X-Press 2 Feat. Kele Okereke

Phasing You Out (David Holmes Remix)

Hot on the heels of their fifth fantastic LP ‘Thee’ - their first for 25 years and debut for Acid Jazz - house stalwarts X-Press 2 have enlisted David Holmes to remix album track ‘Phasing You Out’.

The original version of ‘Phasing You Out’ features Kele Okereke from Bloc Party and sits at the heart of the new album which again showed that Rocky and Diesel remain dedicated to proper house music.

David Holmes has had a 25-plus year career in music that has seen him release several vital albums and remix artists like Andrew Weatherall, Primal Scream and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, hold down a cult NTS radio show and turn out a seminal mix for Late Night Tales.

David Holmes brings plenty of signature musicality to what is a standout remix - his version of ‘Phasing You Out’ is an intense one that unfolds over eight minutes of percussive density, dusty drum work and careful treatment of the original vocal. The whole arrangement is lavishly decorated with wispy pads and glassy sound effects, police sirens and a rhythmic intensity that never lets up and will work any floor into a frenzy.

This is Kele’s fourth solo record and, following 2017’s largely acoustic Fatherland (released under his full name and featuring a duet with Olly Alexander from Years and Years), marks something of a return to the adrenalised electronics of his previous two solo records, Trick (2014) and The Boxer (2010), whilst broadening the sonic palette by bringing in elements of his work with Bloc Party and a litany of other influences and ideas. As an artist, Kele Okereke has never stood still, relentlessly seeking new ways in which to present his luminous songs. Whilst sonically markedly different from Fatherland, lyrically 2042 picks up a thread from that record whereby Kele’s life experiences and relationships suffuse the album with some of his most personal lyrics yet.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Kele is back! This time we get the rhythmic, soulful electronics and melodic sensibilities we've enjoyed from his previous solo albums, but this time imbued with an urgency and political drive that we've learnt to expect in such troubling times. This manifests in a turn towards harder rhythms and gritty momentum. A superb outing once again.

With his sterling solo effort, "The Boxer", Kele swapped out the angular guitars and anthemic choruses of Bloc Party and headed straight to the dancefloor, producing a shimmering triumph of an album which melded influences as disparate and surprising as two-step, Italo-house and old school garage with seamless ease.

"Trick", his sophomore record, sees Kele travelling further down the rabbit hole, but making something darker and more sensual in the process. This time round, proceedings take on a distinctly libidinous, downcast feel, the air thick with possibility and tension.

"Trick" is a different, sleeker beast than "The Boxer", with a newfound emphasis on Okereke's soulful vocals, which grew and changed during the course of recording the album in London and New York. Framing Okereke's intensely personal songwriting within the context of dance culture, "Trick" is a record which boldly stands at the crossroads of club history, old school soul and modern electronic R&B, with a distinctively British twist.
