Josephine Foster

Adormidera (Josephine Foster Sings The Songs Of Víctor Herrero)

Josephine Foster is a Colorado-born singer, composer, and lyric poet. A former opera student turned visionary folk experimentalist, she breathes new life into archaic forms. Her music channels the spectral glow the cultural archaeology of Harry Smith's old weird America while conjuring a scrambled past that exists only in her vision. Across 25 years of singular work, Foster plays at the boundaries of psych-folk hymnody, country blues, lieder and avant-song, lending her characteristic mezzo-soprano and interpretive wit to collaborations with fellow underground musicians around the globe.

As homage to her longtime collaborator, Josephine invited Spanish composer Víctor Herrero to curate a selection of his own songs for her voice. Herrero's classical guitar accompanies Josephine's gossamer singing, in compositions that reanimate the lineage of Amancio Prada and Victor Jara.

“If stained glass windows could sing they would sound like Josephine Foster, and her interpretations of the songs of Víctor Herrero are as artful and finely detailed as motes of dust falling through shafts of light in the libraries of your childhood, engrossing in their restraint. Josephine's naked voice an echoing truth in repose against the existential question mark of Víctor’s guitar. In a world that can feel bewildering and relentless, this music is shelter. Adormidera is the sound of a hypnotised mind; the shadow-dance of old souls.”~ Alex Neilson

Linda Perry

Let It Die Here

Linda Perry’s 'Let It Die Here' is a raw, spiritual reckoning, a journey through inherited pain, grief, and redemption. Across seventeen tracks that blend confessional poetry, cinematic rock, and vulnerable introspection, Perry confronts the ghosts of her past — mothers, lovers, and the darker corners of self. The record moves from the streetlight confessions of 'Balboa Park' to the searing surrender of 'Let It Die Here', culminating in “Albatross,” a release from the weight she has carried her whole life. It is an album about release, letting go of guilt, embracing imperfection, and finding beauty in survival.

LØLØ

God Forbid A Girl Spits Out Her Feelings!

The details matter to LØLØ, her songs are littered with the kind of naked confessions that may be hard to blurt out, but provide the ultimate relief, nonetheless

She'll cop to creeping on an ex's social media in one song, only to admit she got so nervous that she hung up on her new infatuation during the next. Unafraid to discuss love, lust, and life without filter, most diaries will never get quite as deep as her lyrics do. All the while, she sonically threads Gen- Z openness into an organic fabric of nineties-spun alternative, attitude-laden rock, and punchy pop.

Guitar in hand, heart on the table, and truth out in the open, the Toronto-born singer and songwriter spikes a cocktail of intoxicating vulnerability with just the right amount of venom on her second full-length LP and Fearless Records debut, 'God Forbid A Girl Spits Out Her Feelings!'

Unbelievable Truth

Almost Here - 2026 Reissue

'Almost Here' is the striking debut from Oxford trio Unbelievable Truth, released in 1998 on Virgin Records.

Formed by vocalist and guitarist Andy Yorke, bassist Jason Moulster and drummer Nigel Powell, the band crafted an album that stood apart from the late-Britpop rush with a sound that was intimate, melodic and emotionally direct.

Critically noted for its cohesion and lyrical sincerity, 'Almost Here' established Unbelievable Truth as a thoughtful counterpoint to the era's louder guitar bands. It remains a focused, atmospheric debut that rewards close listening and highlights a band confident in mood, melody and craft.

Three years after the release of "Volume 1", Innershades returns to home turf with a second entry in his Heritage series. The new beat territory that its predecessor tackled serves as the starting point for the A-side of "Volume 2" as well. The glistening arpeggios and choir patches on "Mind State", alongside the unyielding kicks, alarm-like synth lines and plodding tempo of "System Breakdown," reaffirm how the genre's hallmarks smoothly align with the artist's own inclinations. The B-side draws from the broad spectrum of styles that emerged a bit later, in the beginning of the nineties, when it seemed the dancefloor would move unimpeded between and bridge genres, its boundaries often not as firmly established. "Fuse Memory" nudges the pace forward, driven by the 909 and a staple hypnotic lead. When the drums come to a halt, a 303 emerges to flesh out the break. "Rhythm Composer" continues in a similar early techno vein, but pulls the track into outer space via its formant-heavy leads and Detroit-tinged sci-fi sweeps. On ALT023 Innershades appears in fine fettle, providing another batch of up-front club tracks that approach history as motion rather than memory, translating the past into forward momentum.

BCUC

The Road Is Never Easy

BCUC - Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness - have been channeling the spirit of Soweto for over twenty years.

Indigenous funk, hip-hop consciousness, and punk rock energy fused into something utterly original and deeply rooted - Their mantra: Music for the people, by the people, with the people. From humble beginnings rehearsing in a shipping container, a stone's throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organized the escape of the most wanted anti- Apartheid activists, they kept believing in their dream of selfempowerment. Today they command festival stages worldwide: Glastonbury West Holts, Roskilde, Afropunk Brooklyn, WOMAD, Fusion, Sziget, FMM Sines, Beaches Brew, Boomtown, Colours of Ostrava, Couleur Cafe - to name just a few.

'The Road Is Never Easy' is BCUC's fifth album and their debut on Outhere Records. On this new offering, BCUC take listeners on another Afro- psychedelic journey into the soul of Soweto. It feels like a gospel sermon colliding with a punk concert, "guaranteed to touch untapped corners of your soul" (OkayAfrica). BCUC's music is deeply rooted in history and echoes the voices of the ones who came before. The road was never easy for the people of Soweto who originally came to work in the mines of Egoli, the City of Gold, Johannesburg. When apartheid finally ended after a long struggle, it was hoped that life would improve. But more than 30 years later, many of those initial hopes and dreams are still waiting to be fulfilled. This album is about that struggle.

The album contains 10 brand new songs - a record for BCUC, whose previous albums featured an average of 3 songs. It represents the culmination of more than two decades of performing together and building a reputation as a powerful live act. These ten songs encapsulate that same live energy, each one building gradually and drawing you into BCUC's Afro- psychedelic stream of consciousness. It's a seismic tour de force through life in Soweto today.

Ben is a Detroit-based producer who makes up half of Symptoms of Love, along with BPT records alum Ryan Spencer. He here brings us a 4 tracker of the absolute highest order. It both sounds like music that no one else is making, while also sounding like a pastiche of everything that you've ever liked in the past. The magic formula baby!! Shall we walk thru the music together?

BPT founder and music's #1 man Jeremy Castillo has described the EP absolutely brilliantly as such: "YMO style dissonant electro with a Detroit touch on the a side, with pitched down Patrick Cowley psychedelic Macarena on the B-side.

The A1 and title track is an incredible statement of intent from Ben - it really does sound like if Hosono grew up in Detroit listening to Electrifying Mojo. It's an absolute blast of sunlight coming through your headphones. Press play and watch your vitamin D levels rise!

A2 cut 'Music Remembers' is a groovy joy ride reminiscent of Galaxy II Galaxy, complete with re-pitched vocal chops and 808 claps galore. This will hit SO hard on a spring day if you live in a city currently blanketed in snow.

On the flip, B1 'Whose Water' will be a big hit with anyone who dug Dam Funk's Garret project. Introspective downtempo synth fans rejoice! And we wrap a stellar outing with B2's 'New Sun' - a propulsive cosmic workout that will open up any dancefloor. The psychedelic Macarena is right baby!

Bernard Herrmann

The Curse Of Frankenstein (OST)

Step inside the shadow-drenched world of The Curse of Frankenstein with this definitive soundtrack release from Hammer Films, celebrating the film that launched Hammer Horror and changed cinema forever.

In early 1957, composer James Bernard wrote, orchestrated, and recorded sixteen powerful cues for The Curse of Frankenstein. Created in a remarkably short production window, Bernard’s score became the sonic blueprint for Hammer’s bold new gothic identity. Although all sixteen tracks were used in the finished film, the original session recordings are now lost. During Hammer’s painstaking 2025 4K feature restoration, approximately 13 minutes of clean music were newly extracted from the film’s original mixed music-and-effects track — a rare archival recovery that brings Bernard’s work back from the grave.

For the first time anywhere in the world, this historic music is released on vinyl, presented as four atmospheric suites across two 45rpm 7" EPs. Carefully curated to preserve the dramatic flow of the score, this release allows listeners to experience the chilling intensity, gothic menace and emotional weight that defined Hammer’s Frankenstein.

Steve Hernandez Y Su Orquesta Latinoamericana

The Booga Mambo Beat

Long considered a "Holy Grail" of Latin vinyl, The Booga Mambo Beat (1967) by Steve Hernández y Su Orquesta Latinoamericana returns.

Work Money Death

A Portal To Here

ATA Records are proud to present the new release by Work Money Death, 'A Portal to Here'. This album continues WMD’s exploration of Spiritual Jazz and the sounds and styles that evolved out of the 60s New Thing, particularly the recordings of Alice Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders. The first WMD album released since the tragic death of ATA guitarist Chris Earl Dawkins in early 2025, all four tracks reference the journey that band members and the studio have been on – in many ways this record is a testament and tribute to Chris, his musicality and creativity.

Featuring WMD stalwarts Tony Burkill, Neil Innes, Sam Hobbs, and Sam Bell, the album introduces Sorcerers keyboardist Johnny Richards to the WMD sound. Richards brings a fresh new take to the piano role here, drawing on what is clearly a broad knowledge of jazz history and channelling that through his own unique 21st century musical perspective.

The album also features contributions from Alice Roberts on harp, bringing the spirit of Alice Coltrane, Ben Powling on baritone saxophone, Richard Ormrod on woodwind, and Kev Holbrough & Steve Parry on brass. Those Sun Ra-esque horn sections lift the mood whenever they appear. Standout tracks are the second, 'Dance of the Spirits', with a strong core of Baptism and The Blues and some lovely playing by Richards, and the third track, 'Brother Earl', which begins with Tony on flute over rhythms that are directly reminiscent of open-hearted, late-60s spirituality. Tony later moves to tenor and, as on all four tracks here, eventually builds to the peaks of shattering emotional intensity that fans of Work Money Death - and spiritual jazz in general - love.

