This record is a Chicago collaboration between Vick Lavender and a legendary singer and producer, Ron Carroll. Ron is best known as the voice of timeless winners like Back Together, Angel and Lucky Star. Vick Lavender is a high profile producer and remixer and a regular on Cataleya Music. He runs his own Sophisticado Recordings label and has recently released two LPs, Beyond and Time Traveler. All I Got For You (Is Love) is a proper vocal anthem. US outfit Garth only left behind a small trail of records, but this obscure 1980 7" still carries the peculiar charm of disco's stranger back rooms. Recorded between New York and Los Angeles across the late 70s, 'Special Part Of My Life' opens in warm, soulful territory through Henrietta Pam Garth's soft vocal glide, before J. Albert Garth gradually enters the frame and pushes the track somewhere more feverish and floor-facing. There's a lovely looseness to it all: the groove is slightly frayed at the edges in that very particular pre-digital way. On the flip, 'The Groove' heads somewhere far murkier, featuring wiggling synth effects and huge hovering atmospherics drifting over the top of the beat that gives the whole thing this faintly eerie quality which, honestly, makes it all the better.

Lex Walton (née Alex) is an American songwriter, actress, prose poet, and filmmaker whose work is unflinchingly confessional, and whose live performances are filled with ecstatic masochism and flailing. The chart-topping, multi-Platinum and Ivor Novello-winning Passenger returns with a new album ‘Wild Love’. Passenger - real name Mike Rosenberg - was inspired by recently (and unexpectedly) becoming a husband and father. ‘Wild Love’ captures the whirlwind of emotions as their relationship developed - the excitement, the upheaval, the trepidation and the joy. Passenger says, “Going from a working relationship to a romantic one is scary. The older you get, the more of the spikier sides of love you’ve seen. Things go sour for all sorts of reasons and with someone so close, the stakes are so much higher. ‘Wild Love’ is the title track because it sums up the theme of the album. Ma Ze Music is just seven releases deep but is already overdelivering on expectations. This latest offering is a second from Yanuka, which is the solo project of acclaimed keyboardist, composer and producer Tomer Zuk. Here he hooks up with Elran Dekel on 'Where Is My Love' for a gently psyched-out and global soul and downtempo fusion that pairs textured guitar riffs with cartoon boings, conscious vocal musings and a blend of romantic and heart-aching moods. It's warm and intimate and then Ma Ze's regulars UV & Nenor take care of the flip with 'Where Is The Dub' which strips the original to a hazy, slow-motion dub.

'Love & Other Lies' teems with a dark sentimentality and a pronounced gloomy sensibility drawing from British new wave, post-punk, goth, and 1960s rock n’ roll. Strains of The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Tears for Fears, and even The Beatles abound. Hegna’s emotive baritone is swathed in period-perfect Prophet-5 synthesizers and glistening counter-melody guitars lines, and supported by intricate but lyrical basslines and cold and mechanical drums. The lyrics are veiled, visceral, and abstract, yet peppered with shard’s of truth from Hegna’s life and his observations. They reflect a modern world where reality itself feels increasingly tenuous, truth is subjective, communities are shattered by irreconcilable division, and a collective malaise hangs in the air. In this dystopia, if love is merely another lie, it suggests a bleak outlook for our future; essentially, the title is a fancy way of saying that “We Are All Fucked.” 'Love & Other Lies' picks up where it’s previous album, 'Reverb & Seduction', left off. That album was a radical departure from Federale’s previous releases which featured mostly instrumentals. “There are a lot more similarities than you think,” he says of the group’s seemingly two distinct aesthetic periods. “When we were referencing the obscure influences, we liked the drama and darkness. Those elements are in new wave, goth, and post-punk. I just grabbed another couple of colors from the Crayon box.”

The Twelve Songs Of Christmas tells the whole story by covering a dozen Christmas number ones, stretching from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1950 - a song that feels like it's been around forever - to Wham's Last Christmas, which finally made it to number one in 2023, thirty-nine years after it was first released.

Each chapter will talk about the background behind each song, the songwriter and the performer. Not all of them will be Christmas songs - the Beatles dominated the Christmas number one slot in the sixties, and the Spice Girls likewise in the late nineties, but none of them were Christmas songs. Pink Floyd's one and only number one single soundtracked a bleak Christmas at the end of the seventies, with the country, a few months into the Thatcher era, in a depressing state of flux.

The book also digs into the Christmas records that didn't make it to number one, including lesser-known gems like Kate Bush's December Will Be Magic Again, denied in 1980 as the world mourned the death of John Lennon, and Mariah Carey's leviathan All I Want For Christmas Is You, which has still never made it to become the Christmas number one, even in the streaming era.

At the beginning of this year, Dry Cleaning released their new album, Secret Love. The third album from the London-based group consisting of lyricist Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton and bassist Lewis Maynard received glowing accolades across the globe. Now, Dry Cleaning announce this expanded version, Secret Love (Deluxe Edition), featuring three brand-new tracks recorded during album sessions with producer Cate Le Bon last year; ‘Grass’, ‘I Have The Key’, and the recently released single, ‘Sliced by a Fingernail’.

For the deluxe edition, BULLYACHE (who choreographed visualisers for all 11 songs of Secret Love), joined forces with the band again to visuals for the three new tracks, all shot at the Mandrake Hotel in London. Secret Love (Deluxe Edition) also features alternate Erica Eyres artwork.

Bassist Lewis Maynard comments: “As difficult as it is to choose the final tracklist, we've learned with previous records that songs which don't make the album will see the light of day and sometimes even receive more attention. This is the first time we've released a deluxe edition, and we're especially excited because it includes some of our favourite songs from the session.”

Florence Shaw says: “The three new songs have a lot of tenderness and vulnerability to them. They’re about feelings of love and loss but also humour that comes along with those heavy feelings.

‘Sliced by a Fingernail’ is about looking for places to hide; fantasies like packing yourself into the centre of a huge flower bud, but also more everyday ones like being part of the crowd at a karaoke bar.

