Classics Volume 2 - Inc. Moodymann / Solomun Remixes

4 To The Floor is committed to delivering seminal house music to wax, making sought after heritage tracks readily available on vinyl for crate diggers to add to their collections. Classics Volume 2 kicks off with a slice of Defected 2012 goodness; ‘Around (Solomun Vox)’ by Noir & Haze. When Solomun took his turn at remixing this Ibiza anthem, it was heard everywhere from Hackney warehouses to Pacha Ibiza, and showed a different side to the heavier original. On the B-Side is the Moodymann Edit, where he makes subtle changes to Solomun’s mix by interweaving tribal drums and stripping back some of the techier elements, followed by Chicken Lips’ electro banger ‘He Not In’ which thunders through. An instantly recognisable record, even if they’re not aware of its name or who wrote it, with an unmistakable bassline that has truly stood the test of time.

    Bright Eyes

    Noise Floor (Rarities: 1998-2005)

One of the things that struck Oberst as he and the band went through twenty-plus years of music is that he may in fact have been writing the same song this whole time. Not sonically, of course, but conceptually. This last wave contains, in Noise Floor, early Bright Eyes songs so raw Oberst never even released them back in the day, as well as, in Cassadaga and The People’s Key, the band’s most polished and sophisticated albums. When Bright Eyes toured Cassadega they performed an epic 7 sold-out nights at NYC’s Town Hall. What’s more grown-up rock- star than that? And yet ...“Thematically those early songs are not that different than the songs I make now,” Oberst says, shaking his head. “There’s something affirming and disheartening about it. It’s like, have I really changed or grown? But maybe it’s just that I knew what I wanted to write about from the beginning.”

        The 13th Floor Elevators

13 Of The Best Of The 13th Floor Elevators

The triumvirate of Roky Erickson, Tommy Hall and Stacy Sutherland had to feature. Transcendent slower songs (often) don’t feature full band performances – so, no Splash One. The song had to be a band original. So, no Baby Blue. 13 unlucky for some. This compilation launches a new phase in the 13th Floor Elevators catalogue and previews the forthcoming series THE QUEST FOR PURE SANITY: the release in optimal quality of all surviving source material for all of the band’s recordings. ‘

13 OF THE BEST’ has been mastered separately to vinyl, CD, and streaming for the best possible sound quality for each format. Each original source has been referenced to the earliest vinyl pressing and meticulously transferred at 96khz 24- bit resolution. Multitrack tapes of the original recording sessions have been newly mixed in strict accordance with the records as first released. ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’, the band’s seminal single, is presented here for the first time in true stereo. Taken from the original multitrack session tape, the song has been mixed to stereo in accordance with the iconic mono 45 as recorded and engineered by Walt Andrus. ‘Slip Inside This House’ viewed by fans and critics alike as the Elevators’ masterpiece and one of the key psychedelic recordings of the era, is included on the LP as the edited mono single mix so the loudest possible cut can be achieved. The eight-minute stereo version is included on all other formats. ‘Never Another’, ‘Dr Doom’ and ‘Livin’ On’ from the band’s final sessions have been newly mixed but without the overdubs added almost a year after recording. While the session tapes survive, the overdubs do not. ‘Livin’ On’ features Roky Erickson’s original superior vocal performance instead of the overdub used on the ‘BULL OF THE WOODS’ LP. What is uniquely presented here is 100% Elevators as mixed and intended for the LP. No embellishments!

‘13 OF THE BEST’ is produced by 13th Floor Elevators official archivist and historian Paul Drummond who has also written sleeve notes with full track-by-track information.

Barry says: There's not much you can say about the 13th Floor Elevators that hasn't already been said, but this stunning collection has been remastered and collected with care and attention, giving Erikson & Co's psychedelic meanderings their finest sheen yet. Ace collection.

          Scout Gillett

          No Roof No Floor

“Home” is a tough thing to pinpoint for someone who’s constantly in motion. Scout Gillett knows this well, but since relocating from Kansas City in 2017, she’s found one in Brooklyn’s DIY scene, playing in multiple live bands and even starting her own booking company to organize local shows. Her intrepid nature results from a childhood spent running barefoot through rural Missouri and coming of age in Kansas City’s punk scene. Her debut solo album no roof no floor is a bold and spirited yet warm, intimate meditation on trust, surrender, and what makes a home.