Ichiko Aoba

Windswept Adan - 2026 Repress

'Windswept Adan', Aoba’s seventh studio album, was originally released in 2020. Marking a significant departure from her earlier, more solitary works, Aoba collaborated with composer Taro Umebayashi to craft a mesmerising and richly imaginative concept album that moves fluidly between ambient psych-folk, chamber classical, and jazz-inflected composition.

Conceived as the soundtrack to an imaginary film, 'Windswept Adan' follows a young girl exiled from her homeland to the mythic island of Adan — a lush, otherworldly place filled with strange creatures, abundant flora and fauna, and no spoken language. Its orchestral textures and vivid sound design create an immersive, cinematic world.

Roberta Flack

With Her Songs: The Atlantic Albums, 1969-1978

The new Roberta Flack collection, 'WITH HER SONGS: THE ATLANTIC ALBUMS, 1969-1978', is the first retrospective release since the GRAMMY® Award-winning singer passed away in 2025. A celebration of her acclaimed tenure with Atlantic Records, the 8CD set presents newly remastered versions of her first eight studio albums.

'WITH HER SONGS' spans Flack’s Atlantic debut First Take through her self-titled 1978 album, covering a period when she emerged as one of the most commercially and critically successful artists of the 1970s. She was the first solo artist to win the GRAMMY® Award for Record of the Year in consecutive years, for 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' (1973) and 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' (1974). Flack recorded multiple Top 40 hits and sold millions of albums with the label, building a catalog that moved fluidly between soul, jazz, folk, and pop.

'WITH HER SONGS' includes eight newly remastered studio albums: 'FIRST TAKE' (1969), 'CHAPTER TWO' (1970), 'QUIET FIRE' (1971), 'ROBERTA FLACK & DONNY HATHAWAY' (1972), 'KILLING ME SOFTLY' (1973), 'FEEL LIKE MAKIN’ LOVE' (1975), 'BLUE LIGHTS IN THE BASEMENT' (1977), and 'ROBERTA FLACK' (1978).

Together, they chart a sustained period of creative momentum, from the intimacy of 'FIRST TAKE' and 'CHAPTER TWO' to Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, a landmark collaboration that produced the GRAMMY®-winning hits 'Where Is the Love' and 'The Closer I Get to You'. That success continued with her next two albums, 'KILLING ME SOFTLY' and 'FEEL LIKE MAKIN’ LOVE', whose title tracks both went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. More hits followed as her initial run with the label concluded with 'BLUE LIGHTS IN THE BASEMENT' and 'ROBERTA FLACK'.

'WITH HER SONGS' follows renewed activity around Flack’s catalog, including last year’s release of 'KILLING ME SOFTLY' and 'FEEL LIKE MAKIN’ LOVE' in Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio.

Blackwater Holylight

Not Here Not Gone

When Blackwater Holylight left their hometown of Portland, OR three years ago, their mission was to escape the gloom of the Pacific Northwest and the placating comfort of familiarity. Aiming for the sunnier climes of LA, the band found themselves not only in a warmer environment, but in a blank slate landscape—one without jobs, longtime friend groups, and the easy retreat of old habits. And it was here, unencumbered by the contentment of security, that Blackwater Holylight began diligently working on their fourth full-length album, 'Not Here Not Gone'.

As with their previous work, 'Not Here Not Gone' explores the duality of light and dark—menacing riffs provide the bedrock to beguiling melodies; dense walls of shoegaze guitars pair with lighter-than-air synths; and heavy subject matter is delivered by siren song vocals. Across their work, the listener gets a sense of empowerment at one turn, vulnerability the next. As drummer Eliese Dorsay describes it, “some songs we’re the predator, and some songs we’re the prey.” The juxtaposition of confidence and uncertainty is never in as such stark relief as when one makes a life changing decision, which may explain how the band’s relocation intensified their study in contrasts to intoxicating new heights on 'Not Here Not Gone'.

'Not Here Not Gone' was recorded at Sonic Ranch outside of El Paso, TX by Sonny Diperri (Narrow Head, DIIV, Emma Ruth Rundle), allowing the band to once again step outside of their comfort zone and isolate themselves in a place where they could focus exclusively on their art. The result is the crown jewel of Blackwater Holylight’s catalog—a rich and immersive study in tonal chiaroscuro, where light finds its way out of the shadows.

Jackson C. Frank

1975 Mekeel Sessions

For years, Jackson C. Frank was as ghostly a legend as they come. Even the relatively few record collectors who revered his work were only aware of the lone LP released during his lifetime. For all most listeners knew, Frank made an incredible album in 1965 and then vanished, despite that record having been produced by Paul Simon.

'1975 Mekeel Sessions' features six tracks recorded in the mid-’70s at a studio in Lake Hill, New York about five miles from Woodstock where Frank was living at the time. Only uncovered decades later, these recordings hum with the same mysterious warmth that defined Jackson at his peak. His guitar work, alternating between strummed and fingerpicking, is perfectly understated. His stark and somber voice, more weathered than the lighter tone on his debut.

While the Mekeel tapes were intended for Frank’s sophomore album, it never came to be. What one hears is not a singer-songwriter fading out of view, but rather a singular artist who never stopped trying to build his own world—even when no one was watching. For fans of everyone influenced by Jackson: from Nick Drake, Sandy Denny and Bert Jansch to more contemporary acts like Elliott Smith, Vincent Gallo and Iron And Wine who surely used Frank’s sparse approach as a template.

Herbie May

Bleedings / Shoelaces

First single on Red Liquorice Records - the label started by Lounge Society member Herbie May. It's Herbie who contributes two tracks to the label debut (with Lily Rae Grant quickly following up with the 2nd release...).

"Bleedings" is a woozy and laid back song reminiscent of a young (and drunk?) Bill Callahan. The lyrics belie Herbie's young age, as does his intimate mic technique and effortless strumming. Infact the whole track feels like its been birthed completely organically with little manipulation between the song's conception and it's recording. A subtle masterpiece.

"Shoelaces" takes the same stylistic cues - gentle strumming, hushed vocals, transparent production - with Herbie's lyrics again the focal point. You'll want to decipher every word!

Really strong stuff from Red Liquorice - a label to keep an eye on through 2026!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: More magic from the Calderdale valley! We were introduced to Red Liquorice last week with the incredible Lily Rae Grant 7". This is their first release, by label founder Herbie May (from Lounge Society). An equally heartfelt, sincere and warming record with clever lyrics and charismatic guitar playing. I'm already keen to hear a full album by both of these cats (Herbie & Lily)! Defo a label to keep an eye on.

Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter

Forever, I've Been Being Born

'Forever, I’ve Been Born' is Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter’s first new album since 2011’s 'Marble Son', and the band’s 5th since 2002. A suite of masterful folk-rock songs, emotive songs from an open heart, dwelling in a brightness yet deep in the ethereal and melancholic. In the making for ten years, the album centres around the power of Jesse’s incredible voice, which has never been more beautiful, evocative, and hauntingly intimate. Electric guitarist Phil Wandscher’s playing masterfully frames these songs with classic and fractured tones, a duet of vulnerability and strength frequently on the edge.

Doves

So, Here We Are: Best Of Doves

25 years on from the release of their debut album, 'Lost Souls', Doves are proud to present 'So, Here We Are' – a collection of the band’s best, hand-selected from their six studio albums and more.

A compilation that spans a quarter of a century of meticulously fabricated songs of melancholic euphoria from the Manchester trio.

Having last released a ‘Best Of…’ CD compilation, 'The Places Between', in April 2010, following the release of their 2009 fourth album, 'Kingdom Of Rust', all three members of Doves have selected a new collection of tracks to feature on 'So, Here We Are: Best Of Doves'. The first such compilation to be pressed to vinyl, it includes singles, album tracks and rarities spanning their entire 27 year releasing history, a journey which began with their debut Cedar Room EP in November 1998.

The compilation includes the previously unreleased track, "Spirit Of Your Friend".

STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Doves are such a wonderful addition to the Manchester music scene. At the start of their career they even played in our shop and last year we had lead singer Jimi spinning records in his Nightjar incarnation. The band's doomy epicness, heavy with doses of melancholy and magic, has captured our imaginations for nearly three decades! A fitting time for a retrospective then. ‘So, Here We Are’ does not disappoint; all the big hitters are included, along with rarities and a previously unreleased track “Spirit Of Your Friend”.

Just Mustard

WE WERE JUST HERE

On WE WERE JUST HERE, Dundalk, Ireland five-piece Just Mustard surge out of the shadows from the submerged world of Heart Under with a sound that leans toward light and euphoria. Their signature elements remain intact - warped guitars, cavernous low ends, twisted sound design - but this time the noise is channelled into something warmer and more melodic. Inspired by club spaces and physical joy, the songs strive for immediacy and feeling. Katie Ball’s vocals rise higher in the mix, capturing a conflicted pursuit of happiness that she describes as “trying to feel euphoric, but at a cost.”

Produced by the band and mixed by David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Frank Ocean, Caribou) the album expands their emotional palette while keeping things strange, textured, and uniquely their own. WE WERE JUST HERE explodes into technicolor, creating a world that feels immediate, haunted and ecstatic.

The Autumn Defense

Here And Nowhere

After a ten-year break from the studio, The Autumn Defense pick up right where they left off on their long-anticipated sixth album, 'Here and Nowhere'. Infusing the band’s breezy, harmony-drenched take on Laurel Canyon with lush orchestration and psychedelic flourishes, the collection is dreamy and impressionistic, full of warm, inviting tunes as beautiful as they are bittersweet.

