Pax Romax Feat. Fred Ventura

Remember - Incl. Flemming Dalum Remix

Gino Soccio's 'Dancer' is a standout record when thinking about the early days of disco, mainly thanks to the lush synths crafted by the Canadian producer. His magic on the keys helped set the sonic agenda of those times and led him to six hit singles and four albums. After all that success, though, he vanished in 1984 and left behind only a fine musical legacy. Random Vinyl pays homage to it with a revamped release of 'Remember,' featuring Fred Ventura's vocals and Ivy Sharrard's French verses. Producer Marc Hartman delivers a 2024 rendition, while Flemming Dalum adds a banging remix to make this a great tribute.

STAFF COMMENTS

Mine says: Wake up italo heads! Fred Ventura pays tribute to an absolute classic and Flemming Dalum is on remix duties - sounds like a dream come true? Well it is. MEGA!

Fred Again...

Actual Life 3: January 1 - September 9 2022

Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022) is the third in his series of Actual Life albums, which saw Fred again.. resume his diary-esque approach to production using intimate use of voice notes from friends, videos found whilst scrolling on Instagram and samples from important records in his life.

It was an autobiographical chapter of work that pushed forward the heritage of UK electronic music while standing as testament to the power of music in facilitating catharsis, healing and celebrating the realities of friendship, love and life.

    Fred Again...

    Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021)

Fred again.. releases a repress of his critically-acclaimed album Actual Life 2 (February 2 -October 15 2021) after popular demand. As the title suggests, the album offers an insight into an 8 month period of Fred’s life, stitching together vocal clips and found sounds to create a deeply autobiographical follow-up to his breakthrough record Actual Life (April 14 -December 17 2020). The repress remains on a clear vinyl, but this time round the vinyl comes in a black inner bag.

Actual Life 2 (February 2 - October 15 2021) features his hit singles Billie (loving arms), Hannah (the sun) and Faisal (envelops me). With this body of work, we’re offered a snapshot of an artist dealing with the many complexities of grief-exploring how confiding in close friends and family have helped him heal wounds, but also acknowledging how that grief is indelibly etched into his subconscious.

      Fred Again.. & Brian Eno

      Secret Life

Ambient demigod Brian Eno and modern bass & Boiler Room poster boy Fred Again team up for a rather unexpected curve ball. It seems that Brian has taken the lead on "Secret Life", forcing the young upstart to ditch his rampant, ADHD-fueled finger drumming and inferno-causing bass-garage-house hybrids for an exercise in what his next door neighbour (true story), and mentor, specializes at - the most serene ambient music around.

It's a delicate, spacious listen; with Eno's famous use of reductive techniques allowing the most precious of elements all the room they need to sparkle - like a tiny Faberge Egg presented in a vast, grandiose, but pin-drop silent gallery. The use of silence given plenty of reverence. There's smeared vocal and string manipulations that reverberate from almost heavenly realms, and in parts, it's like the antithesis to Burials recent dystopian ambient project "Antidawn" - exploring the more optimistic territories of the Skyrim metaverse in a non-linear structure which suspends time and allows you to drift in and out of its liminal reality.

It'll sit comfortably by your side on a rain soaked day languidly pottering around the home, or set the perfect atmosphere for your next art show installation; or even serenade your new born into a dreamlike slumber. I can't help feeling its one of those albums that'll be really affected by the environment in which it is aired. Like much of Eno's work, it's a subtle listen that I'm convinced will reward the deeper and more attentive listeners.

Produced by Brian Eno and Fred Gibson (aka Fred Again) 4th April 2020 - 23rd December 2022

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Everyone loves a bit of Eno, right? This collaboration sees Fred Again's chopped-up synthpop / alt r&b hybrid given the Eno treatment and sloooowed into a beautiful, restorative slice of stargazing ambient. A great collaborative endeavour, with more than a little classic Eno.

Alan Braxe, Fred Falke & Friends

The Upper Cuts - 2023 Reissue

If you want to understand how French producer Alan Braxe ended up making some of the most important house music records of the late 1990s and early 2000s, you need to understand his modus operandi. Everything must be simple, and everything must be sincere. You hear this repeatedly in Braxe’s music, from the golden emotional minimalism of Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You” to the perfectly uncluttered house music strut of “Intro.”

The Upper Cuts, originally released in 2005, rounds up several of Braxe’s greatest hits, including “Music Sounds Better With You,” his classic remix of “At Night” by Shakedown and - most prominently - his work with Fred Falke, a bass player Braxe met on military service. Braxe and Falke’s union created some of the best house music records of the 2000s, with Falke’s slinky, melodious and very funky bass lines fitting like a glove around Braxe’s production know-how and ear for a melody.

The revival of interest in the first wave of French Touch producers makes 2023 the perfect time to re-release The Upper Cuts, which has long been out of print. This newly reissued version adds seven bonus tracks. These include the classic Braxe / Falke production “Chrystal City,” which originally appeared on the “Rubicon” single; Braxe’s iconic remix of Britney Spears’ “Anticipating”; “You’ll Stay In My Heart,” a tear-jerking Braxe / Falke work that was never properly released; and two completely new tracks that show Braxe at his best.