Following the sudden overdose of a lover in 2018 and the onset of the 2020 quarantine, Scout returned to Missouri in search of reprieve. Instead, she was dismayed to find that her hometown was suffering; friends and family members were caught in the grips of drug and alcohol addiction. Overcome by grief and helplessness, she retreated inward, channeling her fears and frustrations, as she always had, into songwriting. The resulting songs were more vulnerable than any of her prior work, and it was a while before the notion of sharing them even occurred to her. Then Nick Kinsey, the album’s producer, called from his recording studio The Chicken Shack in Stanfordville, New York to tell Scout that his friends Ellen Kempner (Palehound) and David Lizmi (MS MR) had relocated upstate, and were interested in working on an album with her.

Recorded in a big wooden barn with the doors wide open, there’s a sense of spaciousness on no roof no floor befitting its title. On some songs, there are even audible cricket chirps. The arrangements, too—which feature contributions from Kempner, Lizmi, and Kevin Copeland (The Big Net)—reflect Scout’s rural roots and her indie spirit; a fusion of upbeat, guitar-driven melodies and folk/country instrumentation like pedal steel, harmonica, and tenor banjo. All of these elements are underpinned by Scout’s signature soaring, velvet vocals and openhearted lyricism. She arrives at her thesis on the haunting six-minute centerpiece “hush, stay quiet”: “you can only save yourself,” she muses over a resolute guitar. We can’t always know what to expect, even in a place we’ve been before. With a little trust, though, we can find a safe place within. No roof required.

Initially written and recorded when Atmosphere and fledgling label Rhymesayers Entertainment were still making a name for themselves in the Minneapolis hip-hop scene, “God’s Bathroom Floor” was an early standout for the group. Turning heads and drawing new fans in with Slug’s introspective raps over producer Stress’ hypnotic jazzy beat, the song was performed live frequently, becoming an audience favorite before ever appearing on an actual release. Even then, it was only a live performance they made available, and only on a limited mixtape they released in 1996.

It would be another year before the 4-track studio recording would surface on Atmosphere’s Overcast! EP, a collection of focus tracks promoting their debut full-length album, but “God’s Bathroom Floor” never made it onto the album itself and slowly slipped into obscurity from there. Now, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, the original recording has been unearthed, remastered, and pressed on this limited edition 7-inch vinyl. Plus, in a nod to the song’s original release as a live version, we’ve included a new live performance of the song, recorded recently in Montreal, mixed and mastered exclusively for this special release. Whether you’re a lifelong fan whose first introduction to the group was through this song, a new fan looking to explore the group’s historical roots further, or somewhere in between, this release will be a welcome addition to your Atmosphere collection.

Alison Chesley, Steve Albini, Tim Midyett

Music From The Film Girl On The Third Floor

Touch and Go release a double LP of music from the film Girl on the Third Floor; "creepy instrumental music" as described by co-creator Steve Albini. When director Travis Stevens called about composing music for his new horror film, Steve Albini (Shellac) found himself with a new creative challenge. After meeting with Stevens and Greg Newman from Queensbury Pictures, Steve signed on and recruited Tim Midyett (Mint Mile, Silkworm) and Alison Chesley (Helen Money) to complete the ensemble that would compose and record the soundtrack. Guest vocals on “Irish” by Gaelynn Lea. Upon completion of the soundtrack, Albini reflected, "Tim and Alison are a joy to work with, very open-minded and eager, and master musicians. Just great. That whole part of it, writing and playing with them, was fucking fantastic and effortless, and I wish I could do it all the time."

              Nate Young

              Volume One: Dilemmas Of Identity

First release in a new multi-part series of solo releases by Wolf Eyes frontman Nate Young. An evolution from the previous Regression material, taking in elements of classic synth soundtracks, ambient and electronic body music but filtered through a typically off-centre Michigan underground sensibility.

In the Regression series - ‘Regression’ (2009), ‘Stay Asleep’ (2011), ‘Other Days’ (2012), ‘Blinding Confusion’ (2013) - Young drew a compositional aesthetic from Italian library music and musique concrète. Since then, Young has been interpreting the traditional musical methods of rhythm and melody into complex synthesizer compositions.

