FOURTH DIMENSION

Various Artists

When Worlds Collide

A limited double-LP collection of artists who've been on either Fourth Dimension Records or Lumberton Trading Company (or both). The title, based on the name of a childhood '50s sci-fi film favourite, also not only reflects the bringing together of these two labels but also the fact that most of the artists they are concerned with tend to navigate a wide range of ideas and approaches in their sound. The 2LP also began as a reflection of the two labels coming together on 18 May 2024 at London's Cafe OTO for an event featuring Alternative TV, Splintered, Edward Ka-Spel and Bass Communion. The 2LP, beautifully packaged in a Puppy38 designed sleeve.

    EXTNDDNTWRK

    Albus

EXTNDDNTWRK is the enduring solo project of Andrew Fearn, who is more commonly recognised as one half of Sleaford Mods. While akin to his role in his main group with respect to primarily working with electronic sounds, samples and rhythms, EXTNDDNTWRK is a far more mannered affair whose approach is concerned with atmospherics, occasional tempered beats perfect for a late night drive along a deserted motorway, near-ambient swerves into neo-minimalism, crisp melodies and big grooves swollen with the kinda moody sickness fever dreams are made of.

Ultimately, there’s a strong soundtrack-ish angle to EXTNDDNTWRK’s instrumentals that almost command cinematic accompaniment which show maturity to each of the nine songs that constitute 'Albus'. Together, they illustrate an artist clearly at the top of his game in a home studio setting as much as when he’s working up a sweat on stage and inadvertently proving he’s got more energy than most of those half his age.

Over these nine cuts, EXTNDDNTWRK has successfully refined an approach to such music to the point it not only sounds entirely his own but shines a light to future paths Andrew could take this on.

      Youngs, Richard

      Iker

New album from Richard Youngs that, similar to a lot of his work, happened fairly spontaneously following our having heard one of Richard's sketches utilising a Spanish guitar during the spring of 2021 and being duly impressed. We then proposed releasing a CD album of such work, where Richard uses the same guitar alongside real-time street sounds, birdsong, tape loops, synth, FM radio and runout grooves to create a setting that's comparatively gentler than most of his work thus far on Fourth Dimension Records.

Iker, meaning 'visitation' in Basque, collects five songs wilfully displaying Richard's prowess with the guitar whilst placing his delicate strumming of it alongside subtle elements that accord the proceedings with a hue unmistakably his own. If interested in the more stripped-down approach of some of John Fahey's work or Sir Richard Bishop's own impressionist playing then Iker should make for a wonderful accompaniment to such work. Moreover, though, this is just another fantastic album from one of the best eclectic and most individualist musicians the UK has produced during the past few decades.

        Bliscappen Van Maria

        Bliscepen

Following several low run self-releases, this is Swiss group Bliscappen Van Maria’s debut album proper, comprising of two side-long pieces merging all from frazzled electronic swirl, drones, ethereal hums, guitars, percussion, banjo and the overall hue of the imaginary psychedelic western movie soundtrack these improvisations actually had in mind from their outset.

Lavishly packaged in reversed card sleeve and limited to 500 only, this comes highly recommended to those who enjoyed the Zsolt Sores Ahad 2CD on Fourth Dimension/AudioTONG or for all lovers of interstellar minimalism and the likes of Circle, early Pink Floyd, Ash Ra Tempel, Taj Mahal Travellers et al. A blissful debut by this group with roots in a number of others to have emanated from Switzerland’s ‘90s post-hardcore punk/noise/post-rock scene (Equus, Montevideo, Forceed, Knut, etc.)
