Way Dynamic, the solo project of Melbourne’s Dylan Young, releases internationally 'Massive Shoe' – a third album that’s playful and understated, luminous and textured. Massive Shoe is minimalist folk-pop, art rock and baroque pop, produced and largely played by Young, who moonlights in Melbourne’s beloved Cool Sounds and Good Morning and has played drums with Snowy Band and Kankawa Nagarra.

It’s tempting to only compare these songs to those of yesteryear – Young’s falsetto, his ear for harmonies and the intricate arrangements all feel timeless. But there’s a sensibility, a turn of phrase, that feels deeply contemporary: it’s telling that Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield described 'Miffed It' as her “favourite song in a VERY long time”, and Katie, MJ Lenderman, This is Lorelei and Black Country New Road have all taken Way Dynamic on tour, while Sir Elton John said that he “just cannot stop listening” to 'Ibiza'. Young’s songs don’t shy away from sentiment, or equally from silliness: on any given song he might suggest a flight to space or earnestly lament a miscommunication. “Can we walk and talk as well?” he asks on “I Was the Dancer”, and we rush to accept the invitation.

Volume 3 of the Jazz Sessions is here and brings the original Acid Jazz star James Taylor into play, and on the 40th Anniversary of his solo career.

Formerly a member of the Prisoners, who split in 1986, he recorded his first single as the James Taylor Quartet - a take on Herbie Hancock’s ‘Blow Up’ - later that year for Acid Jazz-precursor Re-Elect The President, before working extensively with the label in the foundation of his lauded career and beyond. It is apt that the anniversary of that session is marked with James’ first release in a Trio format.

’The Truth’ sees him working with noted players Theo Carasco on drums and Orlando Flemming on upright bass, to recreate a sound influenced by the records that Les McCann, Hampton Hawes and Lonnie Liston Smith were making in the early ‘70s.

The sound world of the trio involves an extensive interaction with analogue electric keyboards, be it the Fender Rhodes - James lead instrument throughout - the Solina string synthesiser and Hammond Organ. The trio is joined by Aref Durvesh’s Tablas and on three tracks, vocals are added by gospel-trained singer Liz Jai.

The material includes takes on Vince Guaraldi’s ‘Lucy & Linus’ and ’Thus Sprach Zarathustra’, as well as the inspirational vocal title track and the cosmic jazz of 'Aref’s Space’.

A fitting continuation of James Taylor’s catalogue on Acid Jazz, as he returns to the label that started his career.

Illusive Bristolian beatmaker Claude Cooper returns with a visceral blast of psychedelic-hip-hop, enlisting IDLES frontman Joe Talbot and BEAK> bassist Billy Fuller for ‘Perfect Execution’, a limited edition 7" single in aid of War Child UK.

Claude Cooper has found a kindred spirit in Joe Talbot. The IDLES frontman has long worn his hip-hop influences as openly as his post-punk ones, and on ‘Perfect Execution’ that affinity finds its fullest expression yet. Cooper's raw, dissonant production collides with Talbot's breathless, confrontational lyricism in a track that draws its lineage from Public Enemy as readily as it does from Bristol's own bruised musical history.

The lyrics pull no punches. Talbot inhabits a landscape of public spectacle and private suffering, circling images of crowds, chains, hanging and the hollow comfort of slogans. The repeated refrain of “No pain no gain” hits differently when set against the track's subject matter, its bludgeoning repetition somewhere between protest chant and bitter irony.

Joe says, “It’s an honour to work with some beautiful Bristol heads on this track for Warchild. All is love”.

Coming on the heels of Jackpot Records' vinyl reissue of The Wild Magnolias' S/T debut LP, we proudly announce the band’s follow-up record, They Call Us Wild. Championed by critic Robert Christgau as creating “the most boisterous recorded party I know.”

The band released this funk masterpiece in 1975, but now with a psychedelic streak running deeply throughout it. While the first album (which was also the first commercially released record by a Mardi Gras Indian group) declared "Smoke Your Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right)", They Call Us Wild is a different type of "elevated" sonic celebration. Vocals echo and drip; saxophones and keyboards swing from each other’s arms, and the omnipresent multi-layered percussion, which The Wild Magnolias were known for, showcase why they continue to be one of the most sampled bands of all time (they have been sampled by everyone from Nas to Public Enemy to Jungle Brothers).

With producer Philippe Rault at the helm once again, he continued to capture the dense magic within the band, but on They Call Us Wild, they are taking a darker, more haunted approach with their music. The smokey interplay on songs like “Injuns, Here We Come”, with its jazzy piano/bass meltdown (courtesy of Erving Charles Jr. & Wilson Turbinton of the legendary New Orleans funk band The Gaturs), solidified them as a band rather than capturing a moment...even though the celebration in the studio is still going just as strong. The band also takes itself to new sonic territory, for instance, slowing things down with “Jumalaka Boom Boom,” with its sexy groove and spoken-word storytelling sections that rival the best of P-Funk.

Simply obliterating any conception of the Wipers as a mere punk band, Greg Sage released this follow-up to "Is This Real?" in 1981 - a sophisticated, overwhelming response to the evil times marked by the turn of the decade. Broken up into six long songs, "Youth of America" is a much colder, harrowing experience than the teen angst of their debut. Vocally, Sage comes off as sleep-deprived and forsaken, snarling not only at his own predicament but at the predicament of the entire world. The centerpiece of the album is the title track, a dire ten minutes of paranoia and angst that gave Sage the space to showcase his wildest, darkest playing yet. As bassist Brad Davidson and drummer Brad Naish hold the same hypnotic rhythm for the entire song, the guitar careens and swoops with such a frantic energy it seems as though it's the only thing keeping Sage alive in the maelstrom of sound. It's a fitting commentary that the exacting, post-punk legends Mission of Burma and squalling, noisy thugs The Melvins both saw fit to cover the track. Jackpot Records have kept to the high standards set by our previous reissues (The Wipers' "Is This Real?" and the self-titled Beauregarde LP), and "Youth of America" is pressed on high-quality vinyl at RTI and packaged in a sturdy, old-fashioned tip-on sleeve. The tracks have been mastered from original tapes by Greg Sage himself, and the cover is identical to the original sleeve as issued in 1981. When JIM’s debut album 'Love Makes Magic' was released in 2023, it marked the culmination of an experiment that began during the strange days of the pandemic. Cooped up in his studio, James Baron started tinkering with what would become a new musical project. The result was Vicious Charm’s first LP release.

Several tracks were overseen by veteran producer and musician Eddie Stevens (Moloko, Sia, Zero 7), who provided ideas, keyboards and guidance throughout the recording process.

Sadly, 'The Curious Case Of Existence' was completed in the shadow of the death of Crazy P vocalist Danielle Moore, whose passing in August 2024 continues to be deeply felt by everyone who knew her.

Her memory inevitably finds its way into the album’s closing track, 'Windmills', in which JIM recalls a road trip the pair took through the landscapes of Palm Springs and Las Vegas several years ago.

“I wanted to write something about her but I was struggling to find what it was I wanted to say... We had just driven past Palm Springs when Mary Lattimore’s version of ‘Wait For Now’ by Cinematic Orchestra came on, and it’s just harp and vocals and is absolutely jaw-dropping. It’s this long stretch, with windmills either side of the road, hundreds of them, and this red sky — we were both welling up. It was a real moment. I’d rather remember Dani in this positive way than any other.”

