fascinating behemoth.

                        The Kills

No Wow - The Tchad Blake Mix 2022

On their seminal second album, No Wow, The Kills established the ethos that would set the tone for their expansive career - capture the rawest emotions and sounds, and then push them to the furthest possible edge.

The band is celebrating No Wow’s 15-year anniversary with a deluxe reissue featuring a fresh new mix by the multiple grammy award-winning Tchad Blake (The Black Keys, Fiona Apple, Arctic Monkeys) that brings new life to the 11 vivid tracks.

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A superb new mix of this seminal Kills LP from 2015 sees legendary deskman Tchad Blake give the raucous percussion and grinding overdrive room to breathe below Mosshart's legendary vocal fire. A wonderful album, and an essential purchase for those of you unaware of the power it holds. Superb.

                        Lovescene

Suits You / Overnight (Dancefloor Mix)

Finding each other amidst the more soulful side of the Manchester club scene, Lovescene can do it all. Able to both go big – as show-stopping early performances at Manchester International Festival and We Out Here Festival proved – and revel in the heady after-hours of the likes of Salford underground hub The White Hotel, new Band on the Wall-released 7” is a devastating encapsulation of the collective’s multiple personalities.

Suits You/Overnight (Dancefloor Mix) comes out hot on the announcement of the group’s debut album out in the Spring and is an irresistibly rich mix of velvet RnB, groove-laden soul and driving floor filler. The group deliver both in widescreen opulence, a direct link to their name which comes from band leader and vocalist Pop Roberts’ love of cinema.

“Good song writing should affect the viewer/listener in the same way a classic scene in a film should - the details in tone, wording and the emotion of the performance are everything” she says. “We’ll always strive to capture that in our music.”

Suits You adds to the canon of RnB torch ballads in its lament over unrequited love. It sees Roberts’ vocal soar high over gently rolling percussion, murmuring low-end and comparatively bolder guitars and keys that pull the track between hushed sadness to more heart-rending grief.

Flip side Overnight (Dancefloor Mix) sees Dub Phizix pop up with a guest engineer spot as the hook from the group’s original 2020 tune turns into a sultry, house-inflected party starter. “I played it at a few parties and the response was so good it just made sense to give it over to the dancefloors!” Roberts says. “We were even more pleased that Dub Phizix was up for mix engineering it - he's the king of beats and we respect his exceptional ears and advice.”

The split is the third release on the Band on the Wall 7” series, and a tantalisingly glimpse of one of Manchester’s most exciting new groups.

A purgative surrender to nature’s whim driven by a clattering machine drumbeat and rolled in a puddle of filthy dirty fuzz, ‘Natural Successor’ is the riotous new single from isle of Eigg based Scottish psychedelic electronic-pop ogre Johnny Lynch AKA Pictish Trail.

Set for release on limited-edition 12” vinyl by Fire Records, with support from Johnny’s own label Lost Map Records, it’s the first taste of a set of brand-new Pictish recordings produced by longterm collaborater Rob Jones (The Voluntary Butler Scheme, The Gene Dudley Group).

The 12” single features exclusive remixes by Django Django and Makeness

Matt says: Always nice to hear from the driving force that is Johnny Lynch. "Natural Successor" is soaring psychedlic rock with stadium potential. Django Django jump on board with a baggy, ALFOS-friendly tweak too. Then Makeness twist things up with a frenzied jungle refix.

Flesh Of My Skin - Remastered Original 1974 Mix

The original 1974 release of Keith Hudson's Flesh Of My Skin showcased the enduring strength and pivotal importance of the development of reggae music, Keith Hudson's complete mastery of the genre and the unqualified praise that followed its release was fully justified. This suburb re-master features the original mix available or the first time since the 1974 Mamba pressing and comes with the addition of the 45 only 'Darkest Night Version' and the restoration of the lost 'My Nocturne' omitted from the 1988 & 2004 remix versions. Also includes the previously unreleased 'Hunting Version' as a hidden track

Sassy Style - Original Mix & 45 Edit By Red Greg

Where's Pharoah Brunson when you need him? Hang on, I'll just drop this sophisticated funk bomb on the player and wait for the inevitable roar of "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGGGGGGGGGIIIIEEEE"! Dreamt up in 1982 by two best friends at a disco in Dallas and then released in 1984, Chazz’s "Sassy Style" has everything to please funk aficionados; stellar arrangement, catchy refrain and slick synth-topped groove. There's mad electronics, brilliant adlibs and an utterly optimistic attitude on show - presumably the cause of Discogs seller NEJDAO's speculative £1,200 listing! With Red Greg’s 45 edit on the B side, Reach Out reissuing this gem is more than a gift to record lovers! Pressed with love by Mother Tongue in Italy, it will be the best homage we can have to uphold their legacy in music.

Emotional Rescue presents the 2nd EP (of 4) highlighting the music of International Noise Orchestra. Centered around Ulrich Hornberg and Wolfgang Sperner, aka producers Gemini Brothers, this world "supergroup" released 5 LPs and 2 EPs in just 4 years.