Like much of the group’s catalog, it’s an album full of mystery and wonder, a rich, open-hearted work that nods to everything from Nick Drake and John Martyn to Carole King and David Crosby as it contemplates the passage of time, reckoning with what we lose, what we gain, and who we become along the way. Founded by core duo John Stirratt and Pat Sansone—and now featuring longtime rhythm section James Haggerty and Greg Wieczorek—The Autumn Defense first took shape in New Orleans, where the band recorded their 2001 debut, 'The Green Hour'. While the group has at times been pigeonholed as a Wilco side project (Stirratt is a founding member, and Sansone joined around the release of 2004’s A Ghost Is Born), The Autumn Defense’s sound has always been decidedly more West Coast than alt-country, drawing comparisons to The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and Love over the course of five critically acclaimed studio albums. NPR hailed the group’s “timeless pop songs,” while Rolling Stone called their music “gorgeous” and “delightful,” and the New York Times praised their delivery as “warm and radiant.”

Here Comes - 2025 Reissue

Oh My God, Oh My God! This is such a Rare and Beautiful LP. They got her in to make Volume One and never made it to Volume Two (almost a Kim Fowley marketing move). Issued on a micro label in 1955, this wonderfully produced smokey vocal meets hip jazz trio session is quite outstanding. Totally unknown, utterly sublime in parts, don't even try and find an original copy, it will take you at least 20 years and a Japanese man will outbid you just when you think it's yours...so buy it!!

Fabulous Lover

Remember The Future EP - Incl. Pete Herbert & Rayko Remixes

Adam Wise, you may know, is Fabulous Lover and this new record marks his first for Pete Herbert's Music for Swimming Pools. It's a mature mix of 80s-inspired Balearic electro-funk with a tropical twist straight from his Bali studio. This sun-soaked collection bridges sunset vibes and dancefloor energy with 'It's Lonely At The Top' a funky opener with a squelchy bassline and playful riffs. 'Elevate' douses you in 80s synth sounds that glow warm, and label head remixes into a more buoyant Balearic house beat. Elsewhere is the gentle swagger of 'Low Bounce' and lush synth disco buzz of 'Automatic.' Feel-good grooves, for sure.

No One You Know : Dave Rowntree's Early Blur Photos

Drummer Dave Rowntree’s exclusive, intimate, never-seen-before photographs of Blur at the start of their career.

Dave Rowntree, drummer and founder member of Blur, brought his camera along to all of the band’s first adventures. He used it to capture insider moments: close-up and personal pictures of singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and himself in the thrilling early stages of the band’s rise to the top. Here are photographs from Blur’s debut tours of America and Japan, in the studio in the UK, playing games in the tour bus, larking around backstage, messing about in hotel rooms, at video shoots, with fans and friends. A one-of-its kind document of what it’s really like to be in a young band during the vital first few years, when everything is new, romantic and fresh.

With hundreds of previously unseen photographs, a personal foreword and detailed quotes of memories attached to the images, “No One You Know” is a unique visual insight into the first few years of one of Britain’s most successful and well-loved bands, from one of the only four people who knows what it was really like.

Human Leather

Here Comes The Mind, There Goes The Body

Human Leather have always been a ferocious live act, unbelievably loud for a 2 piece.

Their gigs are often an overwhelming wall of sludge, howls and amphetamine-addled drums, with spectators flying joyously around the pit. Previous recordings did full justice to the impact of the live show; however, the second helping is something else.

On Here Comes the Mind, There Goes the Body the sludge is still present, rising, and lapping at your ankles, but there’s a new clarity showing off exactly how f*cking good those riffs are.

There are ear worm riffs for days, shout along vocals that roar, shriek and reform into a Greek chorus, drums that thump you repeatedly in the chest and then the whole thing vanishes in just under 30 minutes, leaving you bruised, deafened and with Some Questions about your life. Squint your ears a bit and you'll hear the influences of bands like Karp, Torche and Big Business but they're thrown into a much crustier stew.

The lyrics span a variety of political issues, not limited to the landed gentry, global warming and consumerist harbingers of doom.

Importantly the songs are also not afraid to discuss class issues (unlike many political bands who you suspect have a much sturdier security net). While this could easily feel preachy, every line is delivered with the knowing wink of the underdog and good humour (I am going to smile every time I think of “clod damn” or "QVC Hands" staring up at me from the lyric sheet), and the vibes are as they’ve always been in difficult times - “we know we’re fucked, tonight we mosh, tomorrow we march”. And what is the point of a revolution you can’t dance to?

Speaking of dancing, the final track features an honest-to-god dance beat, acid squelches and disembodied vocal samples, pointing to an alternative universe in which Human Leather are a heavy electroclash band. Here comes the record of the year, bring what is left of your eardrums. You didn’t need that body anyway.

Echo & The Bunnymen

Heaven Up Here - 2025 Repress

Following the release of their debut album 'Crocodiles' and the subsequent EP 'Shine So Hard', Echo & The Bunnymen returned with their second studio album 'Heaven Up Here'. The album spawned the single 'A Promise' as well as 'Over The Wall' in Australia. The album artwork was shot by frequent collaborator Brian Griffin, on a beach in the South Wales town of Porthcawl and won the Best Dressed LP at the 1981 NME Awards.

Seen as a darker album to their debut 'Crocodiles', the album was well-received by fans and press alike, cementing their cult status in the UK. 'Heaven Up Here' went on to peak at #10 in the UK album charts, being certified Gold in the process, as well as being the band’s first album to chart in the USA. It won the 1981 NME Best Album award and ranks amongst Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

Pharoah Sanders

Love Is Here

Transferred from the original stereo tape reels and mastered by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, these sessions stand as one of the last major unreleased treasures from the golden era of spiritual jazz.

'Love is Here' captures Sanders at a pivotal moment. After parting ways with Impulse! in 1974, he entered a period of reorientation. No longer tethered to label expectations, Sanders embraced full artistic freedom. His performance in Paris reflects a shift from the fiery energy of his early free jazz years to a more spiritual, cosmic voice - without abandoning his raw intensity.

Third Ear Band

Third Ear Band - 2025 Reissue

“For many bands, having all their gear stolen would be catastrophic. For Third Ear Band, this unfortunate 1968 incident opened a portal to beneficial change. Leader/percussionist Glen Sweeney viewed the heist as a sign to alter Third Ear Band’s approach, and they switched to exclusively using acoustic instruments. With electrified psychedelia in full bloom, Sweeney, Paul Minns (oboe, recorder, whistles, flutes) and Richard Coff (violin, viola) struck out on an individualistic path, blending Indian raga with chamber music—without plugging in.

“Third Ear Band’s 1969 debut album, Alchemy, established them as a solemn, powerful force in the global underground. On Alchemy, Sweeney laid down a steady pulse on hand drums, while Minns and Coff wove in melismatic patterns on oboe, recorder, violin and viola. This approach carried over to Third Ear Band’s self-titled sophomore album, often called Elements due to its track titles being named after the four basic components of medieval European alchemists’ doctrines.

“On this 1970 LP, Third Ear Band sounded at once ancient and contemporary, yet they turned on the hippies with their epic, trance-inducing jams that suggested secret knowledge of infinity. Although Third Ear Band flourished during the West’s countercultural zenith, they were peculiarly estranged from it on a sonic level. Even outré contemporaries such as Comus and Jan Dukes De Grey sounded like pop groups compared to TEB. Having no traditional front person or electric instruments, Third Ear Band forged a singular path that flowered most vividly on Elements.

“The long songs here stream forth from their skilled hands, evoking a communal transcendence in sound—a hypnotic swirl that doesn’t swing, but rather wafts and undulates with cloistered beauty. TEB’s music exists in an eternal now, a perpetual wow. It is an ouroboros of organic textures, seemingly magicked into the air spontaneously, yet possessing a rigor that suggests long hours in the lab. Without electricity, it somehow burrowed deeper into your consciousness.”

Errol Brown & The Revolutionaries

Dub Expression - 2025 Reissue

Recorded and mixed at Duke Reid’s storied Treasure Isle studio by Duke’s nephew, young engineer Errol Brown, 'Dub Expression' collects dubbed up treatments of seminal rockers rhythms crafted for Marcia Griffiths, John Holt, Dennis Brown and more.

Propelled by the drums of Lowell “Sly” Dunbar, the appropriately named Revolutionaries (with their tough and radical sound) were the ideal group to reflect a turbulent period in Jamaican politics. While the band’s personnel remained fluid—depending on which players were available and frequently overlapping with other seminal sessions bands such as Joe Gibbs’ The Professionals and Bunny “Striker” Lee’s The Aggrovators—The Revolutionaries were most known as Channel One’s house band in the mid to late ’70s.

The decision to top-bill The Revolutionaries, rather than feature an individual artist as was customary at the time, was made by Kingston’s most celebrated female producer, Sonia Pottinger who shrewdly determined that The Revolutionaries’ name alone would be a can’t miss selling point. One only needs to spend a minute with Dub Expression to hear why.

Originally released in 1978 on Pottinger’s High Note label, 'Dub Expression' represents the essence of dub in its purest form. An absolute classic. Liner notes by JR Gonne.

Horace Andy

Get Wise - 2025 Reissue

With his honeyed falsetto, Horace Andy has long been considered one of roots reggae’s most inimitable voices. His signature tune, 'Skylarking', is one of a handful of songs that can be instantly recognized by even the most casual of reggae fans. Making his debut with producer and mentor Phil Pratt at the age of sixteen, Andy’s expressive vocal style is immediately distinctive, bearing the soulful influence of American artists Otis Redding and Smokey Robinson as well as fellow countryman Alton Ellis.

1975’s 'Get Wise' collects a series of singles produced by Pratt including versions of hits 'Money, Money' ('Root Of All Evil') and 'Zion Gate' ('I Don’t Want To Be Outside'). Recorded between 1972 and 1974, these sides were captured at legendary studios Channel One, Black Ark, Dynamic Sound and Randy’s Studio 17 with house engineers Ernest Hoo Kim, Lee Perry, Carlton Lee and Errol Thompson at the helm.