A recent signee to Chess Club Records, Jo Geller aka Jo From School, finds herself among the independent label’s pedigree of homegrown artists who have gone on to attain major success. Alumni such as Billie Marten, an artist long admired by Jo, as well as Wolf Alice, are just a couple of names who found their initial support through Chess Club.

At 22-years-old, Jo From School’s graceful, carefully crafted but devastatingly delivered songs hit with an air of maturity that lands far beyond her years. An embrace for spontaneity and imperfection gives her material its character; primarily as an artist focussed on doing things her own way.

Writing on the piano since the tender age of nine, Jo self-taught herself guitar as a teenager during lockdown, joining the illustrious Brit School: “I was the only musician in my world until I went to Brit School, then I was the worst musician there,” she says. “It gave me a kick. I went from thinking that it was cooler to not care about anything, to realising the more you cared, the cooler and more individual it made you.”

On June 29th, 2023, Jeremiah Chiu walked into the Vintage Synthesizer Museum (VSM) in Highland Park, Los Angeles, with no plan more specific than “let’s fire this stuff up and see what happens.” Exploring theVSM’s vast collection of classic, rare and staple synthesizers, he would sequence, trigger, and layer the machines together with help fromVSM founder/curator Lance Hill. Hill recalls: "Jeremiah arrived before the engineer showed up. We talked for maybe 5 minutes before he started programming a sound and sequence into the Gleeman Pentaphonic. By the time the engineer showed up, Jeremiah had built several other parts around the Gleeman that weren't synced by any Control method but sounded like they were just calling and responding to each other. They plugged the Tascam 388 into the patch bay, and hit record. Jeremiah played with it, and that was it. First piece written and recorded in under an hour. It felt natural, fun and free. And that's pretty much how the rest of the session went. Constant ecstatic motion. It was the funnest non-HipHop session I've ever worked on."

The resulting album – 'In Electric Time' - was recorded in just two days, and edited to completion in the two days following. It was captured fully analog by engineer Ben Lumsdaine, who contributes performances on a few tracks himself. Cooper Crain (of Bitchin Bajas) makes an appearance as well; but ultimately the collection is an intuitive expression of organic electronic Music conceptualized and created in-context by Chiu alone, as he calls on a lifetime of work in sound synthesis to paint a fulgent, refreshingly undercut sequence of cinematic sketches and in-process themes. In some ways, 'In Electric Time' reflects the directness of Raymond Scott’s electronic studio recordings — with sharp cuts and room chatter — and, in others, it conjures the in-the-Moment magic of Harmonia.

In August 2022, the late Australia-based, French born fourth-world music legend Ariel Kalma was invited to participate in BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction series of special collaborations.The program pairs artists who have not previously worked together to create new music cooperatively. Kalma was quick to suggest working with two musicians whom he had never met – International Anthem recording artists Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer, whose critically-acclaimed duo debut 'Recordings from the Åland Islands' had been released just a few months earlier. An invitation was sent to Chiu and Honer, which was received with great enthusiasm, as Chiu had long been a fan of Kalma’s work, even citing him as a major influence on his approach to electronic music composition.

The essential structure of the Late Junction collaboration was that the Artists would work together to create around twenty minutes of music.They began passing music back and forth, some that Kalma had started, and some that Honer & Chiu had started, with each adding to or editing the track before returning it to the other.The music would only go back and forth a few times before being finalized. After meeting their twenty minute goal for the program Kalma, Chiu and Honer agreed that they would continue to work together to try to push the Music further.The freshly minted trio felt like there was much more to be said and more work to be done.The Late Junction program was broadcast in September of 2022. Simultaneously, Kalma, Chiu and Honer began expanding upon the music they had started for the purpose of the broadcast, working diligently on the music for several months. Their collective approach to this work was born in improvisation and realized via collage-based editing.The end result brings several distinct musical moments — recorded sometimes decades apart — into conversation with one another, forming new narratives from building blocks of old ones.There are snippets of improvised playing from each musician, edited together with recordings that Kalma had made in the 70s at GRM, and even moments of audio notes — like Kalma explaining his ideas — that would make it into the final mixes.

This forgotten album is arguably one of the five best albums in the Cash discography. It is fueled by superb original Cash songs and well executed covers. It contains "See Ruby Fall" (co-written with Roy Orbison) and one of his best 70s hits, "Blistered." The lean, minimalist instrumentation of the Tennessee Three ensures the album with great rhythm, leaving Johnny Cash's voice as effective as ever. Neither a sequel nor a satellite to 'The Wild Hunt', The Tallest Man On Earth's EP, 'Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird', is a statement in its own right. While many post-LP EPs round up same-session tracks or studio experiments for diehard fans, these five austere folk songs were written on the road and recorded during a recent break from touring.Tthey're unmistakably Tallest, marked by the vulnerability in Kristian Matsson's croak of a voice, the strident complexity of his guitarwork, and his thoughtful, often fractured lyrics inspired, ostensibly, by his native sweden - specifically the mountainous region of Dalarna, northwest of Stockholm. And yet, despite the same elements, 'Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird' has a very different character from 'The Wild Hunt'. It's slightly darker, more wounded, muted, and meditative. The EP allows Matsson to explore one particular mood: a primary colour in his palette, a bluesy melancholy that defines and permeates every song here.

Freddie McGregor's Showcase album, released in 1981 and known in the UK as 'Lover's Rock Showcase Jamaica Style', marked a pivotal moment in the singer's career. Prior to this, McGregor had enjoyed only modest success, though his work, crafted with various producers, had consistently showcased a talented artist with an authentic voice. A major turning point came in 1979 when he teamed up with producer Winston "Niney" Holness to create the acclaimed 'Mr. McGregor' album which significantly boosted his profile. On this record Roots and romance are in perfect harmony as Niney's Dub magic meets McGregor's spin on classic soul, just as the title promises.

Known for his seminal post-punk bands Nocturnal Projections and This Kind of Punishment as well as his equally influential solo records such as 'The Last Great Challenge in a Dull World', 'Electricity', 'Elevator Madness', and 'Closed Circuit', Jefferies has been one of the towers of the New Zealand underground music community since the early 1980s. Last year Reggae Archive Records teamed up with Rob Smith/RSD to release a hand-picked selection of his finest dubstep dub plates recorded between 2006 and 2011 with a very heavy reggae influence. Previously only possible to hear in person wherever Rob deejayed, the two limited edition pressing of the RSD vinyl LP 'Dubplate Archive' rapidly sold out and generated nothing but praise and positive feedback.

Even though Rob had paid particular attention to how heavy the cut was on the LP and made sure it wasn't lacking in bass response, we still received requests for the tracks to be released individually as singles. Having discussed it with Rob we've decided to test the market for individual singles with an initial release of 'Jah the Creator' coupled with a previously unreleased dub version that is exclusive to this release.

RSD 'Jah The Creator / Jah The Creator Dub' will be released as a limited edition vinyl 10" on Reggae Archive Records. In keeping with the minimalistic design approach employed on the album, this 10" also replicates the bare-bones label design of a dub plate cut to acetate.

'Keep Stepping!' is the follow up to 2025’s 'Away' EP which saw Jaime establish himself as a dynamic new producer with an exciting future.

Whereas his debut EP, 'Away' has deep connections to Jaime’s home in rural Kent, 'Keep Stepping!' is an EP with the city in mind. Inspired by Jaime's time living in South London, the EP takes inspiration from London’s soundsystem sonics with Rosso mixing in bright melodies and dreamlike atmospherics to create a sound of his own. Much like the hum of the capital, there is an underlying groove that flows through it, whilst Jaime’s playful production keeps the music sounding buoyant and fresh. Influenced by the exuberant atmosphere of summer in the city, 'Keep Stepping!' embraces positivity and the importance of getting out of your own head and engaging with the community around you.