The Upper Cuts is a classic work of house music history that can still light up a dance floor; a work of sadness and joy; darkness and light; profundity and release. If you want to know how Braxe helped to create a new template for the French house sound in the early 2000s, right when French house needed it most; or how Braxe’s gorgeously clean productions and evocative synth melody provided a bridge between the first wave of French house and the Ed Banger / Justice / Kitsuné axis that followed; then your answer starts here.

          Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake

From The River To The Ocean

Available on vinyl for the first time since its original CD-only release in 2007.

The closest of relationships gives its members space to expand, change, develop and play. Tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson and drummer Hamid Drake have just that kind of partnership, one that has seen them periodically move apart and work extensively on other fronts - Anderson tending to the recent relocation of his major jazz venue the Velvet Lounge; Drake in a dizzying array of globetrotting ensembles - but always returning to the fold, digging in together and checking out what’s been learned in the interim.

Over the course of some three decades, the master saxophonist and the prodigy percussionist have continued to reconfirm their commitment to their joint project.

Bob & Fred / The Volumes

I’ll Be On My Way / I’ve Never Been So In Love

Deptford Northern Soul Club continue their retrograde mission with two colossal floorfillers from the late 1960s Northern scene.

‘I’ll Be On My Way’ is not only a staggeringly beautiful song, it’s also a super rare side filled with those strings that recall the echoey ceiling of Wigan Casino. A supremely soulful cut with a sturdy beat from 1966, with a classic vocal to fall in love with. Originally on Big Mack and going for over two grand, even the re-issue on Goldmine fetches 75 quid, it’s such an invigorating vocal and storming instrumental.

On side B, The Volumes’ funky floor surfer ‘I’ve Never Been So In Love’. Filled with horn slurps over a crazed organ anchor, it chugs into a singalong chorus that’s impossible to forget. From 1969 and originally on the obscure Garu label, it goes for between £40 and £140 pounds if you're lucky enough to find a copy.

Nicely pressed in sturdy 7" disco bag. Northern never sounded so crisp and fresh!

              STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Shark-slaying re-issues to keep Kevin Lewandowski crying into his dipping stock value. If you're a fan of Northern on a budget (and sounded nice n crisp to boot!) you need these floor-fillers!

Fred Wesley & The New JBs

              Breakin' Bread

Reissued on LP with a sumptuous, five-color, 22” x 22” poster of the cover art, all wrapped in a Stoughton tip-on jacket and thick polybag.

Times are tough, the economy is rough, everybody’s tryin’ to make a dollar. Sometimes you get away from yourself. Won’t you go back and break bread, while we still have some to break? So implored James Brown, Fred Wesley and even album engineer Bob Both, on the back cover liners of the 1974 soul classic 'Breakin’ Bread'. Times were indeed tough for everyday folks in the waning days of the Nixon era. Escape-ism was needed. Humanity sometimes seemed to be in short supply. But James Brown and his assembled People Records roster were always there to take soul music fans away from their everyday trials and tribulations, even while occasionally funking up negative situations (for instance, “Rockin’ Funky Watergate,” one of the centerpieces of this album). The heavy grooves laid down by trombonist and bandleader Fred Wesley, saxophonist and arranger St. Clair Pinckney and Fred’s assembled “New JB’s” were, almost literally, comfort for the ears. 1974 saw a vortex of superfunk coming out of James Brown’s People Records stable, and this platter wasn’t even the only JB’s album that year. But it is one that added to the powerful musical and social legacy of that crew. It’s an air-tight, eight course meal, with most platters clocking in at four delicious minutes each. “Breakin’ Bread” is a truly memorable funk stew, with warm, call-and-response vocals, complicated-but-laidback soul, and an important message - alluded to in the back cover plea. “I Wanna Get Down,” “Rice ‘N’ Ribs” and “Funky Music Is My Style” all feature intricate, infectious grooves. In fact, there isn’t much time to catch your breath on Breakin’ Bread, and that’s a beautiful thing.

Serious Poke is the debut solo from Fred Abbott the London-based musician, until now, best known as lead guitarist and keyboard player in the recently disbanded Noah And The Whale.

A supremely talented multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Abbott joined Noah And The Whale in 2009 and went on to huge success, especially notable being his contribution to 2011‘s Platinum-selling and highly acclaimed Last Night On Earth.

Abbott enlisted the help of his Noah And The Whale compadres and other friends for the recording of Serious Poke, with sessions taking place at West London’s British Grove Studios over the past year. The album was co-produced by Fred with Martin Hollis, whose diverse credits include Grinderman, The Rolling Stones and Take That.

              Fred Neil

Tear Down The Walls (with Vince Martin) And Bleecker & MacDougal

Fred Neil is one of those characters whose enigmatic personaes often overshadow their music. His story resonates with the sort of details familiar to fans of Syd Barrett, Nick Drake or Tim Buckley. Bags of talent, a maverick spirit and TOO MANY DRUGS. Neil had a superb rich baritone voice and these early sixties recordings capture his charismatic presence and show his compelling songwriting abilities. His recent death from cancer ends speculation that his 25 year silence could end, but the quality and richness of this disc will do much to satisfy those interested in discovering this huge lost talent.
