JAHTARI

A killer fusion of bass, poetry and social consciousness from the King Midas Sound vocalist.

Roger Robinson is one of the most versatile voices in the dub poetry scene today, seamlessly blending the power of the written word with the raw energy of the soundsystem.

Teaming up once again with Dub wizard Disrupt to conclude an album trilogy that began with “Dis Side Ah Town” and “Dog Heart City“, Robinson pulls a wide range of riddims straight from the Jahtari vaults to create “Heavy Vibes“, a killer fusion of bass, poetry, and social consciousness.

With a voice oscillating between soulful falsetto and deep poetry thunder Robinson’s verses hit as hard as the bass, challenging the listener to confront uncomfortable truths, while Disrupt’s richly textured, dub-heavy production ensures the music moves both body and mind. You’ll find yourself dancing, but more importantly, you’ll find yourself thinking.

Coming with stunning cover art by Kiki Hitomi and featuring deadly riddims by Tapes, Naram, Jura Soundsystem, Maffi and Bo Marley, “Heavy Vibes” balances the weight of oppression with a glimmer of hope – the belief that change is possible, that the beat goes on, and that through solidarity and art, new futures can be forged.

Disrupt

Arcade Addict / Proper Tings

Two lost & found lofi nuggets from the Jahtari vault, appearing on 7" floppy disc for the very first time. "Arcade Addict" is the original dub cut of Mikey Murka's "Sensi Addict", a version of the sweet Ujama classic that came out as a Jahtari Net-7" in 2006. Sprinkled with field recordings from early 80s arcade halls (done by kids with a walkman) this little oddity never made it to vinyl until now. "Proper Tings" on B is taken from a home made video from 2012, originally made to show the capabilities of a DIY Synth project using a Commodore C64 home computer sound chip, the growly SID synth.

Sounds are made from scratch, sequenced out on a MPC - and the ensuing dub jam turned out to be a lucky shot, eventually shaping up as Paul St. Hilaire's "Who Goes There". There's a raw, beautiful 8bit magic to this Dub, finally making it to wax for the first time.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: A unique, inspiring, and singular movement in modern digi-dub and C64-informed electronics, the Jahtari label is truly one of a kind; with a vast catalogue to back up its message. One of the original contributors and poster boys of the label Disrupt comes through with a truly foundation shaking slice of 8-bit, arcadian digi-dub.

Proper Tings

Experimental downbeat Afro-futurism album by dub poetry free spirit Jasmine Tutum, with production by OG Jahtari lads Disrupt and Rootah as The Other Others, oscillating between spaced out soundscapes, floaty hoovers and heavy movers.

Tokyo-born, grown up in Jamaica and living in Germany (with various stops in-between) Jasmine’s wild biography translates into sonic territory with this LP, drawing inspiration from Grace Jones and Theo Parrish, newworldaquarium and Roger Robinson alike.

Bo Marley

Masters Of The Universe

After their undying classic album from 2007, Bo Marley are finally back with a vengeance - and a massive ghettoblaster! Always ready to rock your backyard, street corner or..er..local super market (as done in a legendary surprise attack last year in Leipzig), the Harlev homeboys once again power up their Chariot Of Fire and drop a floor-devastating tape reel here that effortlessly rolls up electrifying beats, short-wired robo-magic and a voltage drenched low-rider bass into one big and long masterpiece. The patented Bo space-lyrics in German/Danish warp mode are again dealing with the big timeless themes of our age: rocking it on stage ("Wir Setzt Den Trend"), rolling along with the Bo Mobile ("Rollen Vorbei"), the joys of driving a scooter ("Mofa Fahren") and Robot Cars ('with volt power - yeah!'). Kaptain Dreck joins the posse for one tune here, with a fistful of rhymes that would even impress He-Man himself. With Fe-tape for Xtra Bass! Be quick - ultra-limited edition. Skeletor need not apply.
