MASS APPEAL

Hailing from Virginia Beach, VA, Pusha T got his start as one half of the legendary duo, Clipse. More than a decade later, he has ascended to hip-hop royalty both as an artist and a record executive. His first album proper, "Fear of God II: Let Us Pray", emerged after a trio of hot mixtapes, establishing Pusha T's identity as a solo artist. Far removed from his past as a drug dealer, the street references and gangsta shit largely sits in the rearview here, replaced by the Virginia rappers exploration of luxury lifestyle and the trials and tribulations of a wealthy black man in America. The album features the RIAA Gold certified "Trouble On My Mind" featuring Tyler, The Creator and includes standout performances by the biggest names in hip-hop such as Kanye West, 50 Cent, Meek Mill, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, French Montana and Pharrell Williams. This limited reissue is available for a limited time only on Mass Appeal Records in celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the iconic label.

    The Mountain Will Fall

Five years after the smoked out, kaleidoscopic collage "The Less You Know The Better", experimental hip hop king and turntablist extraordinaire DJ Shadow returns with "The Mountain Will Fall", a bold new chapter in his unconventional story. This first album for Mass Appeal Records finds Josh Davis exploring new realms in addition to the deep samples and kinetic soundscapes that helped to launch his career 20 years ago. On "The Mountain Will Fall" he’s shifted further toward original composition, assembling a vast experimentation of beats and textures, synthesizers and live instruments including horns and woodwinds into twelve tracks of proper head music. Littered with guest appearances from the likes of Run The Jewels, Nils Frahm, Matthew Halsall, and Ernie Fresh, "The Mountain Will Fall" is a diverse and deep set as suited to early mornings or late nights. The spectral electronics of the title track soon give way to the rolling funk of Run The Jewels topped "Nobody Speaks" before the introspective "Three Ralphs" and "Bergschrund" offer a moment of contemplation. "Depth Charge" and "Mambo" recall the abstract insanity of the producer's earlier career. From there the album weaves through alluring jazz (check out the Matthew Halsall collaboration "Ashes To Oceans") before "Ghost Town" and "Suicide Pact" leave us questioning pretty much everything about life. Deep, textured and way ahead of the curve, this is Shadow at his inimitable best.

Released on the Mass Appeal label comes the long lost vocal album, 'The Diary' which J Dilla completed for MCA in early 2000s featuring previously unreleased material by the legendary producer. The tracks come straight from multi-track masters found on 2-inch tape shortly after Dilla’s passing in 2006. Many were mixed by Dilla himself. Those that weren't have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla’s original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla’s vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present. 'The Diary' is an album of vocal performances recorded between in the early 2000s over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others.