‘Grass’ is about grieving for someone still alive. The lyrics use some metaphors from nature inspired by two trips; one to see the melting Rhône Glacier in Switzerland and the other to Laurissilva, the ‘living fossil’ ancient forest on the island of Madeira. Whilst it has lots of imperfections and was a bit improvised, Cate [Le Bon, producer] had a real affinity for the vocal performance we chose for this track.

The lyrics to ‘I Have The Key’ came from a feeling of sadness and helplessness at the state of the world. The genocide in Gaza had begun around the time I was writing some of the lyrics. The saxophone part was improvised by Bruce Lamont at the Loft studio in Chicago, and the structure and delivery of the vocal, as well as the choice of words came as a response to his playing.”

“These are three short films that sum up our response to the record,” say BULLYACHE. “We tried to contain all the beautiful conflicts and contrasts. Each video is a portrait of elation, grief, push and pull. With Nicole Nevitt and Sam Dilke playing the different poles of the songs, Nicole’s hair whipping against Sam’s exhaustive thrash against the luxury of the Mandrake Hotel.”

In support of Secret Love, the year has already seen Dry Cleaning play shows across North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. The next leg of their tour takes the band to South America and back to the UK and Europe for festival appearances including Rock en Seine, Green Man, Latitude, Sonic City, with more to be added.

On Dummy’s new album, 'do you love the color of the sky?', the Los Angeles-based 5-piece deliver a breathtaking piece of work that introduces new textures and rhythms to their already varied and refined catalog. For the band’s third album, and first for new label home Polyvinyl, the group split time between self-recording at their home studio as well as Studio 22, linking up with frequent collaborator and engineer Joo-Joo Ashworth (Corridor, Automatic, Spiral XP). The band focused on intentionality and experimentation, exploring downtempo dance beats and electronic music while pushing the guitar as far as they could, using new self-sampling and processing techniques. Percussionist Alex Ewell’s overall sound design and production skills can be heard across the album, with layered drum sounds and rhythmic tremolo techniques shining throughout. Tracks like 'Full Spectrum Dominance' and 'Alluvial Fan' showcase the band’s tasteful pop sensibilities, while closing track 'Heaven’s What You Make Of It' features perhaps the strongest vocal delivery yet from vocalist/keyboardist Emma Maatman. Additionally, the dynamic exchange between guitarists Joe Trainor and Nathan O’Dell is absolutely gorgeous, adding a new layer of immersion and directness that is unlike anything the band has done before. The result is Dummy’s most ethereal and sincere record to date, with more feminine and delicate undertones that sit beautifully alongside the gritty and noisy textures the band has become known for.

Love or its absence dominates the intimate songs on the new album from ARBORIST – the musical outlet of Mark McCambridge. 'Looking For Love', Arborist’s fourth album of exquisitely inventive Americana, places us firmly in his hometown of Belfast, allowing it to act as a microcosm of the wider-world, with all its foibles and charms. We find fictional protagonists scouring the dark corners of the city, wiling-away afternoons in strip clubs, wandering the streets in all weather and reflecting on the harsh reality of modern society, all in search of an elusive love – emphasising our need for it now more than ever.

'Looking for Love' is Arborist’s first album to be self-produced by McCambridge, largely from his home studio in Belfast – and at times it feels like we are in the room with him. It’s a different kind of record for him as previously he has always sought collaboration; whether it be with Kim Deal who chose to sing intertwined harmony on his debut single 'Twisted Arrow', or recording in The Curfew Tower owned by The KLF’s Bill Drummond who described Mark’s songwriting as being “riven with more loss than any record since Leonard Cohen quit this world”, and who Matthew E White and his Spacebomb band collaborated with to such astonishing effect on the previous Arborist LP, 2023’s 'An Endless Sequence of Dead Zeros', winner of the prestigious Northern Ireland Music Prize. This time, with no outside producer steering the way, McCambridge found that the quiet hours were where he felt most at ease, despite periods of trial and error, and, by his own admission, moments of feeling genuinely lost in it all.

Despite playing many of the parts himself, McCambridge still called upon old friends from the community around him; Spacebomb’s resident bassist Cameron Ralston (Bonnie Light Horseman, Hiss Golden Messenger) again features throughout the record, alongside Eamon Ferris (The Waterboys) on drums, with the great and the good from Belfast’s vibrant music scene. Grainne Meyer plays concert harp and Aga Olek plays violin for the quasi-title track 'Looking 4 Love' – an off-kilter love-letter to Belfast. Meilana Gillard provides a sleazy saxophone on 'Bye Bye Johnny Cash' – a seedy tale of a man obsessively visiting a dancer in a club, and The Larne Community Youth Choir provide backing vocals for 'Go Kill The Fatted Calf' – a song Mark wrote about his son growing up, a take on the parable of the prodigal son, with Jonny Ashe’s blistering guitar solo adding an album highlight. The Errigal Ensemble String Quartet and Aisling Agnew’s breathtaking flute solo feature on 'What Is It You’re Asking' – a song about love, or its absence, both personally and universally in these times.

The album was engineered by longtime collaborator Ben McAuley (Van Morrison) and mixed by Jimmy Robertson (Anna Calvi, Beth Gibbons, Fat Dog). The results are staggering, devastating and uplifting in equal measure, calling to mind albums such as Songs Ohia’s 'Magnolia Electric Co'., The Divine Comedy’s 'Regeneration', The Blue Nile’s 'Hats' and Wilco’s 'Ode to Joy', as well as early-70s records from John Cale, John Lennon and Bill Fay.

Disc one includes the original album fully re-mastered, and the brand new second disc features 13 bonus tracks recorded between the years of 2013-2015, mostly by Dimitri at home on a Tascam Portastudio, including single 'Heathers (2013)' which was an early version of what would later become 'i love you very much forever' and other never before heard demos, b-sides, and alternate versions of the original songs.

Catching up with Thee Sinseers ahead of their new Colemine Records release, 'Love Stories', one thing becomes abundantly clear: this is not an LP that explores a neat and tidy love story. It isn't interested in the happy ending. It's interested in everything that comes before it, after it, and in spite of it.