These songs were commonly made as a distraction from grief, seasonal depression and isolation. Sometimes severely ridiculous and unrelenting, other times slow, sparse and strange, this material didn’t fit in with the Regression series. It was archived and unreleased until now.

Nate Young is a Detroit-based musician working in experimental electronic sound for over twenty years. In 1998, Young founded legendary noise group Wolf Eyes. Solo and as Wolf Eyes, Young has toured the world, released countless records, collaborated with Anthony Braxton and Marshall Allen and inspired a generation of electronic musicians. Recent accomplishments include performing his compositions with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and creating Trip Metal Fest, an annual free experimental music festival in Detroit that has brought luminaries such as Morton Subotnick and the Art Ensemble of Chicago to the city. In 2016, Young co-created (with John Olson) Lower Floor Music with assistance from iconic electronic label Warp Records.

Presented in a reverse board sleeve with A2 double-sided newsprint poster. Includes digital download card featuring bonus track ‘Pardon The Mess’.

                Toshio Matsuura Group

Loveplaydance - 8 Scenes From The Floor

On ‘LOVEPLAYDANCE’, legendary Tokyo DJ and producer Toshio Matsuura charts a new direction. Casting musical cornerstones in a fresh light, the Toshio Matsuura Group features Tom Skinner (drummer for Sons of Kemet and Owiny Sigoma Band amongst others) as its musical director, as well as some of the UK’s most exciting jazz-influenced musicians. Drawing on years of surveying and curating different corners of music, Matsuura deftly combines this talented pool of players into one singular, wide-ranging album.

A co-founder of Japan’s United Future Organisation (aka U.F.O.), this new record sees Matsuura reconnect with longstanding friend and collaborator Gilles Peterson. Releasing the album via Brownswood Recordings in the UK, it’s a continuation of a relationship which started as a bridge between London’s then-blossoming jazz scene and Tokyo’s new musical vanguard of the early ‘90s. This album continues that two-way dialogue between Japan and the UK.

The project is focused on covers, putting classic or influential tracks in a new context, spanning a cross-section of Matsuura’s taste. On ‘Black Gold of the Sun’, Cuban vocalist Daymé Arocena fronts a new take on the Rotary Connection classic, along with a band – guided by Tom Skinner – that features her prodigious Havana-based players. Elsewhere, Byron Morris and Unity’s ‘Kitty Bey’, a Dingwalls classic, is knocked into a tight, high energy new shape (by a band that includes Yussef Dayes, Yazz Ahmed and Nubya Garcia.)

The scope of the music reflects the breadth of Matsuura’s interests. It ranges from Bugges Wesseltoft’s Detroit-influenced, dancefloor-minded jazz, stretched out into a more meditative contemplation, to Flying Lotus’ LA-rooted, Brainfeeder beatmaking, translated from laptop-to-live, given a new, equally idiosyncratic lease of life. Elsewhere, Carl Craig’s iconic ‘At Les’ is taken in a looser direction, the overtones of euphoria cast in a different hue.

They’re touchpoints which hint at interests in the different, diffuse corners of electronic music, and how they connect to jazz and improvisation. Coming to this project from the perspective of a DJ, producer and curator, it’s an album that shows his grasp of the bigger picture. This album shows him finding the threads which connect those different scenes together, exploring a to-and-fro – between live, played instruments, and the possibilities found in laptops and samplers – which has long been a backdrop to music aimed at dancefloors.

