KOMPAKT EXTRA

The year could not be complete without having a new release from the man behind the hat - KÖLSCH. He returns to Speicher following a phenomenal year of touring that took his DJing from the top of the Eifel Tower to the main stage of Tomorrowland. For "Speicher 106", he takes an unexpected turn with "Emoticon", weaving metallic percussion and woody found sounds into an irresistible off kilter rhythm (think Powder or Don't DJ), then letting loose with a buzzing and bruising bassline. The result is an unconventionally unique groove odyssey with a sublime cinematic breakdown for the sophisticated dancers out there. On the flip,"Little Death" is anything but tragic or small. A choir chant explodes atop an enchanting minimal house beat which elevates over time to an almighty apex that we have learned to love and rely on from KÖLSCH.

Compact Extra continue to be a formidable force across the global dancefloor, drafting in Brazil born / Barcelona based ANNA for the second time this year. If you went out to a club in 2018 you undoubtedly heard "Hidden Beauties" while behind the decks she touched countless people with her sincere and unabashed passion for techno and DJing.

Speicher105 presents a different side of ANNA - her remarkable production skills continue to shine as she looks more inward with "Remembrance" a deep pluming, rotary techno epic. Depth charge bass, twinkling keys and concentric, slightly broken beat combine to usher in waves of serenity and power. There's an alt version to get stuck into n'all, adding a more straight up 4/4 beat to proceedings and in turn seeing it added to the majority of the world's best techno DJs record bags.

Bonus track "Where I Am Only A Dream" sees a juddering acid line supplemented with crisp hats and swirling noise, another one that'll find most pleasure when mixed at high velocity alongside other richly textured techno records. I could defo see Ben Sims or Surgeon playing this!

T.Raumschmiere / Reinhard Voigt

Speicher 104

Kompakt celebrate 25 years at the forefront of electronic music with a truly special release. T. Raumschmiere's "Augen Zu" spearheads the charge of so-called 'umpa' tekno - a carnival pleasing stomp bolstered with dark electro vox and eerie keys. The octave bass grinds against our nether regions as the drums march on, making for a carnal and provocative experience. Reinhard Voigt drops "Drei Millionen Kolsch" and more cerebral and introverted affair but nonetheless stadium friendly. Big metallic washes and echo-drenches sweeps characterize this piece, as gurgling acid bass spits and slurps underneath.

Incepted just three years after the beginning of the Kompakt venture in 2001, sister label Speicher sees its 102nd installment in the catalogue (yet the first Speicher to feature three whole tracks....). Fronted by an eclectic squad of producers triangulating from all corners of the globe but united by their boundless science of the groove. Longtime friends turned studio companions, Enzo Elia (of Balearic Gabba Soundsystem fame) and Musumeci join forces for the first time on the unfaltering late night hip-swayer, "Gothic Safari"; kicking things off with a super crisp, technoid offering of deep dancefloor epicness à la Âme. The vibe then swerves into further savannah-friendly audio territories with unheard French newcomer La Marine who, like his glorious predecessor Oxi operates out of the mountain-ringed city of Grenoble, here popping up with an off-axis downtempo electro hybrid of unknown provenance named "Flash".
Looping the loop with maximal tension and mind-piercing depth, rising Bolivian duo Animal Print serve up the aptly named Badalamenti-esque roller "The Last Night Of Laura Palmer" - a track that won’t fail at recalling the ‘Twin Peaks’ aficionados the bizarro ambiences of Lynch's acclaimed TV show all the while following a rather straightforward, frontally club-ready sense of style, resulting in a fine balance between down-to-earth pragmatism and unbridled reverie.