Originally released on Pratt’s Sunshot label, the album doubles as a showcase for The Soul Syndicate Band, a typically ad-hoc session group which featured Sly & Robbie, Aston “Family Man” Barrett and Earl “Chinna” Smith, among others.

'Get Wise' delivers ten tracks of Andy’s finest material and should be in the collection of any aficionado of the classic ’70s Kingston sound. Liner notes by JR Gonne.

Chastity Belt & 764-Hero

Loaded Painted Red

Chastity Belt's version of "Loaded Painted Red" doesn't just cover 764-Hero's original. It dissolves into it, rebuilding it with a gauzy, wide-open clarity. It's a song that's always carried a certain weight: bruised and echoing with late '90s Pacific Northwest melancholy. In their first-ever recorded cover, Chastity Belt traces that ache into new territory, drawing it out like bated breath.

Lydia Lund threads a new guitar line through the song, tugging it towards their distinct style like a slow orbit around the song's core feeling. "I've been a fan of 764-Hero for a while now, and 'Loaded Painted Red' is one of my faves!" says Julia Shapiro. "It was hard to do the song justice because the original is so perfect, but we also had fun reimagining it and making it our own."

Initially released in 1998 on 764-Hero's Get Here and Stay (Up Records), "Loaded Painted Red" has long been a fan-favorite, a softly jagged and charged meditation. The new split 7" pairs the cover with the original, a full-circle release that marks 764-Hero's catalog joining the Suicide Squeeze family. Together, the two versions collapse decades into a single foggy breath riding out the dusky golden-hour light of the Pacific Northwest.

The Armed

The Future Is Here And Everything Needs To Be Destroyed

The Armed return with their new album The Future Is Here and Everything Needs to Be Destroyed, the follow up to 2023’s critically acclaimed album Perfect Saviors. After completing a trilogy of albums laser-focused on dissecting artistic authenticity in the Information Age, The Armed began work on new material with no premeditated rules or concepts favouring only raw expression and urgency to herald a new era for the project.

What emerged is a furious and confrontational new album—The Future Is Here and Everything Needs to Be Destroyed. Still genre-defying, yet overtly pissed, it's an unfiltered expression of Weltschmerz, the German term describing the anguish of the world’s reality versus our idealized visions of what it should be. “This record rejects sanitized, G-rated rebellion curated for upper middle-class tastes,” vocalist Tony Wolski explains. “It’s music for a statistically wealthy population that somehow can’t afford food or medicine—endlessly scrolling past vacation photos, gym selfies, and images of child amputees in the same feed. It reflects the dissociation required just to exist in that reality.”

The album includes performances by Ken Szymanski, Patrick Shiroishi, Urian Hackney, Kurt Ballou, Troy Van Leeuwen, Meghan O’Neil, Cara Drolshagen, Tony Wolski, Brian Wolski, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Ben Chisholm, Prostitute, Zach Weeks, Mark Guiliana, Kayleigh Goldsworthy, and Derek Coburn.

The Mob

No Doves Fly Here

Punk pioneers Crass continue their vinyl reissue series, re-pressing their limited releases by adjacent artists through Crass Records, in association with One Little Independent. The series, including over twenty bands and solo artists recorded at the legendary Southern Studios and produced by Penny Rimbaud, continues with two more historic pieces from the Crass Records catalogue; The Snipers’ ‘ Three Peace Suite’ & The Mobs’ ‘No Doves Fly Here’.

Recorded over two intense days in September 1981 at Southern Studios, No Doves Fly Here by The Mob stands as a raw, unorthodox moment in anarcho-punk history. Produced by Penny Rimbaud and engineered alongside John Loder, the session saw Crass members and others pitch in — brewing endless pots of strong tea and occasionally manning a four-foot gong hired specially for the track. Mark, frontman of The Mob, recalls recording vocals word-by-word, a painstaking shift from the live takes of their previous releases. The result: a hauntingly deliberate performance unlike anything else on the Crass label. Paired with I Hear You Laughing, a live favorite, the single is a testament to the spirit of experimentation, DIY collaboration, and creative trust that defined the era.

Penny Rimbaud tells us; “Mirroring John and Yoko’s ‘peace not war’ profundities, The Mob’s ‘No Doves Fly Here’ stands out as one of the great classic tracks of the punk era. Profound in its poetics, and poignantly atmospheric in its arrangement, it expresses so much of the hopes and aspirations that later became known as ‘anarcho-punk’ (hitherto the ‘peace movement’). ‘War is over if you want it’, the dream is not over.”

Penny finally notes that “Our (Crass’) interest was never in personalities, profits or power, and neither did we have time for reformist liberals. Our position was solidly revolutionary; we took no prisoners. Ours wasn’t a show, it was a battle, not a living, but a lifestyle, a lifestyle with a difference – rather than looking only to ourselves, we sought to share our gains. I feel that this willingness added great strength to the form of anarchism that we practiced both on stage and out on the street.”

In giving a platform to an impressive array of other bands, Crass Records broadened the front of what popularly became known as anarcho-punk. Not, it must be said, a moniker that Crass themselves much favoured. In this respect, Crass’ classic line, “There is no authority but yourself”, makes its point. Crass sought to empower others, and the output of Crass Records does much to confirm this, while ‘2 By 2 And Back Again’ seems to nail it – “get out of your own way, we’re all in this together”.

Chicago's Peven Everett has long had a cult following for his own unique, live take on House music. The co-producer and vocalist of Gabriel, which was not only one of the most legendary soulful house tracks of the 90’s but also helped define the two step/garage sound. In 2002 he released 'I Can't Believe I Loved Her' on King Street Sounds offshoot label, Nite Grooves, a soulful piece lamenting a love that went wrong. The track was a worldwide hit and quickly earned itself classic status amongst DJ’s and dancers alike. Both the Original and Calypso Mix are featured on this special charity reissue with all proceeds from this release being donated to Peven’s GoFundMe to help with his lung cancer treatment. Essential!

Herbert & Momoko (Matthew Herbert & Momoko Gill)

Clay

A soulful, elastic collaboration, 'Clay' treads nimbly between the dancefloor and the more introspective moods of the early hours, both reminiscent of Herbert’s iconic album 'Around The House' while taking off in a compelling new direction. Agile and open-hearted, 'Clay' is a thrilling, sonically adventurous record from two of the UK’s most forward-thinking artists.

Orbiting around Herbert’s fleet-footed productions and the ingenuity of Momoko Gill’s dexterous, melodic writing, 'Clay' is at once stripped-back and rhythmically complex, drawing on a variety of found sources - from japanese kotos to basketballs - to give the sound an unmistakably organic feel.

Bringing together original sampling techniques, live improvisation and lush, expansive arrangements, 'Clay' is lifted into higher realms by Momoko Gill’s intimate vocal performance, soaring wide-winged across the album’s eleven tracks, whether on the euphoric melancholia of ‘Mowing’ or the emotive duet ‘Heart’.

Prefaced by lead singles ‘Babystar’, ‘Need to Run’ and ‘Someone Like You’, Clay follows the 2024 release of debut collaboration ‘Fallen’ and Momoko Gill’s remix of Matthew Herbert’s ‘The Horse Is Here’. And yet, although 'Clay' marks the first full-length release between Herbert and Gill, the duo’s shared passion for pushing sonic boundaries has played a crucial role in their respective careers to date.

For Herbert that means treating the world as an instrument, making music using everything from the sounds of a bomb exploding in Libya, a horse skeleton, a tank driving over a meal made for Tony Blair, 20,000 dogs, 245 shops and countless other noises. His album 'ONE PIG' – which follows the lifecycle of a pig from birth to plate – remains one of the most ambitious and provocative pieces of electronic music this century, cementing his reputation as an utterly singular composer, artist and producer.

Self-taught in drums and composition, Momoko Gill’s journey to 'Clay' has been similarly experimental – cutting her teeth in South London’s multi-disciplinary music scene, embracing new challenges andcollaborating with the likes of Coby Sey, Tirzah and Alabaster DePlume. Although drums and vocals are her mediums of choice, Gill’s multi-instrumental talents were on full show on 2024’s EP as 'An Alien Called Harmony' with poet/rapper Nadeem Din-Gabisi, and she continues to hone her style in the frictions between genres.

With an intuitive feel for one another’s sound, 'Clay' is a meeting of musical minds that resonates far beyond the sum of its parts - a startlingly fresh, beautifully conceived record from two artists who sound like they’ve been playing together all their lives.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Funky, organic dance music that would be just as comfortable soundtracking the post-club meetup or bouncing heads in the mid-afternoon sunshine terrace. Falling somewhere between mellow house, Balearic and downbeat, the dream collaborative efforts of Herbert & Momoko will hopefully continue beyond this stunning electro-acoustic statement.

Jim O'Rourke

Shutting Down Here - 2025 Reissue

'Shutting Down Here' is a special work. Symbolically, it covers a period of thirty years, between two visits by Jim O’Rourke to the GRM, the first, as a young man fascinated by the institution and his repertoire, the second, as an accomplished musician, influential and imbued with an aura of mystery. Shutting Down Here is a piece shaped like an universe, a heterogeneous world in which collides the multiple musical facets of Jim O’Rourke: instrumental writing, field recordings, electronic textures and cybernetic becomings, dynamic spaces, harmonic spaces, silent spans . This variety of approach, strangely, does not in any way weaken the coherence of the whole and this is the talent of Jim O’Rourke, a talent, properly speaking, of composition, where all the sound elements compete and participate to stakes that exceed them and of a common destiny, that is to say of an apparition.