Delicious Sequence / Some Day - Inc. Sobek / Sasha Dive Remixes

Brand new music from the capital here, Flow 2 The Floor presenting an EP of mixed house music from Hungary's Captain Knuckles & J Prorok alongside remixes from established producers Sobok and Sasha Dive. "Delicious Sequence" gets us underway with dreamy chime melodies cascading through reversed guitar sequences, reverb drenched vox and a very ethereal atmosphere. The psychedelic yet dancefloor nature of the track recalls classic Deep Dish DJ sets: hypnotic, expansive and kicking. Fellow Hungarian Sobek remixes the track, pulling out the tribal elements and locking us into a mesmerizing tom tom passage onto which he layers up male voice chants and steadily rising arpeggios. The resulting breakdown halfway through the tracks sees the intensity levels soar as the concentric arps and crashing white noise snares converge on the mix. Again, one for the house heads of the early 00's, this one recalls a mid-session Osunlade or Danny Tenaglia with its unrivalled primal power. Flip the disc and we're treated to a grinding tech-house workout courtesy of "Some Day". This one has the white isle's infamous superclubs inscribed into its DNA - sweaty, main room tech house with the perfect balance of tension, drama and big drops. Low pads bubbling away, swinging hats and stupendously catchy technoid refrains; think Carl Cox at Space and you're there! Frankfurt house royalty, Sasha Dive remixes "Some Day" for the EPs final track. Stylishly conjuring up another slice of simmering yet driving tech-house, Dive utilizes the bubbling low end pads wonderfully, creating new rhythms as he wraps a buoyant 4/4 around the stems.

Close To The Noise Floor - Formative UK Electronica 1975-1984

Two years in the making, Close To The Noise Floor is a 4CD, 61-track set exploring the origins of electronica in the UK. Featuring tracks from key figures on the cassette label underground alongside early releases by future stars of the movement, this is part primitive rave, part synthesiser porn & part history lesson. Enthralled by the mysterious electronics of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Gong & German Kosmische artists such as Tangerine Dream, Harmonia & Cluster, & inspired by the DIY ethos of punk, a quiet revolution took place across the UK in the late 70s & early 80s. The rise of the microchip & the advent of affordable synthesisers enabled countless artists for whom guitars, drums & bass had become old hat, & in grubby bedsits, unremarkable living rooms & art school halls across the British Isles, UK electronica was born.

Exploring every corner of this fascinating & often overlooked chapter in musical history. For proto synth-pop look no further than 100% Manmade Fibre & Spoon Fazer, whilst British Standard Unit & Five Times Of Dust lay out techno templates which wouldn’t take full form until many years later. Elsewhere, the synthesiser laden ambient music of Zorch & the found sound collages of A Tent sit comfortably alongside early forays by familiar names – Blancmange, The Human League, OMD & Throbbing Gristle – in over four hours of futurist, entirely modern music.

The Wombats follow their Top 5 album ‘This Modern Glitch’ with the release of their third full-length ‘Glitterbug’ via 14th Floor Records / Warner Bros. Records. Already named as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record, the album’s lead single ‘Greek Tragedy’ was accompanied by a darkly compelling video in which one young fan takes her obsession with the band to disturbing extremes. Produced by Mark Crew (Bastille) and The Wombats – frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis – the album’s themes were inspired by core songwriter Murph’s experiences in Los Angeles. Drawn to the city’s mix of “opulence and anxiety”, his songwriting for the album focused upon the idea of writing about a tumultuous relationship with a fictional woman from Los Angeles.

“That became the main inspiration for most of the songs, this false world that I’d created for myself,” he explains. “As time progressed, I’d go to L.A. more and more, and the idea kept on building. The album’s about the envy and the struggle and the pretence and the worry and the fear that L.A. – and every major city in the world – encompasses.”

Approximately halfway through the writing process, events conspired to curve full-circle from fiction into fact when Murph started dating a seemingly unattainable woman from the city. And so imaginary stories evolved into real life concerns: the fading embers of his relationship back in London and the challenges of maintaining a long distance relationship. Instrumentally, most of the songs took one of two directions: back in Liverpool, bassist Tord and drummer Dan’s rush of creativity would result in them delivering backing tracks as a foundation for Murph to then build upon in L.A. or London; alternatively Murph would develop the essence of a song on guitar or piano for the band to collectively flesh out. Despite the initial geographic displacement of the trio, subsequent sessions at Mark Crew’s London studio demonstrated that The Wombats’ inter-band dynamics are as strong as ever before.

‘Greek Tragedy’ floats an East Asian-infused synth riff over booming, distorted drum beats, while another immediate stand-out, the uplifting ‘Give Me A Try’ (inspired by Murph’s blossoming new relationship) represents the band’s most positive lyric to date. Other highlights include the elastic bass and pulsating disco rhythm that permeates throughout ‘Be Your Shadow’; the almost unrecognisably different ‘Emoticons’; and ‘This is Not A Party’ which addresses Murph’s swing from celebratory hedonism to a borderline existential crisis over the course of some “fairly sizeable” nights out in the summer of 2013.

