Donald Byrd & Gigi Gryce

Jazz Lab - 2024 Reissue

One of the finest groups of the late 50s, the Jazz Lab was co-led by the inimitable horn players Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd. Although the group worked extensively from February to September of 1957 it broke up shortly after. However, all their albums together have become jazz classics, among them the group's first LP, presented here.

"Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd's innovative, but unfortunately short-lived Jazz Lab Quintet recorded several sides during 1957, seven of which were released on this excellent LP. Jazz Lab makes for an excellent introduction to the hard bop catalogue." - 4.5 STARS AllMusic (Stephen Cook)

      Gigi Masin & Rod Modell

Red Hair Girl At The Lighthouse Beach

Vinyl LP presented in a deluxe edition with printed innersleeve and a special transparent obi strip; the cover is also printed internally. Hand numbered.

Making music is trying to start over again every time. It’s a matter of questioning and approaching. It’s never settling for the sound that fills the world around. It’s looking for a door in the sky. And maybe find it, open it, go beyond it. Rod Modell and Gigi Masin, this time together, are offering each other vibrations and insights. The former lives between two lakes, the latter between the Venetian lagoon and the sea. Everyone on their own shore, building electronic bridges in semi-darkness to allow us to cross too.

A simple concept requiring little pre-production conversation: Rod has reworked a piece of Gigi, making it his own, and so did Gigi with a piece of Rod (can you guess which is which?). A magnificent intersection of sounds and thoughts, remaining suspended to watch the passing of time, to listen to the noises and silences of life that passes inexorably around us.

      Dolphin

Recorded remotely during 2021-2022 the album took shape in the form of mutual compositions, gradually developed and embellished online. Final recording sessions took place at the majestic Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle Of Wight with Moses Boyd (drums), Tom Herbert (bass) and Siobhan Cosgrove (flute, clarinet) adding elements to several pieces. Tracks include the reflective, wistful single ‘VientoCalido’ and drifting ambient piece ‘Sabena’, a beautiful tribute to Gigi’s wife who sadly passed away during 2022.

Greg Foat has recorded prolifically in recent years including acclaimed albums Symphonie Pacifique (2020) and The Mage (2019).
Best known for his 1986 ambient masterpiece Wind and as a member of Gaussian Curve, Gigi Masin has enjoyed a revival in recent years through his Calypso album on R&S’s Apollo label and renewed touring. Dolphin represents Greg and Gigi’s first landmark recording collaboration together. “I first heard Gigi’s album Wind in 2016,” remembers Greg. “I was living in Miami and I heard it playing one Summer evening. Since then, it has always been in my mind to be able to record together.”

"This album is a tribute to the joy of playing together and creating something beautiful and exciting. A sincere hymn to life"(Gigi Masin)

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Two of the greatest forces in ambient music here, presenting a laid-back suite of shimmering aquatic melodies and deft pad swells, lightened with a deft touch of loungey jazz keys and swimming Balearic groove. Every bit as wonderful as you'd expect from such legendary musicians.

Gigi Testa is a bona fide Neapolitan hero whose work draws inspiration from local music of the last four decades - think Pino Daniele, Tullio de Piscopo, Tony Esposito, James Senese & Napoli Centrale, Nu Guinea, Mystic Jungle Tribe and rising stars such Fabrizio Fattore, Daniel Monaco and Raffaele Attansio - but also deep house and owes a lot to African music in all its forms.
He’s back with a brand new EP collating all these wild influences into one cohesive, tropical flavoured package. Three tracks of feathers n facepaint, rainforest-tinged house music that’s perfect for getting frisky under the moonlight.

Matt says: Tropical house master Gigi Testa returns to Rush Hour with more of his conga-heavy jive. House music and congas are inseparable; but when you add his other trademark elements - marimbas, warm pads, delicate bells etc - it's clear Gigi Testa has a vision and a palette to back it up. A inimitable yet highly mellifluous producer who's track's just emanate positivity.

4x LP and magazine (ft. photos, historical text and track narrations by the artist) set. Nation bring it with an essential delve in to the retrospective works of SSPS. Limited edition. No repress. HUGE TIP ON THIS!