Aerial Salad

Roi De L’Herbe

Having released their ‘Dirt Mall’ album during lockdown, which was a pretty grim time to put an album out, the release still eventually opened up some exciting doors for the band and captured Aerial Salad at their most Aerial Salad; loud, brash, silly and emotive. This led swiftly to 2024’s ‘R.O.I.’ album that marked a real evolution in the band’s sound and songwriting.

“R.O.I. is a concept album but rather than being about a band, it’s from the perspective of an individual pushed to the brink of insanity by the ever-present quest from commercial success,” explains singer and guitarist Jamie Munro. “The idea came from my job; I’ve been working in the tech industry in ‘sales’. ‘Return on investment’ was probably my most uttered phrase for a few years, I was sick of it, sick of having no positive impact on the world and sick of the tech bro, double espresso, thirsty thursdays, work hard - play hard bollocks culture that comes with it. ‘R.O.I.’ is me saying ‘know what, you can actually earn a lot of money in life, even without the fallacy of educational infrastructure and financial privilege, however, it comes at the cost of your soul, time and energy. ‘R.O.I.’ is called such because it’s in the opposite pursuit, it’s not about a return on a financial investment, it’s about doing something with your life that’s enjoyable.”

This brings us crashing into 2025, no longer in the same line of spirit destroying work, with some seriously exciting gigs on the horizon, Aerial Salad wanted to kick off the next era of the band with a short, fast and hard EP and have served up 5 absolute bangers that sit somewhere between ‘Dirt Mall’ and ‘R.O.I.’ The EP is called ‘Roi de l’herb’ because of the track ‘King Of The Grass’: “We tour and play a lot in France, we’ve played most of our “best” gigs in France, so out of curiosity I wanted to see if the title would translate well, naturally, when the translation contained both “ROI” and l’herbe” - I though, fuck it, that’s about as spot on a title for this EP as we can possibly muster.”

‘King of The Grass’ is about the band’s bassist Mike Wimbo who works for Rochdale council on the greens team, which means he spends his life in the pouring rain chopping down overgrown hedges and mowing lawns. Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Inject Your Blood’ is another romantic love song inspired by the TV series ‘True Blood’ (“I’d inject your blood, into mine just to feel you close”), ‘Wires’ rages against the world of AI and GPT, whilst the EP’s opening track ‘My Girl’ is a chaotic, high energy catchy punk song, nothing profound, nothing complicated. It’s a punk song as god intended, a few chords and a load of shouting.

“The EP is like the teaser for what’s next,” summarises Jamie. “The overall hook for this EP is one of hope, that by sticking to what you believe in you can do anything.”

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Snappy, fuzzed-out guitars and roaring grungey progressions and athletic galloping percussives beneath those perfectly pitched but melodically unfussy lyrical barrages. A wonderfully visceral, but enlessly melodic jaunt through garage, punk and indie grooves.

Her’s

Songs Of Her’s - 2025 Repress

Many bands promising uniqueness write a bum cheque. Her’s, not only offer individuality, distinctiveness and originality, but an entire world brimming with fully realised characters and sounds. Where romance fades, bromance remains and like a pair of matching monogrammed bathrobes hanging side-by-side, it’s rare to find a partnership so loveably kitsch and destined to belong together as Stephen and Audun. Stories and characters emerge throughout the collection, revealing an off-kilter world of atmospheric slacker pop, instilled with voyeuristic humour. A collection of all their early singles, and a few new tracks thrown in for good measure, Her’s channel the surreal and the sublime through a twist of tropical technicolour. Each song its own little microcosm of oddness. Intricately windy, bendy guitars are flung around a tight drum machine clatter to deliver a genuine indie classic.

Her's

Invitation To Her’s - 2025 Repress

One of the most free spirited and inspired indie rock debuts our island has seen for a while, Her’s had seemingly AAA backstage access to styles and eras that made home in their mutant retro-futurist sound. There was always something instantly charismatic about Stephen and Audun which proved pivotal in shooting their jangly, oddball pop into the major leagues. Luminous guitar lines, tremulous dissonant vocals and an arsenal of gorgeous melodies, the collection tilts from rock to bossa nova, surf to garage, 50s ballad to indie classic. Through laughter and art, Her’s take us away from the strife of everyday life and into a world that’s a surreal reflection of our own, built from the detritus of novelty items in junk shops, bargain bin b-movies and late-night cop shows. Under the facade and strange world of characters and humour there lies a deeper undercurrent, this approach is one of the subtle reasons Her’s stand apart and through this vehicle their messages still have the potential to shift perceptions.

Jess Kerber

From Way Down Here

Nashville’s Jess Kerber first picked up a guitar at the age of 12, and her precocious drive to experiment with different tunings and picking styles – influenced by kindred spirits like Joni Mitchell and Susan Tedeschi – led to the development of a unique sonic palette and authentic, personal approach to songwriting. Inspired equally by her upbringing in Louisiana and studies at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, debut album 'From Way Down Here' highlights the dynamism and depth of her gorgeous voice and thoughtful, humanistic lyrics, as well as the refined intricacy of her guitar playing.

While developing many of these compositions at early live performances in and around Boston and Cambridge, Kerber encountered fellow songwriter Will Orchard, who quickly became a partner and collaborator in the genesis of their recording. Orchard’s production prowess and multi-instrumental talents push Kerber’s arrangements to a new level of fullness, while retaining the disarming purity and emotion of the main elements, in a dynamic akin to that of renowned contemporaries Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Nodding to the traditions of Americana, the two artists – along with mixing engineer Charlie Dahlke of The Brazen Youth – have created their own subgenre that is at once intimate and universal, comforting and raw.

Across the album, Kerber’s rich, velvety tenor assumes a deep tenderness and warmth, while varying arrangements of pedal steel, Wurlitzer, drums, and ambient guitar create the surrounding shimmer. The influence of her upbringing – and what she lovingly calls the “way apart from the rest of the world feeling” of the Deep South – shines through in the honest, straightforward, and timeless qualities of her composition. About her process, Kerber notes, “The most important thing is to lean into intuition, and when I was working with Will on these songs, it was so much fun that I almost forgot we were making a record.” Fittingly, 'From Way Down Here' is the rare debut that shows all the fully-formed hallmarks of a seasoned songwriter, and across its varied environments, she constructs a compelling world of raw beauty and truth, whose spell remains long after the final notes fade.

The Wandering Hearts

Déjà Vu (We Have All Been Here Before)

The Wandering Hearts are a British Americana-Folk band known for their enchanting harmonies and heartfelt songwriting, influenced by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and have a similar sound to The Lumineers and First Aid Kit. Their new album, 'Déjà Vu (We’ve All Been Here Before)', is a beautiful re-work of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1970 hit album of the same name.

Recorded in one week in Joshua Tree, Taurus Rising Studios, this isn’t an album out to besmirch the original, but to become a loving companion without being an overly reverential copy. With a band as distinctive and exciting as The Wandering Hearts, a note-for-note facsimile was never an option. One listen to how The Wandering Hearts have taken 'Déjà Vu’s ten songs to new places and reimagined them over 50 years later, and it’s clear this is a very bold, very new work by one of Britain’s most accomplished Americana artists.

Ajay Saggar has been making music under the moniker Bhajan Bhoy for the last 5 years, releasing several albums and touring around the globe. As a member of both Water Damage and CHELA, he appeared on 3 consecutive nights at Le Guess Who? festival in November 2024. Bhajan Bhoy’s music “plough a peak time psychedelic furrow; from lazy interstellar ragas to lysergic dance music, mellow psychedelic rock and all sorts of kosmische mutations” (The Slow Music Movement).

“Summer In St. Mary’s” is an album of beautiful and highly meditative and minimalist compositions with repetitive motifs, played on a 19th century church organ in the 15th century church of St. Mary’s in the small village of South Cowton in North Yorkshire (U.K.).

It’s an incredibly beautiful church with a rich history. Built in the 1450s by Sir Richard Conyers (who also built his castle on the hill opposite), this handsome church, like the castle, is sturdy in character. Inside the church are the alabaster effigies of Sir Richard Conyers and his two wives. The church is unused but maintained by the the Churches Conservation Trust. Inside is a church organ built by the The Packard Company, who were based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. I dated this particular organ by finding the serial number that had been scratched into the back of the organ, and via a wonderful website setup by a fan of the organ company, could see that it was built somewhere between 1896 - 1898!

I discovered the church in the summer of 2022, whilst on a visit, that summer, to unusual buildings in North Yorkshire with my mum. I saw the organ tucked away in a corner and immediately was drawn to playing it, and heard the amazing sound that emanated from it, and the seeds of an idea to record on it were sown. Over two long days in the summer of 2023, I composed and recorded a number of long compositions. Spending those long hours in the church gave me a stereophonic impression of the auditory surround. Inspired by the “natural musics” of the house’s structure (its acoustics, creaks, wind blowing through the wooden doors and room tone) and the history of it (stain glass windows, effigies of Sir Richard Conyers and his two wives, Latin inscription above the doors), I fell into a spell of playing music in a very open and free manner for many hours that, within the confines of this very special building, felt transcendent and astral.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Eschewing Bhajan Bhoy's usual widescreen psychedelic fare somewhat for an entirely minimalistic sound palatte seems like it could easily sacrifice some of BB's usual seismic intensity, but 'Summer In St. Mary's' is a completely absorbing, dizzying wonder.

Matt Maltese

Hers

Matt Maltese's sixth studio album is his most insular and intimate to date, and his first fully self produced effort since second album 'Krystal'. 'Hers' exists in a twilight world, pairing heartfelt songwriting and dry witticism with the gentle quiver of strings, a flourish of woodwind or the sound of a creaking old piano.

Though its wounds may still feel tender to the touch, Maltese made 'Hers' with several years’ perspective on the events that inspired it, processing the complexities of a serious romantic relationship and its ending through the rearview.

Mclusky

The World Is Still Here And So Are We

The heralded UK band’s first album since 2004 and first for Ipecac Recordings.