                    Young Galaxy

Privileged Poor - Factory Floor / Toy / Dan Lissvik Remixes

Limited edition Young Galaxy ‘Privileged Poor’ remix 12” featuring Factory Floor, TOY and Dan Lissvik (Studio). Debut release from new label, 586.

Young Galaxy’s ‘Privileged Poor’ is taken from the Polaris Music Prize short-listed album 'Ultramarine'. Factory Floor's remix comes hot on the heels of the band’s acclaimed debut album on DFA, and has similar sound designs. Their mix strips away the vocals, pads and pop touches, leaving us with a taut, driving analogue techno / house number. If you didn't know it was a remix you would think it was one of Factory Floor's own tracks. TOY’s Dom and Ale continue to emerge as world class remixers as they transform 'Privileged Poor' into a hypnotic, motorik psychedelic freak out. While less synthy than the original, Dan Lissvik keeps the pop edges of the original and an extra bump for the dancefloor.

                    Dobie Gray

Out On The Floor / The 'In' Crowd

Outta Sight herald the new year with two fabulous floor-packers from the glory days of Northern Soul.

First up is Dobie Gray's “Out On The Floor”. This absolute classic has it all; the perfect lyric married to the perfect dance beat, and now made even better by having Dobie Gray’s perennial mod / soul anthem “The ‘In’ Crowd” on the flip side. These two icons of the scene are brought together for the first time… Northern soul heaven!

                      All The Young

                      Welcome Home

In Stoke’s All The Young, we find a band for a generation that's lying twitching on the floor, wailing out for a hit of heady, heavy r 'n' r. Formed by the Dooley brothers, All The Young are - frontman Ryan Dooley, bassist Jack Dooley, drummer Will Heaney and guitarist David Cartwright.

"The thing is, I can understand as much as anyone right now why there's been a lull in proper guitar tunes," states Ryan. "People have been waiting for something bigger to come along. When there’s a lull it made me want it more and fuelled the hunger for it." It's with that same faultless drive, determination and ambition that All The Young burst into the world with an album of brick-breaking powerhouse sounds, brought into catastrophic dimensions by none other than rawk royalty GGGarth Richardson, the man responsible for classic albums from Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Biffy Clyro. A fitting collaboration for a band whose whole manifesto chimes with the age-old tale of the lads from a nowhere town, singing about something better than what's outside their door.

All The Young are readying their own day of reckoning, with a genuine moment of perfect anthemia.

                        The Wombats

                        Tokyo (Vampires And Wolves)

Produced by Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age Lostprophets) "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)" adds an array of new sounds (including sweeping synths and an insistent bassline) to the band’s famously immediate songwriting.

                          Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)
Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves) (Grum Remix)

                          Bright Eyes

                          Noise Floor

"Noise Floor" collects selected Bright Eyes singles, one-offs, unreleased tracks, collaborations and covers recorded between 1998 and 2005. Variously recorded to cassette four-track, minidisc, reel-to-reel tape machine, ADAT and computer, these songs trace Bright Eyes' evolution from basement project to band of international repute. Many of these gems previously lost to out-of-print obscurity are hereby resurrected.

                            Ray Lamontagne

                            Till The Sun Turns Black

This is a super follow-up to his much-loved debut and whilst the warm, woody soulfulness of primetime Van Morrisson still shines through there's enough new ground covered to prove that he is indeed a major talent in the making. There's country and blues to add to his rustic soul music, this time with echoes of John Lennon or even Ryan Adams. There's some unsettling, sparse stuff here too; it's an occasionally challenging as well as a comforting listen. Fans are going to love this record!

                              Floor

                              Dove

It's only taken 10 years from it's original recording in 1994 for Floor's debut LP to get released. God knows what happened in the meantime. Worth the wait though - this is a raw, pulverising, creeping wall of chaos characterised by a double headache guitar assault and raging vocals. The sonic equivalent of being slowly, but badly beaten up.
