Hardy's Jet Band / Orchestra Klaus Wuesthoff / Jan Troysen Band / Orchestra Gary Pacific

      Blue Butterfly

Behold! Yes, Blue Butterfly, one of the absolute stunners on the revered Selected Sound label is finally available for all the beat-heads. Heavyweight library funk with a psychedelic touch, the super in-demand Blue Butterfly from *deep breath* Hardy's Jet Band, Orchestra Klaus Wuesthoff, Jan Troysen Band and Orchestra Gary Pacific - was originally released in 1971. Incredibly ahead of its time, it's been rare and sought-after for decades.

For many aficionados, this is the best Selected Sound release. Loaded with fuzzy wah-wah guitar, deep flute-lines atop soulful psych-rock breakbeats and huge organ action, its uncompromising funk will blow you away. Sampled for many hip hop beats and dropped by well known rare groove DJs around the world, one jewel in particular from this glorious German vault needs little introduction. The intro to Orchestra Gary Pacific's mesmeric "Soft Wind" rides the illest, crispest drum break you've perhaps never heard - like, the drum break to end them all - alongside a smooth, deep bass line from the heavens. It featured notoriously on the beloved Dusty Fingers comps of the 90s and was brilliantly sampled by Pacewon for his eternal "Sunroof Top". Just listen and be dazzled.

Beyond this mini-masterpiece, the other killer tracks offer brilliance in abundance. Hardy's Jet Band take control of the full A side, and it's full of dynamic psych-funk bombs. Hard, "big city" industrial groovers. In particular, the initial one-two of "Sorry, Doc!" and "Wind It Up" provide thrilling funky-blues rock instrumentals showcasing relentless guitars, flutes, sax and organ, the latter containing gorgeous, hypnotic breakdowns; these tracks just slay. The title track, "Blue Butterfly" is a real deep strut of a track with fantastic soloing from guitar and flute over crisp drums whilst the highway banger "What You Call To Be Free" certainly sounds a lot like unbridled, rhythmical liberty.

On the flip, the ghost-riding "Lady In Space" is a string-drenched acid-western foxtrot. Yep. “Pop Happening” by Jan Troysen Band is a heavy, druggy psych-fuzz organ groover whilst their slow beat-organ-flute gem "A Blue Message" is a gorgeous psych floater conjuring deeply strange frontier lands. Preceding their monster "Soft Wind", the soulful, uptempo groover “Ghetto Gap” by Orchestra Gary Pacific contains solo piano and flute whilst closing out the set is the free-and-easy samba beat of "So Far".

Founded in the late 60s by German composer and musician Klaus Netzle (who recorded under the alias Claude Larson for Sonoton) Selected Sound began as a production music company specialising in jazz, orchestral and electronic recordings. You can’t miss those early LPs in their iconic glossy metallic copper sleeves with minimal German typography. Serious, classy stuff.

The audio for Blue Butterfly has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis whilst Richard Robinson has handled reproducing the glossy metallic (iconic) original Selected Sound sleeve. Essential.

The album, which features the highlights ‘Quiet Americans’ and ‘Only Child’, was produced by Danny Reisch at studios in Austin and Los Angeles and mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound.

This is definitely Shearwater’s biggest and loudest record - it’s easy to imagine these songs roaring from the stage - but it’s also their most detailed and intricate one. Front man Jonathan Meiburg and producer / engineer Reisch spent two years crafting ‘Jet Plane And Oxbow’ with help from drummer Cully Symington, longtime Shearwater associates Howard Draper and Lucas Oswald and tourmates Jesca Hoop, Abram Shook and Jenn Wasner.

This time the band’s secret weapon is film composer and percussionist Brian Reitzell, whose soundtracks include ‘The Virgin Suicides’, ‘Lost In Translation’, ‘The Bling Ring’, and ‘30 Days Of Night’. Reitzell’s arsenal of strange instruments emphasizes ‘Jet Plane And Oxbow’’s cinematic depth and scope and reflects the band’s choice to anchor the record in the era when digital technology was just beginning to transform the world of recorded music. In Shearwater’s hands this doesn’t feel like nostalgia; the racing synths and hammered dulcimers of heart-pounding opener ‘Prime’ or the addled motorik of ‘Radio Silence’ sound more like a metaphor for our own bewildering moment.

        Alembic

        Shadow Tapes

‘For best results, listen with your eyes closed and stereo loud’ recommends the biography of the Devon-born Alembic, whose sound would have you believing that he spent his childhood growing up deep within the Congolese jungle. With his six track EP, Shadow Tapes, Alembic blends together head bopping hip-hop grooves and electronic hubbub which are rooted by African tribal percussion, mixed with a hint of South American funk. Tracks such as Freedom that exhibit shades of an early Bonobo, while Dundun and Faranuka only need vocals from David Byrne and Chuck D added to them before they feature on a N.A.S.A. album. Shadow Tapes is an enthralling myriad of sounds that oozes vibrancy on a splendid experimental musical voyage.

        TRACK LISTING

        1. Dundun
        2. Astro Bloom
        3. Faranuka

        Jet

        Shine On

Hanging out with the Gallagher brothers has definitely rubbed off on Jet, as this title track from their second album proves. "Shine On" is an anthemic rock ballad with Bealtes-ey guitars and a gospel choir backing.

          Jet

          Cold Hard Bitch

Fantastic full on, floor filling rock'n'roll from one of the kings of the genre!!

            Jet

            Rollover DJ

This anthemic rocker from Jet takes a side swipe at overhyped DJs.

              Jet

              Dirty Sweet EP

Debut UK release from this Australian band who're causing a bit of a stir at the moment. Good old fashioned 70s style rock with a heavy Rolling Stones influence.

                Jet Black Summer

                Ladder Of Divine Ascent

For fans of The Anniversary, Rival Schools, Death Cab For Cutie. Jet Black Summer have already done the groundwork for this debut album "Ladder of Divine Ascent", it presents a contrasting of styles (emo sensitive / heavy rocking) with often existential, yet equally optimistic lyrical themes and a raw energy few bands ever manage to capture on record.

                  Glider / Jet Johnson

Le Mal Ne Meurt Jamais / Le Jet

Limited edition split single from the Jonathon Whiskey label. Glider play a beautiful warm, atmospheric instrumental. Jet Johnson play a funkier groove full of strange bleeps, reminiscent of And The Native Hipsters (for those of you that are old enough to remember them!).
