Peter Harris / Fritz Catlin / Lee Scratch Perry

Mercy

“One of the most compelling and complex releases of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s post-Black Ark canon, Mercy is the fruit of a long and complex working process that has yielded exceptional results. Spearheaded by the maverick artist and musical outlier Peter Harris with Fritz Catlin, the drumming co-founder of industrial funk dub act, 23 Skidoo, Mercy’s experimental sonic occupies its own space.” David Katz (People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee “Scratch” Perry).

“I always saw Lee as a performance artist rather than a musician in the traditional sense, so this conceptual backing feels like a more accurate setting for his stream of conscious performance art,” Peter Harris explained. “There is an attention to Lee’s history here too, something that elevates the musical collage with the echoes informed by albums like Super Ape where earlier tracks were recorded over again. In ‘Big Fish,’ the lyrics pay homage to Bob Marley’s ‘Small Axe’ and the tune references Perry’s version of ‘Sugar Sugar,’ which he recorded with the Silvertones.

Although the structure might seem chaotic, the songs were crafted over a long period of time and the approach was the same as making a painting, where foundations are worked on then painted over and over until it is full wrested.” Nathan Saoudi (founder Dash The Henge/Fat White Family) boils it down. “It’s kind of quintessential outsider music - I can’t explain what they are doing, but they have a why, and that’s enough. That’s why I needed to get involved.”

      Henge

      Alpha Test 4

Intergalactic prog-ravers HENGE launch ‘Alpha Test 4’.The album, the band’s third, is a collection of indescribable sounds garnered from far off worlds.

Side A contains six blistering, energetic tracks designed to stimulate and educate - each one taking the listener on a brief, adventurous musical encounter beyond their wildest imagination. It features the single “Get A Wriggle On”, a joyous electro/prog banger calling for immediate action to tackle the climate crisis looming over Earth, along with a glitchy vignette about malfunctioning robots called “Self Repair Protocol”. Side A also contains squelching paeans for the virtue of discovery, both in the galaxy (“Wanderlust”) and the mind (“Altered State”), as well as a trippy tribute to one of the most resilient creatures known to humans, “Tardigrades”.

The mind-expanding Side B, meanwhile, sees HENGE collate a batch of cosmic, melody-melting epics. Listeners will be taken on a psychedelic journey through the arpeggiated radiations of “Ra” to the Space Rock salute of Asteroid, arriving at the love letter to Earth that is “First Encounter”.

HENGE have been delighting audiences across the UK and Europe since they landed on Earth seven years ago. Their music - known as “Cosmic Dross" - escapes definition, but occupies a space between rave and prog rock that nobody knew existed - going ‘where no band has gone before’. Ultimately, HENGE spread a message of hope that leaves audiences feeling amused and uplifted in equal measure.

Number six in the highly collectable Golden Lion Sounds series - featuring artists and friends of the iconic Todmorden based hub and released on limited edition vinyl. A true treasure and curio of Yorkshire musical and cultural history!

Manchester's Henge take over side A with a jaunty, indie-psyche number. Guided by a waspy synth motif and marching drums, it's as reassuringly eccentric and grooving as we've come to expect from this bunch of noisy weirdos.

Speaking of weird and wonderful, anyone who's witnessed Tirikilatops crazed live show will enjoy "Tomato", which captures all the quirky Korean-influenced madness over a kinda Eurodans / K-Pop hybrid which reflects the luminous colour palette of the 7"'s center label and somehow manages to align itself with International Teachers Of Pop and recent outings by Confidence Man all at once!

The Lion roars strong once more!! Stupendously limited copies, will sell out pronto!

        STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Inspired, Korean influenced synth-pop madness here from Tirikilatops and the crazies at The Golden Lion. Meanwhile, local pranksters Henge embrace middle age, swapping the Quaaludes for valerian tea but remaining deliciously outrageous as ever.

Dissolving is pleased to present our latest missive from the sonic margins, Jesus on Mars. Filtering the visionary musings of 20th Century Science-Fiction, arcane pulp visions of shallow canals running over parched desert to hazy red horizons, stars visible in the day through thin atmospheres… Space percolating, ebbing and flowing… Strange vistas of unfamiliar landscapes, alien edifices, temporal concatenations and slippages. Through the hazy lens of analogical tape meditations, informed by the side-long fuzz outs of the 70s French rock underground, maverick figures of the UK progressive fringe, German pioneers of planetary sonics, jerry-rigged nests of wires and plugs wrapped in multicoloured sleeves, potent transcendental devices awaiting the engagement of an active imagination, spreading out below a bird’s-eye viewer, clouds of dust, petrified ripples, gleams of water, crumbling cities, strange figures… the Martian deserts of the Mind.
