Cubo Live Sessions: Volume One

A special collection of unreleased music by I:Cube, recorded live in Paris.

During recent years, and after spending some time in the studio rehearsing for his live shows, I:Cube has been recording numerous improvised live sessions on his live rig. Arranged and mixed on the fly, as Nicolas says, it's all about capturing THAT moment, playing with your instinct, and letting yourself go. It's all what making techno is about really. Interacting live with the sound, feeling and responding to what the machines offer you, and having a good time.

Musically, "Session 1" is a serious bit of peak time excavation, boring a techno tunnel deep into the molten core of planet Earth, "Session 2" borrows a siren from Screamadelica and dives into the prog-house revival quicker than you can spell Sasha. Predictably, it's "Session 3" which does it for me, dropping anchor to a hypnotic 102 BPM, then embracing ring mod breakdowns, tribal perx and a generally shamanic vibe. Frog lickers rejoice!

Tornado Wallace

Lonely Planet Remixes - Inc. I:Cube / Move D / Prins Thomas

After the well deserved critical success of Tornado Wallace's 'Lonely Planet' (No.5 in the only chart that matters...) Running Back enlist a crack team of remix heroes to transform the Talk Talk-inspired Balearic pop of "Today" and the new age thrust of "Trance Encounters" into the floor filling club cuts the DJs have been dying for. First among equals is Versatile boss I:Cube, who calls on decades of dance floor experience to twist "Today" into a esoteric, Asiatic, Balearic house groover awash with precision percussion and a rolling boogie bassline. So far so fantastic, but then the Frenchman blows us away with his beats mix, a rambunctious rhythm track topped with fx soaked vocal idents and mixed to within an inch of its life. Say YES! Elsewhere, semi-professional sommelier and deep house deity Move D delivers his own version of "Today", treating the light and airy elements of the OG to a burrowing bassline and pulsating 4/4, before Prins Thomas offers an interdimensional acid disco overhaul of "Trance Encounters", reminding everyone exactly why he's the Prins.

    STAFF COMMENTS

says: I'm having this! The best bits of our No.5 LP of 2017 get pulled apart and re-rendered by I:Cube, Prins Thomas and Move D. Expect deep house drama, Balearic bounce, lysergic space disco and powerhouse percussion across these four mixes...

Black Cube Marriage is a unique ensemble consisting of legendary Chicago-based cornetist, sound manipulator and improviser Rob Mazurek (Tortoise, Exploding Star Orchestra, Isotope 217 and others), members of his Brazilian connection Sao Paolo Underground, Austin-based freeform unit Marriage and special guests Jonathan Horne (guitar, saxophone) and Steve Jansen (tapes, guitar). Formed in the wake of a couple of Austin, Texas shows in late 2015, this 11-person strong ensemble creates waves of sound that can best be described as cathartic. Astral Cube draws from multiple styles and traditions and the result is a sonic eruption where past, present, north, east, south, organic and electronic collides and is poured into the unknown.

Traces of cosmic jazz – think Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra – appearalongside abstract electronics and heavily manipulated instruments – not unlike Autechre or Matmos. Occasionally the sounds this group is creating conjures mental imagery of flourishing nature, colourful wildlife, flowing mountain streams and ancient rituals – other times the glistening sonic textures evokes images of buzzing urban power lines or technology gone haywire. It’s ceremonial, yet deeply futuristic music. Powerful, unknown, surreal. A sonic outpouring of light an energy. This is post-everything psychedelia at the outer limits of musical possibilities.

A few months ago France synth obsessives Zombie Zombie put out a four track LP originally composed to score a juggling related performance art piece (bloody Frenchies eh?). To the surprise of our Zombies, "Slow Futur" sold out in a matter of days, so they decided to give it a longer lease of life via this red hot remix disc. Opening the set in total darkness is Piccadilly favourite, Kriedler mainstay and Salon Des Amateurs co-founder Tolouse Low Trax. The Dusseldorf man follows up killer releases on Themes For Great Cities and Antinote with a slowly unfolding piece of machine voodoo. Weaving black magic through bleeping keys, African rhythms and industrial toughness, Detlef does his thing, locking us into a hypnotic, glue-sniffing groove from start to finish. Over the other side, I:Cube lends "Hyperspace" a lilting dub flavour via thick bass notes, system twisting fx and lush soundscapes. Fresher than a cool summer evening, this dubby synth redux should play very nicely with anything from the Peaking Lights corner of your collection. Lastly, the legendary Gilb'r provides a percussive reprise, retaining some of that wall shaking dub bass, but adding a whole load of polyrhythmia for a humid, tropical delight.

    STAFF COMMENTS

says: Three production heavyweights step up on a remix tip here, offering very different flips of Zombie Zombie's driving "Hyperspace". Tolouse Low Trax slows things right down for a mindbending exercise in machine voodoo, I:Cube gets deeply dubby and Gilb'r goes round the globe with a totally tropical take on matters.

MMR's debut album, "Fantastic Success" was recorded and mixed by Jonathan Kreinik (Apes, Hot Snakes, Trans Am) at Trans Am's National Recording Studios. "Fantastic Success" nails down MMR's unique sound and features the first recordings with new singer, Chuck Bettis on vocals. 'Takes in everything from Gang of Four funk to Fugazi-esque force, all filtered through a dense haze of shoegaze noise. A fine combination.' - XLR8R Magazine.