Jack Wyllie, saxophonist, flautist, and composer, is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Mercury Prize-nominated widescreen minimalists Portico Quartet and as one-third of the revelatory ambient improvising trio Szun Waves. Yet his distinctive voice on flute, soprano saxophone, and tenor saxophone marks him out as a key figure in contemporary music. A keen collaborator whose projects have drawn on ambient, fourth-world, electronica, and modern classical influences, 'Eternal Spring' is the first recording released under his own name.

Featuring collaborators as diverse as former Portico Quartet bandmates drummer Duncan Bellamy and bassist Milo Fitzpatrick, iconoclastic Polish artist Hania Rani, cellist Dobrawa Czocher, and Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, 'Eternal Spring' draws inspiration both from Wyllie’s love of verdant nature and from the idea of a constant, flickering sense of hope. Its compositions balance elevating melodies with cyclical rhythms while unashamedly reaching for something hopeful and beautiful.

Shimmering, rippling, budding, and blossoming—yet still appealingly familiar—'Eternal Spring' is one of those rare records that reveals the magic all around us by gently removing us from our everyday circumstances.

Whether welcoming a new day or painting night skies, 'Eternal Spring' celebrates life and its cyclical nature. Indeed, the music not only demanded the title for itself but also compelled Wyllie to release it under his given name.

“I realised I’m ready to own it,” he says.

As likely to provoke references to ambient and jazz as it is to classical music and post-rock, the album is united by an essential bucolic sense of renewal and replenishment. It also embraces a wide range of touchstones, from John Adams to John Surman, from Ryuichi Sakamoto to James Holden. Wyllie additionally acknowledges Keith Jarrett’s Arbour Zena, recorded with Jan Garbarek and Charlie Haden, as well as a kinship with South Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s serene film Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.

Having first mapped out the compositions on piano and synthesizers, Wyllie developed their nascent rhythms alongside Portico Quartet drummer Duncan Bellamy, finding confidence in the project’s restorative intentions. Recording sessions subsequently expanded to Saint Thomas Church in Clapton, Max Richter’s Studio Richter Mahr, and finally London’s Fish Factory.

“It was like I’d found a natural space between all my projects,” he says, “something I could hone in on.”

One year earlier, 50 years ago this December, THE HEARTBREAKERS arrived in London to join the Sex Pistols on the ‘Anarchy’ tour. They spent most of 1977 there, recording ‘L.A.M.F.’ and cementing their status as elder statesmen of the punk movement. This last date of their European tour was to be their very last as a band – until the reunions of course. Drummer Jerry Nolan had already jumped ship; his substitute is The Clash’s Terry Chimes. The gig was filmed for a movie that was never to be – this is the soundtrack recording. 

‘Live at the Roundhouse’ captures Jacob Alon’s stunning performance from the iconic London Roundhouse on 18 April 2026.

Released on very limited black recycled double LP, and housed in a gatefold sleeve with printed inners, the live record also comes with one of ten signed prints and includes a unique strip of 16mm film from the accompanying feature film of the performance.

On October 15th and 16th, 2020, drummer Daniel Villarreal was joined by guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss for two afternoons of recording in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles. For all three musicians, it was the first ensemble recording session they’d done in-person since the pandemic locked the world down just seven months prior. Some choice moments from these sessions made it onto Villarreal’s critically-acclaimed 2022 album 'Panamá 77', but most of the music remained unreleased.

'Lados B' is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music made by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days in 2020. Villarreal is heard leading the group through various rhythmic modes and structures for improvisation – flow as informed by the Latin funk of Fania Records as it is by the otherworldly humanity trance of Brain Records – while Parker and Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing free together (as heard on their ETA IVtet LPs) to build harmonic buoys for their spontaneous melodicism. The result is a beautifully vivid illustration of context, creativity, and collective composition from a particularly rich moment in history.

The bleak, hard-driven third LP by the Wipers (originally released in 1983) offers Greg Sage at his most chased and breathless, lashing out with sharp staccato notes as if melody were his only defense. The 3rd LP from the PDX punks finds them tightening up their sound to create what is arguably the Wipers' definitive album statement. Kurt Cobain listed it in his top 50 albums of all time. A distant cousin of the preceding Youth of America but undoubtedly no less excellent and no less venomous, Over the Edge is a return to the easily digestible song lengths of Is This Real?; however, it all but leaves that debut in its wake. On the strength of some brave/smart radio stations that decided to play this album's "Romeo" (a propulsive horn-flecked slammer in the vein of "Youth of America"), Wipers solidified their status as a certifiable force in the American underground of the early '80s. Songs like "Messenger" and "What Is" show Greg Sage's increasing skill as a pop songwriter. Despite the fusion of punk and pop, the record hardly mirrors the bands that would later be called punk-pop. In fact, this collision of the two elements makes what followed decades later seem twee.

UK garage has ridden a new wave of hype and exposure over the last few years. Artists like Sammy Virji and Interplanetary Criminal have crossed over to the mainstream, while dancefloors across the world have shaken to a switched-up version of the sound that defined the UK underground either side of the millenium.

Hidden beneath a pink balaclava, the mysterious DJ Jackum has lurked this rejuvenated scene while dropping some of the most defining bangers of the period. Often surfacing in the form of moody edits released on Soundcloud, Jackum productions inevitably demolish dancefloors whenever dropped, as they frequently are in the sets of Virji and the other big guns.

Landing on Hotflush, a storied label of UK underground music, ‘Context’ is his most substantial work to date. Six tracks covering the full spectrum of the Jackum sound, from 4/4 heaters to dubstep-adjacent eyes-down bass pressure.

And in the form of opening track ‘Floo’, Jackum spreads his wings into a place that transcends the narrow confines of genre definition. From the UKG building blocks of bass, drive, cut-up vocals, and melody, the track emerges as something both familiar and wholly unexpected - the mark of a producer at the peak of their powers.

‘Clip Empty’ is another highlight of this standout EP. Showing a flair for the cinematic, a breakdown of militaristic snares gives way to a trademark rolling bassline and earworm vocals.

Away from the 4/4 bangers, ‘Take Your Body Higher’ is a guaranteed half-step rewind, while ‘Step Up’ recalls memories of smokey Plastic People sessions of the mid-2000s.

Jewel Kid debuts on Rekids with the ‘Explicit Behaviour’ EP. Malta’s Jewel Kid debuts on Radio Slave’s Rekids with the ‘Explicit Behaviour’ EP on 14th August 2026. It follows two decades carving out his place in the House scene with releases on labels including Abode and Toolroom, while heading up his own Alleanza imprint. He was a winner of the Carl Cox Worldwide Remix Competition and a recipient of the Best Dance Production award at the Malta Music Awards, while his music routinely dominates charts such as the Beatport Top 10.

The title track of Jewel Kid’s ‘Explicit Behaviour’ EP opens with swirling synths, sirens and filtered vocals before erupting into chunky drums, classic piano stabs and crisp percussion, while ‘In The Dance’ channels early Chicago infl uences through hypnotic vocal hooks, tense synth work and bold analogue grooves. Closing cut ‘The Tribute’ rounds things off with rolling drums, sweeping filters and fuzzy synth textures that steadily build pressure into another heads-down dancefloor workout.

