Claude Cooper Feat. Joe Talbot

Perfect Execution

Illusive Bristolian beatmaker Claude Cooper returns with a visceral blast of psychedelic-hip-hop, enlisting IDLES frontman Joe Talbot and BEAK> bassist Billy Fuller for ‘Perfect Execution’, a limited edition 7" single in aid of War Child UK.

Claude Cooper has found a kindred spirit in Joe Talbot. The IDLES frontman has long worn his hip-hop influences as openly as his post-punk ones, and on ‘Perfect Execution’ that affinity finds its fullest expression yet. Cooper's raw, dissonant production collides with Talbot's breathless, confrontational lyricism in a track that draws its lineage from Public Enemy as readily as it does from Bristol's own bruised musical history.

The lyrics pull no punches. Talbot inhabits a landscape of public spectacle and private suffering, circling images of crowds, chains, hanging and the hollow comfort of slogans. The repeated refrain of “No pain no gain” hits differently when set against the track's subject matter, its bludgeoning repetition somewhere between protest chant and bitter irony.

Joe says, “It’s an honour to work with some beautiful Bristol heads on this track for Warchild. All is love”.

Shinbone's Revenge

‘Shinbone’s Revenge’ is the follow up to Christian’s last album “Whatever Best Serves’ released in 2023. Christian is the founder member of The Earlies, has been Liam Gallaghers keyboard player and is currently the keyboard player in the newly reformed Oasis. Again Christian is joined by ‘The Enemy Chorus’ an ensemble of friends and cohorts this time including Little Barrie (Primal Scream/The The/Liam Gallagher/John Squire) The album is scorched with the psychedelic funk rock heat of Booker T and Brian Auger, the punchy brass arrangements of Chicago Transit Authority and Tower of Power, and the kosmische motorik wonders of Can, Cluster and Harmonia.

“I can honestly say I’ve never heard anything he’s played” - Liam Gallagher.

“The only other keyboard virtuoso who can hold a candle to Christaian wears a cape and performs on ice sometimes, he’s great but I’d go for this chap every time personally” - Marc Riley.

J Dilla / The Jimi Entley Sound

Geek Down

What do we have here? Something that'll make the legion of J Dilla fans dizzy with excitement that's what! For the first time in ages, the original "Charlie's Theme" by The Jimi Entley Sound b/w "Geek Down" - the track Dilla created from "Charlie's Theme".

Included on the legendary "Donuts" LP, "Geek Down" is a tense and rambunctous ride into the breakbeat of "Charlie's Theme"; drawing out that eerie string motif and adding flanged stabs of wah-wah'd organ, guitar and brass.

"Charlie's Theme" was released in 2002 and produced by Portishead's Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley. The only single they did, its post-millennium release date hides its timeless library breaks / hard funk credentials - and is surely one of the most modern samples used by Dilla for his genre-defining LP.

Artwork by Pete Fowler. Proceeds to the War Child charity. Limited copies.