Having formed in the late nineteen-nineties and releasing music, if that is what it was, from 2000-2004, Mclusky disbanded soon afterwards in a slow motion farce of not enough drama to get much press off the back of it. Now they are back fuelled initially by spite but now enjoying it too much not to do it, and playing to crowds in the UK, US and Australia which are much bigger - and more hygienically inclined - than in their so-called heyday. So far nobody has complained, except for one guy in Leeds (and he was clearly on ketamine). They are writing a new album - entitled 'the world is still here and so are we' due for release in may 2025.

Split Dogs

Here To Destroy

Rock’n’roll revivalists Split Dogs are not here to make 15 second viral videos, they’re not here to sell you a lifestyle, they’re here to destroy. Born from the frustration of seeing music become commodified and soulless, vocalist Harry Atkins and guitarist Mil Martinez had the idea to form a band as far back as 2015, with the name ‘Split Dogs’ pulled from the classic zombie film ‘Return of the Living Dead’.

In South London, a young Martinez would hear Status Quo, Bachman Turner Overdrive and Dire Straits on the car radio while his father drove him to school. At home he would invade his older brothers’ record collection which leaned towards the harder sounds of punk and heavy metal. Meanwhile in the Black Country, Harry’s mother instilled a love of Northern Soul, Slade and rock’n’roll, with stories of nights out at Club Lafayette and family singalongs at home. According to Martinez, “Our sound is a culmination of all those early influences and, to be honest, it really shows.” It wasn’t until 2022 that Split Dogs officially arrived on the scene with bass player Suez Boyle joining the band in 2023. Already a prominent figure in the queer punk scene, Suez played the first ever Rebellion Festival at the tender age of 16 with her band The Walking Abortions. Up until that point, drummer Chris Hugall, an old friend of Martinez and former member of ska punks Mouthwash (signed to Rancid’s label Hellcat back in the day), was only on hand to help design artwork. It wasn’t until 2024 Hugall joined the band full time, cementing the current line-up.

The raucous live shows and infectious lyrics saw the four-piece make a name for themselves among the punks of Bristol, a scene that has always welcomed LGBTQ+ and marginalised people. As word spread, so did the gigging, and soon enough Split Dogs were playing to sold out rooms in mainland Europe, eventually grabbing the attention of UK label Venn Records (Gallows, Bob Vylan, High Vis). ‘Here to Destroy’ was recorded over three days at Middle Farm Studios by producer Peter Miles. All tracks were laid straight to a 16 track reel-to-reel tape machine, no autotune, no effects pedals, no computers. To add to the music’s authenticity, the album was recorded live, with Harry singing along in a vocal booth. No cutting and pasting, just nailing takes. According to Martinez, “It was a blast! We fully immersed ourselves, sleeping in a small apartment below the studio, cooking meals and listening to Pete’s extensive record collection”. While the final result is a step away from Split Dogs early punk sound, the attitude is still there in droves. “We wanted the album to have a raw bones feel,” Martinez tells us, “real 1970s rock’n’roll!”. Harry channels the spirit of Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister as they tear through hook after hook, singing about the Northern Soul clubs their mother once frequented (‘Lafayette’), the Orwellian nightmare we’re heading for ('Stay Tuned') and a touching homage to British working class culture ('And What?'). As the album title makes clear, Split Dogs are here to destroy, but they’re also here to rebuild and remind us of music’s essence. “We’re not beholden to the digital age, we don’t want to get famous on social media, we just want to show the world that rock’n’roll is alive

Stephen Hero

Convalesence

"In the drear of Covid I was drawn back to the memory of the AIDs pandemic of the 1980/90s which, in comparison, was invisible and unimportant to governments and most people. No restrictions or lockdowns back then, instead mockery and the threat of prison islands. Having been perceived as high risk in both situations, and weirdly not having died in either, I felt like I had cheated the odds. And I needed a lie down.

In the studio the old sounds of loud electric guitar, ping pong delays, juddery reverbs summoned me back. Piano songs shifted from the baroque acoustics of my previous record Deciduous Eccentric (2019), swooping back thirty years to the days of Kitchens of Distinction. Smudged saw tooth rock, sprinkled with a light icing of gaze, and smothered in the usual sour voice looking for answers, only to find phantasms, map rooms, breathing apparatuses, exorcists.

In bed, the dreams and memories commingled. In bed the old writers languished: Marcel Proust wheezing his asthmatic way through tiresome exquisiteness, Truman Capote driving his pencil through the heart of those he loved. The names of hateful viruses, the names of the1980sdead(what if they hadn't died? what then?),the emergence of an elderly minotaur, blind from years in his maze, brought out to graze the fields and ponder. What the fuck was all that illness and dying about? Sighing with Hans Castorp up the Magic Mountain, where time stagnates, where life limps along, where winter is endless, and each day an empty bed fresh for the next ghost. Imagine us gone. Yet somehow we live. It's quite the task. Time for a lie down. Time to recuperate. A convalescence."

Patrick Fitzgerald, Swiss born, Irish bred, Manchester schooled, London educated, has been making records since the 1980s, notably as singer and bassist in sort- ofshoegaze band Kitchens of Distinction. Since then he has released six solo albums as Stephen Hero, one as Fruit in 1997, and worked with Heidi Berry (Lost Girls), Paul Frederick of The Family Cat (The April Seven), and Yves Altana (Oskar's Drum). This latest album was made at home in his home studio by himself. He thought he had retired from music, but it turned out he had retired instead from a parallel career of working in medicine.

Tanika Charles

Don't Like You Anymore / Here When You're Ready

Produced by Scott McCannell and mixed by Kelly Finnigan of Monophonics, Record Kicks presents two brand new single from Canadian rising soul star Tanika Charles on limited edition clear 45 vinyl. 'Don’t Like You Anymore' and 'Here When You’re Ready' are taken from the highly anticipated new album 'Reasons To Stay' from the Twice JUNO nominated and two time Polaris Prize listed, Tanika Charles. On the A side 'Don't Like You Anymore' is a mid tempo gospel funk stormer able to set the dancefloor on fire. With its boom bap smacked drums and chunky basslines, it will not be a surprise if rap/hip hop artists will get on it to sample the song. The B side 'Here When You’re Ready' is an equally strong mid tempo soul number that makes this limited edition 45 vinyl a real double sider. Canadian Soul/R&B powerhouse Tanika Charles in a few years has transformed from an emerging solo artist to a commanding performer and bandleader, a staple in the Canadian soul scene. The success of her three studio album 'Soul Run' (2017), 'The Gumption' (2019) and 'Papillon De Nuit' (2022) propelled Tanika in front of new audiences far and wide, with extensive touring in North America and Europe where she performed at Trans Musicales Festival in France, the Lärz, Germany Fusion Festival, Mostly Funk & Soul Festival and Jazz Festival in UK, the Holy Groove Festival in Switzerland, and the Canarias Jazz Festival in Spain just to name a few. Her touring career has also seen her supporting the likes of Estelle, Mayer Hawthorne, Haitus Kayote, Lauryn Hill, Bendouin Soundclash and Macy Gray.

Herman Kelly & Life

Percussion Explosion! - 2025 Reissue

Immortalised in hip-hop folklore, when the anthemic 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat' was featured on the influential Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation series in 1986.

Percussion Explosion! was the brainchild of drummer, percussionist, producer and arranger, Herman Kelly and his percussive disco- funk group from Miami, 'Life', that featured Aaron McCarthy, Oliver Well, John DeMonica, Michal Cordoza and Travis Biggs. The album houses a collection of disco, funk and Latin-inspired cuts that were destined for greatness. Nestled within the grooves is the B-Boy and B-Girl's anthem, 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat', which contains a now legendary break. A cursory glance at Whosampled will show that it has been sampled in over 125+ songs. These include Double Dee & Steinski on their groundbreaking 1985 production 'Lesson 3 (History Of Hip Hop Mix)', as well as by DJ Shadow, N.W.A, Masters At Work, Run D.M.C. and a whole host of heavyweights across hip-hop, dance and pop music.

When the album was released in 1978 it came out on two different labels, Alston Records and Electric Cat. Each label pressed different versions of 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat', with the former featuring a 4:12 version and the latter a longer 5:09 version that has a different structure, crowd noise at the start and overdubbed percussion.

For this Mr Bongo reissue, we have chosen the classic 4:12 version from the Alston Records release, which would later find its way on to the illustrious Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation. To make matters even more confusing the Alston version art on the back cover also states the track length as 5:09, whilst the centre label lists it correctly as 4:12.

Aside from the much celebrated 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat', the album includes a range of other fantastic overlooked cuts. From the percussive soul stepper 'Share Your Love', to the beautiful Latin-flavoured 'A Refreshing Love' or the party disco-funk groover 'Who's The Funky D.J.?'.

This wonderful and inspirational record features an important piece of hip- hop heritage and deserves a place in every collection.

The Japanese singer, songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, has taken a dedicated online fanbase built from TikTok sounds and critically acclaimed, and translated that into international tours spanning more than 20 countries. She was well known in Japan—collaborating with artists like Haruomi Hosono, Cornelius, and the late Ryuichi Sakamoto—but Windswept Adan earned the adoration of fellow musicians like Japanese Breakfast, Pomme and Weyes Blood. Dub Syndicate

Out Here On The Perimeter 1989-1996

A follow-up to the 'Ambience In Dub' set that anthologised the early Dub Syndicate albums, 'Out Here On The Perimeter 1989-1996' picks up the story in the late 1980s with Style Scott coming more to the forefront of the project as bandleader and co-producer, and the group emerging as a live entity, mirroring the trajectory of Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah of labelmates African Head Charge.

This was also the period of their greatest popularity, with a classic series of albums that combined the best of Jamaican musicianship and the wild studio experimentation of UK production maverick Adrian Sherwood, resulting in music that appealed to ravers and dreads alike. Sherwood has also concocted a special bonus album of brand new version excursions on rhythms from the period.

