Barry says: Another absolute stormer from Courtney, though you might have already heard the superb 'Nameless, Faceless' from the 7" a little while ago, and 'City Looks Pretty' and 'Sunday Roast' from the RSD 12", there are a bunch of gems to uncover on this including the snarling skate-punk melodicism of my personal highlight, 'Charity'. Killer.

Wake UP! is the debut album from Californian-based singer songwriter Hazel English. It features the 60s psych-influenced single Shaking, written by Hazel and frequent collaborator Blake Stranathan (Lana Del Rey) as well as timeless dream-pop tunes Off My Mind and Five And Dime. The album was recorded over a two year period and made in LA with super-producer Justin Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, Angel Olsen) and in Atlanta with Ben H. Allen (Deerhunter, M.I.A, Animal Collective).

On October 22nd 2019 Courtney Barnett performed a unique and special show at the invitation of MTV in her hometown of Melbourne.

The “Unplugged” performance features Barnett as you’ve never heard her before, warm, vulnerable and emotional, performing a stirring set of eight songs to an intimate audience including “Depreston”, “Avant Gardner” and “Sunday Roast”.

Joined by her usual band Dave Mudie and Bones Sloane, she also enlisted cellist Lucy Waldron.

Barnett made the night even more iconic by inviting some of her favourite musicians to collaborate including legendary songwriter Paul Kelly, angelically-voiced New Zealander Marlon Williams and Milk! Records label-mate Evelyn Ida Morris.

The performances include covers of Leonard Cohen, Archie Roach and Seeker Lover Keeper as well as a never-before-heard original track from Courtney herself titled "Play It On Repeat".

Barry says: This MTV unplugged session shows another side to the charismatic rock and or roll of Barnett and team, opting instead for a more meditative and contemplative suite of 'acoustic' numbers (as good as it is, acoustic is a bit of a stretch) all topped with Barnett's unmistakeable vocal prowess. Great stuff.

Barry says: Progressive melodies, effervescent throbbing synths and loungey, shimmering sweeps work their way into your mind below the neon lit vocals and alternating progressive soundcapes. It's a beguiling and absorbing listen, littered with high points aplenty and a plethora of head--nodding grooved-out moments. Top stuff.

Shock Machine is the new project from the Mercury and Ivor Novello winning artist James Righton (formerly of Klaxons).

His eponymous debut album is a collection of timeless pop music that embraces inspiration from decades of off-kilter classics, such as ELO, Roxy Music, 70s McCartney, “Benny and the Jets by Elton John on acid”, alongside a passion for ultra vivid shimmering psychedelia - the result is a gorgeous celebration of melody and synths.

Recorded in a cabin in the South of France with the help of esteemed producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine, Foals, Haim) and then mixed in Atlanta by Ben H Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Gnarls Barkely), the material has already won fans such as Mark Ronson,The Strokes, Graham Coxon and Erol Alkan, as well as continued support from Pitchfork, Zane Lowe and Annie Mac.

A letter in triplicate addressed to the themes of love, music and Australia, Jen Cloher's fourth album is the culmination of a period of artistic and personal growth in which the artist took her rightful place as a punk-rock figurehead of Melbourne's famous DIY music scene.

She is an outspoken advocate for artist rights and co-founder of the incredible Milk! Records label, which includes the likes of Courtney Barnett and Fraser A. Gorman among its luminaries. Since 2014, her output has been increasingly biting, witty and poetic, with her last album, the critically lauded "In Blood Memory" representing an artistic apex for the artist and garnering her a prestigious Australian Music Prize nomination.

The self-titled album, "Jen Cloher", represents another quantum leap forward for the artist. Recorded amidst the rolling greenery of South-Eastern Australia and mixed at Jeff Tweedy's famous Loft Studios in Chicago, the songs are split by Courtney Barnett's extraordinary lead guitar and anchored by the rhythm section of Bones Sloane and Jen Sholakis. The end result is bold, assured, and piercingly observed, seeing Cloher face up to painful truths with unwavering honesty and emerge triumphant.

Hazel English is a 25-year-old Oakland-based artist who makes beautifully blurry indie-pop music powered by transcendent melodies and caked in layers of Californian sunshine and redolent reverb.

She finds herself something of a scene queen amidst the burgeoning jangling happenings of the Bay Area, which count the likes of her producer Jackson Philips aka Day Wave amongst it ranks, as well as kindred spirits like Craft Spells and Hot Flash Heat Wave, to name but a few. Despite the fun being had locally, Hazel describes her music as, “Transportive. It makes you feel like you’re in a different place”.

A very literal example is the title track, which charters the bittersweet abandon of her runaway journey from her native Australia to her new adopted home in an near-cinematic narrative. She’s drawn comparisons to everyone from Alvvays and Pains Of Being Pure At Heart to touring partners Ride, while her soaring, hypnotic, vocal arrangements have been likened to everyone from Grimes to Diiv.

