Supreme Dicks

The Emotional Plague

The second album from The Supreme Dicks, available on vinyl for the first time.

Falling somewhere between Captain Beefheart, Throbbing Gristle and SALEM in the lineage of musicians who’ve found a muse in the nasty, brutish brevity of life, Supreme Dicks chose to cloak disarmingly real paranoia and grief in the contemporary trappings of late '80s and early '90s lo-fi college rock. They may have inhabited the same sonic and physical space as colleagues like Dinosaur Jr (Lou Barlow was an occasional Dick, and at least one early Dinosaur Jr show was actually played by Dicks in disguise), but they stripped away all youthful yearning and anticipation in favor of a bleak and unblinking certainty. Honest, frank, and free of ironic distance. Obtuse and yet so essential that it can’t help but feel familiar to anyone who’s ever spent a sleepless night wondering whether there's any point to all of this. And, on occasion, warm, intimate and lovely.

The Supreme Dicks formed while students at Massachusetts’ Hampshire College in the twilight of the Reagan era. The campus was a fractured posthippie free-for-all that many students theorized was a right- wing think tank experiment in pitting progressives against each other. The constantly revolving lineup centered around songwriters Daniel Oxenberg and Jon Shere, and whoever else was around and willing to torture an instrument. They advocated the teachings of Wilhelm Reich and were vocal about focusing their creative energy via celibacy. This may do much to explain the constant, unrelenting tension that provides the driving force behind the most powerful moments in their music. Regardless of tempo or arrangement, Supreme Dicks songs play like soundtracks to autoerotic asphyxiation, haunting tones that ring in the ears at the moment consciousness is lost and not guaranteed to return.

Ethernet

Opus 2

Developing on the trance-induction and brainwave entrainment techniques explored on the first Ethernet album 144 Pulsations Of Light, Opus 2 moves into deeper, more introspective and emotive territory.

A stronger focus on melody and harmonic structure results in pieces that almost approach, but never quite arrive at, traditional song forms, while still leaving much to the imagination of the listener, evading mental categorization and revealing new sonic experiences with each listen.

The bulk of recording took place during the darkest months of winter in the Pacific Northwest, between late-night shifts providing technical support for hospital operating rooms. The pieces on the album each formed gradually and spontaneously during extended improvised sonic meditations as part of the composer's own trancework (or self-hypnosis) practice, this in an effort to remove specific compositional intention from the process, instead just allowing them to "happen".

If 144 Pulsations... was about expansion of awareness and opening to the light that surrounds us, Opus 2 is intended to induce inner contemplation and internalized focus on the light within us. It is also a statement on the gradual darkening and inexorable decay of our modern world, and the need to look within to find true support and sustenance from one's own energetic source. Patience and perseverance.

The Primitives

Everything's Shining Bright - The Lazy Recordings 1985-1987

Compiled with guitarist PJ Court, this 2-CD compilation boasts re-mastered music as well as a beautifully annotated booklet boasting rare photos and personal memories from the band.

Back in the mid-80s, The Primitives combined the fuzz guitars of The Jesus & Mary Chain with the pop sensibilities of Blondie and a nod to cult heroes The Velvet Underground. They swiftly rose from being a popular Indie guitar outfit to charting worldwide with “Crash”, kickstarting a craze in bands fronted by blonde female singers (Transvision Vamp, The Darling Buds et al).

Between 1985 and 1987, the band issued five singles/EP’s on independent label Lazy Records (also home to My Bloody Valentine and later Birdland) before signing with RCA.

This 2-CD set also boasts their promo-only live album at the ICA; as such, it offers their entire Lazy output from that period.

The London Dirthole Company

Modern Ist EP

The giant avalanche that is THE LONDON DIRTHOLE COMPANY is back with another slab of prime-time partisan punk noise. With a Futurist disdain and Dadaist sense of sardonic humour, the MODERN IST EP celebrates the realities of the Family Of Noise as a truly interactive social experiment. The genuinely odd bunch of protagonists that make up the bands personnel stretch the boundaries of conventional group structure and methods. A truly outsider approach that reverberates with its nebulous intensity and spirit of joy. The result is a fractious cacophony created (on this record) by four drummers, 3 guitarists a bass player and 2 different vocalists. Live the band rotate up to a dozen singers if occasion and availability conspire. The music has elements and attitudes in common with The Monks, Velvet Underground, Pussy Galore and The Fall without any direct plagiarism or imitation. These bands are but ships in the night to the Battleship Dirthole and its crew of desperate fellows. PROFESSOR THE CONFESSOR is an intimate memoir of utterances from the dark recesses of The Professor’s mind. CRYING ONIONS is a sleazy ballad of all-consuming pleasure, timeless romance, sensual purgatory, erotic possession, empty tears, disrobing and eating an onion. TOMORROW, TODAY faces up to the bleak realities of a passion consumed and the vagaries of the staring up from the gutter as you watch your former partner dance the same dance you fell for with someone else. The strapping fit and healthy London Dirthole Company pedigree on this recording; The Nuns, Pulkas, Echobelly, Headbutt, Felix Moment Power Trio, Lot Lizards, Project Dark, Headcleaner.

Killer Nu Groove / 90's NYC House style tracks on Tartelet

B FROM E (Frej Garcia Levin) represents a new generation of talented young artists making waves in Copenhagen. Of Mexican-Danish descent, and born and raised in the notorious tower blocks of the south-western suburbs of Copenhagen, the 27-year old is on the up-and- up. In high demand as the founder of boom bap rap group NATKAT, producer of pop outfit Ny Sensei (New Sensei) and head of tape-only label Buddahood, the multi-talent seems to have a hand in everything at the moment. His 2017 debut ‘Porno TR-XXX’ (C.U.P) saw some of the hottest names in the game spinning B FROM E at last year’s Dekmantel festival, resulting in offers from several well-known record labels.

His new record on Tartelet Records comes as four cuts exploring different paths of the garage house sound. The opener ‘Dark Energy’ is fueled by filthy breaks and a nostalgic theme that would not be out of place in an early Atari computer game. ‘The People (Dream Mix)’ is a trippy tour through subtle layered melodies, carried by a stripped-back groove.

On the B-side you will find ‘Positive Sister (2605 Tool)’: a chunky cut with a serious bassline. Saving the best for last, ‘You Will See’, rounds off the record in style. A feel-good tune that is sure to get plenty of spins this summer. HOT TIP!

Originally dropped in 2016 on Aiwo Rec., Forum's self-titled EP became one of those secret weapons whispered about in after-hours corners. It's a hazy blend of dusty drum machines, rolling 303s and dreamy breaks that bottled the spirit of Germany's late-night underground at the height of the so-called "outsider house" wave. Now back via WARNING, this reissue keeps everything intact, from the tropical drift of 'Yucatan' to the sheer groove hypnosis of 'Space Train.' It's an EP that moves between house, breakbeat and sunrise euphoria with a knowing hand. A modern cult classic reborn.

Frenchman Franck Roger is as consistent as any of the deep house greats we have all loved and appreciated for many years. He returns to Seasons Limited with another EP of perfectly timeless sounds to back that up. Opening up this latest gem is 'Don't Make Me Wait', which is shimmering and candlelit, with wispy pads and aching vocal cries occasionally bursting out of the mix. 'The Number Track' has a more pronounced groove with lumpy kicks and this time neon chords bubble through nicely for zoned-out late-night hypnosis. 'Fast Lane' closes with a more insular and dark feel that takes you back to the early days of Chicago house with a devastating synth conveying great loneliness.

Rahaan

Dancing In Space Edits Vol 4

Australia's Dancing in Space crew have thus far kept their vinyl releases to a minimum, reappearing every so often with a fresh batch of their own excellent disco edits. Here they try something different, delivering a typically assured two tracker from one of the most talented and productive scalpel fiends in the business, Chicago scene stalwart Rahaan. A-side 'Allright' is a typical Rahaan rub, with the talented re-editor skilfully rearranging and lightly dubbing out what sounds like a turn-of-the-80s fusion of classic disco, synth-splattered boogie and soaring jazz-funk. On 'My Strategy', he successfully breathes new life into an old Philadelphia International favourite, opting for a largely instrumental extension that subtly pitches the track up, tempo wise, for greater dancefloor pleasure.

The Mr K Edits

Golden / Umi Says

As you will already know if you're a regular reader of these reviews, Mr. K treats the edit like surgery. He's precise and almost invisible while working entirely in service of the song. The A-side of his latest splices Jill Scott's 'Golden' against an unreleased 2005 Blackbeard breakdown with strings sweeping in before a tambourine acapella strips it back to bone. Flip it over and Mos Def's 'Umi Says' gets a full extra minute of runway with swirling Weldon Irvine Jr. keys, a superb bassline coiling underneath and vocals held just out of reach. Two neo-soul monuments immaculately reworked.