On this LP, the band leaned into earthier instrumentation — standup bass, guitars run through amplifiers for a warmer sixties-adjacent tone — pulling inspiration from wherever it presented itself, even the most unlikely of places. It's that cross-genre thinking that Quiñones sees as the record's defining quality. "It didn't feel like we were making soul music at any point," he says. "It felt like we were making our music."

The band sought to capture something more honest than a highlight reel — showcasing the highs and lows of romantic relationships while expanding the frame to include the familial, the complicated, and the unresolved. The band's parents appear in the album art, their own love stories folded into the record's visual identity, some of those stories still standing, others not. As Manjarrez puts it: "Every single song title directs you down a different road of love — whether you win or lose." Quiñones wanted listeners to sit with that ambiguity. "Love is never-ending," he says. "It stretches beyond lifetimes. I want people to still be confused — I want it to be left like an open book."

Yet one thing remains constant throughout: Thee Sinseers' commitment to where they come from. That East LA identity doesn't announce itself — it simply exists, woven into the fabric of the music without being worn as a badge. There's no performance of heartbreak here, just the real thing. Like an unsent love letter finally delivered, 'Love Stories' carries the weight of everything that was felt but never quite said. The universality of that feeling is perhaps best captured in Quiñones's own words: "It's never too late to change. It's never too late to tell a person you love that you love them."

In a world increasingly shaped by disposable content, Chat Pile answer with something defiantly real and organic, a mentality that permeates 'Who Loves The Sun', their third full-length record. Since the band’s formation just over six years ago, the Oklahoma City-based quartet Chat Pile has grown from a scrappy passion project into one of the defining heavy acts to emerge from the 2020s underground. Ray B. (vocals), L. Manhole (guitar), Stin (bass), and Cap’n Ron (drums) create a crushing, crass, and cathartic take on noise rock that captures a raw, undeniably human essence in an age marked by technological overreach and the cold state of society. Nothing about 'Who Loves The Sun' feels synthetic.

Whereas their debut album 'God’s Country' depicted a particularly American flavor of dread, and the follow up 'Cool World' showed a cruel planet defined by global systemic violence, 'Who Loves The Sun' peels the skin back on how collective indifference defines this new century. Spanning imagery of coastlines devouring cities, dead-end jobs, and submission to data-driven inauthenticity, the album dissects the apathy-bloated state of 21st-century existence as a slow-motion apocalypse.

As with much of Chat Pile’s work, Oklahoma City itself looms over the album like a character, its sprawling isolation, economic contradictions, and underlying sense of decay embedded in the fabric of the record. The perfect allegory for the thematic essence of 'Who Loves The Sun' is the photo embossed on the record’s cover, where Devon Tower, a glassy, largely vacant monolith, looms high above the Oklahoma City skyline while a burnt-out home or storefront envelops the foreground.

The album remains lyrically and sonically confrontational, but Chat Pile approached the songwriting with hooks in mind, drawing on melodic tones of pre-2000s indie rock, alt-rock, and new wave. From the blood-soaked vocal passages of 'Christabel ’26' to the eerie trip-hop pulse of 'Same Rules', 'Who Loves The Sun' is deeply human despite its allusions to a dying, divided .

Barry says: Another dissonant, throbbing slab of mayhem from Chat Pile, swimming with glumness and absolutely brimming with chug. This time round, the grind factor is cranked up to 11, and it's a perfectly fitting place for Chat Pile to sit. For me, the perfect fusion of modern hardcore and noise metal.

Freddie McGregor's Showcase album, released in 1981 and known in the UK as 'Lover's Rock Showcase Jamaica Style', marked a pivotal moment in the singer's career. Prior to this, McGregor had enjoyed only modest success, though his work, crafted with various producers, had consistently showcased a talented artist with an authentic voice. 'LOVE', Dexys Midnight Runners latest, possibly last ever album, is a luminous collection of scenes and reckonings. Stories of family and friends, tales from past and present. All drawn from Kevin Rowland’s life, each an individual jewel, threaded together with love. Songs begun three decades ago sit alongside those written in the last year. A vivid depiction of Rowland's Irish immigrant childhood (‘My Life in England Pt 1’); a moving letter to his grandchildren (‘You’re Alright’); a wistful moment at the start of a love affair (‘I Want To Be Holding You Next Christmas’); a pin-perfect portrait of time spent with a dying parent (‘Once A Man, Twice A Child’); the difficulties of relationships when you're older (‘Old Love’). All deeply personal, all true, all here; the full human span of relationships, family and intimate emotion.

The theme of this album - Kevin's ninth, Dexys' seventh - gradually emerged as the songs progressed. "I don’t remember when it happened, but I just thought, 'Hang on, these are all love songs, of different kinds',” he says. "I knew then: Call it 'LOVE'." These are love songs, but not of the usual pop style. Not will-she-won't-she romance, but something more emotional and all-encompassing. Those small moments that illustrate a rollercoaster sweep. "Everyone came at this project with love," he says. To tell a lifetime of different loves. A love life.

'LOVE' is also their first album under the Dexys Midnight Runners name since 1985’s 'Don’t Stand Me Down'. “We realised a couple of years ago that some young people know Dexys Midnight Runners from ‘Geno’ and ‘Come On Eileen,’ but some that we spoke to, were confused by the name, Dexys. And some, thought Dexys was a different outfit to Dexys Midnight Runners.,” says Kevin. “Since Dexys returned in 2012, we’ve always felt what we do is worthy of a young audience, so it was a no brainer to revert to Dexys Midnight Runners”.

Those familiar with Kevin’s wonderful autobiography, Bless Me Father, will recognise some of the people in these songs: his dad, his brother, his first love, more recent romances. But this is a Dexys Midnight Runners album, the group of players where Kevin began his music career, and where he works best. So his lyrics are explored and highlighted, lifted to greater heights by the songwriting and creativity of long-time collaborators Sean Read, Mike Timothy and Jim Paterson. There are strings, too, arranged by Brian Irving, originally from Belfast.