It's time for no.7 in the Disco Combine vinyl only series, with two heavy hitters re-worked and re-mixed from the tapes by Dave Lee. On the A is 'Not This Time (Baby) (Give Me Some Moore Mix)' a much loved slice of Philly Disco, absolutely bursting with lush orchestral arrangements. This classic jam has been given a noticeably different refresh, with a show-stopping acapella intro and more of the less heard instrumental passages. Speaking of classic, on the B is 'Jammin' Up In Smoke (Ready Steady Eddie Mix)' a Harris Machine gospel-charged chugger, which is given a more groove based mix, which builds up instrumentally before hitting some falsetto vocals half way through, leading to a big hands in the air finale. Lester Sterling / The Paragons ‘Afrikaan Beat’ / ‘My Satisfaction’: Addictive and super-catchy classic Studio One instrumental cut led by the great saxophonist Lester Sterling, a founding member of The Skatalites. Sterling recorded extensively for Clement Dodd and this single was released in 1969 with The Paragon’s killer rocksteady ‘My Satisfaction’ on the flip. The song ‘Afrikaan Beat’ was originally recorded by the German orchestra leader Bert Kaempfert and was based on South African Kwela style of music. ‘Afrikaan Beat’ featured on Soul Jazz Records’ ‘Studio One Scorcher’. The original Studio One 45s cost up to £400.

Following the release of their debut in late July, Luft quickly return now with a second single, ‘The Punch and Judy Man’. As with that previous single, the digital release is to later be complemented by a limited edition 12” single backed with a vinyl only B-side.

‘The Punch and Judy Man’ once again sees the Berlin-based five-piece working with Luke Haines, a union that increasingly makes great artistic sense given their shared interests in post-new wave pop dynamics and subject matter that scratches the facade of the routines of English suburban life to reveal hidden charms both romantic and malign. Frontman, Tom Dougall, of course has a history of this kind of approach, having also served as the singer in cult-favourites TOY for over a decade, though his choice of imagery and songwriting now feels sharper than ever, the nostalgic references to a bygone era only vaguely disguising the sense that all might not be well. “Behind your back the song’s begun, hear the trickster play the fool” he sings, and with it plugs into that classic British tradition - be that in the songs of Black Box Recorder and Pulp or the films of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh - of uncovering something more sinister lurking amidst the apparently banal.

If It Aint Jazz, is about quality over quantity, inviting world class musicians and producers to bring a modern edge to jazz and soul roots...

Back for Volume 5 of their vinyl only series, this time they invite young Australian artists Close Counters. The duo effortless blends jazz, disco and soul with house and broken beat vibes for yet another killer 12".

On the A side, 'Sunshine' flips a classic gospel cut into a euphoric anthem with a raw shuffling groove that will work for the house heads and broken beat and garage fans. 'Soul to Soul' features a catchy bassline, vocal chops and added synth parts that build into a peak time disco weapon.

The collaboration between Mad Professor and Yabby You goes back to the 1993 Ariwa LP In Ariwa Studios, a showcase-format meeting between the Guyanese-born south London studio architect and one of Jamaica's most theologically singular vocalists. Vivian Jackson - the "Jesus Dread," whose work ran from King Tubby's console through Blood and Fire reissues before his death in 2010 - is an unlikely pairing with Ariwa's analogue electronics, but the logic holds: both work in a register of deep, self-determined roots production. Now star track 'Jahovia' lands here as a 12" on ARI 350, with Mad Professor's 'Fake News Dub' on the flip.

Folk music has a bad habit of being presented as a deathly serious concern. It’s something you cry to, it’s overly sacred, it’s solemnly considered by critic-historians. But Folk Bitch Trio, former high school friends Heide Peverelle (they/them), Jeanie Pilkington (she/her) and Gracie Sinclair (she/her), have a shared sense of humour that is embedded deep in their music, and that sets it alight, safe from the self-serious traps of the genre. 'Bloque 6' (1968), by Juan Carlos Calderón, is a landmark recording in the history of modern jazz in Spain, markedly different from the albums Calderón would record just a few years later under the influence of funk, disco music, and even flamenco.

Juan Carlos Calderón enjoyed a long and successful career, composing and arranging some of the most iconic songs by Spanish artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Mocedades, and Ana Belén, among many others. However, his musical beginnings were closely tied to the world of jazz. His training as a pianist and the restless, adventurous spirit he shared with his brothers—alongside whom he opened one of Spain’s first jazz clubs, a venue that welcomed many of the world’s leading jazz figures—shaped the early stages of his career and led him into the jazz scene.

His recording debut came in 1968 with the release of 'Juan Carlos Calderón presenta a Juan Carlos Calderón', followed a few months later by 'Bloque 6'. For the recording of this album, he assembled a group of prominent Spanish jazz musicians, including Pedro Iturralde, Vlady Bas, and Pepe Nieto. The repertoire combines original compositions, such as the outstanding ‘Sambando,’ with interpretations of works by Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Oliver Nelson. The album’s sound invites comparison with Nelson’s celebrated 'The Blues and the Abstract Truth' period, reflecting strong hard bop and modal jazz influences.

In 1969, the album was awarded Best International Jazz Album of the Year in the United States, and years later it was reissued on CD by the prestigious Blue Note label.

The man behind the mask, Jonathan Bree, returns with his sixth studio album 'Don’t Call It Love'. Soul Revivers is an ambitious and collaborative project from David Hill and Nick Manasseh, bringing together icons of Jamaican music with some of London’s finest musical talent, steeped in West London’s reggae heritage. After their critically acclaimed 2022 album 'On The Grove' and subsequent dub version 'Grove Dub', they return with the new album 'Holding It Down'. 

After 'On The Grove’s impressive set of collaborations with the likes of Ken Boothe, Ernest Ranglin and Devon Russell, Holding It Down features a further roster of legends. Johnny Clarke, one of reggae’s founding fathers, performs the lead track, written with Manasseh and Hill for the record, 'The Good Book', as well as his earlier composition 'Come Back To Me', originally recorded by Neil ‘Mad Professor’ Fraser in 1985, and given the Soul Revivers treatment.

Fellow Jamaicans, vocalists Susan Cadogan and Earl 16, and trombonist Vin Gordon, bring their exceptional talents to three further tracks: 'No Place', 'Serious Time' and 'Everything Is Everything' respectively. Also featured is Sandra Cross, a stalwart of the UK reggae scene, who appears 'A Thousand Years' and 'Like A Lion'.

While shining a light on key figures from the pillars of reggae, Soul Revivers are defined as much by their contemporary vision and vitality, working with some of the finest musicians from the wider London music scene. Appearing on 'Stable Way' is bandleader and trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey (aka Ms. Maurice) and Anoushka Nangay from Kokoroko (who previously appeared on 'On The Grove' standalone 45, 'Coconut Rock').

Recorded at Nick Manasseh’s The Yard studio, the rhythm section includes Manasseh (bass), with Adrian ‘Kenz’ McKenzie (drums), Will Rast (keyboards), James Shepherd and Wayne Almond (guitars), alongside horns Colin Humphries and Dougal Caston.

Soul Revivers prove once again they are exemplifiers of world class reggae, expertly drawing on its history, while incorporating contemporary artistry and new sounds, to create something fresh and timeless.

Presented in a beautiful sleeve, which features an incredible black and white photograph by Charlie Phillips of the first Notting Hill Carnival in 1966, adorning both sides of the cover, 'Holding It Down' is available on LP and CD. Fittingly released to coincide with the 2026 Carnival, it is an institution close to the hearts of Soul Revivers - Nick having played there on the Manasseh sound system in the 1990s, while David runs the official Carnival after-parties at the The Tabernacle - as they continue to expand West London’s reggae connections.