Qué Les Pasó A Mis Amigos? EP

Across the EP, Ela Minus and Nick León channel heartbreak, fractured friendships, disillusionment, and perseverance into a collection of songs that are melancholic yet relentlessly in motion.

With 'Qué Les Pasó A Mis Amigos?' — mixed by Patrick Holland and mastered by Heba Kadry — the pair embraced experimentation without expectation, creating music that not only expands both of their artistic worlds, but also lays the groundwork for future collaborations.

Scarlet Rebels

Flawed By Design

Sometimes a little pressure can be a good thing. For Scarlet Rebels, the task of following up two acclaimed albums that crashed into the UK Top 20 and turned the Welsh four-piece into one of the most talked-about rock bands of the last 10 years was a challenge they were determined to rise to.

The result is Scarlet Rebels’ electrifying fourth album, F'lawed By Design'. With frontman Wayne Doyle plus his brother, drummer Gary Doyle, guitarist Chris Jones and bassist Carl Oag teaming up once again with producer Chris Clancy, it sees the Llanelli band deliver 11 anthemic songs that combine the powerful with the personal.

'Flawed By Design' is the sound of a band at the top of their game, from Wayne’s emotive vocals and lyrics, to the powerhouse rhythm section and Chris Jones’ blazing guitar. Yet there’s an emotional core to 'Flawed By Design' that runs even deeper than its arena-sized ambition. By the band’s own admission, it’s the most introspective record they have ever written. It‘s that marriage of ambition, emotion and human connection that defines both 'Flawed By Design' and Scarlet Rebels themselves.

“I want us to be recognized for the depth of our material,” says Wayne. “I want us to be known as a band that writes heartfelt songs that resonate and touch people. We want to move people physically, but we want to move them emotionally too.”

With 'Flawed By Design', Scarlet Rebels have done just that.

Owen Cutts

Have You Ever Heard Old Music? : 52 Essential Records You Need In Your Life

In an era where technology threatens the art of songwriting and production, 'old' music matters more than ever. Those classic songs from decades ago that still carry so much power are each totally unique, but all were shaped by immense skill, hard work, and moments of pure creative inspiration. Now, esteemed producer Owen Cutts - who has brought his infectious passion to the world through his Old Music Friday series - opens up his record collection to share 52 essential, groundbreaking songs that anyone who cares about music should hear.

From Minnie Ripperton to The Delfonics, The Beatles to Aretha Franklin, Al Green to Dusty Springfield, Owen picks apart the craft behind each song, and delves into why these recordings still cut through the noise and connect so deeply with listeners. This is a book for anyone looking to expand their sonic horizons, understand the creative process and lose themselves in great music. It's about songs that refuse to age, and why they still resonate all these years later.

Mitski

Puberty 2 - 10th Anniversary Edition

Ask Mitski Miyawaki about happiness and she'll warn you: “Happiness fucks you.” It's a lesson that's been writ large into her gritty, outsider songwriting for years, but never so powerfully as on her 2016 album, 'Puberty 2'. “Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one's almost more destructive than the other,” she says. “When you realize you can't have one without the other, it's possible to spend periods of happiness just waiting for that other wave.” On 'Puberty 2', that tension is palpable: a beautiful and brutal romantic hinterland, in which one of modern music’s defining voices came fully into focus.

2026 marks the ten-year anniversary of that landmark album, whose tracklist contains fan favorites 'Your Best American Girl' and 'I Bet on Losing Dogs'. To celebrate the occasion, Mitski and Dead Oceans release a limited-edition reissue of 'Puberty 2' on Forest Shadow vinyl.

Editors

Surface, Echo & Sound

Following on from 2022’s EBM, a collaboration with electronic producer Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass, on Surface, Echo & Sound, Editors have found themselves somewhere new entirely. When the band regrouped in summer 2025 to work on a follow-up, after three albums written and recorded very much as in-the-studio projects, Editors felt they wanted to go back to a more natural approach, something that harked back to their earliest days, sat in a practice room in Stafford, facing each other as they worked through songs together.

Like on last year’s solo record There is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light, frontman Tom Smith took a similar stripped back, acoustic-based approach to the new Editors material, bringing a selection of songs to the band for them to play together, trying different things out, and seeing where they went. In terms of creating the record, “It was a very productive summer,” says Smith. “The sun was out for the most part, we were in greenest Gloucestershire, not far from where I live, on this innocuous little industrial estate – it was pretty much the opposite of being in Berghain!”

Their minimalist approach delivers an explosive, genre- defying sound that is equal parts chaotic, precise, and unmistakably original.

Reflecting on the 16th studio album, frontman E says: “All of this will be forgotten. Every joy, accomplishment and hardship will one day become so irrelevant it will be as if none of it occurred. Calibro 35

Ellroy VS L.A. - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Cinematic Visionaries Calibro 35 and Noir Master James Ellroy Pay Homage to L.A. with a Pure Crime-Funk Original Soundtrack.

There are collaborations that feel inevitable like they were waiting to happen in some shadowed corner of culture. The union between Italian cinematic funk visionaries Calibro 35 and internationally acclaimed master of noir fiction and New York Times bestselling author James Ellroy is undoubtedly one of them.

When Calibro 35 were invited to compose the original soundtrack for Francesco Zippel’s documentary 'Ellroy vs L.A.', they didn’t simply write music for film. They stepped directly into Ellroy’s universe the most dangerous corners of American crime fiction and discovered, to no one’s surprise, that its darkness felt strangely familiar.

Twelve brand new tracks of cinematic crime funk, psychedelia, and hypnotic groove that don’t accompany Ellroy’s world so much as inhabit it. The soundtrack’s move through Ellroy’s fictional and real-world mythologies with deliberate precision. Stylistically, the album finds Calibro 35 in their most natural yet most cinematic state: crime funk, psychedelia, and hypnotic groove pushed into darker, more narrative-driven territory by the weight of Ellroy’s world. From the gloomy, suspense-laden groove of the opener Black Dahlia to the evocative closing piece Moonlight Sonative, the album unfolds as a complete cinematic arc, showcasing Calibro 35 at their very best. L.A. Confidential delivers a super-suspenseful, thrilling tension that feels like a chase through neon-lit streets, while Riots erupts into explosive cinematic funk, capturing chaos and urban unrest in full force.

'LSD on Sunset Boulevard' drifts into a hazy, instrumental soul journey psychedelic, warm, and disorienting, like a late-night hallucination of the city itself. #The Big Nowhere (Part I & II)# expands the narrative into a slow-burning, atmospheric descent, unfolding like a two-act crime saga. 'Welcome to the Land of Vacation and Probation' hits with kick-ass, uptempo crime-funk madness, urgent and relentless in its propulsion, while 'White Jazz' is a mood of suspended, noir-infused jazz tension cool, shadowy, and unresolved. Together, the tracks map Los Angeles as a fractured yet hypnotic landscape suspended between glamour and violence, beauty and decay, myth and reality.

Alice Cooper

Devil On My Shoulder

The definitive autobiography from Alice Cooper, the Godfather of Shock Rock and one of the world's most iconic musicians with a career spanning six decades.

George Harrison

The Third Eye

George Harrison's own intimate, beautiful collection of more than two hundred never-before-collected photos of the Beatles at work and at play – the vast majority published for the first time. From 1963 to 1969, George Harrison travelled the world with his bandmates, Pentax in hand, chronicling their impossible path from Liverpool to Ed Sullivan, Adelaide to Rishikesh, the Eiffel Tower to the beaches of Tahiti and beyond. In this extraordinary collection of George’s personal photos and 8mm film stills – curated by Olivia Harrison, George’s widow – are singular images of Paul, John, Ringo, and George and the band’s friends and entourage as they rocketed to stardom and fostered the joyful madness that came to be known as Beatlemania.

This revelatory, beautifully designed book takes the reader along on their first plane ride to the US, motorcades through the Australian outback, shopping trips in Paris, and more. The candid, unguarded photos, brimming with a Harrison’s wit, intelligence and penchant for experimentation (he was enamoured of selfies, long before the iPhone), and snapped in those rare moments out of the spotlight offer a remarkable, inside look at the human beings behind the Beatles, trying to hold onto themselves – and enjoy themselves – while standing at the centre of the storm. The Third Eye opens a window into the world of the Beatles – and the transformative cultural moment that they sparked – through the singular artistic vision of George Harrison.

Robert Elms

Blitz: The Club That Created The Eighties

A history of the club that set the '80s alight, by the much-loved presenter, writer and Blitz attendee Robert Elms. The short-lived Blitz club in London's Covent Garden was more than somewhere to hang out or be seen: it was a catalyst for cultural explosion, a counter-culture blast against everything Thatcher's leadership had ushered in by the dawn of the 80s.

Tuesday nights boasted a ferocious, fearless cast - from Boy George and Spandau Ballet to Grayson Perry and Peter Doig, to Michele Clapton, Sade and John Galliano. This was the vanguard of a different England; socially liberal, loud, proud and diverse, fiercely individualistic and determined to succeed. Britain was black and white; the Blitz Kids switched on the colour.