Fellow Belfast man, DJ and musician David Holmes, is the album's producer. Holmes had long wanted to work with Kevin and Dexys: “They were the first act I was ever truly obsessed with, the first I saw live”. David's older sister bought him a Walkman when he was 11, and his first cassette was Searching For the Young Soul Rebels. When Kevin sent him a demo of ‘Once A Man, Twice a Child’ (written with Sean soon after Dexys' triumphant 2024 Glastonbury appearance), David was captivated. "His song writing is so strong," he says.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A much-lauded return for Dexy's Midnight Runners, and a welcome return to the sort of high-flying anthemic pop and soulful indie we've come to know from Rowland and Co. There are moments of thoughtful introspection and slow-building tentativeness but the take-home is definitely that of a rejuvenated, excited band reliving their peak with aplomb.

On the A is 'Not This Time (Baby) (Give Me Some Moore Mix)' a much loved slice of Philly Disco, absolutely bursting with lush orchestral arrangements. This classic jam has been given a noticeably different refresh, with a show-stopping acapella intro and more of the less heard instrumental passages. Speaking of classic, on the B is 'Jammin' Up In Smoke (Ready Steady Eddie Mix)' a Harris Machine gospel-charged chugger, which is given a more groove based mix, which builds up instrumentally before hitting some falsetto vocals half way through, leading to a big hands in the air finale. Following the release of their debut in late July, Luft quickly return now with a second single, ‘The Punch and Judy Man’. As with that previous single, the digital release is to later be complemented by a limited edition 12” single backed with a vinyl only B-side.

‘The Punch and Judy Man’ once again sees the Berlin-based five-piece working with Luke Haines, a union that increasingly makes great artistic sense given their shared interests in post-new wave pop dynamics and subject matter that scratches the facade of the routines of English suburban life to reveal hidden charms both romantic and malign. Frontman, Tom Dougall, of course has a history of this kind of approach, having also served as the singer in cult-favourites TOY for over a decade, though his choice of imagery and songwriting now feels sharper than ever, the nostalgic references to a bygone era only vaguely disguising the sense that all might not be well. “Behind your back the song’s begun, hear the trickster play the fool” he sings, and with it plugs into that classic British tradition - be that in the songs of Black Box Recorder and Pulp or the films of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh - of uncovering something more sinister lurking amidst the apparently banal.

The man behind the mask, Jonathan Bree, returns with his sixth studio album 'Don’t Call It Love'. Officially a double album spanning 17 tracks, 'Don’t Call It Love' is an erotic concept driven work exploring sexuality and featuring collaborations with women across music, film, photography, and dance. The album’s steamy standard was set with single 'Live To Dance', featuring Princess Chelsea, which was accompanied by a strictly adults-only video which paid homage to Duran Duran’s 'The Chauffeur', featuring ballerina and cabaret artist Bella Filbey, whose exposed, erotic pose is the centerpiece of 'Don’t Call It Love’s striking cover. Fans have drawn comparisons to the darkly nostalgic tones of New Order and Siouxsie & The Banshees, with Bree’s sound reaching an ’80s-soaked, melancholic destination – his trademark orchestral arrangements now paired with a stark noir aesthetic, cinematic instrumentation, and his brooding baritone.

Originally recorded in 1968 and slated for release on Sire Records, 'Microminiature Love' by outsider-folk/psych-rock icon Michael Yonkers languished unreleased until unearthed and issued by De Stijl Records as a limited, vinyl-only pressing in 2002.

Back then,  Aquarius Records described it better than we ever could: “An obscure late-sixties ahead-of-his-time visionary gets his due with this LP reissue. Yonkers’ stuff was like nothing anyone had heard back then (or even now really): fucked-up garage psych with dementedly genius lyrics and crazy acid-fried guitar. Yonkers, a legendary Minneapolis-area figure, built his own effects pedals, cut his Fender Telecaster down to a plank, and played like no one else ever. I’m at a loss of words on how to describe this. It’s sort of like a fusion of stripped down Black Sabbath, The Troggs, Pere Ubu, and The Cramps??” Sub Pop subsequently released the album on CD, and then in 2011 did a limited vinyl pressing, which has been out of print for many years.

Sadly, Michael Yonkers passed away in 2026 during the planning of this reissue. An incredible, truly singular artist, and one of the sweetest people they'd ever met, Sub Pop hope that this release helps shine a light on his artistic legacy.

For any other artist, an album like Asher White’s Love Aggregates might come out of a conscious push to treat no idea as off-limits, to make something bold and new. Jubilant art-funk about cocaine addiction—absolutely. Swooning orchestral pop about Jerry Garcia—why not? Rippling electronic noise, jazzy brushed drums, an elderly motorcyclist with dementia, a profoundly emotional bass solo—put them all in one song. There are threadbare folk tunes, glammed-up power-pop bangers, “Sir Duke” horn charts, Morton Feldman string arrangements, layers of guitar feedback like violins made of liquid chrome. Yes, for another artist, Love Aggregates might be the most adventurous album in their catalog. For Asher White, it’s what passes for settling down.

White is 25 years old and has been making records—writing, recording, producing, and playing almost everything herself—for over a decade. She’d released two dozen of them on Bandcamp before catching the indie-rock industry’s attention with 2024’s Home Constellation Study and last year’s 8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living. The latter album’s dizzy eclecticism and formidable craft landed her on Rolling Stone’s Future 25 list with the likes of xaviersobased and Oklou, along with a slew of other accolades. That came as something of a surprise to White, who didn’t craft the chaotic 8 Tips with a breakthrough in mind. Love Aggregates feels like a chance, for one of the most thrilling musical talents of her generation, at a more deliberate introduction.

She wrote and recorded her new album while her previous one was gathering
momentum, tinkering in the DIY recording studio where she always works, acutely conscious now that people would be listening to whatever she came up with. At around the same time, her years-long romantic relationship ended in a flurry of betrayal and addiction, her first experience of devastating heartbreak. Even so, Love Aggregates is not a bitter album about wallowing or seething, but instead making use of those impulses as raw materials in work that transcends the specificity of its origins, fashioning them into something surprising and new.