'Piano Works 2016-2026' collects fourteen impromptu pieces by composer and producer John Carroll Kirby, written whenever he had the opportunity to sit at a piano while on the road.

These mostly solo works for piano were recorded in Los Angeles, Rome, Tokyo, Wollongong (Australia), rural New Zealand and London.

'Piano Works 2016-2026' marks a departure from the full-band sound of recent albums Blowout and Septet, which Kirby has spent the past years performing live around the world. The album is a study in piano repertoire: Baroque, Romantic, Impressionist, jazz, minimalist, atonal, and more. Most of the pieces have an impromptu feel – improvised, or meant to sound improvised, or at least written in one sitting.

The collected pieces on 'Piano Works 2016-2026' are a document of Kirby’s life as a piano player and touring musician, and “serve as the melodic / harmonic lexicon for what would inform all my other compositions of the past ten years.”

The Chicago trio of Black Duck is a natural fit for collaboration with acclaimed Basque musician Elena Setién. Black Duck’s bassist/guitarist Douglas McCombs, guitarist Bill MacKay and drummer Charles Rumback have been lauded for their adaptability as live performers and collaborators for decades, performing in countless ensembles from Tortoise to Brokeback to collaborations with Ryley Walker, Bill Callahan, James Singleton and many more. Setién honed her improvisational skills in duo Little Red Suitcase before going on to collaborate with the likes of Steve Gunn, Mary Lattimore, and Glenn Kotche (Wilco) to name a few. Black Duck and Elena Setién’s combined preternatural ability to converse at the boundaries of improvisation and composition makes for fertile ground in which every subtle gesture carries weight.

On their debut, self-titled collaborative release, Black Duck and Elena Setién alchemize the ease of their live chemistry and their wealth of experience into a refined menagerie. The quartet first played together in early 2025 having only just met, trading off sitting in on each other’s sets on a run of shows throughout Spain. Recorded just a few months later in Chicago at Palisade with Nick Broste after only a few hours of rehearsal, the record embraces the spontaneity of those performances. The freewheeling compositions take on added layers of depth with skillfully layered overdubs. The album perfectly balances the openness and core electric energy shared between each musician in the room and sumptuous, detailed arrangements.

Together, Black Duck and Elena Setién sounds like a singular unit and four powerhouses all at once. Their collective compositional acumen makes for an exquisite diversity of sounds and movements that all cohere into a singular album only they could make. A gem of collective work, the record is the sound of a quartet of masters of their craft moving in tandem.

'Sweet Tooth', which arrived three years after Mom Jeans' second LP 'Puppy Love', was recorded in New Jersey at The Barber Shop Studios with producer Brett Romnes (The Front Bottoms, Oso Oso, Dogleg). At the time, Butler said it was the first time the band had a proper, top-to-bottom studio experience, which meant no cutting corners, and an ability to chase a previously-unattainable level of polish. Tyler Povanda (Save Face) and Kory Gregory (Prince Daddy & the Hyena) contributed vocals to the record.

The music on 'Sweet Tooth' marked a departure for Butler from his usual writing style. "I fell in love with bands like Modern Baseball and Front Bottoms and Joyce Manor, so I wanted to write songs like that," says Butler. "That's what our first two records were: me trying to stay in that box, cause I think that's where I felt comfortable. "

'Sweet Tooth' felt like an eternal dessert-before-dinner, a rejection of the idea that we need to suffer before we get to the good stuff. You've got one life. Indulge your 'Sweet Tooth'.

Finally! The sixth studio album Dinosaur Jr. have recorded in the 20 years since their triumphal rebirth. Created in short, intense bursts over the course of a year at Amherst's Bisquiteen Studio, 'There Near' was recorded almost entirely by Dino's core trio -- king of the thunder tubs, Murph, human tornado Lou Barlow on bass/vocals and the inimitable J Mascis on guitar/vocals -- with a bit of piano and organ work by local master musician, Ken Mauri. And the album roars from start to finish.

Trying to define the essence of Dino's sound is never easy. It's an instantly recognizable blend of loose vocals, sharp guitars and an animalistic rhythm section, but these parts combine into a whole far more magical and exciting than its components.

J's guitar tone throughout 'There Near' is even more animalistic than usual, perhaps owing partly to the fact he's playing through a recently acquired 70's Mesa Boogie MK 1 amp. “I bought the same amp that Chris Dixon had when we made our first album,” J says. “Chris recorded us at his house with his amp. It has a real interesting sound I haven't gotten for a while. And it's something I was trying to get back to on this album.”

Asked about the philosophical opacity of his lyrical approach, J says. “I'm not always sure what a song is 'about' when I'm writing it. I guess the meaning will present itself at some point. I'll use whatever words work. And a lot of it will be influenced by whatever esoteric mumbo jumbo I'm reading at the time. I try not to think too hard about any of it. Someone suggested this album sounds more upbeat, but I guess that's to do with my delivery, because lyrics like 'No Friends' might make you think otherwise. But I usually write in the third person. It's all just make believe.”

While it's true 'There Near' does present a slightly softer lyrical edge on some of J's songs, even a relatively gorgeous ballad like 'Put It Down' eventually explodes in a shower of fiery guitar distentions. It's just what happens. Meanwhile the two tunes provided by Lou -- 'Blowin' Up' and 'No One's Ready' -- may have less frenzied musical settings, but their lyrics sound like pointed and timely attacks on our current regime. As is so often the case, Lou's melodic constructions have a friendly mien, but his lyrics cut like knives.

'There Near' continues Dinosaur Jr.'s string of classic albums. The new songs are sure to sound amazing with their monstrous riffs blaring from live stages amidst their historical brethren. Can't wait to catch them live, but in the meantime 'There Near' will be a constant companion. The nearer the better.

Barry says: The newest Dinosaur Jr outing sees the core trio smash through a selection of roaring grunge monoliths and steamy riffmongering. Though there are moments of contemplative calm amongst the fuzzy guitars and pummeling percussion, it's ostensibly a classic DJ noise, and one that further cements their reputation as one of the most consistently enjoyable acts around.

Navajo White is a color. It’s the color of an off white, interior, house paint. Throughout his teens into adulthood, John Reis was as a house painter by trade. The soiled walls of evacuated apartments was his canvas. Here he would cover up the residue of life’s stains with a fresh coat of the beige, human white-out that is Navajo White. Amongst the vacated, drywall chambers littered with the scant detritus of a fleeing existence is where this record began. It started as road noise, a repetitious hum of a fictional dialogue. A languageless, argument of noise that took shape as a disconnect between two people. They are both barricaded by an impenetrable surface tension that harbors the distortion of their prolonged isolation from the world beyond their self imposed exile. For all that can’t be solved or thrown away here’s a thick coat of Navajo White to cover our tracks as if to say “we were never here and this never happened.”

This is the fifth Swami John Reis album and features Jason Kourkounis (Hot Snakes, Delta 72, Night Marchers) on drums as well as contributions from Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Obits) on guitar, Gar Wood (Hot Snakes, Tanner, Night Marchers) on bass, Joe Guevara (Jejune, Swami and the Bed Of Nails) on piano and keyboards and Rob Crow (Pinback, PLOSIVS) and Jacob Turnbloom (Mrs. Magician) on backing vocals. Taking musical cues from later period Wipers, the more low key Saints songs, early recordings of The Church as well as The Damned on their Black Album, 'Navajo White' pits sentiment vs the unsentimental. For any other artist, an album like Asher White’s Love Aggregates might come out of a conscious push to treat no idea as off-limits, to make something bold and new. Jubilant art-funk about cocaine addiction—absolutely. Swooning orchestral pop about Jerry Garcia—why not? Rippling electronic noise, jazzy brushed drums, an elderly motorcyclist with dementia, a profoundly emotional bass solo—put them all in one song. There are threadbare folk tunes, glammed-up power-pop bangers, “Sir Duke” horn charts, Morton Feldman string arrangements, layers of guitar feedback like violins made of liquid chrome. Yes, for another artist, Love Aggregates might be the most adventurous album in their catalog. For Asher White, it’s what passes for settling down.

