Liquid Liquid

Bellhead / Optimo (Remix)

    RIYL: ESG, Pylon, Konk

DFA no doubt owes a very large part of its existence to the incredible, indelible Liquid Liquid, so it is with great and humble honor that we release this 12” from the New York no wave legends, a double a-side package featuring sorta-new versions of classic Liquids tracks.

This torrential take on “Bellhead” was recorded and produced by James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy in 2004 and originally appeared on DFA”s “Compilation #2.” It’s an all-timer percussion workout, bursting at the seams with marimba, drums, and, yes, all manner of bells, a far cry for the see-saw slouch of the original.

The other side is a heretofore unreleased version of “Optimo,” which - bear with us here - was rerecorded by the Liquids in 2008 and then remixed by Optimo (Espacio), the Glaswegian duo who are named in tribute to the song in question. So, “Optimo” the song remixed by Optimo the people.

If you followed that, then you know. If not, just remember that we’re all showing up here because of how important and essential this band remains.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Massive coup for DFA as they roster in one of the acts that inspired the whole ethos of label for two new versions of "Bellhead".

      Roy Ayers

      Liquid Love / What’s The T?

With both tracks now coming out for the first time on vinyl, the Liquid Love and What's The T? 7” single is a must get for all Roy Ayers fans and serious music collectors, not least as 2023 witnesses Roy's final ever tour of live dates. This release is a fitting tribute to the career of one of the most influential musicians in global Black music history and each track represents his virtuosity as a vibesman and his versatility across genres. Liquid Love is taken from the digital version of the 2015 BBE released compilation of Roy's unreleased material, Virgin Ubiquity II, and is a wicked mid-tempo track where Roy's vibraphone complements an amazing female vocal arrangement to create harmonies and melody over a tough as you like breakbeat, bass line and keyboard riff. Coming from the 2004 initial release in the Virgin Ubiquity series of unreleased Roy Ayer's tracks, What's The T? is a more uptempo, bassline driven slab of dance floor funk. Augmented by a horn section and a huge female vocal from Merry Clayton over a hi-hat drumbeat, What's The T? is Roy Ayers and his musicians playing Roy's arrangements to perfection. Releasing on BBE Music's ALIM imprint, Liquid Love/What's The T? vinyl single issue is two musical moments in time now presented as a moment in history in the year we celebrate the excellent career and legacy of Roy Ayers as a touring musician. This is Roy at his best as musician, arranger and artist, grab this now.

        Flamingods

        Head Of Pomegranate

Flamingods return with new album 'Head of Pomegranate', recorded in Atlanta by Grammy award-winning producer Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, M.I.A.).

The much-loved London quartet have now been crafting their distinctive genre-defying music for over a decade now. Stylistically and in typical nature of a Flamingods record, there are a lot of genres and sounds covered. Weaving through genres of psychedelia, new wave, electronica and punk – often within the same song – is a bit of a specialty for the band, as is their knack for blending in influences from their unique cultural heritages and love of 70s British rock and roll. ‘We’re a band of mixed-race boys making alternative rock music, something that’s quite rare within our scene. We’re very much influenced by our heritage but aren’t engrossed in making traditional or obvious rock music. We’d rather make it our own.’

Album opener and first single Dreams (On The Strip) sets the tone for the record, with its moody synthesizers, gritty drum machines and euphoric chorus. It’s a new era for the band and they want you to know this from the get-go.

          Recoil

          Liquid - 2023 Reissue

Recoil is the musical project of former Depeche Mode member, Alan Wilder, and Mute are reissuing the project’s last three albums - ‘Liquid’, ‘subHuman’ and ‘Unsound Methods’.

Originally a solo venture for Alan’s more experimental work outside of Depeche, Recoil became his primary music project after he announced his departure from the band in 1995.

The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, Rosa Torras, Diamanda Galás, Nicole Blackman, Samantha Coerbell and others power Alan Wilder’s passionate yet unsettling Recoil album, ‘Liquid’.

Released in 2000, ‘Liquid’ possesses a hypnotic and deeply charged allure drawn from its intense tapestry of desire, fury and violence. An exceptional piece of work for self-reflection in the company of darker side yourself, the record is intended drill holes into your psyche in a genuinely unhinged way.