'You can't fake the funk, as they say and SSPS is pure funk embodied in all he does, the man oozes the funk 24-7! One of my earliest encounters with SSPS was at one of the infamous Rubulad parties out in Brooklyn....the man was decked out extravagantly...a cross between Blowfly and some futuristic being zapped down to earth directly from the P-Funk mothership. Who was this masked man? The disco vampire, was beating fast disco tracks relentlessly while slamming in his 707 over the records in real time...not an easy feat, the beauty of the imperfections making it that much more exciting hearing the gallop and wild energy he was bringing to the crowd, we were eating it up. This is SSPS, fearless in his approach and execution, a modernist looking to the future but rooted in the past, an artist committed to his art... all presented with unhinged emotion. It's all or nothing...everything on the table....do or die...the true epitome of style! Declaring someone a cult figure or a legend is a huge weight to carry and is often a term that is carelessly thrown around, but those of us who have dwelled in this underground over the last 30 years can say with confidence that SSPS is just that to many of us, no questions asked, it's not up for debate.
Now, many years later we see the culmination of his electronic works from 2002-2021 committed to record in this 4xLP deluxe edition complete with 45 page booklet.

The only way to describe this offering is "full spectrum electronic musical madness" not to be categorized, never to be pigeonholed, full of surprises and straight from the gut with a direct hit to the heart. We could go on about the production processes, about his Furr City studio space or his cross country excursions for work with a truck packed with paintings (but also his music equipment) plugging in and recording during hispit stops in Motel 6's across the US. But again it doesn't do justice to simply have a small peek inside the man's mind...the music is beyond the mind. The process is the process and nothing has or can stand in the way of what the SSPS
has done in his long musical life. Punk rock, hardcore, house, no-wave, industrial, jakbeat / slow-beat and noise. It's all there for the taking, it's all intertwined. If you want it, you will find it within SSPS's works.

Nicholson's path is the embodiment of true culture within dance music cultivated from years of learning, experimenting, and pushing the limits with total commitment and immersion. "The Life and Times of GiGi Black" is true life experience, it is a reflection of someone delving deep into his craft and presenting it with care in opposition to the fast, disposable, self gratifying click bait culture we see dominating the pages today. The proof is here, drop the needle, enter the world of SSPS.' -Ron Morelli.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Landing somewhere between Jamal Moss, Alan Vega and maybe a hint of Alec Empire; Jon Nicolson is a singular, divisive artist. A hell child spawned of fried circuit boards, overdriven drum boxes and the fire of punk spirit. But there's this lysergic nature which aligns him just as much with Ron Hardy, Adonis and Lil Louis. I'd never heard of him until this and I now have a new favourite artist to dig deep into! Thankfully this expansive compilation contains a good heft of his best works. One for the true underground heads!

        The Murder Capital

        Gigi's Recovery

The Murder Capital’s first album ‘When I Have Fears’ had all its songs written and recorded within the first 9 months of the band knowing each other.

Now, with ‘Gigi’s Recovery’, the band had to learn to navigate their personal relationships through the relationships they harnessed with these new songs. Without knowing what these songs would sound like, the band knew what they wanted them to feel like- and worked backwards from there - “We had this slightly tongue-in-cheek mantra at the near-beginning of writing this record, it was - The evolution will not be compromised. This kept us on a course, even when we didn’t know where we were going”. And that’s exactly how The Murder Capital ended up with an album that is both totally pure and yet completely confident in its direction.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Liam says: When we were first introduced to The Murder Capital, they were leading the post-punk charge alongside Fontaines D.C. However, whilst their post-punk core does remain intact, 'Gigi's Recovery' sees The Murder Capital acknowledging and thriving within their musical evolution.

“Crying” sees them capturing the 'Primary Colours' era of The Horrors, whilst “Return My Head” and “Ethel” seize their post-punk roots and take them to new heights. As for “The Lies Becomes The Self” and “A Thousand Lives”, their more art-rock leanings wouldn't go amiss on a Radiohead record. Then there's “We Had To Disappear”, a powerfully beautiful lullaby that is easily one of the best tracks they've ever done. James McGovern's poetic lyricism remains one of The Murder Capital's strongest attributes, always commanding each track with hypnotic exposition.

Full of passion and spirited urgency, but also moments of tender nuance, 'Gigi's Recovery' is a special album by a truly special band.