White is 25 years old and has been making records—writing, recording, producing, and playing almost everything herself—for over a decade. She’d released two dozen of them on Bandcamp before catching the indie-rock industry’s attention with 2024’s Home Constellation Study and last year’s 8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living. The latter album’s dizzy eclecticism and formidable craft landed her on Rolling Stone’s Future 25 list with the likes of xaviersobased and Oklou, along with a slew of other accolades. That came as something of a surprise to White, who didn’t craft the chaotic 8 Tips with a breakthrough in mind. Love Aggregates feels like a chance, for one of the most thrilling musical talents of her generation, at a more deliberate introduction.

She wrote and recorded her new album while her previous one was gathering
momentum, tinkering in the DIY recording studio where she always works, acutely conscious now that people would be listening to whatever she came up with. At around the same time, her years-long romantic relationship ended in a flurry of betrayal and addiction, her first experience of devastating heartbreak. Even so, Love Aggregates is not a bitter album about wallowing or seething, but instead making use of those impulses as raw materials in work that transcends the specificity of its origins, fashioning them into something surprising and new.

Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell returns to the Spring Revisited project, and he delivers another jazz-infused house mix of a classic funk track by the iconic Fatback Band.

Spring Revisited is collaborative project between Ace Records and Acid Jazz, inviting influential house music producers to reinterpret classic tracks from seminal New York label. Spring Records, a pioneer in funk, soul and disco.

After a series of sell-out and chart-topping 12” and 7” releases, as well as a 2LP compilation, the project continues with these two new mixes of the Fatback Band’s ‘(Do The) Spanish Hustle)’. Claussell combines the original classic funk elements with Latino percussion and samba-styled trumpets.

First up is his 'Sacred Rhythm Version’, which lifts the tempo and loops a section of the original's percussion. Keeping the trumpets, and soulful vocal phrases, he adds a DJ-friendly kick drum and shows off his improvisation skills with a vibrant synth line.

On the flip, he strips back some of the drums and horns and focuses on the bassline with the 'Spanish Harlem Dub,' which is a moody rework utilising some funk-infused organ chords.

On the original track Joe says: "I can vividly recall the very first time I heard Spanish Hustle blasting through my brother Jackie’s stereo system. Not long afterward, I experienced its energy again on the dance floor at a discotheque known as The Inferno, where it was masterfully delivered by the legendary René Hewitt. The record left an imprint on my spirit that never faded.’

10 years since his first edits outing on RNT, label co-founder JKriv digs into his deep well of reworks for a four-tracker of cheeky dancefloor madness. Coming in hot on the A side, "I Feel Amor" is modern twist on the disco classic anthem, a peak time weapon of epic proportions with hard-hitting beats and churning synths, and the inimitable sing-along vocal (pero en Español). "Love Dub" is a stripped down deep house affair, a solid driving groove with thunderous bass, synth accents and acapella flourishes. On the B-side, "Cuando Bailo" is the edit you didn’t know you needed; a callback to a bygone era of one-hit wonder magic, flipped masterfully to be all-club and just a sprinkle of camp. And rounding off the record "Dance Sexy" takes an obscure purple-hued cover into hypnotic red-light territory, with funky synth stabs riding a pulsing and infectious bass line, in classic JKriv fashion.

Stargazing Brooklyn noise-rock cosmonauts Upper Wilds — the power-trio led by Parts & Labor co-founder Dan Friel — return with another set of lean anthems filtered through a flamethrower. Their speediest, most explosive album yet, 'Mercury', is a meditation on death, with Friel expounding on his brush with skin cancer, climate change, funerals, Henry Kissinger, and a world seemingly on fire. Buoyed by recent tours with acts like Pelican, Uniform, Psychic Graveyard and Savak, the trio’s increased speed is met with a precision that gives every hairpin turn more wallop. Mercury’s molten, non-stop riffing is captured with grit and punch by engineer Travis Harrison (Guided By Voices, The Men) and is bolstered by longtime collaborator/saxophonist and fellow-New York mainstay Jeff Tobias (Sunwatchers) and vocalist Erin Dawson of LA-based experimental black metal band Genital Shame. Upper Wilds’ space-rock adventures through their recent albums 'Mars', 'Venus', & 'Jupiter' came replete with stories of the heavens and humanity alike. On this fourth installment, the closest planet to the sun, things take a darker turn. The small, barren planet Mercury was named after the gods' speedy messenger and guide to the underworld, and the album syphons Upper Wilds’ fuzz-pop aesthetics into concise, scorched anthems about the brevity and fragility of life with the ferocity of a band playing on the edge of extinction.

Ask Paul Heaton how many songs he’s written and he’ll tell you he’s not really sure. Perhaps that’s unsurprising: this summer it’s 40 years since The Housemartins released their debut album, 'Hull: 0 London: 4'. Subsequently, he’s released, in various configurations – with The Housemartins and The Beautiful South, solo and with Jacqui Abbot, not to mention as Biscuit Boy –another 21 studio albums, plenty going gold, some multi-platinum, as they’ve risen to the charts’ highest reaches. For each, moreover, he’ll have written many many more songs than he’ll ever include.

Now, less than two years since 'The Mighty Several', this prolific, poetic observer of human nature is back with another fifteen gems. “I've had stuff coming in and out of my brain since I was 17 or 18,” he laughs, “but I’m surprised the tunes keep popping into my head. You've got to get it out of your system, though. Writer’s block just sounds made-up. You don't get plumber's block. If your toilet's full of shit, you don't think, ‘Do you know what? I can't get my head around this.’ You either call a plumber or do it yourself. That's how I see it with songs. Don't leave it in there. Just get it out. Even if it's shit.”

To observers of the Manchester-dwelling songwriter, such self-effacement will be familiar. Few artists are as modest, a spirit Heaton carries over into his lifestyle, whether taking the tram to the studio when’s it raining or touring England by bike in 2010 (and the whole UK two years later.) “I've just tried to be myself,” he says, humble once more, “because I'm not a rotten person. I don't think most people are.” He’s also uncommonly willing to share his microphone, letting others make his songs their own. This time, Rianne Downey picks up where she left off on 'The Mighty Several' – having first covered for an ailing Jacqui Abbott on tour in 2020 after Heaton discovered her on social media – while Ireland’s Declan O’Rourke brings out her Dolly Parton side on rambunctious country bacchanal, ‘The Whisky Did’.

'Jenius', Heaton’s new album’s title, is a symptom of this unassuming style. “If anybody ever calls me a genius,” he explains, “I always say, ‘What?! With a J?!’ The spelling would obviously be wrong.” Fortunately, there’s nothing bashful about these songs, something reflected in the LP’s cover, the first to feature a photo of Heaton since the Housemartin’s debut album. Indeed, 'Jenius' betrays the truth of his talents, and its songs – of love and loneliness, pubs and booze, community and counsel, a nod to football, the state of the nation, and the overall wisdom of kindness – are distinguished by his notably tender voice, his enchanting melodies and a meticulous, effortless craft. “If I can get a variety of people of all sorts of backgrounds to say, ‘Oh, that could be about me or you,’” he says, “then I've been successful”.