Again showcasing their rhythm, calm and power, a metaphysical, real sensitivity and intellectualism, all wrapped around the groove. Starting with their own instrumental remix of Gimme Move Lovin', this little known 12" B side has long been a play for "heads" and allows the band's Pop Balearic, esoteric meets electronics to shine, layering Fairlight samples over a funky bass 4/4 around some '88 Amnesia pool dive.

Next the anthem, Yeh Naina Yaad Hai, as Asha Bhosle's beautiful vocals from the Manzil Manzil soundtrack, are mixed with drum machines to create a dream Bollywood meeting.

Again side two features 3 songs and starts like EP 1 with Glynnis Thomas (Savage Progress) vocals, now atop a sax laden Synth Pop brain, mind and body dance. Alias, Internationales Gerauschorchester offer wonderful jazz leanings for A Lulu A Bobe Danz, where the "bop" takes a leftfield embrace. To close then, Mr Richard Strange returns, invoking The Driving Force, returning to the idiosyncratic, percussive Earthbeat. Listen!

                            Kraftwerk

The Mix - Coloured Vinyl Reissue

Kraftwerk's first fully digital album confirmed their clubland credentials and reworked 11 of their best-loved tunes for a new generation. Painstakingly reconstructed and sequenced in the band's Kling Klang studio, new versions of tracks like "The Robots", "Trans Europe Express" and "Home Computer" now feature more funky rhythms and cleaned-up, liquid-crystal sounds. A stark warning about pollution at Sellafield is added to the glistening overhaul of "Radioactivity", sparking a war of words with British Nuclear Fuels. But most of all, "The Mix" is a career-spanning collection of legendary electro anthems and a classy acknowledgment of the two-way traffic between Kraftwerk and club culture.

The King & City reissue series continues with Paul Robinson's disco boogie jam Come On Sister. Moving from the Lovers sound of his early productions, his first solo recording was aimed straight at the blues, clubs and pirate stations of South London and beyond - a prolific artist on the rise.

Appearing as a 13 year old protegee drummer in The Simeons, recording for the legendary Freedom Sounds label out of Kingston; to forming the influential Roots / Lovers Rock outfit One Blood; then vocalist in the Nick Straker Band; and through to a 30 year career as "dubplate" producer / singer Barry Boom, Robinson is a man of talents and serious legacy.

This highly sought after debut, part of Neville King and Lee Laing's family of labels, followed releases in One Blood and productions for female Lovers groups Blood Sisters and Charisma. A pure disco boogie party cut, Come On Sister sees the Robinson family hit the Brit funk.

In label style, the flip is given the Discomix treatment, here by up and coming digger, dealer and producer, Bruno (Perfect Lives). Letting the horns, dub bass and drums build in anticipation before the keys and guitar join and it all drops to Robinson's vocals - Come On Sister.

                              CMON

                              Confusing Mix Of Nations

CMON is the new recording project of Josh da Costa and Jamen Whitelock. Even as they established themselves as integral members of New York’s DIY scene with their band Regal Degal, da Costa and Whitelock were acutely aware of how closed off they had become. As Regal Degal mounted its final tour, with clubs pushing their set times earlier and earlier to make space for the DJs who followed da Costa and Whitelock took notes. “We were definitely getting swept further from where we wanted to be and the excitement we wanted to portray,” Whitelock says. “There’s such joy in going out and dancing that was completely missing in a lot of shows, especially in New York. Nobody wants to move, everyone’s too self-conscious. But when you go to the club, everyone’s in it—you just want to dance, and that’s all that matters.”

The community potential and the promise of physical liberation that came with dance music spoke loudly to both da Costa and Whitelock, and following the dissolution of Regal Degal, da Costa set up a new life for himself in Los Angeles—a steady relationship, a pet bird, a car —and got down to work with a copy of Ableton. Back in New York, his head spun by DJ Rashad, Whitelock was learning to program, too. They kept their line of communication open, and eventually Whitelock started making the cross-country trek to work and record with his old bandmate. They mined the sound they established with Regal Degal, applying their old band’s heavy atmospherics and melancholy soul to four-on-the-floor rhythm grids and smoothed-out guitar lines, taking production cues from EBM and AOR in equal measure. If Confusing Mix of Nations is a tour of anything, though, it’s not countries so much as psychic spaces.

Each of its ten tracks feels like a postcard from an aesthetic territory worth returning to. Opener “Coo” begins with locked-in grooves reminiscent of Drugdealer (for whom da Costa drums) or Mild High Club, until it suddenly gives itself over to a rhythm that’s been chattering away in the back of the track. As da Costa and Whitelock follow its hints, “Coo” suddenly inverts its priorities and sounds like Miami bass all leaned out for Halloween, then calmly returns to the opening groove, the only proof of the excursion an excess of delay on da Costa’s vocal. “Peter Pan” struts like it’s on its way to meet side two of Sandinista! in its verses, then glows with New Romantic shine in the chorus. The pop hooks on “Good to Know” feel like they could set off a festival crowd, but they’re offset by a strange hollow ache at the song’s center—a weird sadness that makes you feel a little bad for dancing to it.