Bogdan Ra kicked off his new label Love Affair with some banging house cuts that threw it back to early Chicago styles. This third outing flips the script and shows his range with four disco sounds that take their cues from the late 70s and 80s: all the hallmarks are there, from the classic synths and vocoders to dusty drum machines. 'Complimento' is a smooth title track, while 'Shout' is a French-tinged funk workout., 'Paramour' glides through cosmic disco textures, while 'Fire in Cairo' brings an unexpected vocal twist and acrobatic bassline full of movement. Charming stuff.

Thee Heart Tones return with an instant classic. “Don’t Forget Me Love” sets the mood from the first snare hit, and lead singer Jazmine Alvarado’s unmistakable vocals cement the magic that only Thee Heart Tones can conjure. The band are all just about 20 years old, and having toured the US coast to coast sharing stages with everyone from Thee Sacred Souls to Lady Wray to Lexa Gates, the growth in their sound is undeniable. Teaming back up in the studio with producers Leon Michels (El Michels Affair / Clairo) and Tommy Brenneck (Menahan Street Band / Charles Bradley), with additional co-production from Kevin Martin (Brainstory), they bring back the chemistry that made their debut such a hit while pushing the whole sound forward. The B Side “Sing Your Song” is the instrumental version of the A side, and the track being used for the Big Crown 10 Year Anniversary Talent Contest. Brighton-based Swedish songwriter, poet and multi-instrumentalist Nina Winder-Lind debut solo album 'Wild Love'.

Best known as a member of the electrifying 'Hagstone rock' four-piece The New Eves, Winder-Lind's solo work channels the same raw intensity and liberatory spirit while revealing a more intimate, deeply personal side to her songwriting. These recordings originally had the working title "The Side Effects of Life" and were demos for what would become Coil's classic 1991 album "Love's Secret Domain" and parts of the "Wrong Eye/Scope" 7" released on Stefan Jaworzyn's Shock label. The demos were sent to Wax Trax! Records on cassette, prior to the label issuing "Love's Secret Domain". The tape was one of only a handful known to exist and offers a glimpse into the formation and evolution of LSD.

One of Teddy's final moments on Elektra, "Believe It Love", released in 1993 and found our baritone soul bad boy having to prove his might against the new wave of r'n'b stars. Effortlessly brushing them to the side with this smooth rolling, deep soul gem. Both mixes roll on a summery, fat, slo-mo kick-snare groove underpinned by galvanized slab bass, with airy female chorus and lofty Rhodes lines.

One of Talking Heads best-loved tracks, but not a club play until now. Brilliantly reimagined for the dancefloor by Loveface, and right on topic given its original title, ‘Life During Wartime’. This is a surefire proven party favourite following pre-release plays, coupled with ‘Tarot’, an early-‘80s Italo gem, which was brought back into circulation 22 years on, via an Idjut Boys re-edit, and now, another 22 years down the line, Misui’s wonderfully fluid take on this mesmeric track brings it back into focus.

Two house heavyweights take on Dido's 2008 downtempo classic, "Don't Believe In Love". Big Joe steps up first with one of his 'Edits and Overdubs', imparting lots of Instant House-era drums along with that techy low-end hook and allowing the vocals to drift hypnotically in the background of the mix.

Dennis Ferrer utilizes that same, instantly recognizable, techy hook whilst using grain delays and such like to scrub the vocal up in a technoid manner, similar to the Carl Craig remix of "Good Life". Adding one of his typically Objektive groove palettes to proceeds, Ferrer's version is crisp and aimed squarely at the high tech soundsystems of the nightclub.

Excellent stuff by both parties. Stupendously limited copies. Move quick.

A best of both worlds reissue of the two most sought after tracks on Keith Cole's Lovebird imprint. Keith cut some sides for producers in Jamaica in the early '70s before coming to New York and starting his own Lovebird label, mostly self producing thru the first half of the '80s. The A-side here "Honey Bee Fantasy" is a killer slow burner of mid '80s boogie/funk, featuring a couple of well known American jazz/funk session players on the rhythm track. The picture sleeve is a near replica of the one that came with the original press. For the B-side we have Keith's production of Canadian singer Ann Marie, who also does backing vocals on "Honey Bee Fantasy." On "Together Again" she's singing on a well known and loved moody early '80s rhythm, laid by the first incarnation of the Roots Radics which featured Blacka & Bingy Bunny of the Morwells.

Jangling guitar harmonics float through the mix like distant memories. The question remains unanswered: how was this never on Top of the Pops? Pure heartbreak for the dancefloor.

"Talkin Machine" offers a completely unhinged funk-on-roids stick of dynamite fuelled with enough cosmic energy to send the mothership into orbit. Taking a starlit detour on the Godfather of Soul's most famous dancefloor weapon, it's twisted, stretched and rerouted through some seriously wonky cosmic circuitry. Off-kilter rhythms collide with outrageous synth work and a mutant Parliament-style bassline. Equal parts robo-disco, chrome-plated weirdness and pure dancefloor electricity. JB would surely be having cold sweats in his gold-plated casket.

Hope it makes the good folk dance and the pondecos pogo!

A eulogy to a band and a millennium, the year 2000’s collaborative Macha Loved Bedhead has been remastered from the original analog tapes and finally makes its way to the mother format. Recorded long distance by Wichita Falls-born brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane and Josh and Mischo McKay, this five-song, 34-minute EP combines gamelan, slowcore, and a cover of Cher’s 'Believe' pecked out on a touch tone phone into a seamless meditation on life at the end of the American century.

Beggars Banquet's 40th anniversary reissue of 'Discover', the breakthrough album by Gene Loves Jezebel, newly remastered and expanded across a double LP.

The release is completed by 'Glad To Be Alive', a live recording from a show in Nottingham in 1986, pressed to vinyl here for the first time since its original release. Capturing the band in full flight, it offers a raw counterpoint to the studio record. Louder and unrestrained, demonstrating the energy that drove their rapid ascent during this period.

For this 40th anniversary edition, the original album has been remastered by Henry Rudkins at AIR Studios. It is presented on double black vinyl with updated artwork.

Twin brothers Jay Aston and Michael Aston began making music together in 1980, forming their band initially called Slav Arian with guitarist Ian Hudson and a drum machine. Raised in Porthcawl, South Wales, the Astons relocated to London in 1981, where the project evolved into Gene Loves Jezebel.