Such diversity isn’t restricted to his lyrics. Kicking off with ‘Can’t Get Next To You’’s rowdy three-chord rush and rounding things up with ‘A Son A Father’’s extravagant but barbed glam rock, 'Jenius' dips its toes assuredly into rock ‘n’ roll, country, soul and ska, blues, Yacht Rock, even Latin terrain. Again, his duets are as charming and loaded as Nancy & Lee’s, yet, on the likes of the fragile ‘Jet Back Sky’ and bittersweet ‘Send In The Clowns’, he explores what he considers more “atmospheric” territory than ever before.

All of this is shot through with his quintessential blend of empathy, wit and contempt. His protagonists pine for the elusive (‘Can’t Get Next To You’) and revel in flaws (‘My Favourite Kind Of Idiot’). They find the best in their circumstances (‘She Ain’t Pretty’) or find themselves written out of history (‘Do Not Ask Me’). They commit to romance (‘I Want The Job’), watch it “screwed up or binned” (‘Sad Songs And Lawsuits’), or concede that it’s not for them (‘Good For The Bees’). They rail at racists (‘One Eye Open’) and berate buffoons (‘Send In The Clowns’), get pissed (‘Don’t Lean On Me’), and if at times they extol the benefits of maintaining good humour (‘Go Upstream’), at others they spotlight uncomfortable truths, like the insanity of humanity’s impatience (‘Before Before’). Indeed, there aren’t many chart-topping songwriters who can pack a punch with Heaton’s prowess, as when he crowns ‘A Son A Father’’s belting eulogy with “... Husband and a cunt.”

'Jenius' would be a remarkable album at any time, even more for a man who turned 64 this spring. But it’s still more remarkable because it sounds like it was a joy to make but was recorded as his ten-year marriage ended. There is, however, no point seeking clues to this development in its songs because they were begun in the months following 'The Mighty Several' and penned, like so many before them, during cycling breaks in Holland. They were finished there, too, in a village north of Amsterdam, with guitarist Jonny Lexus. Having worked with Heaton since 2010’s 'Acid Country', this time he earned eight co-writing credits as well as helping arrange other tracks. “It's nice writing songs by yourself,” Heaton says. “…but it's really nice writing them with Jonny.”

Like 2022’s 'N.K. Pop', 'Jenius' was recorded in early 2026 at Manchester’s Blueprint Studios with a loyal coterie of associates. Bassist Chris Wise, who’s done a dozen years in Paul’s band and drummer Pete Marshall, a cool 17 years, returned again, though duties with Squeeze meant keyboardist Stephen Large was replaced by Toby Chapman. (“They all told him, ‘Just do the opposite of what you'd expect the song would need, and Paul would probably like that.’”) It was also produced, like 'The Mighty Several', by the legendary Ian Broudie. “Everybody in the band said he's the best who's worked on their instrument, and I could hear the difference,” Heaton says. “I think the production's probably even better this time because I've trusted him even more. I'm not technically musical, but he understands where I want to get to and he's given me shortcuts. I remember with The Housemartins I said something sounded ‘too milky’ and they're like, ‘What do you mean, ‘milky’?!’ It’s really nice to have somebody who translates that. He's like me, but with knowledge!”

This December marks forty years since Heaton’s first number one, The Housemartins’ cover of the Isley Jasper Isley’ song’ ‘Caravan Of Love’. That said, despite the many hits he’s had – from exuberant anthems like ‘Happy Hour’ to poignant portraits like ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’, from platinum singles like ‘Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)’ to number one albums like Manchester Calling – Jenius feels like a real achievement. “I’m particularly proud I've done this record at all,” he admits. “I didn't want the band to see what was going on in my private life, but going into a studio and seeing your friends and people who love you was a break from what was happening. Normally I write happy tunes when I'm skipping to the shops, but I've not been out and about much, whistling. I don't know why it sounds like fun, but, yeah, it is, and I'm glad it sounds like fun.”

Ultimately, Heaton estimates he’s now written some four or five hundred songs. In so doing, he’s established – though he’s too self-deprecating to state this himself – his own distinctive, if unconventional brand of quasi-English folk. Moreover, these singular classics not only keep coming but somehow keep getting better. “Even though I treat it like a job,” he concludes, “it never feels like a job. When I go into writing mode, I take it seriously, even if I'm having a drink. I feel proud of the person I am when I'm writing. I’m really in the zone, as they say. Then I ruin it in moments of silliness afterwards!”

Silly or serious, poignant or pointed, therein lies Paul Heaton’s 'Jenius'.

Mark Jenkin, the BAFTA Award winning director, editor, screenwriter, cinematographer and musician, presents the score to his new film, 'Rose of Nevada' on Invada Records. Unique among British feature filmmakers for the
analogue way in which he crafts his films - all three feature films have been shot on 16mm using a Bolex clockwork camera – as well as his multifaceted roles as the writer, director, director of photography and editor of the film, once more he is responsible for handling the sound design and composing the original score.

The new score mirrors the techniques employed in the film, with analogue synthesisers drawing the listener into nebulous hypnotic tones and delicate movements.

Composed, produced, engineered and performed by Mark Jenkin using synthesiser, guitar, percussion and loops & effects, the environmental recordings remind us of the context in which the music was originally borne, but as the score ebbs and flows between ambient tranquil seas and crashing storms, it affirms its presence as a powerful stand-alone piece of work.
The score’s physical release follows the Cornish director’s third feature film: the time-travelling Rose of Nevada cinematic release in UK and Irish cinemas on 24 April, with a BFI Blu-ray and BFI Player release in the summer.

Mystery Jets return with ‘A Hole To See The Sky Through’, a conceptually rich new album that acts as the inward-facing counterpart to ‘Curve of the Earth’, shifting focus from vast external landscapes to the intimate ways we perceive and process the world. Inspired by Yoko Ono’s artwork of the same name (used with permission as the cover art) and her recent London exhibition, the record embraces the idea of finding meaning, hope, and perspective through absence, limitation, and reframing.

Mystery Jets are a highly regarded London-based indie rock band, known for their evolving, critically acclaimed albums and captivating live performances. They have been recognized with a prestigious Ivor Novello Award nomination, achieved multiple chart-reaching albums and singles, and are often noted for their distinctive songwriting and artistic longevity.

Barry says: Widescreen rock music that moves from grand, stadium melodies and soaring shoegaze-adjacent walls of sound into more restrained, grooving psychedelic workouts. There are points of deep melancholy and introspection but it's all presented with the sort of swaying grandiosoty that they're known for.

Julia Holter always knew that there was more to the song 'Materia' than what she included on her wondrous 2024 album, 'Something in the Room She Moves'. She had written the tune not long after the tours for 2018’s 'Aviary' concluded, and it worked well for solo shows—her voice and piano, lyrics still morphing as she played with the meaning.

But on the new 'Materia', a kind of companion LP to 'Something...', Holter has realized not one but two distinct versions of the song. 'Materia 2' is a hallucinatory dream of drum machines, fretless bass, and clarinet, Holter’s voice spiralling through ether alongside that of Jessika Kenney. And on 'Materia 3', intended as a hidden bonus track in an homage to the CD era of her youth, Holter literally slows down the take from 'Something...'. The change not only emphasizes the unpredictable glory of the harmonies within but also reiterates the song’s emotional sophistication, the sense that it’s about learning how to live.