In Blitz, Elms reflects on a club night founded by working-class kids, one whose impact reverberated beyond its doors, through the worlds of Art, Literature, Fashion and Music, and into the present day.

Looking Backwards Towards The Future : The Story Of Ultravox

With a foreword by Moby. Looking Backwards Towards the Future: The Story of Ultravox is the first authorised biography of post-punk mavericks turned commercial superstars, Ultravox. Written with the cooperation of the band's surviving core members, it is the definitive account of one of Britain's most eccentric, unusual and uncompromising groups.

Drawing from a vast archive of research materials and exclusive input from the band, their peers, their label and management, Looking Backwards Towards the Future details the fractures, fallouts, ambition and ego that followed their career. From their experimental, art-school beginnings as post-punk outsiders, to their rebirth as chart-conquering heroes, Ultravox always remained unique. Derided by the mainstream media throughout their career, the band remained unwavering in their pursuit of an eccentric trajectory of their own design, achieving success and millions of record sales, always on their own terms.

Sleeping Beauties: Why Go Dormant And How They Wake Up - Signed Edition

SUPER LIMITED SIGNED COPIES

A book about creative genius from the Talking Heads co-founder and author of How Music Works.

A 'Sleeping Beauty' is a brilliant idea that is ahead of its time.

So many breakthroughs in arts or science were like this, lost on their initial audience and only later revived and acknowledged to be great.

This book asks, why do some ideas fall asleep? And how do they wake up?

We love to believe in a meritocracy of ideas - that greatness is always recognised, innovation always seized upon and rewarded. Yet so many of the people we now recognise as the world's great creators initially got little traction for their work. It was only later, often much later, that their work comes roaring back to life and made a lasting impact.

Discoveries as diverse as dark matter to continental drift, technologies from solar panels to the steam...

These Wicked Rivers

Fire & Folklore

Established in 2014, These Wicked Rivers have emerged as one of the UK’s most compelling forces in the recent rock resurgence. Hailing from Derby and drawing influence from the well of rock legends and blues greats, the band have made quite an impact since their inception with their unique brand of blues-infused modern rock. With a reputation for soulful-bordering-on-spiritual live performances and timeless songcraft the band have built unstoppable momentum in recent years.

2026 is set to mark a landmark chapter for the quintet, with their hotly-anticipated third album 'Fire and Folklore'. The record was recorded in the band's hometown of Belper in Derbyshire, at Andy Sneap's home studio. With the Grammy-winning Sneap (Judas Priest, Saxon, Megadeth) and Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Massive Wagons, Those Damn Crows) at the helm, it's the band 's most accomplished record to date. Expanding beyond their signature wizard-blues rock sound, 'Fire and Folklore' pushes into new sonic territory, blending in shades of country and Southern spirit while retaining the groove and soul that defines the band. The record also features a special guest appearance from fellow Derby artist, country starlet Kezia Gill.

Loved dearly by a rapidly growing "Family" of fans, and armed with a homegrown record with its sights set firmly on the global stage, These Wicked Rivers are poised to reach new heights. Jump on in and enjoy!

Johnny Marr

The Age Of Everything

'The Age Of Everything' is Johnny Marr's fifth full length studio record. Written in London, developed live on the road across the East Coast of North America and recorded in Manchester, 'The Age Of Everything' captures the energy and tensions of the city. Sharp, fast and dynamic, filled with ideas and possibilities.

“This is the record that’s been the most cathartic. The title came to me early in the process and became an inescapable idea. It seemed to sum up the way I think a lot of people are feeling. It’s all encompassing, but it's not necessarily a negative statement. There’s a sense of overwhelm in the culture brought about by technology, but looking at it with a different light, there could also be a sense of possibility.” Johnny Marr

Emily A. Sprague

Cyano

In 'Cyano', Emily A. Sprague builds an intricate world, expanding a sonic register that is both familiar and viscerally new, reflecting the synthesist and composer’s internal register with mirrors to alternate realms. 'Cyano' was conjured through ideas of an imagined planet whose inhabitants are rebuilding forbidden capacities for expressivity and emotional connection. An arc of faithful gestures, 'Cyano' is meditation on visibility, psychic transformation, light transmission, and worlds beyond our knowing. It revels in configurations of connective possibility, where shadow and vision meet incisive truth.

In a pivotal moment of re-engaging film photography around 2019, Sprague became transfixed by cyanotypes and the work of Anna Atkins, a botanist and photographer who documented flowers through cyano methods. The emotional tenor of Atkins’ images sparked narrative threads of a character who lived on a faraway planet, ‘Cyano’—once like Earth—destroyed by misunderstanding and forced into a pseudo-mutuality that eschewed individuality for assimilated symbiosis. Through sensitive attempts, the Cyanic character reintroduces autonomous desire, empathic drive, and authentic expression to their world —part memory, grain, and symbol. Through 'Cyano', Sprague seeks to find a sonic and environmental palette for what this world felt like: familiar yet utterly foreign, sounds that might seem like piano or guitar, but not quite; a continuum that bridges various relational territories—with self, other, ecology, and life in a distant world. 'Cyano' yields an egress for conjuring expressivity, a tool to bridge understanding amidst spectacular and abrading textures of an evolving world.

Sprague’s musical approach is marked by a deeply personal atmosphere, rooted in unearthing histories of self and other—modes of intrapersonal and interpersonal connection—and the mercuriality of these attempts. Through intimate phenomenological exploration, 'Cyano' offers subtle and striking textures that embrace vulnerability. Studio recordings and performances alike serve as a vehicle for Sprague to connect meaningfully with listeners across time, tethered in emotional coherence despite disparate geographies. On 'Cyano', all sounds are synthesized, with no samples or acoustic instruments, and the record introduces singing into Sprague’s previously-instrumental personal, a bridging of wordless and lyrical music.

With more 'Cyano' composition in ideation, this album marks a first offering, intentionally primitive and minimal, a static-y transmission from the place very far away where it all resides. Sprague’s search for feeling, language, and sound brings new arrangement to psychic matter, life force running through a riparian garden into the sea. These tracks map feeling and place across the magnetic terrains of interior and conjured world, where knowing is mystery that breaks through to reality.

Andrew Poppy

The Beating Of Wings - 40th Anniversary Edition

40th anniversary edition of Andrew Poppy's The Beating of Wings, originally released on ZTT Records. Hailed as "a major landmark in pop-classical genre-blending and post-minimalism" (Robert Davidson,

Topology) and "..ahead of his time ..he'd fit right in with the Max Richters and Nils Frahms of today" (Steven Wilson; Porcupine Tree, The Album Years podcast).

Composed and produced by Andrew Poppy and performed by his bespoke ensembles, The Beating of Wings contains four mesmeric tracks that mix acoustic orchestral instruments with electric piano, electric guitar, bass guitar, sampler, Fairlight Music Computer and drum machine. Each piece has its own narrative, perspective, musical world and colour held together by an infectious pulse. For this release, the album has been remastered by Stephan Mathieu, and an expanded booklet includes new writing by Andrew Poppy. 2-panel gatefold sleeve, 24 page CD booklet and CD sleeve.

A gateway access to the world of contemporary classical music for fans of Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson and Kraftwerk, a generation of music fans discovered The Beating of Wings as it rubbed shoulders with ZTT's pop artists, The Art of Noise, Propaganda and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. ZTT co-founder Paul Morley wrote in The Quietus, "ZTT needed Poppy as much as it needed Frankie".

Andrew Poppy is post-minimal composer, musician, vocalist, writer, record producer and arranger with a unique body of work and collaborations. He signed to Trevor Horn and Paul Morley's ZTT Records in 1984.

"Poppy's music is like Madagascar - you discover species there you don't find anywhere else." Brian Morton, Wire magazine

"..what you hear in Poppy's music.. is a keen ear for the large-scale, compositional use of timbre - the qualities that drew him to the cutting edge technology of ZTT's studio-based culture. His music's purpose is often revealed more effectively through the multi-tracked recording process. Younger composers may take this for granted but Poppy got there first." John Walters, The Guardian

Howling Bells

Howling Bells - 20th Anniversary Edition

Twenty years after the release of one of the most captivating albums of the 2000s, Howling Bells announce the 20th Anniversary Edition of their self-titled debut album, released on 2nd October via Nude Records.

Originally released in 2006, 'Howling Bells' marked a striking debut for the Australian band Produced by Grammy Award-winning Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Gomez, The Charlatans), the album introduced their cinematic blend of darkly romantic songwriting, atmospheric guitars, and Juanita Stein's unmistakable vocals. Hailed upon release as a moder alternative classic, Pitchfork raised Stein's "thoroughly unexpected, confidently strange, and immediately commanding voice, while NME simply called it "an extraordinary album." The Guardian described it as "bruising, narcotised rock'n'roll, refracted through the bottom of a glass, darkly... on the verge of unequivocal magnificence'. MOJO celebrated "an utterly flawless, heart-twisting vocal throughout," praising her ability to turn "tales of sorrow and betrayal" into "something exquisite," and Clash observed that it's the voice that grabs you," calling it a wonderfully lucid piece of songwriting, emotion lingering on each note.'