Originally released in 1986, 'Discover' captures Gene Loves Jezebel at a watershed moment, propelling the band to an international audience. On 'Discover', their sound fully comes into focus, balancing the darker textures of their early work with a sharper, more melodic edge. Built around driving rhythms, chiming guitars and a more expansive sound, the album captured Gene Loves Jezebel hitting their stride with a sound that travelled further than before.

At its centre is 'Desire (Come and Get It)', the band’s most recognisable single. A track that distilled their songwriting into something both urgent and accessible, without losing the edge that defined their early work. Around it, the album moves between taut, rhythm driven tracks and more expansive, grandiose moments.

'Sing Forever (Singing Is Free): Songs from 2021-2023' meets us as a foreword to 'A Profound Non-Event', Daily Toll's debut album from 2025. Offering an earlier chapter in the ever-growing songbook of the Sydney/Gadigal-based group, 'Sing Forever...' is a collection in demo-form that maps their initial formative period as a duo, largely marked by Covid-era isolation, diabolical housemates, sonic experiments and copious amounts of wine sourced from Kata's job at the time.

As bowerbirds of song, Kata and Jasper are making sounds from their own pocket - their world! - singing from nowhere to no-one from (in) a context of global upheaval, loss and mass confusion. Here we find the urge to sing forever, to share a morsel of spirit, and with it a mode of grounding one's humanity. The songs are loose, off-beat and textural, a period of "first thought, best thought" in boundless practice that finds inspiration from all over: a bracelet and a solo afternoon in Budapest; lyrics formed via a black-out poem scrawled across the page of a Neil Young biography; the scratch of paper daisies, toy drums, typewriters, and pots and pans all welcome melodies repeating and fumbling unto themselves until ultimately falling apart and into something else.

These songs were never initially intended to find a physical release or to even be distributed further than the Bandcamp void, and yet here we arrive at a kind of essence of Daily Toll, or at least one iteration thereof, before the studio, before the additional band members, and before being known (perhaps, even loved) by more beyond.

'Sing Forever (Singing Is Free): Songs from 2021-2023' was initially released as a seven song cassette that came with early copies of 'A Profound Non-Event'. Now with the addition of an extra song and a remastering by Mikey Young, it is now released as a limited 12" LP via Tough Love.

Luft are a Berlin-based five-piece led by former TOY frontman, Tom Dougall and joined by Ani Mijatović, Sam Davies, Rob Henderson and Aaron Singh. In covert operation for some time following the dissolution of Dougall's former group, Luft first appeared in the wider public eye in October 2025 via their appearance on Tough Love's 20th anniversary compilation, 'Don't Do Anything Important With Anybody Else'.

They now begin to plot their own course with the release of the Luke Haines (of The Auteurs/Black Box Recorder) produced debut single, 'Something On My Mind', a midnight-dwelling, romance-baiting reverie that envisages the faded glamour of a lost Soho and all the attendant psychodrama that might entail.

'Something On My Mind' is released as a limited 12" (edition of 100), backed by vinyl only B-side 'God Helmet' and housed in a hand-stamped sleeve. Further Luft sounds and live shows are to follow later in 2026.

This is a reissue of a rare killer single by The Moon Boys (aka The Hippy Boys) and The Pioneers as initially produced by Joe Gibbs and released in 1969 on the Amalgamated Records label in Jamaica and in the U.K. that same year. It was only reissued once by Trojan in a box of singles called “Spirit Of '69 - The Boss Reggae Sevens Collection” which is also quite rare today.

Wewantsounds continues its Japanese reissue program with the first official international release of one of the most sought-after City Pop albums out of Japan, the 1979 classic 'Summer-Time Love Song' by The Milky Way. Originally released on the Seven Seas label, the album was produced by Makoto Matsushita with Kazuo Nobuta, representing a peak of the sophisticated studio craft that defined the late-70s Japanese transition into high-fidelity AOR and Jazz-Fusion.

The album serves as a vital precursor to Matsushita’s own 1981 cult masterpiece 'First Light'. Here, he and Nobuta lead the cream of Japanese session musicians—including the renowned Yasuaki Shimizu—through a superb mix of AOR, funk, and Brazilian music. From the sun-drenched bossa nova rhythms of the Jobim classic 'Wave' to a sophisticated rendition of Boz Scaggs’ classic 'Harbor Lights', finishing with the dreamy rhythms of 'Endless Summer', the record is a masterclass in elegant funky arrangements and relaxed harmonies.

As music journalist Paul Bowler writes in the liner notes for this release: "'Summer-Time Love Song' represents a fascinating bridge in Japanese pop history; a moment where the breezy aspirations of the 70s met the meticulous studio perfectionism that would soon take over the world."

This deluxe edition features the original artwork, showcasing classic photography by the cult photographer Shinpei Asai—famed for his iconic work on the Pacific album by Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. First time 12" pressing of Mac Mathunjwa’s “Give Us More Love” from the same-title EP. A jazz dance bomb that remains relatively unknown but deserves recognition as classic in the genre. Originally released in South Africa in 1976, it has never been widely distributed.

We first heard it in Antal’s Worldwide Festival mix in 2017, and the track is currently gaining popularity through sets by DJs like Ge-ology and Marcellus Pittman.

The A-side features the full-length version (12:43), while the B-side is an edited, shorter version (6:23). An absolute banger of a tune! Highly recommended.

Rough Trade Records / Audika Records present a remastered/redux double vinyl rerelease of the much-beloved compilation 'Love Is Overtaking Me' of Arthur’s folk, pop, and country songs including 'Planted a Thought', 'Close My Eyes' and 'I Couldn’t Say It To Your Face'.

Originally released in 2007 the redux edition includes new masters from a recently found pristine tape reel and was remastered by Timothy Stollenwerk at Stereophonic Mastering in Portland, OR. Revised artwork by Molly Smith with extensive liner notes from Arthur’s partner Tom Lee.

Over twenty years ago, Audika Records began compiling and releasing the exceptionally varied, long sought-after music of Arthur Russell, and in the process has succeeded at helping the beloved, late artist find the broader audience he always believed he would reach. A new generation of listeners and critics has come to appreciate Russell as a visionary and an influence upon a broad range of today’s most compelling musical artists.