Since the release of 2013’s ‘Howlin’ Jagwar Ma have played sold out shows across the world and supported the likes of Tame Impala, The xx and Foals, filling festival tents and clubs alike with their explosive, hypnotic live performances, not to mention legendary DJ sets - most recently illustrated through their televised Park Stage performance at Glastonbury, and a raucous closing DJ set at the Crows Nest the same weekend.

Now the song-writing duo of multi-instrumentalist and producer Jono Ma, singer and guitarist Gabriel Winterfield return with their second album ‘Every Now & Then’.

The new record returns to the melody soaked nods to club culture and instantaneous vocal hooks they’ve become well known for, but has also seen them employ their passion for the Beastie Boys, citing this eclectic album as their ‘Paul’s Boutique’. Overall this stunning record encapsulates the band at their most entrancing and anthemic – a wig out of oscillating acid bassline, ricocheting dub-fused guitars and heady pop psychedelia bathed in strobe-lit sonics.

It was self-produced and recorded in the United Kingdom, Australia and France, then tweaked and mixed with the assistance of some of their brightest contemporaries, James Ford (Florence and The Machine, Arctic Monkeys), Blue May (Kwes, Kindness), Ewan Pearson (LCD Soundsystem, Chemical Brothers) and David Wrench (Caribou, FKA Twigs, Glass Animals).

Fraser A Gorman arrives on our shores with a bagful of cool, funny, heartfelt and super-infectious tunes, on debut album 'Slow Gum.' Records label troupe and close pals and collaborator with King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizzard, Gorman cuts a dash entirely his own.

He drinks deep from the well of wayward folk contemporaries such as Bill Callahan and Cass McCombs, while also genuflecting to heroes such as Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Its lackadaisical charms bely Gorman's wryly affecting way with a lyric, however, as he sings tongue in cheek couplets over gorgeous slide guitar twangs and early offbeat melodies.

Fraser A Gorman has achieved a great deal in the past 12 months firmly establishing himself as one of Australia’s most promising rising talents. His captivating songwriter abilities and charismatic live performances have secured his place on some of Australia’s most loved festival bills including Meredith, Falls, Queenscliff Port Fairy and Boogie. He has also supported the likes of Mark Lanegan, First Aid Kit, Tex Perkins, Gary Clarke Jr., Wanda Jackson, You Am I and Simone Felice.

We Are Shining, aka producers Morgan Zarate and Acyde, are spontaneous, unpredictable and utterly uncategorisable. Their debut album Kara is a wild ride, twisting and turning from scuzzy blues riffs to squiggly, irresistible melodies, held together by ferocious rhythms and the untethered power of Acyde's voice.

Anything goes: each cut is packed with details from psychedelic synths to gospel choirs. Zarate (the ex-Spacek member who has latterly gained recognition for his brilliant club-focused singles for Hyperdub) and Acyde have known each other since their '90s Mo Wax days, but it was only in 2011 that this shared vision started to take shape. They imagine their music visually - if it was a film, it would be one following a journey along a lost highway - and have been inspired by house parties in Jamaica and Africa where guests would take turns to do their thing on the mic.

A roster of guest singers from Shingai Shoniwa (Noisettes) to Roses Gabor get down and dirty in the We Are Shining cauldron, providing a sweet, soulful counterpoint to the dense, fuzzy layers of sound. There's an incredible energy to Kara, but We Are Shining are always in control of the propulsive kinetic thrust of their music, which sounds like nothing else out there.

Jagwar Ma, the duo Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield, first bonded in Sydney, Australia over a mutual passion of melody and experimental beats, setting out to create a sound that would capture their love for contemporary electronica & classic American pop harmony, Joe Meek & King Tubby, vintage drum machines & radio frequency manipulation, Ray Davies’ vintage amp noise and improvised percussion. Hot on the heels of powerhouse singles ‘The Throw’ and ‘Man I Need’, Jagwar Ma are now pleased to announce their debut album Howlin

The album was recorded in a secluded town in the North of France, just the two of them in an almost farm with an 808, a Fender jaguar, a laptop & a pair of vintage Neve console channels, and neighbors with a thing for hardcore sound systems. Collaborators along the way included long-time friend & Warpaint drummer, Stella Mozgawa and renowned Berlin producer/mixer, Ewan Pearson, adding another station to the globe-spanning journey the songs have travelled.

Across its eleven tracks, Howlin twists addictive hooks around often dirty and clanking breakdowns. Pop songwriting is buried in layers of crunching synths and pedal effects, from 60’s beat to the strobe-lit warehouses of acid house via the techniques and sonic feel of dub and the touchstones of anthemic British guitar music, reveling in the vibrant tension between the discovery of something classic and future-looking experiments