“‘Liquid’ is a concept album that serves as a look into the mind of a warped and jaded man whose life is flashing in front of his eyes.” - AllMusic

“Meticulous musical sculpting and a filmic sense of creepiness combine to form an intensely dramatic album” - Sputnik Music

            Gregory Porter

Liquid Spirit - 10th Anniversary Edition

After two solid albums on Motema, both of which earned GRAMMY nominations, Gregory Porter made his Blue Note debut with Liquid Spirit in 2013. Recommencing with the water analogy that characterized his debut disc, Porter saw Liquid Spirit as a logical progression in his burgeoning discography as it touched on some of the same themes, particularly the highs and lows of romance, his childhood, and socio-political observations. The strength of Liquid Spirit lies in Porter's songs, based upon personal experiences with a relatable and emotional immediacy. Even more, his hooky melodies penetrate instantly.

Hailed by public and critics alike, Liquid Spirit won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2014. Platinum in the UK and Germany, gold in France, the Netherlands and Austria, the album has sold over a million copies worldwide.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the album, Blue Note presents a special vinyl edition bringing together the original album on 2LP and a disc of bonus tracks and remixes, with 5 tracks available on vinyl for the first time.

              Water Machine

              Raw Liquid Power

Water Machine is an office romance between Hando Morice (they/them), Flore de Hoog (she/her), Jimmy Gage (he/him) and Goda Ilgauskaitė (she/her). An unassuming supergroup formed out of Glasgow institutions including Goth GF, Passion Pusher, Brenda and Soursob, their sound careens between punk, country and alt-rock underpinned by the unique quality they call “Raw Liquid Power”.

Following last year’s self-titled demo tape on Gold Mold Records, and fresh off of shows with the likes of Holiday Ghosts, The Cool Greenhouse and The Orielles, as well as a rollicking Viagra Boys afterparty, the four-piece  release their highly-anticipated first studio effort ‘Raw Liquid Power’ on Upset The Rhythm.

The EP opens with a menacing, modulating synth melody. Gage’s guitar enters with a mighty bend before breaking into the chugging rhythm of ‘Water Machine Pt. 2’. This timely reminder to refill your water bottle - “don’t be late, hydrate!” less a wellness mantra than a threat - builds to a spacey outro with flashes of the art-punk weirdness of Suburban Lawns. ‘Stilettos’ marches on indignantly with a spiky riff punctuated by Ilgauskaitė’s cowbells. Staccato talk-singing tells a playful tale of stray cats following you home, but belies a darker subtext as the breakdown gives way to paranoid duelling guitars evoking The Fire Engines.

The anti-anthem ‘At the Drive In’ skewers joyless DIY crowds, reminiscent of much-missed Glasgow punks Breakfast Muff. Water Machine’s irrepressible sincerity can’t help but shine through in the final moments though, as jibes about “late night trade potential” give way to plaintive vocal harmonies. Morice tears public transport a new one on closer ‘Bussy’, a First Bus diss track bemoaning precarious employment amidst crumbling infrastructure. “That’s why I’m not on time!” they roar over de Hoog’s frantic, pounding bass, bringing the record to a skidding, screeching halt.

                LIFE

                North East Coastal Town

LIFE are anchored by their hometown; the geography, history and community has always been the inspiration behind their creativity and on their third LP, North East Coastal Town, the band pay homage to Hull and its folk. North East Coastal Town is mature; it finds the band at the height of their powers as they carve-up a wide-screen, brooding body of work that is drenched in a sense of belonging and reflection but still impressively maintains their trademark swagger and ear for pop sensibilities and guitar hooks.

“Hull and the surrounding area runs through our DNA and has shaped us, weathered us, empowered us, embraced us and made us feel accepted.

North East Coastal Town is our love letter to the city. The album is an ode to kinship and relationship with its musical and lyrical spine picking out themes of love, desire, beauty, horror, chaos, pride and most importantly the sense of belonging.

Upon writing and recording this album it was important to us that this sense of belonging was also reflected in the album’s craft and therefore we used locally based studios, equipment, gear, and the community around us to establish what it means to belong in a North East Coastal Town.”

