MESS - 2024 Reissue

Originally released in 2014, 'MESS' was the sound of Liars not only facing their fears but also chewing them up and spitting them back out in all their technicolor glory. Written and recorded by Angus Andrew and Aaron Hemphill, produced by Angus and mixed by Timothy "Q" Wiles, this record was less concerned with place compared to previous albums, and saw the band back in their own studio in LA.

Angus explained at the time of release, "We go from one extreme to the other. Working on the last record was really doubtful and paranoid, and that's fine, but it just meant that when work started on this one, it was the exact opposite. It was way more instinctual, fun, and confident.”

    Young Liars - Vinyl Reissue

Young Liars is the first major release by the New York City band TV on the Radio. Released in 2003 on Touch & Go Records, the EP helped establish the band's distinctive blending of electronica, doo wop, post-rock, and avant-garde styles. The release featured the single "Staring at the Sun," which would later be remixed and reissued in their full-length album Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes. It contains an a cappella version of "Mr. Grieves," which was originally a rock song by Pixies, from the album Doolittle.

      WIXIW - 2023 Reissue

WIXIW is the next album to be released in the Liars’ recycled coloured vinyl reissue series.

Initially released in 2012, WIXIW was Liars’ sixth full-length album as a band (Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross). Includes the hit ‘No.1 Against the Rush’, with the emotional video by Todd Cole. WIXIW somehow provided a summation of Liars’ work preceding the record, whilst also providing a complete break from anything that had been heard from the band. Recorded in L.A., the album was self-produced by the band, with additional production from Mute’s Daniel Miller and mixing by Tom Biller. It illustrated an ambiguous, fragile in-between state for Liars, being considered as both their most accessible and most challenging album.

        Sisterworld - 2023 Reissue

Originally released in 2010, Sisterworld is Liars fifth studio album. It was their first record to be recorded in the US since 2004’s They Were Wrong, So We Drowned and was created by Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross, along with Tom Biller who is known for working with the likes of Fiona Apple, Elliot Smith, Silversun Pickups and many more. The dynamic rock album took inspiration from fringe characters lured to LA and the resulting subcultures and alternate spaces that they generate, exploring the underground support systems created to deal with loss of self to society.

          Liars - 2023 Reissue

Liars fourth album is next in the band’s recycled coloured vinyl reissue series. Originally released in 2007 and recorded on the heels of 2006’s ‘Drum's Not Dead’ somewhere between LA and Berlin, the album marked another bold transition for the band.

They took a more practical approach for this album, one based on traditional song structures and instrument usage, with Angus explaining at the time of release that “I’d never felt like a songwriter ‘til this album.”

            Drum's Not Dead - 2022 Reissue

‘Drum’s Not Dead’ is the next instalment of the Liars’ reissue series, where every two months an album from the back catalogue is being released on recycled coloured vinyl.

Originally released in 2006, ‘Drum’s Not Dead’ is Liars’ third album, following up 2004’s ‘They Were Wrong, So We Drowned’. Once again, the album shattered all past reference points and preconceptions of Liars. Partly inspired by a relocation from New York to Berlin, the album finds Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross taking another seismic step forward, switching continents and seizing new musical territory.

The album’s title and several track names refer to two fictional characters: Drum and Mount Heart Attack. For the band they are like Yin and Yang, each a state of being. Drum is assertive and productive, the spirit of creative confidence. With two drum kits integral to many of these percussive, propulsive, highly rhythmic convulsions, Drum came to be acknowledged as a fourth member of the band. Conversely, Mount Heart Attack is the reaction to Drum’s action, the embodiment of stress and self-doubt. Both became key elements in the creative process.

“Liars have had the last laugh: ‘Drum’s Not Dead’ is a majestic victory lap, and on all levels, a total f**king triumph.” - Pitchfork

“Liars have achieved a captivating level of sonic brilliance that deserves to be listened as an entity and not in scant sessions of personal musical ambivalence.” - Treble

“Liars have delivered just what you need... even if you don't realize it yet.” - Tiny Mix Tapes

They Were Wrong, So We Drowned - 2022 Reissue

They Were Wrong, So We Drowned is the new instalment from the Liars’ reissue series, where every two months an album from the back catalogue is being released on recycled coloured vinyl.

Originally released in 2004, Liars’ second album scrutinises pagen worship rituals in punkflore fashion with its title alluding to the horrors and injustices of witch-hunts conducted throughout history. Each song is a page from a story that frontman Angus Andrews crafted from his in-depth look into fairy tales and folklore, illustrating a conflict between witches and a scared Christians village. They Were Wrong, So We Drowned was a creative transition and saw the band severing their ties with a scene they inaugurated on their debut album, and had decidedly, outgrown by the second.