Willie Williams’ roots rock reggae classic "Armagideon Time" - the rare extended Disco Mix version - split into two sublime heavyweight slices and cut super-loud on a 12” single.

Produced by Studio One supremo Coxsone Dodd, this is a huge reggae anthem on the classic ‘Real Rock’ rhythm, famously covered by The Clash and sampled by KRS One, The Fugees and many more.

Rough Draft The Dilla Mix - RSD18 Edition

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2018 EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

The producer’s own mixes – recently rediscovered - of his seminal EP, expanded with bonus tracks into a 2LP set, with extensive liner notes and unpublished photos. When Ruff Draft saw its initial release in 2003, J Dilla possessed production skills on par with anyone in hip-hop – technically and creatively. “At the top of his game,” says longtime friend and collaborator, Karriem Riggins. After years of building while modestly deferring to others of both greater and lesser notoriety, Dilla finally completed the first solo endeavor on his own label, entirely on his own terms. The significance of such an autonomous success often gets overlooked, and partly accounts for why Ruff Draft is one of the lesser-referenced entries in Dilla’s oeuvre. “It’s a mysterious little project,” says his mother, Maureen Yancey. “But out of his entire career, that was the happiest time.” Prior to recording the EP, Dilla found himself at a crossroads. Estranged from his label, MCA, and separated from the mother of his youngest daughter, frustration abounded both personally and professionally. Dilla spent parts of 2002 and 2003 working on an album for MCA that featured his rapping over contributions from other producers with whom he had connected and whose music he respected. At the time, he was known primarily for his beats, yet reviled for his MCing by most anyone not from his hometown of Detroit. The project was to be an intentional freak of the industry. The project would go on to spur his collaborative album with Madlib, Jaylib, and would first showcase the template that he would take to his greatest heights with 2006’s Donuts. The Stones Throw reissue of Ruff Draft from 2008 featured remixes of the songs from the album, done without Dilla’s involvement. This version of the album takes Dilla’s recently discovered mixes of the album and restores his vision for the project. “Straight from the mothafuckin’ cassette,” as he phrased the sound he was going for on the EP’s intro. It is buttressed by unreleased tracks and is presented in two versions: LP one is the EP as it was originally released; LP 2 is the alternate version that Dilla had for the project. Author Ronnie Reese expands upon his original liner notes to further tell Dilla’s story, in a booklet complete with never before published photographs from the Ruff Draft photo session.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 2017 Stereo Mix

Produced by Giles Martin for this year’s universally heralded ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Anniversary Edition releases, the album’s new stereo mix was sourced directly from the original four-track session tapes and guided by the original, Beatles-preferred mono mix produced by Giles’ father, George Martin. Praised by fans and music critics around the world, The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Anniversary Edition is 2017’s most celebrated historical music release and an ideal gift for Beatle People here, there, and everywhere.

                                          David Live (2005 Mix)

This live album, was recorded during the Diamond Dogs tour. Although drawing of mostly Ziggy era songs, stylistically it sees Bowie moving from glam rock into a new Philly soul influenced direction.

                                            Hard Mix / Star Slinger

                                            Eye Contact / Remedy

Double Denim deliver another split release, and one that's got a lot of our customers in a bit of a lather.

On side A there's "Eye Contact" by Hard Mix, aka Noah Smith from Greenville, South Carolina considered to be the birthplace of the chillwave sound, which this track slots neatly into. Hard Mix produces blissed-out soundscapes from tiny slices of old Motown records. "Eye Contact" throws those snippets together in a downbeat style - very dreamy.

Flip it for "Remedy" by the Nottinghamshire-born and Manchester-based Darren Williams, aka Star Slinger who’s previously collaborated with Teams on a 12″ EP release on Mexican Summer. Slinger samples and splices micro-snippets from old R&B records and regenerates them into electroid pop gems. "Remedy" is a gloriously upbeat and summery jaunt that will chase the winter blues away. One for fans of Phoenix, Teengirl Fantasy, Delorean etc.

                                            Joy Division

Martin Hannett's Personal Mix - Repress

Discovered by friends of Martin Hannett recently and with input from one of his relatives, these recordings give a rare insight into his production ideas for Joy Division and his relationship with the band - the strange things, sound effects - they recorded in the studio together. The studio chit chat and interplay between Hannett, Gretton and Joy Division members is all here as Martin left his own tape machine running throughout studio sessions. On this album we have rare alternative mixes of Joy Division that were Martin's personal favourites and he had the forethought to get the band members to give him control of these recordings. Includes alternative mixes of "Autosuggestion", "Heart And Soul", "24 Hours", "Passover", "The Eternal" (2 mixes), "From Safety To Where" and "Decades" (3 mixes). An essential item for all Joy Division fans.