Twenty years later, the album retains its intoxicating magic. Still, the opening seconds pull you in; still, the record won't let you go. For the first time ever on vinyl, listeners can experience one of the great alternative debuts of its era in a format worthy of its enduring legacy.

"OK, now I can finally listen to Setting Sun on vinyl and be reminded all over again why I love Howling Bells" Chris Martin.

"There was a time when we thought great records would just keep rolling in. We didn't realize we were living in a golden age until it was gone. Twenty years later, Howling Bells stands as a testament to what we've been missing" Brandon Flowers.

“A haunting, beautiful and at times emotionally brutal debut by one of alt-rock's unsung talents” Brett Anderson.

"Listening to Howling Bells' debut album was a cultural awakening for me back in the early 2000s. It reminded me that writing artful, sophisticated pop music was absolutely possible. Twenty years later, this record still sounds so fresh and exciting" Anna Calvi.

Everyone Says Hi

Funny Cos It's True

Everyone Says Hi return with their second album 'Funny Cos It's True' -- a hook-heavy, groove-forward alt record that expands on the momentum of their acclaimed self-titled debut.

The title says it all: the songs are candid, personal, and lived-in -- delivered with lead singer and songwriter Nick Hodgson's sharp humour and a big-chorus instinct.

'Funny Cos It's True' is eleven tracks of intoxicating indie-pop. Following their acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2024, the record sees the band firmly stepping into their sound. Layered with a hazy retro sound, while sounding distinctly new, the album sees the band rediscover and reinvent a classic sound with a heavy dose of infectiously anthemic choruses and a knack for lustrous songcraft. Lyrically, the album searches deep and resonates on an emotional level, with songs written from the perspective as a parent to his young daughter, and also as a son, following the death of his own father from Alzheimer's.

Sonically, the band sit in a lustrous retro-futurist lane: classic textures and warm psych-pop sheen. Think Steely Dan / R.E.M. / Arcade Fire touchpoints, with the modern alt-rock glow of acts like The War On Drugs and Tame Impala, but always with melody front and centre.

Josefin Öhrn

Cherry

London-based Swedish singer-songwriter Josefin Öhrn (previously of Grammy nominated Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation) debut album 'Cherry' featuring vocals from Bobby Gllespie (Primal Scream) and Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), with guitar from Andy Bell (Ride).

Josefin’s most intimate and self-defined album yet, 'Cherry' explores themes of fresh starts, desire, love and grief. It taps into a new and very interesting phase of music, seen on recent releases from Robyn (Sexistential) and Lykke Li (The Afterparty), where the experiences of women are put out there without shame in colourful candidness, such records tap into a fascinating period of raw, intense and highly transformative self-actualization.

Josefin wrote the songs on 'Cherry' during a new phase of her life, it captures the sense of liberty, excitement and vulnerability that comes with such a re-birth. Explored with an intensity that’s sensual, vulnerable and unguarded. At its core lies the female gaze – not as a concept, but a lived experience with a sense of longing running through the album like a pulse: a longing for connection, for freedom.

Musically, 'Cherry' has echoes of the hypnotic psych-rock of Josefin’s previous band Josefin Ohrn + The Liberation (Rocket Recordings) but the arrangements, structures and mixing on 'Cherry' are less avant-garde and closer to the laid-back atmospheres of Kurt Vile, Lana Del Rey or Natalie Bergman with clear hooks and with Josefin’s voice standing front and centre – intimate, magnetic, unwavering – which allows for the album’s stark emotional immediacy.

Josefin personally asked Kalle Jerneholm Gustavsson (Soundtrack Of Our Lives), who she had worked with previously, to produce the album. “We recorded it in his studio, Svenska Grammofonstudion, Gothenburg. It’s an amazing studio where artists can stay, so I was totally living the album, breathing music every waking and sleeping hour as I was far away from my everyday life in London” explains Josefin. “It was a beautiful experience.”

The Sick Man Of Europe

The Intermittent Signal

The Intermittent Signal is the sound of resistance.

In the year since The Sick Man Of Europe’s debut album was released, the world has moved on. Steady hands have slipped from the levers of power, logic has shifted underground and the message grows more urgent with every passing day.

Repetition has been relearned and the machine rhythms repurposed, this time with increased intensity. Arrangements have moved beyond the bare bones economy of the first record and there’s a newfound melodicism in places. Clarity and conviction ring true through the static and noise, while utopian ideas to remodel a broken system gain traction. This is a rejection of the attention economy and a call to reconnect through community and organisation. Those simple acts that were once commonplace have become increasingly radical as new fractures emerge.

“Through repetition the message has gained weight and become something more urgent,” The Sick Man Of Europe explains. “The vehicle for this message needed to evolve, grow to gain the strength to carry it. We’ve landed on something more expansive, immediate and immersive. Less is more. Until it isn't.”

Trá Pháidín

Cloch 's Claí

Trá Pháidín are a mutable collective of musicians who are geographically, culturally and mentally torn between Conamara Theas, Cathair Chorcaí, Ciarraí, Uíbh Fhailí, Sligeach and Port Láirge, active in one form or another since 2019. The music they make, which to date has mostly been self-released, is of an ambitious breadth, embracing traditional Irish absurdity, jazz, folk and krautrock influences, whilst remaining tantalisingly beyond any one specific understanding of either the world around them or even themselves. More defined however, is their overall conceptual approach, focusing upon original Gaelic music and what lies beyond simply “conas atá tú?”.

Cloch ‘s Claí (trans. Stone & Wall), their first record to be released by World of Echo, develops their established interests into more adventurous waters (and walls!) than ever. Based on the historical significance embedded into dry-stone walls, the album presents a satirical view of Éire’s relationship with her native tongue and the Gaeltacht (regions where Gaeilge - Irish Gaelic - remains the primary language). Constructed of ten tracks, each representative of a stone in a metaphorical stone-wall, Cloch ‘s Claí draws from styles of improvisation in Irish traditional music, exploring avenues of ornamentation and accompaniment in the tradition. As such, the arrangement changes in every performance, a new stone-wall articulated each time - the recording on this album represents just one such arrangement in one such performance. Inspired by Myles na gCopaleen’s An Béal Bocht, the wall comes to embody a variety of themes scattered across the landscape and psyche of na Gaeltachtaí - tokenism, housing, gentry politics, ribbon developments and so on. The result is a music expressive of regional styles in traditional music, krautrock, free jazz, post-rock, minimalism and drone presented in a way that feels instinctively fluid and reflective of a hushed existentialism from the west of Ireland.

On Cloch ‘s Claí, Trá Pháidín are: Conal Ó hAinmhuighe, Ultan Ó Labhradha, Peadar-Tom Mercier, Micheál Fitzgerald, Pól Ó Lionáird, Ruairí De Búrca. Cloch ‘s Claí will be released digitally and as a limited edition LP on 25th September via World of Echo. This record was created through the support of the DEIS Recording Grant & Ealaín na Gaeltachta.

The Yummy Fur

Everybody Talks About The Weather'

The Yummy Fur’s first album of new material in over 25 years is seductive and ambiguous; a fast-paced flip through scenes from art, myth, life and fantasy; a witty whole made from glittering scraps. The band’s original incarnation – fronted by singer, songwriter and guitarist John McKeown from 1992 to 1999 – morphed from making quick-hit cartoon-art songs to Eno and Cale-influenced creepers, populated by characters from McKeown’s life in Glasgow and the films, books and poetry that he lived a parallel life through. Everybody Talks About The Weather delights in using every past iteration of the band as potent collage material: a melee of sounds and ideas existing at once, revealing themselves then dipping back into hiding.

Recorded by the original core trio of McKeown, Brian MacDougall (guitar) and Paul Thomson (drums), Everybody Talks About The Weather comes 17 years after the band reformed for sporadic live shows, and seven years after the release of their sorta-greatest hits compilation Piggy Wings (Rock Action). Ten tracks long with nothing to spare, it is as condensed and vital as their best songs, with a new clarity of sound that allows their ambiguities to come into the light.

The album begins with “Cogs”, a taunting inquisition from within. As McKeown stages a fight between his id and ego, the tension heats up between conversational guitar lines and minimalist repetition; threatening sing-song melody and real, palpable menace. The band members are forced in tandem only to break apart, sustaining a genuine sense of just-hidden danger throughout the whole record – except, arguably, “Headphones”, a looser moment which sees McKeown make an existential something out of nothing while waiting for someone in the car (“I should have brought a book.../My ears are bleeding from the compression on your album”).