When the pandemic gripped the world in March 2020, LIFE were in the midst of promoting their acclaimed second album – A Picture Of Good Health (Sept 2019); they had just completed an arena support tour with Kaiser Chiefs in the UK, a triumphant main stage appearance at Rockaway Beach and flown to New York for New Colossus Festival ahead of a packed SXSW and a US tour with IDLES. They scrambled home on the last plane back from New York on 17th March.

The album was BBC 6 Music’s Album Of The Day, BBC Radio 1’s Album Of The Weekend and was one of BBC 6Music's Albums of The Year; all four singles from the album were play-listed at 6Music, and the band were nominated for two AIM Awards 2020 - Best Live Act and Best (Difficult) Second Album and they played major UK festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading Festival and many more.

They began rebuilding with ‘Friends Without Names’ – the shapeshifting first glimpse from the album – which was added to the A-List at BBC 6Music, and was recorded in the dead of night and hums with a dark, brooding and passionate atmosphere.

“Friends Without Names is the anchor and blueprint for our next record. In a remote part of Eastern England, close to the river Humber, we performed this track as if we were in trance; vibrating in a constant musical crescendo. Our aim was to push ourselves and harness differing time zones whilst giving in to the moments of beauty, horror, love and chaos depicted by the song’s lyrics.” (Mez Green, vocals)

                  Sister Cookie

                  In The Blue Corner

Included in Craig Charles’ Funk and Soul ‘Ones to Watch 2022’ list. From London via Lagos, charismatic chanteuse Sister Cookie will take you on an eclectic excursion into the roots & fruits of black music. Old sounds, new tricks. Sensuous, seductive and moody. As well as possessing a distinctive voice that's tender and sweet when it needs to be, she’s a composer and self-taught pianist who writes honest and raw songs about pain, heartbreak, suffering - all that bad (meaning-good) stuff.

Craig Charles is a big supporter on BBC 6 Music and has played current single ‘Ain’t No Good (But It’s Good Enough For Me)’ several times. Steve Lamacq and Lauren Laverne have also given the track multiple plays. The track has also been playlisted at Jazz FM.

                    Noon Garden

                    Beulah Spa

Noon Garden is an exotic psych-pop odyssey from one of the founding members of Flamingods. Drawing on worldly sounds from the likes of Francis Bebey and Dur Dur Band to Shintaro Sakamoto, tearing up the sonic rule book and conjuring up a distant land where you find yourself cutting loose to grooves that meander their way through a wide spectrum of African disco, funk, exotica and psychedelia. Noon Garden has received support from the likes of Clash and The Line Of Best Fit and recent single Decca Divine was playlisted on Amazing Radio. The track also picked up love at DSP playlists including Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds: Indie’ and Apple’s ‘New in Alternative’. British born with Nigerian & Jamaican heritage, Prest spent his childhood living in Bahrain surrounded by people, like himself, who were all living on an island away from their homeland. Seeing the world from a young age and the experience of 10 years of globe-trotting touring with Flamingods are imprinted on his new project and have been a huge influence on shaping Noon Garden’s tropical adventurism. As a talented multi-instrumentalist Charles has written, self-produced and played all the parts on the single himself.

Noon Garden says of the album: "This debut was an experiment to get to know myself better. Taken from the name of an area not too far from my family home in Norwood south London, the literal words ‘Beulah Spa’ conjured up imagery of being a place to contemplate in warmth and complete tranquility. Writing music is a therapeutic process for me and it’s taken about eight years on and off to finish this album by myself, to try understand what it was exactly that I wanted to say lyrically and explore sonically. The album’s lyrics have shape-shifted so much with time but they take a curious look at the human experience; in my case growing up and soaking up a lot of cultures from an early age in the Middle East, the UK and briefly in Singapore. It’s a reflection on what’s past and what’s yet to come, my connection with others over the years and how that inevitably shapes your outlook on what’s around you. All of this told through the lens of psychedelia which has always given me a sense of possibility. Beulah Spa is the first marker of where I’ve gotten to so far in my life, channeling it all into a musical odyssey that lays the foundation for a lot more to come.”

                      Valeras

                      Tell Me Now EP

"We can already see that this band has a lot to offer the world and we haven’t seen the half of yet” MTV.

"Watch this lot because they're going all the way" Spindle Magazine.