This box set includes four albums from that period, plus 'Obscured By Version' - an album of new productions based on classic Dub Syndicate Rhythms.

Mama Terra

Chameleons (Live Interpretations Of Herbie Hancock)

Following their acclaimed debut ‘The Summoned’ on Acid Jazz in 2023, Mama Terra return with a new album - ‘Chameleons: Live Interpretations of Herbie Hancock’.

The album recasts Hancock’s iconic works in a new, live setting, as a basis for both homage and exploration, with ‘Headhunters’ being a prime influence for leader Marco Cafolla.

The album grew out of Jazz FM’s ‘Classic Albums’ series, and was recorded live at the Glasgow International Jazz Festival in June 2024. The performance demonstrates the prowess of Mama Terra as a live outfit.

Led by Marco Cafolla (Keyboards), musicians include Konrad Wiszniewski (Tenor Sax), Rachel Lightbody (Vocals), Ross David Saunders (Upright Bass + Mix Engineer) & Doug Hough (Drums).

Known for their fresh and invigorated take on spiritual jazz, with soul and R&B influences, Mama Terra showcased at the 2024 SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, alongside a host of festival and jazz club appearances. ‘Chameleons’ shows a band in ascendency.

HONESTY

U R HERE

HONESTY is not a band in the traditional sense. With four core members - George Mitchell, Matt Peel, Josh Lewis and Imi Marston – and a rotating cast of collaborators which have included musicians and visual artists like Kosi Tydes, Softlizard, Rarelyalways, Florence Shaw, and Liam Bailey, the Leeds-based collective emerged as an exercise in doing things differently on a journey towards self-acceptance.

With influences that range from Mount Kimbie and My Bloody Valentine to Björk and Burial, ‘U R HERE’ represents a renewed sense of creative expression amidst a world that can sometimes seem like it's crumbling apart.

The songs on ‘U R HERE’ are a fluid, exhilarating, and uniquely introspective take on club music – sonically mapping the psychological impact of the modern age and harnessing the vitality and freedom that comes with new beginnings. 'U R HERE', right now, and that is all that matters.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A dynamic and fascinating fusion of propulsive club beats and churning modern bass beneath lysergic synth blips and shadowy, strained vocals. There are moments here that sound like Actress much like there are moments that could easily be on an LCD album, and all of them are faultlessly integrated and beautifully performed. Brilliant.

Songhoy Blues

Héritage

From the first listening to 'Héritage', the much-awaited fourth album by Songhoy Blues, it is clear that the 4-piece rock band from northern Mali are in a new frame of mind. With 'Héritage', they move into a more acoustic, creative re-imagining of the “desert blues” style that has brought them to world fame.

The Songhoy are an ethnicity living along the bend of the Niger river in northern Mali (their language is Songhai, hence the two spellings that are often used interchangeably). Songhoy music is one of the backbones of the “desert blues” sound. Songhoy Blues pay tribute to some of the great musicians of the past, whose work continues to inspire them, giving ‘a big thank you to the ancestors who bequeathed works of art so that future generations could orient themselves’.

Charismatic, articulate and creative, the band burst onto the scene in 2013 with a powerful style and stage manner once described as “Timbuktu Punk”. Their songs deal with issues of life and love in Mali, and are based on five-note scales, rock rhythms, gritty vocals, and glittering guitar. These elements are ever present in their new album Héritage, but with a more intimate groove laced with other sounds from different ethnic traditions from around the country. Migration and forced displacement bring new perspectives to the notion of heritage in their music.

'Héritage' was recorded in the Remote Records Studio and Studio Moffou in Bamako, with producer Paul Chandler, and draws on the remarkable wealth of musical talent in the city. The album presents new compositions and reworkings of old classics. It is infused with the ethereal sounds of various traditional instruments, all in the hands of great Malian masters.

'Héritage' is compulsive listening for Songhoy Blues’ fans – at home and abroad - and more widely, fans of desert blues, rock, or just good music.

The Legendary Beyons

Dreaming You Were In My Mind / There We Were, Here We Are

Somewhat incredibly, this four-piece vocal Soul act are still performing today after 56 years of harmonising, without anything they recorded achieving a physical release until a few years ago. What began as four guys singing together for fun after basketball practice in Portland, took until early 1977 to realise as actual recordings – and that lone tape of four original songs lay unreleased until 2020. From that set we've pulled a bright and lively gem ripe for plays on the Modern Soul scene, backed with stunning, polished slow-jam.

First time ever on 7" 45rpm vinyl, dinked centre hole with picture sleeve, 500 numbered copies only.

Indian Pale Male

Dance Of The Red Herrings

Debut solo record from Manchester based writer Nathan McIlroy, formerly of Frazer King.

The record is produced by Jim Noir and his sonic fingerprints sculpt the raw materials into a weird pop opus. Noir is also releasing the record on his Dook Recordings label and played drums and vocals on several tracks.

Recorded by McIlroy’s long-time friend and musical associate, Big A, the songs are laden with cracked harmonies and homemade instruments, including found materials used as percussion. The pair drew on the talents of fellow travellers for backing vocals and rhythm tracks which has resulted in the live outfit expanding to a three piece, with Ben Price (bass) and Charlie Garson (drums) on board.

Commenting on the writing process McIlroy explains:
“It was written during a period of madness and adverse offending behaviours. The songs dash from one theme to another and reflect the mistaken beliefs we cling to when our perceived realities are threatened. It’s also got jokes.”

Opposing a streaming culture that values top tracks and playlists, the record is intended to be heard in one sitting, with Side A showcasing more extroverted songs, in all their loudmouth braggadocio, and Side B being more introspective and honest.

US House Music legend Teddy Douglas of Basement Boys and Jasper St. Co. fame gets set to unleash his first solo artist album, ‘I’m Here’, on the iconic label, Nervous Records. Teddy has gone all out to deliver one of his most creative and musically diverse albums to date. ‘I’m Here’ is a colourful pallet of meaningful songs and grooves that reach far beyond Teddy’s signature soulful Baltimore House sound, with added infusions of Funk, Rock and Jazz, yet still loaded with plenty of Teddy’s trademark House and Disco sounds that we all know and love.

Across the album he’s pulled together an array of heavyweight international vocal talent including; UK vocal diva Pauline Taylor; Danish award winning Folk and Blues artist, Richard Farrell; Chi Town Hip House legend, Fast Eddie; dance music’s legendary No.1 vocal queen, Ultra Naté; up and coming Brit Soul talent, Sipho; and Buckshot from Blackmoon appearing as BDI Thug. From the shimmering cover of The Frontline Orchestra’s ‘Don’t Turn Your Back On Me’ with Pauline Taylor on the vocals, to the downtempo rocky vibes of ‘Help!’ with Sipho delivering a spine-tingling gravelly vocal, ‘I’m Here’ is testament to Teddy’s finely tuned expert musicianship and impeccable knack for penning great songs and delivering vibrant covers.

Baltimore’s Teddy Douglas has produced everyone from Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Crystal Waters, Erykah Badu, Martha Wash and Ultra Nate’ and was an important figure in the development of the Baltimore “House” Sound. Teddy has held down a long and successful DJ career since 1983 staring out in Baltimore and spreading his wings globally gracing the decks at clubs such as Yellow in Japan to London’s Ministry of Sound and beyond. In 1985 he met Jay Steinhour and Thommy Davis, who later formed The Basement Boys production company. The Basement Boys have produced countless dance classics like Crystal Waters’ 1991 Gold single, ‘Gypsy Woman’. In the mid 90’s Teddy Douglas and Jay Steinhour opened Basement Boys Records and released club anthems from Teddy Douglas, Jasper St. Co., Ann Nesby, Those Guys, DJ Spen, Byron Stingly, Karizma, Kenny Bobien, Taja Seville and more

Lisa Marie Presley & Riley Keough

From Here To The Great Unknown: A Memoir

Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough. In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-conceived memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words; never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and grieved.

Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story: about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland; about the unconditional love she felt from her father; about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran towards his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble.

About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, and about being married to Michael Jackson, and what they had in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction.

About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world. To make her mother known.

This extraordinary book is composed of both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voices, a mother and daughter communicating across the chasm of life and death as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other – the last words of the only child of a true legend.

Tomorrow’s Here Today celebrated 35 Year of Lightning Seeds. It’s an absolute masterclass in modern pop songwriting from Ian Broudie. Across 20 tracks the LP features Lightning Seeds favourites including ‘The Life Of Riley’, ‘Change’, ‘Lucky You’, ‘Sense’, ‘All I Want’, ‘Sugar Coated Iceberg’, ‘You Showed Me’, ‘3 Lions’ and more.

Ian Broudie

Tomorrow's Here Today : Lightning Seeds, Football And Cosmic Post-Punk

'One of the greatest rock 'n' roll stories of the past 50 years recounted with warmth and wisdom' - Hot PressFew musicians have lived a musical life as rich as the songwriter and producer Ian Broudie. From recording the glorious uplifting psychedelic pop of his band The Lightning Seeds to producing bands like Echo & The Bunnymen and The Fall, Ian has journeyed from the energy and potential of the 1970s punk scene to the madness of '90s indie - and out the other side. Throughout nearly fifty years of making music, he has had a front-row seat working with generations of fantastic musicians in the creation of countless groundbreaking records. In Tomorrow's Here Today, he reveals what he has learnt about creativity, how to work with musicians touched by genius and what it is like to stumble through an exploding industry without losing sight of your dreams. Along the way, Ian shares how he wrote the million-selling album Jollification and how - along with the comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner - he wrote and recorded the only single in chart history to reach number one in the UK on four separate occasions. 'Three Lions' has since become the undisputed unofficial anthem of English football, soundtracking heartbreaking defeats as well as the wondrous victories of the Lionesses. Following 2022's long-awaited Lightning Seeds comeback, Ian reflects on a life of cosmic adventures spent in thrall to the power of music.