The songs are riots of reference: “Unity Over Europe” is a slyly complex two act play about the Mitford sisters – Diana, Unity, and Nancy, in a wink to the YF canon – smashing tragic biographical detail together with allusions to Thomas Pynchon and Francis Bacon. Pynchon is also lifted to serve “Blue Sunshine”, a collision of school shooters, serial killers and fictional fuck-ups (“Fast forward to Compton/Fast forward to Pynchon/Fast forward to Columbine'”) whose buzzy guitar lines are taunting and confrontational like a smarmy teenager. The innocuous title of “My Lasagne” belies a song that exists in several time periods at once: a visit to see Guernica, 50 people with their backs to the portrait of Dora Maar; the time that Picasso painted from; the Reina Sofia and the dirty streets of the Malasaña; myth-making musicians and the myths they’re riffing off overlapping and leering at each other.

All this could be laboured in lesser hands, but cultural verbosity is second nature to The Yummy Fur, who transform all this source material into songs that are weird, sexy, funny and absurd. Meaning is not happily understood or flattened. Susan Sontag's essay Against Interpretation accompanied McKeown as he wrote this album, and she’s paraphrased in “Semolina Ballerina”, the album’s justification of artistic ambiguity. Thomson’s motorik beat leads a gathering of back-and-forth instrumental phrases – including a wiry contribution on saxophone – embodying the futility of trying to parse something definitive from repeated action. “Listen to the very first thing that’s in your head,” Sontag-via-McKeown commands directly, then slinks sideways: “Interpretation is a conversation in an unmade bed”.

The album features two more focused portraits, or at least The Yummy Fur’s version of such a thing. “Wanda” merges the life of filmmaker Barbara Loden and the title character of her semi-autobiographical 1970 feature film, with Loden’s then-husband Elia Kazan joining the fray of no-good men in her film. It’s a mix of adaptation and avant-criticism, with McKeown’s wordplay and mannered pronunciation mirroring the way that non-fiction and fiction twist around each other in the song. The title track is a series of vignettes and impressions from the lives of the band’s ‘90s inner circle, positing painter Mac McNaughton as a kind of Falstaffian ringleader. As with Piggy Wings and the recent single “New T-Shirt”, McNaughton painted the cover of Everybody Talks About The Weather – like the album’s music, the image of a coy girl in a white dress is an uncanny amalgamation of styles, suggestions and references just out of reach, as though seen in an art museum in a dream.

The album ends with two reads of the same frustration. “King of Nothing” is the closest The Yummy Fur will ever get to sludge-rock: the band melts together into a dusty, dreary haze as McKeown drowns in a drudgery of personal struggle (“Two jumpers on in Babylon/And only cats to talk to”) and the rhythmic toppling of heroes (Rowlands, Duvall, Munro). The majority of visible dirt is cleaned off for “Say Hello”, an uncharacteristic depiction of throwing the windows open after a dark night of the soul. Here, the situation is still cold and hard (“When the sun burns gold, but the heat never reaches your fingertips”) but it feels surmountable. Everybody Talks About The Weather is an unpredictable album from an unpredictable group, but ending on a moment of almost uncomplicated light is maybe its biggest surprise. - Claire Biddles (2026)

EYRE LLEW

Bloom

For years, EYRE LLEW were defined by motion.

Cities blurred into one another. Borders became routine. Airports, night drives, ferry ports, backstage rooms, festival fields, hotel corridors, and long-distance journeys stitched together into a single continuous life of movement. Success, such as it existed, was measured in miles travelled, crowds gathered, and momentum sustained. The band moved because they had to. Because stopping felt like failure. Because “making it” always seemed to live somewhere just ahead.

Then the world stopped.

Lockdown didn’t just interrupt EYRE LLEW’s trajectory; it dismantled it. The relentless forward motion that had shaped their identity for over a decade disappeared overnight. Tours vanished. Plans dissolved. The infrastructure of their lives as musicians collapsed into silence. For a band built on movement, it felt devastating.

But in the stillness, something else emerged. Space.

Space to rest.
Space to reflect.
Space to recover.
Space to feel.
Space to choose differently.

What followed wasn’t a dramatic reinvention or a forced comeback narrative — it was a quieter, more human recalibration. A shift away from survival and towards sustainability. Away from proving something, towards building something. Away from chasing momentum, towards choosing meaning.

That shift became 'Bloom'.

Written across lockdown and the years that followed, the album is not a record about absence; it’s a record about presence. About love that feels like home. About stillness as strength. About devotion without spectacle. About grief without melodrama. About healing without performative optimism. About growth that doesn’t announce itself loudly, but happens slowly, privately, and honestly.

Where previous chapters of the band’s story were defined by scale and endurance, 'Bloom' is defined by intimacy and grounding. Its songs are built from small moments rather than big statements: moving cities for love, watching fireworks through a skylight, cycling into blinding sunlight, holding someone through anxiety, losing family dogs, sitting in quiet rooms, imagining futures that feel peaceful rather than impressive.

It’s an album about choosing to stay. Not just in relationships, but in places, in moments, in emotions, in identity.

Sonically, that shift is audible. The music still carries the vastness EYRE LLEW are known for… the cinematic builds, the post-rock weight, the ambient expanses… but it now lives alongside fragility, restraint, silence, and softness. The band no longer sound like they’re trying to overwhelm the listener. They sound like they’re trying to meet them.

Bloom isn’t a comeback record.
It isn’t a reinvention.
It isn’t a redemption arc.
It’s a grounding.

After years of movement, it is EYRE LLEW learning how to stand still and discovering that this is where the real growth starts.

Big Country Redux

Eastworld

The album consists of 10 brand new recordings of Big Country songs originally written or co-written by Stuart Adamson, Tony Butler and Bruce Watson which were released as demoes or sketches, but never previously properly developed or lavished with the attention they deserved.

Bruce Watson said of the 'Eastworld' release, "Some of these songs will be known to the diehards as they have sneaked out from the archives as unfinished demoes or 'internet only' releases, but these are all songs that deserved to be developed further at the time they were written. I am delighted to have now completed them; it is a true privilege to get this newly recorded material out there."

The Big Country Redux line-up includes Bruce Watson (guitar/vocals), his son Jamie Watson (guitar/vocals), Tommie Paxton (vocals/guitar), Chris Stones (bass), and Reece Dobbin (drums).

Kaktus Einarsson

Factoid Happiness

In a world saturated with misinformation and manufactured ideals of fulfilment, ‘Factoid Happiness’ asks a deceptively simple question; what is it that makes us happy? The third album from Icelandic stalwart Kaktus Einarsson, it's a record that seeks its answers in community, equality, and the quiet resilience of family.

Across ten tracks, Kaktus interrogates the systems that increasingly shape our emotional lives; algorithms, social media, and political polarisation. It explores how modern life dilutes attention, erodes certainty, and turns even our happiness into a commodification.

Musically, ‘Factoid Happiness’ is rich and varied, moving between intimate piano-led songwriting, warm indie-rock, funk-leaning grooves, disco-inflected rhythms, and electronic textures. It reflects Kaktus’s background as a songwriter who has moved fluidly between underground experimentation and sophisticated pop. The LP also features contributions from John Grant, RAKEL, Thibault Gomez, and Jessica Winter.

In an era shaped by division and distraction, ‘Factoid Happiness’ argues that family (biological, chosen, romantic, or platonic) is how we stay connected and resist a in fractured world.

McAlmont & Butler

The Sound Of... McAlmont & Butler - 2026 Reissue

It’s just over 30 years ago that former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and ex-Thieves frontman David McAlmont unleashed the extraordinary single ‘Yes’ at the beginning of a summer awash with Britpop and Ibiza rave. With its instant-classic sound, augmented by soaring ’60s strings, it sounded epic and most definitely unlike anything else at the time. Rightly, today it’s considered a stone-cold classic.

When it followed in the December of the same year, the album ‘The Sound Of…’ was an immensely satisfying and beguiling mix of classic songwriting, immaculate production, and blending of rock and soul. The album was also singled out by critics as one of the year’s very best. ‘The Guardian’ newspaper awarded it a maximum 5 stars while ’The Times’’s critic commented: “the monumental climax to the seven-minute-long 'You Do' provides a fitting end both to the album and to a relationship that shook so hard that perhaps it had to shatter.”

Ezra Collective

Here Because Of Hope

Ezra Collective's 'Here Because Of Hope' is the most ambitious and personal record of their career - conceived as a body of work split into three spiritual and geographical movements, the album traces the movement of Black people across continents and decades, from the music of Africa to the rhythms of the Caribbean, and home to the streets of London.

Formed in the youth clubs of London, Mercury Prize and BRIT Award-winners Femi Koleoso, TJ Koleoso, Joe Armon-Jones, James Mollison and Ife Ogunjobi have now spent over a decade making jazz joyful, urgent and undeniable. On 'Here Because Of Hope', they push that vision further than ever, asking a simple but profound question: why does so much Black music born out of pain sound so joyful? Their answer is hope: the belief, carried across generations and oceans, that something better is possible. Anchored by collaborations with Pa Salieu, Lila Iké, Leona Lewis, and reaching across the full breadth of the global African diaspora (including America, where those same African and Caribbean roots gave birth to jazz itself) 'Here Because Of Hope' is a record of remarkable warmth, ambition and humanity, and the sound of Britain's most vital band at the peak of their powers.