While much critical and popular affection for Russell’s music has come about well after his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, many fellow artists believed in his genius and were drawn to collaborate with him during his lifetime. The legendary producer John Hammond (Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen) recorded Russell on several occasions; a number of these recordings now heard on 'Love Is Overtaking Me', along with songs recorded with various incarnations of The Flying Hearts, a group formed by Russell and Ernie Brooks whose shifting lineup included, by turns, Jerry Harrison, Rhys Chatham, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon and Peter Zummo as well as Larry Saltzman and David Van Tieghem. Several other Russell projects are represented on Love Is Overtaking Me, including The Sailboats, Turbo Sporty and Bright & Early.

Compiled from over eight hours of material, 'Love Is Overtaking Me' reaches back further to Russell’s earliest compositions beginning in 1973 and spans forward to his very last recordings, made at home in 1991. Several of the songs featured prominently in Matt Wolf’s now herald 2008 film Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell.

Gabi Garbutt is an androgynous queer artist creating lyrical alternative pop with a punk spirit. Gabi’s poetic lyrics are imbued with a magical realism; they are sensual, raw and visually expansive, reflecting their love of the poetry of Audre Lorde, Federico Garcia Lorca and Andrea Gibson, and the surrealist art of Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Joan Miro.

Love, Burns is Phil Sutton, founding member of indie pop legends Comet Gain, once also of Velocette and Kicker, and recently lead singer and songwriter for Brooklyn group Pale Lights. Brooklyn resident, extracted from London, England in 2007, Phil Sutton has also played with more groups over the years, including The Projects, Cinema, Red and Blue, and The Soft City. By day, Sutton is a librarian at The New York Public Library.

'Pavement Drawings' is his third album as Love, Burns, and the band on these recordings are Sutton, Kyle Forester (Crystal Stilts, The Ladybug Transistor and solo) on bass, guitar and keyboards, Hannes Mueller (The BVs, once Jetstream Pony) on drums and percussion and Jo Roman (Starcleaner Reunion, and also with Lightheaded, Betty Brite) on vocals, joined by Alicia Jeanine (Jeanines) on violin, for the duet with Jo, 'Love is Like Semaphore'.

'Pavement Drawings' is an album for the Spring. Just a taster, 'Goodnight, Charlie' is a pop song with a Teenage Fanclub-feel in the verse, stomper in the chorus. 'One More Night in the Park' is a Creation era Felt meets Yo La Tengo pop song. 'Wallflower' is a classic bitter-sweet indie pop song with a hook. 'Love is Like Semaphore' is an indie Baroque pop duet with Jo Roman. 'Baby, Don't Look Away' is a guitar pop attack on apathy. Also included on this album are alternative versions of July '25's smash hits 'Dear Carol' (classic Comet Gain-style pissed off duet) and 'Drawn Together', this time with Jo Roman sharing vocal duties with Sutton.

Laura says: While Jalen's debut album was steeped in early-'70s soulful grooves, Doctrine of Love reaches even further back, drawing inspiration from the sounds of the 1960s.

The album opens with "Anyone in Love", awash with sweeping strings and soulful backing vocals, before launching into the James Brown-inspired lead single and title track, "Doctrine of Love". The uplifting groove of "Mr Train Conductor" is followed by the soul stomper "Burning Temptation", while the sweet melancholy of "Love Is Gone" brings Side One to a close.

On the flip side, "I Can't Ever Leave You" and "Hannah What's the Matter" both explore the complexities of love. The former is a slow burner, punctuated by bursts of horns and bluesy guitar riffs, while the latter is a hook-filled, upbeat number driven by a punchy chorus.

The sweet doo-wop of "Good Good Love" is perhaps the album's most uplifting moment, closely followed by "Hang It on the Shelf". Finally, the melancholic heartbreak of "Taken Out of the Picture" provides a perfect closing statement.

Doctrine of Love is a timeless modern soul album that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Motown release back in the day.

It is the late 1980s, the closing years of Thatcher’s Britain.

For the Trainspotting crew, a new era is about to begin – a time for hope, for love, for raving. Leaving heroin behind and separated after a drug deal gone wrong, Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie each want to feel alive. They fill their days with sex and romance and trying to get ahead; they follow the call of the dance floor, with its promise of joy and redemption.

Sick Boy starts an intense relationship with Amanda, his ‘princess’ – rich, connected, everything that he is not. When the pair set a date for their wedding, Sick Boy sees a chance for his generation to take control at last. But as the 1990s dawn, will finding love be the answer to the group’s dreams or just another doomed quest? 

UnOwn deepen the intrigue of their debut record with a second clutch of shadowy edits, again courtesy of the elusive Fava Luva and Dr. Professor. First up is the airy, mystical 'Sent Ra' which drifts on a Balearic current with an aquatic pulse and low-slung groove. It's for late-night moments on intimate floors and is hella steamy. Flip it and 'Love Giver' is more extroverted but just as sensual with teasing spoken words opening up before a swaggering, gentle groove and deft keyboard flourishes awaken and coalesce into a boogie-tinged delight. Anonymous in name, perhaps, but unmistakable in taste.

So, you've read the music blogs and have driven your flatmates up the wall with "Love Cry" on repeat for the last two months, now here comes the highly anticipated new album from Kieran Hebden; but does it live up to the enormous amount of hype? Luckily, yes, it does! What we have here is someone laying down a palette of sounds and a template of how music will evolve in the 21st century. Rather than simply a set of songs, Hebden showcases new technology and instrumentation in a way that makes you feel like everything before it was simply inferior. Who needs guitars when you have 24-bit polyphonic texture generators? Why not make the vocal part synthesize with the keyboards and create a rhythmic pulse? Hebden is always one step ahead of the game. Four Tet's soundscapes scream of future industry, glistening hi-technology, new ideas and optimism; offering reassurance in a world that could sometimes be feared or mistrusted with the rate of its technological advances. Here, the new is welcomed with a smile and hug, 'it's going to be fine...', you can almost hear Hebden whisper in your ear through a barrage of digital frequencies. And I believe him. From slow ballads, future pop anthems to the more club friendly, forward thinking dance music he is famed for, "There Is Love In You" sets out a whole new vision of making music which in time will be referenced as a classic.