“This isn’t yesterday’s post-punk today…this isn’t yesterday’s anything. They Were Wrong is disorienting, challenging, and highly experimental.” — MAGNET

"They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top" is the first instalment of the new Liars reissue series, where every two months an album from the back catalogue will be released on recycled coloured vinyl.

The campaign kicks off with Liars’ debut album, originally released in 2001 and recorded over two days in Brooklyn, New York with producer Steve Revitte (The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion & Beastie Boys). At the time of release Liars were Melbourne born Angus Andrew (vocals & pedals), Aaron Hemphill from LA (guitar & drum machine) and Nebraskians Pat Nature (bass & synthbox) and drummer Ron Albertson.

                  The Apple Drop

The Apple Drop is the 10th studio album from Liars. Recorded in Australia with avant-garde jazz drummer Laurence Pike and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell, mixing their raw, organic live instrumentation with Angus’s solo tinkering at the computer, resulting in an album that blurs boundaries between the archetypal band structure and experimental electronics. The album feels distinctly and recognisably Liars, yet also fresh and singular. Rich textures overlap with engulfing ambience, before giving way to eruptive blasts of noise, crackling electronics and thrashing drums. Includes the single ’Sekwar’.

                    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Having drifted between bonkers noise and galloping avant mayhem, it's a delight to hear Liars honing their sound down to a pitch-perfect mix of more outsider math rock with the streamlined, jagged groove giving definition to proceedings. Endlessly listenable, and constantly inventive grooves.

The series gets its name from the epic Less Artists More Condos concerts that the late ARIEL PANERO threw in New York, showcasing amazing bands in some strange and unique venues. Ariel’s driving force was a desire to get the bands he believed in the recognition he felt they deserved. This series simply tries to honor that idea. 1/1: Original Soundtrack To The Film

Liars announce the release of their first original soundtrack - ‘1/1’.

‘1/1’ is the soundtrack to Jeremy Phillips’ directorial debut, due to be released in July 2018. Starring Lindsey Shaw (‘Pretty Little Liars’), Judd Nelson (‘Breakfast Club’, ‘St Elmo’s Fire’) and Dendrie Taylor (‘Star Trek Generations’, ‘Twins’), the film submerges the viewer into the mind of Lissa, a 20-year-old girl in rural Pennsylvania and her struggles with sex, drugs, love and loss. Liars have created an electronic soundtrack that reflects the film’s use of mixed media abstractions and multi-film formats, which undoubtedly stands up as an album in its own right.

                      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Liars form a strong and driven backing to Philips's first outing with their nuanced and textured touch, with clicking, syncopated percussion, shimmering ambience and haunting shards of reversed guitars and tenderly plucked acoustics. Every bit the standalone piece, and perfectly fitted to the film as well. Great stuff.

                      TFCF: 420 Estuary Angler Edition

Liars have, as a matter of course, sounded radically different with each album, pursuing new concepts and occupying diverse mindsets. On this, Liars’ eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory.

The album’s reinvention of the Liars paradigm - blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility - is evidence that Angus’ creative energies remain as healthy as ever, even given the upheaval within the group.

‘TFCF’ was written and recorded by Liars (Angus Andrew). Butchy Fuego, who performed live with Liars following Julian Gross’ departure in 2014, plays drums on three tracks.

Following an amicable parting of ways with Aaron Hemphill, Liars is now Angus Andrew, who decamped to his native Australia, specifically to a remote part of the Australian bush, to create an album unlike any Liars had attempted before.

Liars’ career has seen the band rattle through pigeonholes in an attempt to avoid them all together: brittle yet taught punk funk; liminal no wave; ecstatic noise-pop; 21st-Century garage rock; post millennial post rock; delicate electronics; reaching here, where Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross now find themselves maybe not quite at ease with the world but staring it straight in the eye while showing their teeth.

The single comes backed with remixes by Factory Floor, Truss and young Melbourne collective Nest Of Teens plus a radio mix from Mute’s Daniel Miller.

                          Drum's Not Dead

"Drum's Not Dead", the band's third album and the follow up to 2004's "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned" was partly inspired by a relocation from New York to Berlin. It finds Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross taking another seismic step forward, switching continents and seizing new musical territory. It's also their finest and fullest album to date, shredding all past reference points. Both formats come loaded with its own cinematic sister project: a DVD with three film versions of the album, "Drum's Not Bread" (directed by Julian Gross), "The Helix Aspersa" (directed by Angus Andrew) and "By Your Side" (by award-winning filmmaker Markus Wambsganss). Each film comprises of videos for each of the tracks on the album: that's 36 videos in total. From backstage travelogues to surreal animation and mini sci-fi epics, Liars document the process of recording, touring, then visually reinventing each track. It's an ambitious and groundbreaking expansion of the album format, throwing down the gauntlet for other creatively ambitious bands to follow suit.