Emma Ruth Rundle

These Killing Times

Emma Ruth Rundle is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, visual artist and poet based in Portland, Oregon. Formerly of the Nocturnes and Marriages, she has released five solo albums and is a member of Red Sparowes

Emma Ruth Rundle's These Killing Times is electrifying, emotional and charged with anti-patriarchal feminist rage. The sixth studio album from the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and multi-disciplinary artist is a reactive anthology, bristling, full of life and full of resistance; it asks us questions of our intentions and of the roles we play in the communities we exist within, and how we choose to counter the chokehold of capitalism. Sleepless nights, moments of horror, and times of anguish could be overlaid atop a timeline of recent socio-political events to map the creation of These Killing Times; the rising power of Christian nationalism, the grotesque circus of political discourse, and related ontological discomfort. But there is also love - as a balm and a tonic, a means of escape. A desire for companionship and connection whilst being confronted by the most violent parts of humanity remains an unresolved tension. Written as she watched from afar the devastating effects of yet another climate disaster unfold in early 2025, Emma reflected on the roots of the systemic issues that filter directly into so many catastrophic global events, and made a conscious choice to reach towards making a hopeful record. Where outside forces tempted her to turn inwards, towards isolation and hopelessness, she instead reached outwards to create a record that acknowledges pain, but offers both community and resilience in response.

Seasick Steve

The Last Season Of America

Seasick Steve returns with 'The Last Season Of America'. In 2024, Steve and his wife Elisabeth took a road trip across America where he witnessed the poverty and divisiveness in the context of the upcoming election. They were in a New Orleans club where a house band leader welcomed two Belgian musicians on stage by saying “welcome to the last season of America.”

This became the theme for the rest of their road trip and led to him writing the title track to the new album. A deeply personal, heartfelt reflection on the state of his home nation, 'The Last Season of America' is a protest record in the truest sense.

Scarves

Strays Forever

Ever since Scarves’ inception in 2013, the Seattle-based indie band's lineup continues to evolve with Niko Stathakopoulos at its nucleus as the main storyteller. The revolution of band members follows Niko’s artistic journey in local music communities spanning from coast to coast. His thrilling adventures in the depths of punk venue basements, shopping at record stores, and hanging around house shows allowed Niko to befriend the many talented musicians who would someday contribute to the Scarves roster and discography. Following the release of their 2022 album, 'Delicate Creatures', the band had the pleasure of opening for artists such as PUP, Deerhoof, and the Dodos as well as performing at Bumbershoot Music Festival and the legendary radio station, KEXP. Their stories as independent artists paired with the struggles of real-world experiences inspired the band to write their 2026 album, 'Strays Forever'. Alongside Stathakopolous during the creation of this album, Scarves consisted of Nessa Grasing (vocals/guitar), Jesse Cohen (bass), Jacob Whinihan (drums), and LA-native Elijah Sokolow (guitar and production). 'Strays Forever' is about seeking optimism and hope against the intense fear and anxiety induced by our modern era. Niko explains, “I tried to make the music feel grand yet cozy, glitchy but homey."

Rayna's fifth full-length under the Black Meteoric Star again serves as a vessel for her lifelong love of dance music alongside spiritual themes, drag and her formative experiences in S/M culture. Since focusing it in Berlin in 2006, the project from the former member of LCD Soundsystem has always carried an avenger quality and here that energy is aimed directly at the current political moment. Wet celebrates the long shared history between electronic music and queer leather/SM culture, imagining a future where the two are fully reconnected. The sounds are sleek, stripped back electro worlds with sci-fi overtones and retro machines used to conjure everything from proto-rawness to ice cold minimalism.

Hunter Davies

Get Back : The Boys Who Became The Beatles

They did not seem arrogant or entitled. I didn’t see them bossing around their staff or being horrid to studio assistants. But they did worry if this was all there was.

All this fame and fortune, was it really all that great? The world saw them as an overnight success, who had come from nowhere. But they knew from whence they had come. Perhaps that’s what kept them grounded.’ Hunter Davies, the only authorised biographer of The Beatles, revisits his treasured 39 notebooks filled with remarkable interviews to explore the lives of John, Paul, George and Ringo as they were growing up and coming of age.

Drawing on a wealth of never-before-revealed, intimate material, and his own experience as a boy of similar age from a working-class Northern background, Hunter now tells the story of where they came from, what it was like, how it shaped their hopes and aspirations. Hunter spent three years with The Beatles, visiting all their homes, and each of them visiting his. He also spent time with their parents, school friends, teachers, girlfriends, members of the Quarry Men and many others from their inner circle.

Their conversations often harked back to the War, with memories of air-raid shelters and rationing, to the NHS coming in, the eleven plus and grammar schools, and council house life in the 1950s. We all know what they became famous for, but here Hunter takes us into the much more private world of their formative years, for this colourful, richly detailed, personal portrait of the young boys who were destined to come together and revolutionise music and pop culture.

Perro Bueno Edits

Perro Bueno Edits Vol 8

The eighth helping of these Perro Bueno Edits is as delicious as Kinder Buenos (we have kids, don't judge us). Once again it is an anonymous affair from the in-house team, whoever that may be, and this one opens with 'SDBO', which is a new flip of, we're told, a "rare African cover version of a much-loved disco classic". It has a perfect mix of disco glam and Afro earthiness with soaring melodies and funk drums that can't fail to get you locked in. 'LEHA' on the B-side is another Afro-funk gem that is rebuilt with layers of chunky percussion and drums, interplay between male and female vocals and fat bass that anchors the whole thing perfectly.

Solex

Low Kick And Hard Bop - 25th Anniversary Edition

Matador Revisionist History celebrates the 25th anniversary of Solex’s ‘Low Kick and Hard Bop.’ The album returns to us newly expanded with long-lost cut 'Mr. Crockpot'.

First released in 2001, this was the third album by Amsterdam-based songwriter and one-time record shop owner, Elisabeth Esselink. Here, her sampler-driven found-sound retro-futurist style came into full stride with hooks sourced from dusty vinyl, TV, radio, and street noise.

A generation later, ‘Low Kick’ remains an ebullient work of retro-futurist pop – layered breaks splitting turf with bluesy riffs, girl group grooves, and surrealist swagger. Way back then, The Wire called it “A dizzying array of elements and exuberance,” and we dare you to argue otherwise.

“Solex’s Elisabeth Esselink takes you into her Dada-esqe, cut, paste, and fold sonic dance party,” writes Matador founder Chris Lombardi. “She reconstructs a million shards of sounds and styles into a kaleidoscopic musical masterpiece.”

Jaime Rosso

Keep Stepping EP

'Keep Stepping!' is the follow up to 2025’s 'Away' EP which saw Jaime establish himself as a dynamic new producer with an exciting future.

Whereas his debut EP, 'Away' has deep connections to Jaime’s home in rural Kent, 'Keep Stepping!' is an EP with the city in mind. Inspired by Jaime's time living in South London, the EP takes inspiration from London’s soundsystem sonics with Rosso mixing in bright melodies and dreamlike atmospherics to create a sound of his own. Much like the hum of the capital, there is an underlying groove that flows through it, whilst Jaime’s playful production keeps the music sounding buoyant and fresh. Influenced by the exuberant atmosphere of summer in the city, 'Keep Stepping!' embraces positivity and the importance of getting out of your own head and engaging with the community around you.

Jack Wyllie

Eternal Spring

Jack Wyllie, saxophonist, flautist, and composer, is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Mercury Prize-nominated widescreen minimalists Portico Quartet and as one-third of the revelatory ambient improvising trio Szun Waves. Yet his distinctive voice on flute, soprano saxophone, and tenor saxophone marks him out as a key figure in contemporary music. A keen collaborator whose projects have drawn on ambient, fourth-world, electronica, and modern classical influences, 'Eternal Spring' is the first recording released under his own name.

Featuring collaborators as diverse as former Portico Quartet bandmates drummer Duncan Bellamy and bassist Milo Fitzpatrick, iconoclastic Polish artist Hania Rani, cellist Dobrawa Czocher, and Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, 'Eternal Spring' draws inspiration both from Wyllie’s love of verdant nature and from the idea of a constant, flickering sense of hope. Its compositions balance elevating melodies with cyclical rhythms while unashamedly reaching for something hopeful and beautiful.

Shimmering, rippling, budding, and blossoming—yet still appealingly familiar—'Eternal Spring' is one of those rare records that reveals the magic all around us by gently removing us from our everyday circumstances.

Whether welcoming a new day or painting night skies, 'Eternal Spring' celebrates life and its cyclical nature. Indeed, the music not only demanded the title for itself but also compelled Wyllie to release it under his given name.

