A Dream Outside - 2025 Reissue

Gengahr’s 'A Dream Outside' reissue is pressed exclusively on transparent orange vinyl as part of Transgressive’s 20th-anniversary celebrations, limited to 500 copies.

On the surface, the hazy indie that this North London four-piece command seems a million miles from anything that might prompt sleepless nights, but it’s the slowly creeping scares that leave the deepest impression. Through their smog and psych, frontman Felix Bushe’s lyricism draws upon the darkest corners of both the supernatural and the more grounded. Breakthrough track ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’, for example, is a tale of “a little boy vampire who falls for a girl” whilst ‘Powder’’s instrumentation melts around a wistful ponderingon death.

“The fantastical side of the world is more exciting to me than the mundane,” he explains. He cites early exposure to Lou Reed and David Bowie and their respective constructions of alternate worlds within their lyrics as a huge turning point - “that was the point that I realised there was more than just writing about smoking cigarettes and drinking beers,” he smiles. David Lynch and Terry Gilliam are also confessed as influences on their cinematic take on indie pop. Those musical backdrops are building a legacy of their own too, with guitarist John Victor already being framed alongside greats of the instrument like Jonny Greenwood and Graham Coxon. Indeed, it was John who solidified these school-friends’ ambition with his effortless, virtuoso guitar-work, though it was perhaps more accidental a pairing than it might seem. John studied jazz bass at university, and only metthe rest of the band when playing bass in function bands – his guitar technique is entirely self-taught. With NME declaring his on-stagephysique “octopus-like”, there’s clearly something of that aforementioned otherworldliness seeping into the members themselves, as well as their effortless talents.

    Red Sun Titans

Experimental North London alt-pop outfit Gengahr return with their anticipated new album, Red Sun Titans, produced and mixed by Matt Glasbey.

Comprising of bassist Hugh Schulte, drummer Danny Ward, lead vocals/guitarist Felix Bushe and guitarist John Victor, Gengahr first arrived in 2015 with their debut album, A Dream Outside, gathering rave reviews for its dark take on dreamy shoegaze and updated approach to British-bred indie rock.

The band promoted the record on a nationwide and European tour before getting to work on their sophomore effort Where Wilderness Grows (2017), praised by the likes of DIY and The Line of Best Fit. They returned in 2020 for their third LP, Sanctuary, capturing the magic from their debut and featuring hits ‘Heavenly Maybe’ and ‘Icarus’.

'Red Sun Titans' is Gengahr at their finest – a bold collection of indie pop that sees the beloved UK outfit continue to push the boundaries.

      Where Wildness Grows

Gengahr present their highly-anticipated new album ‘Where Wildness Grows’, out on Transgressive Records.

Having released their much acclaimed debut ‘A Dream Outside’ in June 2015, the band spent a soul-searching two years writing and recording its follow up, a process which saw them reject multiple recordings and eventually return to the drawing board, re-group and head back to the studio with a clarity and conviction to deliver an album which sees them taking a bold and ambitious artistic stride.

The album was recorded in London during summer 2017 by acclaimed producer Neil Comber (Glass Animals, M.I.A, Songhoy Blues) and features guest vocals from Ellie Rowsell of Wolf Alice.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Despite sounding like someone who's just been punched in the stomach whilst eating a burrito, Gengahr pull together an entirely melodic but ruthlessly dynamic suite of dreamlike panned melodies and the chugging undercurrent of a beautifully varied by undeniably solid backline. Brilliantly written and evocative dancefloor syndie (I just made that up, it's synthy indie, obviously).

North London’s Gengahr are pleased to announce their debut album A Dream Outside with new single ‘Heroine’ - their most immediate track to date and another glimpse at what their debut is set to offer.

Picking up where 2014 left off, Gengahr marked out their intentions for 2015 with an opening slot on Alt-J’s European tour and the release of the gloriously spellbinding ‘She’s A Witch’, which received acclaim from the likes of The Sunday Times, Independent, DIY and NME whilst being added to playlists on 6Music (C-list), Radio 1 (INMWT), Amazing Radio (A-list) and XFM (evening list).

For fans of Circa Waves, Foals, Mystery Jets and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
