Inspired by the songs of The Smiths, The Jam and The Faces, Martin Rossiter’s literate vocals and Steve Mason’s fluid guitar lines were perfectly complemented by the intuitive rhythm section of Kevin Miles and Matt James. They released four studio albums and a collection of B-sides and radio demos between 1995 and 2001, were named Best New Act at the inaugural NME awards in 1995, and went on to score 10 Top 40 hits.

        Tyrone Davis / Gene Chandler

Slip Away / There Was A Time

Two great Brunswick sides on one disc, from two of the greatest soul vocalists. The A side features Tyrone Davis’ version of Clarence Carter’s ‘Slip Away’ from his essential ‘Can I Change My Mind’ album, which has never previously been available as a single. A mid-tempo toe tapper with a mid-section brass build that’s underpinned by a funky groove. The flipside cranks up the action with Gene Chandler’s riotous take on James Brown’s anthem ‘There Was A Time’. Worth the entry for the horn stabs alone, it’s an expressive slice of sharp-edged driving funk.

          LA Priest

          Gene

GENE arrives five years after the iconoclast variously known as Sam Eastgate, Sam Dust and LA Priest thrilled the world with the cosmic pop of his debut album Inji, his first LP for Domino and his first solo output following the disbanding of former outfit, Late Of The Pier. GENE also follows the 2016 project Soft Hair in which Sam teamed up with Connan Mockasin for an instant cult-classic album.

GENE, the album, is named after a brand-new analogue drum machine Sam dreamt up and built alone. Working in isolation for more than two years in California, Wales and England’s south coast, soldering iron in hand, Sam developed the inners of GENE using dozens of electrical circuits he made up himself. The creation came after a search for an alternative to the structure and rigor of standard drum machines. Its unique rhythmic patterns are the focal point for the album, which is coloured by lush, pastoral tones, paired with the influence of his environmental changes.

The product of clear-eyed focus, the record offers a one-way ticket into a dimension entirely of Sam’s own making.

GENE is the most complete realisation of his vision yet. These songs are on a quest for meaning, exploring the limits of their maker’s abilities.

Coaxed into life with the juicy groove of “Beginning”, the record struts and sparkles through “Rubber Sky” and “What Moves” towards the melancholic interlude of “Sudden Thing” and the gigantic noise of centerpiece “Monochrome”, taking a sharp turn in the final third towards something darker and more mystical.

GENE was produced alongside London based artist, producer, DJ and founder of Phantasy records, Erol Alkan.

            No Other - Reissue

Gene Clark’s 1974 masterpiece gets the reappraisal it’s long overdue.

“One of the greatest albums ever made. Initially celebrated for its obscurity, No Other is now celebrated for its magnificence. It was in every way a magnum opus: epic, sprawling, poetic, choral, rococo.” The Guardian

On the eve of what would have been American singer-songwriter and Byrds founding member Gene Clark’s 75th birthday comes the reissue of one of his finest works, No Other. Released in 1974 on Asylum Records, a year after the Byrds shortlived reunion, Gene reached for the stars with No Other; a psychedelic rock, folk, country and soul record that famously cost a small fortune to make. Although received warmly by critics, it flopped and was soon deleted, a failure Gene never came to terms with.

However, as The New York Times wrote around the record’s 40th anniversary in 2014, “hindsight has burnished No Other, as it has redeemed other albums that went on to be reconstructed as rock repertory, like Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers and Lou Reed’s Berlin,” with the album now being increasingly recognised as one of the greatest of its time, if not all time.

45 years on and recently remastered at Abbey Road, 4AD have given No Other the reappraisal it deserves.

“Blue” Gene Tyranny And Peter Gordon

              Trust In Rock

Trust in Rock documents the last evening of an epic concert series held at Berkeley's University Art Museum in November 1976, featuring an all-star ensemble of the Bay Area's most unclassifiable musicians performing works by "Blue" Gene Tyranny and Peter Gordon. This band, and this concert, played at the nexus of New Music, jam bands, "pattern music," and punk. Tyranny had quit Iggy Pop's band in 1973; Gordon had already moved to New York and began playing with Arthur Russell and Rhys Chatham. Their combined band crossed styles and institutions and time, and was assembled from the effervescence of the Bay Area scene in the 1970s. It included Gordon on saxes and the RMI Synthesizer; Tyranny on the piano; local video-performance artist Patrice Manget on vocals; Karl Young on saxes; composer-performer-guitarist Paul Dresher, who played in Tyranny's band Edge of the Road along with percussionist Gene Reffkin; Steve Bartek of the Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo on bass; and Mills College student Janet Cuniberti on the funky Clavinet and RMI Synth.

Tyranny's direct and profound songs are "concerned with influence, trust, self-reliance, and having to re-do what is true for you;" Gordon’s songs, with lyrics by then-partner Kathy Acker, give the performance a sexual and political edge, complimenting the intensity of his instrumental works. Though some of the works on Trust in Rock also appear on Peter Gordon's Star Jaws and "Blue" Gene Tyranny's Out of the Blue, many others are available here for the first time. At this performance, Gordon, Tyranny, and their band were not afraid to take the time to "listen to the interior state of something," as Tyranny later put it: they put their trust in rock.

                Wolfmanhatten Project

                Blue Gene Stew

Merriam-Webster definition of supergroup: a rock group made up of prominent former members of other rock groups, also: an extremely successful rock group. While the definition of “extremely successful” may differ, there can be no arguing that Wolfmanhattan Project are a supergroup.

This three piece features Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus), Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs) and Kid Congo Powers(Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Pink Monkey Birds) and their collective track record beats Blind Faith, West, Bruce & Laing and The Power Station’s resumes combined! All three members write, sing and play in this band and, for anyone familiar with the member’s other bands, this stuff is as twisted and great as one can hope for. Everyone involved brings flavors from their past efforts and it’s all mixed together into one unholy rock ’n’ roll gumbo. It’s sleazy, swampy, trashy, no-wavey, weird and rocking! Lydia Lunch even makes an appearance, which makes this album that much more super!

Gene Vincent And The Blue Caps

Gene Vincent And The Blue Caps

The second LP from Gene Vincent and The Blue Caps, a self-titled affair, was recorded in October 1956 a mere 4 months after the band's debut. Again featuring the searing guitar work of Cliff Gallup, this album shows Vincent at his most mature and confident. The band was capable of running circles around basically all white rock and roll groups around at the time and this LP showcases their depth and breadth fantastically. Featuring amazing originals, one of the more brilliant covers of The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody", and a haunting version of The Delmore Brothers' "Blues Stay Away From Me", Gene Vincent and The Blue Caps is necessary for all fans of early rock and roll.

                    Julian Dawson & Gene Parsons

                    Hillbilly Zen

There's always a place for strong songs, well sung and played and Julian Dawson's "Hillbilly Zen", his fifteenth and latest album is one of these. It's different from anything he's done before here you'll find bluegrass, country music, soul ballads, blues and even rockabilly - all self-penned too. Who better to help him do it right than ex-Byrd Gene Parsons, one of Dawson's 'musical heroes', Parsons plays acoustic and electric Stringbender guitars, banjo, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, drums and percussion, spoons, bass, harmonica, hi-strung guitar and harmony vocals. The result is an excellent 'americana' album from Londoner Dawson.