“I realised I’m ready to own it,” he says.

As likely to provoke references to ambient and jazz as it is to classical music and post-rock, the album is united by an essential bucolic sense of renewal and replenishment. It also embraces a wide range of touchstones, from John Adams to John Surman, from Ryuichi Sakamoto to James Holden. Wyllie additionally acknowledges Keith Jarrett’s Arbour Zena, recorded with Jan Garbarek and Charlie Haden, as well as a kinship with South Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s serene film Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.

Having first mapped out the compositions on piano and synthesizers, Wyllie developed their nascent rhythms alongside Portico Quartet drummer Duncan Bellamy, finding confidence in the project’s restorative intentions. Recording sessions subsequently expanded to Saint Thomas Church in Clapton, Max Richter’s Studio Richter Mahr, and finally London’s Fish Factory.

“It was like I’d found a natural space between all my projects,” he says, “something I could hone in on.”

Kokoroko

Tempos Dificeis Sempre Passam EP

Kokoroko today announce Tempos Difíceis Sempre Passam, a new remix EP reimagining tracks from their acclaimed album Tuff Times Never Last through the lens of some of Brazil's most exciting contemporary artists.

Translating the album's title into Portuguese, Tempos Difíceis Sempre Passam reflects both the enduring message at the heart of the original record and the creative dialogue between Kokoroko's expansive musical world and Brazil's rich, genre-defying music scene. The four-track collection brings together a handpicked group of artists whose individual approaches blur the boundaries between a variety of genres and contemporary Brazilian sounds.

To be released digitally and on limited vinyl, the EP also sees the return of acclaimed artist Luci Pina, whose artwork for Tuff Times Never Last is reimagined for this new chapter, creating a visual thread between the original album and its Brazilian counterpart.

Leading the announcement is Never Lost (Luedji Luna Remix), available now on all digital platforms. The celebrated Brazilian singer-songwriter brings her unmistakable warmth and emotive vocal sensibility to the track, offering a beautifully understated reinterpretation that deepens the song's themes of hope, resilience and togetherness.

Completing the EP are three further remixes from across Brazil's vibrant musical landscape. Onome of Kokoroko joins forces with acclaimed guitarist Nyron Higor for a richly textured rework of Da Du Dah, while producer Aleh Ferreira delivers a rhythm-driven reinterpretation of the same track. Closing the collection, Bruno Berle transforms Closer To Me with his signature blend of intimate songwriting, Brazilian groove and experimental pop sensibilities.

Together, the remixes offer fresh perspectives on Tuff Times Never Last, extending the album's spirit of optimism while celebrating the creative connections between London and Brazil.

Dean McPhee

Northern Earth

Northern Earth is Dean McPhee's sixth full-length album and the second release on his own label, Bass Ritual. Expanding on the low-end focus of 2024's Astral Gold and last year's The Bradford Boar on the Folklore Tapes label, Northern Earth integrates overdriven guitar, a wooden snare drum pedal and a powerful 18-inch subwoofer, pushing his sound further beyond the sparse fingerpicked solo guitar of his earlier releases. Drawing on influences from psychedelic rock, British folk, dub and underground electronic music, the album's three expansive compositions - including the side-long title track - were honed through live performance and recorded live with no overdubs at McPhee's home in Bradford. His solo setup - stacked valve amps, subwoofer, guitar, percussion pedals and expansive pedalboard - now functions as a single self-contained instrument, layering hypnotic basslines, ritualistic loops and fluid melodies with physical weight and a deep sense of space.

Nobody Broke Your Heart : An Intimate Biography Of Elliott Smith

Nobody Broke Your Heart is the revealing biography of one of the most enigmatic and revered singer-songwriters of the late 20th-century. Featuring original interviews with many of his friends and collaborators and, for the first time, with the participation of his family - many of whom speak on the record for the first time - offering rare and intimate insights into his troubled life and enduring legacy. From his childhood in Texas, through to his settling in the counter-cultural hotbed of Portland, Oregon, to the heights of critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination, this biography captures the beauty and pain that permeated both his life and music.

While honouring the profound emotional resonance of songs like "Between the Bars," "Waltz #2 (XO)," and "Miss Misery," the book also confronts the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding his untimely death. More than a chronicle of tragedy, Nobody Broke Your Heart is a celebration of an artist whose delicate melodies and haunting lyrics have touched millions of fans around the world. This is the essential portrait of a tortured genius whose music continues to inspire-and whose legacy, at last, is fully illuminated.

The Philosophy Of Vinyl

Vinyl is back! For some, it never really went away. But whether you are a life-long aficionado, a penitent former CD head or recent convert to the format, The Philosophy of Vinyl is a book aimed at enhancing your appreciation of the discs in your collection. This book celebrates all the rituals of records: the sleeves, the sides played, all the rites of needles, fluff and cleaning cloths, and the smells of records and their covers.

Its pages include enough nuggets of technical information to satisfy hi-fi enthusiasts and plenty of quirky trivia on classic records, labels, recording studios, pressing plants and cover artwork to delight the novice record collector, and anyone filled with the nostalgia of a youth spent carefully turning the disc to play the other side. It is a book that sends its readers back to their records with renewed love and affection, and hopefully inspires them to seek out new additions and find fresh ways to revel in their 45s, EPs, 12-inches and LPs as long as their turntables keep spinning, and the crackle of needle on vinyl ignites their senses.

2K88 | Lauren Duffus | Rainy Miller | Bianca Scout

Everything Always Changes, For We’re Truly Here

There's a dance scene in Tadeusz Konwicki's Kafkaesque 1965 drama film 'Salto' that lodged itself in Przemysław Jankowiak's head while he was conceiving'Everything Always Changes, For We're Truly Here'. The film plays like a dream and the dance works almost like the payoff, a haunting, poignant moment that subtly references the title itself, which loosely translates as 'leap'. "I like listening through images and seeing through sound," explains Jankowiak, who's better known as 2K88. His music has always been cinematic, but this album in particular, made alongside acclaimed British artists Lauren Duffus, Rainy Miller and Bianca Scout, plays like slow cinema, meditating on themes that smolder evocatively without ever fully igniting. It's best described as hypnagogic R&B, a reverie of affecting vignettes pieced together from unexpectedly vivid elements: sensual vocal hooks, free-flowing raps, submerged rhythms and rough, craggy atmospheres. The four contributors pass sounds and memories back-and-forth, imagining melancholy sci-fi hymns, inverted pop songs and neo-trip-hop outlines that melt away at the edges, falling into a captivating rhythm of their own.

The project was originally commissioned by Unsound in an effort to match up Polish and British artists. Jankowiak had already released 'SHAME', an album that reflected on the impact of Polish rap in the late 1990s and early 2000s, juxtaposing these elements with the aesthetics of UK club music, so presented himself as the obvious figurehead. Miller, Duffus and Scout were at the top of his wish list of collaborators and before long, the quartet were on their way to his home city of Gdynia for a residency, where they began to figure out the harmony between their respective approaches. It was planned as a live performance at first, with 2K88 overseeing and corralling the ideas from each of his allies. Miller, who is widely acclaimed for his unique fusion of rap, noise and ambient music on albums such as last year's 'Joseph, What Have You Done?', would add poetic, inclement contemplations; Duffus, whose weightless, genre-blending productions have seen her release on AD93 and tour with indie rap heavyweight MIKE, provided cloudy but self-assured vocal hooks; while Scout, a producer and performer who shivered between gothic pop and medieval ambiance on 2023's 'The Heart of the Anchoress' offered haunted textures and desolate chorals.

"I think in the back of all our minds was a possible release if the collaboration worked out well," laughs Unsound's Mat Schulz. "And of course it did." After the live performance in Kraków, the four artists turned the dream into a reality, projecting the same ideas onto 10 fully developed tracks. And on the opener, 'Everything Always Changes', the concept solidifies, with coarse noise rubbing against Scout and Duffus's airy vocal tones and booming analog bass provoking tension before Miller's familiar voice cuts through the clouds. "There's a war where the sea meets the sky," he sibilates, "where the lines blur into fantastical dissonance." His imagery matches Jankowiak's faded soundscape, bringing to mind a half-remembered, long-promised history lost to time and politics. "It's trapped in this romantic haze," says Miller. "It conjures images of fictional seaside towns, ghosts of past grandeur living through imaginary romances in the present." And his voice returns on 'Creeping Thistle', AutoTuned to curve gracefully around sparsely populated, burned out terrain: ominous synths, wailing police sirens and reverb that seems to swallow everything around it.

On 'The Quiet's Song' familiar R&B hits and stabs are isolated and surrounded by ominous negative space that Scout impedes on with her reserved incantation. Loose, casual piano themes wisp through the frame like smoky exhalations and those sirens still groan away somewhere in the distance. The various threads are knotted into a more legible form on 'Poetic Fallacy', when Jankowiak's decelerated beats overlap with heartbreaking half-speed melodies and Duffus's elegant hooks. Scout takes the mic for a moment and a broken de-tuned guitar picks out the remnants of a riff. But it's the aptly-titled 'Salto' that gives the album its nucleus, fixating on Jankowiak's all-important visual reference and using its imagery to power a genuine pop miniature, a gauzy, abstract modern R&B anthem that's as impressionistic and suggestive as Konwicki's's film.