'Materia' is only seven tracks long, but Holter works in nearly that many modes here. There are two astounding improvisations, one where she builds a one-person ensemble of drum machines and synth lines and another where she manipulates her voice until each word seems to contain another symphony. And yet another is built from a riff that came from a demo for Something, a demo that itself is one of 'Materia’s most spellbinding and emotional pieces, 'My Twin'. These seven songs show that Holter is among her generation’s most fluid writers of art-pop, moving among ideas and idioms with true exploratory aplomb. 'Materia' is a kind of playground for Holter, where each distinct scene steadily coheres into a moving whole.

Barry says: A warmingly evocative selection of missives based around Holter's 2024 'Something In The Room She Moves' LP as a sort of companion LP of sorts. It's a beautifully stretched definition of her already fluid sound, pulling at the seams of quiet passages and turning them into barely-there ambience or a perfect alternate universe version of something we know so well. Recognisable in tone but very little else, these pieces sit just as well alone as they do with their spiritual partners. Lovely as ever.

Noisy, chaotic, and defiantly experimental, Swell Maps may not have found commercial success in their time, but their impact on music is undeniable. An inspiration to bands such as R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement and Nirvana, with Kurt Cobain famously being a fan and often seen sporting a Swell Maps T-Shirt. A democracy within the confines of punk’s anything is possible, members Biggles Books, Jowe Head and brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks – helped shape the landscape of post-punk and DIY music. Now, for the first time in over 40 years, 'The John Peel Sessions' brings together all three of their recordings for John Peel, a figure instrumental in championing their sound.

Formed in the early ’70s and fully realised by 1976, Swell Maps embodied the DIY ethos, launching their own label and self-releasing the jagged, frenetic debut single ‘Read About Seymour’ in 1977. Peel was an early supporter, playing their record as soon as it landed on his desk – a moment the band described as one of disbelief and elation. His regular airplay of their music helped solidify their cult status, and these sessions capture the raw energy, off-kilter melodies, and boundary-pushing creativity that defined them.

'The John Peel Sessions' is a vital document of Swell Maps at their most unfiltered – three sessions of unpredictable, exhilarating noise.

I Will Die In This Jean Jacket is a testimony of how the lines between commitment and attachments are often blurred. It is the new gloom-punk project from Jim Blaha (The Blind Shake, Green/Blue). Blaha has collaborated with luminaries including Michael Yonkers, John Reis, Shannon Selberg, Dale Flattum and Zak Sally and has released records on Goner, Castle Face, Dirtnap, Hozac, Feel It, Slovenly and Swami. On 'Hang From A Cloud' he concludes over three years of artistic solitude by heading back into the basement to create in an even deeper state of isolation. Formed in Minneapolis this past December, the late-night sessions gradually revealed a concept: capturing the feeling he had from the mixtapes a friend used to make during their teenage skateboarding years—where late ’70s post punk sat comfortably alongside the more exposed underground sounds of the ’80s and ’90s and every song seemed to come from the same hazy, imaginary city somewhere far, far away.

Recording onto a 1/4” tape machine and mixing everything down to the all important cassette, Blaha emerged with an indiffussable sound. 'Hang From A Cloud' is a long-lost pirate radio transmission from an alternate 1980s universe. The album is entirely analog by design. Guitars, vocals, drums, drum machines and bass all captured on cobbled together equipment in a cinder block bunker on a frigid midwest, winter night. There is a one dimensional resonance with a sheen of distortion and rust that is betrayed by the direct and simplistic beauty of the songwriting. 'Hang From A Cloud' is a no-fi, DIY treasure that transports the listener to a parallel dimension where The Go Betweens, The Clean, Jesus And The Mary Chain, New Order, Guided By Voices and Flip Your Wig-era Hüsker Dü are cherished and celebrated the same.

Heavily influenced by the Ramones - the band opened their first live show with 'Blitzkrieg Bop' and from then on opened with a new Ramones song every time they played, working through the band's complete catalogue in chronological order - as all manner of hyper-melodic and high energy rock. The Eastern Dark were a classic trio powered by former Celibate Rifles bassplayer James Darroch's blazing guitar and anchored by former Lime Spiders backing vocalist Bill Gibson's hard driving and melodic bass playing (and supreme backing vocals) and Geoff Milne's untouchable beat keeping. They set Sydney's Radio Birdman influenced scene alight in 1984 and quickly built an international following on the back of their classic single. Sadly, just hours after completing what would become their next release - the mini-LP "Long Live the New Flesh" - the band's life, and that of 26-year old James Darroch, was brutally ended in a road accident whilst the band was on its way to Melbourne.

On the back of the tragedy, the band's music lived on and it's global impact was reflected in the influence it bore on numerous bands, from Boston's the Lemoneads to Tokyo's Teengenenete, and obviously a succession of Australian bands from the Hard-Ons through to God and the Meanies and beyond.

After years of searching, surviving members Bill Gibson and Geoff Milne recently found the single's original multi-track tapes, and for the new release, the original recordings have been both remixed and remastered for maximum impact under their supervision.

A long-awaited addendum to a series that has previously encompassed artists including Daft Punk, Justice, Hot Chip and Tame Impala, Alkan delivers two club-friendly tracks from his own Phantasy Sound imprint,

For a propulsive take on Josh Caffe’s emotionally defiant, warehouse-bound ‘You’, originally produced in collaboration with Quinn Whalley of Paranoid London, Alkan delves deep into a lifelong appreciation of Chicago house. Stripped, spacious and tough on the drums, Alkan keeps Caffe’s demands front and centre while riding out an irresistible bassline and conjuring a brooding, typically psychedelic atmosphere.

Flipping from minimal jack to maximal funk, Alkan pays a visit to the esoteric archives of Cowboy Rhythmbox, the partnership of much-loved London DJ Nathan Gregory Wilkins alongside pop-provocateur Richard X. ‘Rock Music’ arrives rescued from a dormant hard drive of demos, its frenetic collage of samples stitched back together and fully recharged for a circuit-frying electro workout by Alkan, operating here at full tilt for the dancefloor.

Original Jazz Classics celebrates John Coltrane’s centennial with this release of the mono edition of 'Coltrane'. Originally released on Prestige in 1957 the album features Coltrane alongside Johnnie Splawn, Sahib Shihab, Red Garland, Mal Waldron, Paul Chambers, and Albert “Tootie” Heath. Lost In Another World is James Ellis Ford’s singular, emotionally resonant second solo album. Made from start to finish in just over two weeks in early 2025, while James was on a hospital ward between punishing rounds of chemotherapy, following a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), it shares the experiences from the frontline of illness; fear, love, reassurance, boredom, pain, calm, disbelief, and ultimately hope. These transmissions from the eye of the storm have informed an album which is truly something special.

Joyce and Tutty Moreno, the legendary vocalist/guitarist and drummer who helped define the sound of Brazilian popular music, have partnered with Adrian Younge to create 'JID027'. The result is an album that captures the ethereal beauty of collective improvisation, the weight of saudade, and the unbreakable bond between two of Brazil's most revered musicians.

The album is a delicate balance of premeditation and improvisation. Joyce's compositions-'Mandala';' 'Uaná Eté': 'Is This Love?': 'Fingers': and 'Janeiro'-sit alongside instrumental pieces by Younge, where Joyce's voice becomes a horn, a flute, a river of melody without words. The album closes with 'Circulo Vicioso': a recitation of the iconic poem by Machado de Assis, Brazil's greatest writer. Joyce's spoken word, delivered in her native Portuguese, transforms the track into a meditation on life, death, and the cyclical nature of art.
