EXTRA SOUL PERCEPTION

Setwun returns with 'Visions in Venus', his debut EP for Extra Soul Perception, a four-track body of soul-rooted expression and rhythmic finesse that blends groove, emotion and instrumental mastery in equal measure.

For fans of SAULT, Michael Kiwanuka and Me'shell Ndegeocello, this EP creates a familiar warmth but with Setwun's distinct sonic fingerprint. With deep ties to Sydney's underground and a sound that draws from broken beat, jazz, funk and future R&B,Visions in Venusshowcases the next step in the evolution of a producer who refuses to sit still.

The EP opens with "Undisputed", a deep, driving groove built around a locked-in rhythm section and an undeniable bassline. Snappy live drums, a soulful vocal hook, and layers of expert instrumentation create a statement of confidence from an artist in full flow.

Next comes "Honesty", a textured and quietly intense piece that unfolds with warmth and purpose. Percussion dances around a bed of layered instrumentation, allowing space for reflection and movement alike, in a track that holds emotional weight while staying rhythmically agile.

"Venus", the title track, follows with a shift into introspection - a soulful ballad carried by a beautiful guitar lick and delicate textures. It's wistful and graceful, capturing a tender mood with understated elegance.

The EP closes with" Work It Out", a slick, low-slung future funk jam. A hypnotic bassline blends seamlessly with a hooky vocal refrain that ties together a coherent and expansive body of work

Known in Sydney for his work as a DJ, producer and live bandleader with The Soulstranauts, Setwun (Josh Panakera-Molony) has long been navigating the spaces between genres.Visions in Venusfeels like a culmination of that journey: refined, playful and full of heart.

Lynda Dawn

Roses

Lynda Dawn and XL Middleton collaborate on boogie 7" 'Roses' for Extra Soul Perception. London soul singer Lynda Dawn returns with her first release since being tipped by The Guardian as one of their 'Ones To Watch' in 2021.

Following her participation in the first ESP writing camp in Nairobi 2019, 'Roses' was originally released on 'New Tangents…Vol. 1' EP alongside four other tracks with artists from the UK, Kenya and Uganda.

As part of the label's commitment to international collaboration, 'Roses' 7" brings two artists together for the first time, united by their love for boogie. To accompany the original, Lynda collaborated remotely with L.A. producer and record shop owner XL Middleton for an up-tempo flip, mixing g-funk and 90s RnB.

The 'Roses' 7" is Extra Soul Perception's second release of 2021, following on from 'Bad Meditation', the debut album from former Electric Wire Hustle frontman Mara TK.