Joe Bataan’s Ghetto Records released Joe Acosta’s 'The Power of Love' LP in 1971. Puerto Rico born Joe Acosta was committed to pursuing a career in salsa and Latin jazz, with piano as his primary instrument. In 1969, Acosta started his first real band, Joe Acosta And His Empresarios, with whom he recorded a self-titled LP.

By 1970-71, Acosta was getting more gigs, playing dances three or four nights a week at popular venues. It wasn't long before manager and booking agent Richie Bonilla signed him to his talent agency and secured a contract for Acosta to record 'The Power of Love' on Ghetto Records.

'The Power of Love' was an apt title: The album is about a range of amorous emotions, from obsession to disillusion, new romance to breakups, lust to affection. Though an English-language title and romantic ballads sung in English were a somewhat odd choice for a hard salsa LP from El Barrio, recorded during a period in which Latinos were rediscovering their sociocultural roots, these were conscious creative decisions by Acosta that have stood the test of time.. It is now beloved among both salsa dura fans for the tough uptempo numbers and with the lowrider "souldies" crowd for its sweet and slow Latin soul track ‘I Need Her.’ There are a number of funky mid-tempo son montunos, as well as three super hard guaguancos— enough variety to make for a solid dancing-and listening experience.

Simon Joyner is among America’s best songwriters, so says Gillian Welch, Conor Oberst, Kevin Morby, and others. "Singer-songwriter" is a frustratingly confining term; to truly understand exactly just how confining, look no further than the recorded works of Simon Joyner, an artist whose work consistently transcends the narrow parameters of genre classifications and record shop bin cards. Though his music has always honored, reckoned with - wrestled with - the tradition set forth by his songwriting forebears (Cohen, Van Zandt, Ochs, Dylan, Reed to name a few), Joyner can always be counted on to defy expectations; as a lyricist, melodicist, and arranger, Joyner likes to keep us on our toes.

Joyner traverses the human predicament, in general, and the American psyche specifically, using fiction to tell difficult truths. Characters struggle through personal crises while absorbing America's currently failing experiment.

Joyner's 19th studio album, continues this upward trend. While intrinsically linked to the personal grief of 2024's 'Coyote Butterfly', the autobiographical album Joyner made in the wake of his son's death, this new album explores the concept of tough love as a dichotomy applied to various fictional relationships including romantic, familial, and political. This balancing act comes through in vivid portrayals of everyday heartache and in the exploration of political rage and the betrayals of the American Dream.

One of the marvels of Joyner's catalog is how his patterns don't repeat but transform. Knowing nods to Cohen, Dylan, and the Velvets have been part of his songwriting since the early lo-fi days, but the ways these touchstones get infused keep changing. While Joyner's ragged acoustic songs are in the spotlight, they're prodded by electric guitars and imbued with experimental tendencies. Rock songs split the difference between minimal grooves learned from 'Loaded'-era Velvet Underground and the ecstatic rhythmic weirdness of Can. By the time we arrive at the penultimate track, 'Anniversary Song', the ghost vocals and scratches of microtonal synth have blurred the lines between Joyner's folk singer heart and his avant garde spirit.

All of this leads to the 20-minute title track which closes 'Tough Love', an eviscerating plunge into a seemingly bottomless pit of regret, survivor's guilt, and unvarnished grief. Borrowing a repetitious structure from Lou Reed's narrated suite, 'Street Hassle', and combined with the full-side testimonial of Dylan's 'Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands', Joyner narrates from the perspective of his departed son speaking to his father and laying out his every failure and brutally highlighting how none of it can be undone. Soon, though, this agony opens up into something transcendent, in both its elegant imagery and ethereal atmospherics. The final moments of the album grant permission for self-forgiveness and hopefully someday, understanding.

Rock ‘n' Roll with the Modern Lovers is the second album released as Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers. The band, which is built around singer-songwriter and guitarist Jonathan Richman, almost totally focuses on the sound from the ‘50s. The lo-fi record breathes folky roots music and rock ‘n roll as it would sound ages ago. “Ice Cream Man”, “Egyptian Reggae” (earning them a UK Top 5 hit) and “Roller Coaster by the Sea” are all superb songs, uncomplicated and wonderful. This is one of the most remarkable projects recorded by Jonathan.

The Modern Lovers were formed in 1970 by teenage singer, songwriter, guitarist Jonathan Richman, augmented with Jerry Harrison (keyboards), Ernie Brooks (bass) and David Robinson (drums), with Richman’s friend and original band member John Felice joining them occasionally.

London trio, thredd’s, acclaimed 2025 debut ‘It’s Lovely, Come On In’ available for the first time on vinyl. thredd is the latest project from musicians Will Lister, Max Winter, and Imogen and The Knife who came together as the first (and only) band formed during the infamous Laylow residency in West London.

Over the course of 4 weeks in November 2023, the trio set up a makeshift studio in Laylow’s basement venue and wrote music to be performed live each Wednesday, embracing a raw, immediate approach with no room for overthinking. The result is a sound they call “cold pop”, a mix of atmospheric textures, sharp melodies, and emotional depth. Since then, they’ve built on their diverse strengths having already played the ICA and supported Nourished by Time across the UK.

Celestial Echo returns with a proper UK soul classic — The Cool-Notes “I Forgot How To Love You”, back on 12” and cut loud for the dancefloor.

Hailing from South London, The Cool-Notes were one of the UK’s most consistent soul outfits through the late ’70s and ’80s. While many know them for their chart successes later in the decade, this early period shows the band in a formative state - warm basslines, tight rhythm section, rich harmonies and that unmistakable Britfunk feel.

“I Forgot How To Love You” is one of those records that’s quietly done the rounds for years. A favourite of Frederika’s back in the day, it’s about time it has it’s first ever reissue.

Presented on 12” in a clean company sleeve, this edition gives the record a new lease of life.

Celestial Echo is here to put proper soul records back into circulation.