This new material marks an expansion of the duo’s dynamics, which represents another musical leap forward for the band, adding new textures and further honing a sound that has been theirs since their inception. In the process of embracing this evolution, the band enlisted the help of award-winning songwriter and producer, Tarek Musa (of Spring King / Dead Nature) as well as bringing in Claudius Mittendorf (Weezer, Parquet Courts, LIFE) for mixing duties. From the hook-heavy lead single “Rita”, a song about “a hard-working woman who defies the negative surroundings that try to stop her from doing what she is truly passionate about.” Through to alt-pop anthem “Let Me Go”, and darker, psych-inflected “Change Your Mind”, the band’s new material is simultaneously more cutting, energetic and melodically encapsulating than anything else they have released to-date.

Tracks from ‘Tell Me Now’ have been heavily supported by BBC Introducing and have received plays on Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music including support from Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson. About their EP, VALERAS say: ‘This EP is the proudest VALERAS moment for the both of us. It’s made up of the first songs we wrote together as a duo in which we explored a dynamic we hadn’t before due to having a different line-up of members of the band in the past. This body of work marks a moment of growth for us as a musicians and individuals, and represents our ability to be able to co-write music that came so naturally that means so much to us. The songs were also co-written and produced by Tarek Musa, a musical hero of ours and great friend who we are so proud to say we worked beside.’

                        Okay Kaya

                        Watch This Liquid Pour Itself

In Okay Kaya songs, her world looks a lot like ours — Netflix, jetlag, vegan peanut butter and chocolate ice cream, lonely bowls of ramen, diet trends. But unlike ours, each of these vibrates and shimmers with deeper, darker meaning, with existential dread and desire for understanding. Through Norwegian-raised New Yorker Kaya’s dreamy soft-focus lens, the language of Twitter memes becomes modernist poetry as her breathy contralto voice sings lines like, “If you don’t love me at my guttural sound, you don’t deserve me at my guttural sound.” This is Sade for nihilists. On the opening track of her new record she sings, “I used to fight the feeling, always let it win.” As she transforms these feelings, defeats, and victories into songs, the lyrics often involve pools of sweat, oceans, and other forms of wetness. But Okay Kaya’s world is not one of renewal and rebirth—it’s not water at all, actually. “It’s more like bile,” Kaya says, “It’s what comes out in the purge.” In these songs, Kaya swims through her melancholy and anxiety— not as a way of cleansing herself, but as an understanding of their depths

                          Boody & Le1F

                          Liquid EP

Please welcome New York’s finest gems Boody & LE1F - our most recent joint of the BNR-Crew. Both producers, beatmakers, rapper and vocalist, two multitalents all in all. After his murky debut mixtape “Dark York“, LE1F's now hooking up with his long friend Boody to present their first release “Liquid“ EP on Boysnoize Records.

The record opens with "Jellyfish" - deadly, deep kicks sphered by drippy ice rinks. Brilliant balance between low-kicks and driving sirens unleashing the tracks unique shapings. “Buoy“ swipes away into a howling, cryptical and moody underwater action - closing gates, chirping birds and vanishing claps building a dark cavernous tension. As the subs shift from high to low, Boody & LE1F blesse the track with whispered vocals giving everything vogueish breeze. Next “Soda“ chops up the classic “The Ha Dance“ of Masters at Work into a kunty juke-ballroom mix. Furious “Ha Samples“ winding trough the track as minimalistic footwerk kicks and aqua drops joining the game. LE1F demonstrates his excellent rap skills here and shows you how to run this catwalk! With it's UK Funky rooted percussion and dominant basslines, the New York collaboration takes it to another level with “Sweet Tea“ while Khalif's stargazing performance glides across the track. Following is Cedaa's remix of “Sweet tea“. He loops LE1F's strongest lines “Damn Mama put it down this is way too hot for me!“ and permeating hollow pitched “Oh!“ in the back. His hydraulic mix pumps the original to a one of a kind club monster.

The EP closes with East Coasts Ballroom beats remix from MikeQ and Divoli S'vere of “Soda“. Together they reconstruct the original to a deadly vogue anthem and bringing the taste of the New Jersey ballroom underground to those who are “in the know“.

As 12“ Exclusive-Track "Born Underwater" will start the EP - a mesmerising booty shaking composition delivered by nobody else than Boody & LE1F.