Good Looks

Lived Here For A While

Good Looks follow-up the Americana sound of Bummer Year for this sophomore follow-up of clanging post-punk guitars and expansive indie rock, exploring how a home can become unrecognizable.

Good Looks write kind hearted and cathartic rock songs about the persistence required to make it through hard times. In April 2022, the Austin, Texas quartet released their critically acclaimed debut ‘Bummer Year’. Immediately after their triumphant hometown record release show, lead guitarist Jake Ames was hit by a car crossing the street, fracturing his skull and tailbone. Thankfully, Ames made a full recovery. The traumatic accident strengthened the bond that built their electric new album ‘Lived Here For A While’. Out via Keeled Scales, it’s fearlessly direct music that captures the full-throated intensity of their galvanizing live show.

Reinvigorated, Good Looks tracked ‘Lived Here for a While’ at Texas’ Dandy Sounds with producer/engineer Dan Duszynski (of Loma and Cross Record) the following summer. Though Ames had to relearn some of his parts, his palpably energetic performances elevated the entire record.

On the LP, the band trades the Americana sound that coloured in the lines of ‘Bummer Year’ for clanging post-punk guitars and expansive indie rock. Lyrically, the songs on this album are healing meditations on family dysfunction, new relationships, and how a home can become unrecognizable. Lyricist Tyler Jordan’s songs explore how relationships can crumble irrevocably but also how those partnerships can be centering, hopeful, and exciting.

In another horrific accident in July 2023, their tour van was rearended by a speeding car, causing their van, instruments, merch, and records, to go up in flames. Thankfully, none of the band members suffered serious injuries. This resilience is essential to Good Looks and why the songs on ‘Lived Here For A While’ resonate so profoundly.

The Modulations

It's Rough Out Here - 2024 Reissue

The singles received considerable airplay and managed to chart on Billboard’s R&B single chart. The Modulations recorded extensively with MFSB, the house band of the famed record label Philadelphia International. These sessions yielded to this album, which is considered a gem of 1970s soul music. The group reached the pinnacle of its career with an appearance on Don Cornelius’ popular TV show Soul Train in 1976.

Since releasing her joint LP 'These Days' with long-time friend and collaborator Daniel Casimir on the jazz re:freshed imprint in 2019, Hirst has been working on her first solo album scheduled for release in early-2024. Funded by PRS Foundation's Women Make Music and the MOBO Help Musicians Fund, Hirst's new music is set to be a jazz re:freshed family affair. 'Magic' features Richard Spaven on drums, Sarah Tandy on piano and Tomorrow's Warriors StringTing. It is produced and arranged by Casimir who also plays electric, upright and synth bass on the recording.

A celebration of inspiring stories of the women around her, 'Magic' pays homage to their robust capacity to rise to any challenge, including motherhood, a journey which Hirst embarked upon herself, making the track all the more poignant. As Hirst shares: "Since having my own child in between writing and releasing this record, I've realised motherhood itself isn't magic, rather there is magic in being a mother. Performing 'Magic' now brings a deeper level of understanding for me. When you give birth to a child you too are reborn." Hirst urges listeners to invoke their own sense of magic, underpinned by the notoriously underground UK musical heritage ofDrum'n'Bass, Spaven fully in his element, piercing through the pensive string melodies and euphoric harmonies overarching Hirst's ethereal tone.

Hirst and award-winning bassist Casimir released their debut album 'These Days' in 2019, described as'a masterpiece' by The Wicked SoundandCLASH as 'deft and soulful'andsupported by Jazzwise and Jazz FM. In 2022, Hirst appeared in the AppletonEstate Jamaica Jazz Sessions, recorded a live session at Abbey Road Studios and produced the jazz re:freshed OuternationalShowcase at SXSW, adding a string of successful podcasts to her bow for Afropop and Manchester Jazz Festival. Earlier this year, Tess shared the first glimpse of her new material at Brick Lane Jazz Festival.

Herald

Linear B

Linear B is the 25-year delayed debut album from Herald, aka Lawrence Worthington (The Male Nurse, Country Teasers, Yummy Fur). 10 Neo-psychedelic alt-pop gems co-produced with Deakin (Animal Collective).

Lawrence played drums throughout the 1990’s with The Male Nurse, Country Teasers and Yummy Fur, recording several Peel sessions and touring extensively. During this period he began writing songs for a potential solo record. Adopting the name Herald, he played one show and featured on a Vesuvius Records compilation, before relocating to Baltimore MD in 2001 for love.

The move resulted in a musical hiatus as life’s focus switched to marriage and a career as a carpenter. In 2012, while helping build a recording studio, Lawrence met several people involved in the vibrant local music scene. Inspired by these new relationships and spurred on by a few close friends, he gathered the same equipment he had in the 90’s - cheap Casios and Yamahas mostly - and set it up in his basement.

Around this time Lawrence was introduced to Josh Dibb (Deakin, Animal Collective) who was back in town while the band took a break from touring. They worked together on carpentry projects, bonding over a shared love of music like The Residents, Forever Changes, Portisheads’s Third, Frank Ocean & Psychocandy. Lawrence would send Josh demos, and when one in particular caught his ear, he suggested they book a few days in a ‘legit’ studio.

It went well, yielding the songs ‘Poster From Athena’ and ‘Soul Ronnie’. Encouraged by the outcome, it became something they did every other weekend. Lawrence wrote and performed, while Josh took on engineering and mixing duties. They co-produced the sessions and over time there was an album. The result is Linear B; a stunning debut born out of geography, circumstance and friendship, 25 years in the making.

Hometown Heroes (Brad Baloo X DJ Yoda X Edo G)

Hometown Heroes

Aiming to rescue the airwaves from run-of-the-mill rap and humdrum Hip-Hop, the Hometown Heroes crew swoops into view, bringing together audiovisual evangelist DJ Yoda, soundsystem shocker Brad Baloo of The Nextmen, and legendary rhyme supplier Edo G out of Boston for a funky fix of unashamed dad-hop.

The holy trinity have dozens of classics under their belts covering Rap’s golden era to the present and ‘Hometown Heroes’ is another gem providing the sort of rewindable Hip-Hop that’s hella breezy, but still packing plenty of bluster beneath the surface.

A rare but unknown modern soul dancer from band Premonition or Premonitions depending on what release they put out. The A side is well written proto disco dancer, it's no wonder collectors have been calling begging for the TPs on this , as nobody can find an original (my copy is beat to death).

I actually really dig the sweet soul flip, its almost to cheesy but walks the edge well, and has some great rising moments if that's your bag (which is should be).

'All My Heroes Are Cornballs' is an avant-garde, experimental hip hop, and punk rap album, and draws influences from experimental pop, glitch hop, ambient, noise and industrial music. It has a smoother and more melodic sound than its predecessor, employing uncommon song structures, extensive sampling, and a variety of vocal techniques such as rapping, screaming and singing. Thematically, the album is personal, introspective, and presented in a stream of consciousness form, touching on the Internet culture, prejudice, political issues and JPEGMafia's newfound fame

Jessica Pratt

Here In The Pitch

On her fourth album, west coast artist Jessica Pratt expands the scope of her artistry, placing her sharpest songs to date within an ever-broadening pool of influences including spectral '60s pop, Hollywood psychedelia and bossa nova. Whereas Pratt's 2019 record, Quiet Signs, floated elegantly in the ether, Here in the Pitch is entrenched in more earthen characteristics, as the title suggests, and her craft is emboldened with a newfound gravitas.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: 'Here In The Pitch' takes Jessica Pratt's established sound (brittle folk and slow country balladry) and widens the net into slow hazy pop and soaring widescreen songwriting. Though she's not moved away from the more minimalistic pieces, there are a lot more moments of both jubilance and fear, it's a beautifully crafted and intensely personal creation.

Mammoth Penguins

Here

Mammoth Penguins are a 3-piece indie powerhouse, showcasing the songwriting and vocal talents of Emma Kupa (Standard Fare) backed up by the noisiest rhythm section in indie pop.

May 2024 sees the release of their fourth album Here on Fika Recordings. After 2019’s big, bold and confident There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win, and the initial shock of the global pandemic cancelling a trip to SXSW in 2020, the band returned to the studio in the summer of 2021 to start recording.

The new record leans into a raw pop-punk power-trio sound more than ever, with a deep growl in layered guitars and bursts of percussion and harmony. The songs and artwork explore themes about finding a place for yourself and familiarity with people and places. Although it turns back towards a classic three-piece sound, the band weren’t restricted by that palette, adding finishing touches of percussion, extra guitars and backing vocals in short bursts in a garden shed, and also bringing in gorgeous strings to sweeten the title track.

The sound builds on the band’s first album, Hide and Seek, which was released with the much-loved and sorely missed Fortuna POP! in 2015. The follow-up LP John Doe in 2017 was an ambitious concept album, exploring the feelings of loss and anger at a man who fakes his own death only to return years later, expanding well beyond the 3-piece rock‘n’roll template, with washes of strings, synths and samples.

The ‘Penguins have been smashing it at some high-profile support slots in the lead up to this album release, including at Allo Darlin’s joyous reunion at Islington Assembly Hall (Oct 2023) and Muncie Girls last ever London show (Dec 2023). They play the Leicester Indiepop all-dayer and Wales Goes Pop in March, before heading out on tour in support of the new album in May.

Those big singalong choruses need your voice shouting back from the crowd with joy and defiance.

Mammoth Penguins are Emma Kupa (guitar, vocals), Mark Boxall (bass, vocals) and Tom Barden (drums, vocals). Reminiscent of the pop melodies of The Beths, the indie dissonance of Land of Talk, and the guitar forward slacker rock of Weezer, Mammoth Penguins marry heart-ache indiepop with spiky guitars and Emma’s frank confessional songwriting.