Elephant

'Elephant' is an album that doesn’t ask for space, it takes it.

Built on weight, grit, and undeniable presence, 'Elephant' moves like its namesake: loud, heavy, and impossible to ignore. There’s a swagger to it, a confidence that leans into chaos, desire, and the pull of living all the way, even when it leaves a mark.

But like an elephant, it’s not all brute force. Beneath the heavy stomp is something more human. There are moments of vulnerability, cracks where emotion slips through, where longing, doubt, and reflection take over. The album balances power with sensitivity, and strength with softness. A notion that even the biggest presence can feel deeply.

Like the massive creature pushing through brush and unbroken paths, 'Elephant' is about confronting what’s right in front of you; the noise, the weight, the truth, and choosing to move through it anyway.

The second instalment of Chapter Music’s acclaimed Australian post-punk compilation series 'Can’t Stop It!' is released on vinyl for the first time as a deluxe double album.

Bonus tracks include the astounding 'How' by Brisbane's This Five Minutes, which pre-dates The Stone Roses' 'Fool's Gold' by at least five years, and Tasmania's own performance punk Chainmale with his outlandish Freakout.

Case/Lang/Veirs

Case/Lang/Veirs - 10th Anniversary Edition

The deluxe 10th anniversary edition of 'Case/Lang/Veirs' features the new track 'Accidental Tattoo' and twelve never-before-released live recordings alongside the original studio album from supergroup of singer-songwriters Neko Case, kd lang and Laura Veirs.

Released in 2016, 'Case/Lang/Veirs' is a true collaboration between three phenomenal, self-driven artists: "the strongest voices in their field - lang the full-voiced seductress, Case the hurricane, and Veirs the wry storyteller" (Pitchfork). The women wrote all 14 songs and shared lead vocals equally, sometimes even within the same track. Full of stunning harmonies and spellbinding rhythms, 'Case/Lang/Veirs' travels through aches and eras, torch songs and tributes to the undersung.

"There's a generosity of spirit to case/ lang/ veirs," NPR praised upon the album's release, "a worthy extension of three tremendous catalogs, in which three great singer-songwriters sound enhanced and invigorated by the challenge of living up to each other's legacies." They worked over two and a half years in Portland, Oregon, where lang and Veirs both live, sometimes in lang's loft with a view of Mount St. Helens, others in Veirs' dining room or backyard studio. The album was written from the ground up without any real plan beyond a desire to make music together and a faith that it would reveal itself. They produced the album with Tucker Martine, at his Portland studio in November 2015.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80

Na Dem / Problems (45 RPM)

This special 45 RPM release marks the start of an electrifying new chapter for Seun Kuti & Egypt 80. Teaming up with Femi Koleoso of Ezra Collective, Seun bridges generations and continents while preserving the legendary fire of Egypt 80. Koleoso’s production brings a fresh, contemporary pulse to two explosive new tracks that launch Seun’s latest sonic and political journey.

Side A: Debuted live and propelled into viral status after a blistering Coachella performance, 'Na Dem' ('It’s Them') finally receives its definitive studio version - a fierce indictment of the hypocrisy and greed of the global ruling class. Featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, the track fuses Egypt 80’s incendiary horns with Morello’s weaponized guitar work, creating a powerful fusion of Afrobeat and radical rock rebellion —a track designed not just to move feet, but to spark global reflection and resistance.

Side B: On the flip side, Seun Kuti dives into a pan- African sonic dialogue with 'Problems', creating a rhythmic and spiritual bridge between Lagos and Kingston. Featuring Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist Kabaka Pyramid, the track pairs conscious lyrical flow with Seun’s gritty vocals over rolling percussion, a propulsive bassline, and hypnotic rhythm produced by Femi Koleoso. “Problems” addresses the systemic challenges facing oppressed communities worldwide in a heavy, grooving anthem of resilience.

A collector's essential, this 7" vinyl is more than just a musical release - it is a global protest manifesto pressed into wax.

Buena Vista Social Club

Buena Vista Social Club - 30th Anniversary Edition

Celebrating 30 years since ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ was released, this classic will be made available on limited edition pearl vinyl and features the remastered audio and bonus tracks released as part of the album’s 25th Anniversary in 2021.

Masterminded by the trio of Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González, American producer and guitarist Ry Cooder, and British producer and label owner Nick Gold, 'Buena Vista Social Club’ is both the name given to this extraordinary group of musicians and the album they recorded in just seven days in 1996 in Havana’s 1950s vintage EGREM studios. It was clear from the atmosphere of the recording sessions that something very special was taking place. However, no one could have predicted that Buena Vista Social Club would become a worldwide phenomenon – awarded a Grammy in 1997 and, at over 8 million copies, outselling any other record in the same genre.

The acclaim of the original album elevated the artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo) to superstar status, inspired an award-winning film by Wim Wenders, a Tony Award-Winning Broadway Musical and contributed to popularising Cuba’s rich musical heritage. Produced by Ry Cooder and Executive Produced by Nick Gold for World Circuit, the timeless quality of the music and the sheer verve of the veteran performers have ensured that this album will go down as one of the landmark recordings of the 20th century.

The Go

Free Electricity - 2026 Reissue

The Go’s 'Free Electricity', the group’s storied, long-lost album, finally gets a proper release! The Go appeared in Detroit in 1996, led by Bobby Harlow and featuring Dave Buick on bass and Jack White on guitar. Following the release of their 1999 debut, 'Whatcha Doin’, and a few lineup changes, the band hit the studio with Dion Fischer on lead guitar, John Olson (of Wolf Eyes) on saxophone, and Cary Loren (of Destroy All Monsters) to record their sophomore effort. The session found the band and their producer, Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry), exploring the outer edges of rock and roll, with blaring lead guitars, copious amounts of reverb, and a heavy jazz influence thanks to a heavy diet of ‘60s free jazz. The results erupt from the speakers with a cavernous sound, like some haunted frequency beamed across the time barrier from the Grande Ballroom circa 1968, often sounding more like records by Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra than the records being made by The Go’s peers in the ‘00s rock and roll scene.

'Free Electricity' was written, composed, and arranged by Bobby Harlow (except track one, which was written by Harlow and Dion Fischer; and track five, written by Harlow and Cary Loren). 'Free Electricity' was mixed and produced by Matthew Smith, engineered by Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders, and mastered by Jim Kissling at Jim Kissling Mastering in Detroit, Michigan. Guest appearances by folks from Destroy All Monsters and Wolf Eyes only reinforced the album's musical direction. Weird or not, this was an inspired recording made by an inspired group of musicians. There was a feeling of excitement and adventure happening at these sessions, it shines through mightily on this album.

Mort Garson

Mother Earth's Plantasia - 50th Anniversary Edition

Before Brian Eno did it, Mort Garson was making discreet music. Julliard-educated and active as a session player in the post-war era, Garson wrote lounge hits, scored the 1969 moon-landing and plush arrangements for Doris Day, and garlanded weeping countrypolitan strings around Glen Campbell’s By the Time I Get to Phoenix.

In the mid-1970s, a force of nature swept across the continental United States, cutting across all strata of race and class, rooting in our minds, our homes, our culture. It wasn’t The Exorcist, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, or even bellbottoms, but instead a book called The Secret Life of Plants. The work of occultist/ former OSS agent Peter Tompkins and former CIA agent/dowsing enthusiast Christopher Bird, the book shot up the bestseller charts and spread like kudzu across the landscape, becoming a phenomenon.

Seemingly overnight, the indoor plant business was in full bloom and photosynthetic eukaryotes of every genus were hanging off walls, lording over bookshelves, and basking on sunny window ledges. The science behind Secret Life was specious: plants can hear our prayers, they’re lie detectors, they’re telepathic, able to predict natural disasters and receive signals from distant galaxies. But that didn’t stop millions from buying and nurturing their new plants.

Perhaps the craziest claim of the book was that plants also dug music. And whether you purchased a snake plant, asparagus fern, peace lily, or what have you from Mother Earth on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles (or bought a Simmons mattress from Sears), you also took home Plantasia, an album recorded especially for them. Subtitled “warm earth music for plants…and the people that love them,” it was full of bucolic, charming, stoner-friendly, decidedly unscientific tunes enacted on the new-fangled device called the Moog.

The album gained an enormous cult following decades after its release. Sacred Bones’ 2019 reissue helped introduce Plantasia to a wider global audience, sparking a remarkable second life for Garson’s unlikely masterpiece.
What was once a strange artifact of 1970s plant-mania has become a beloved evergreen, rediscovered and re-embraced by a new generation of listeners and flourishing far beyond its original moment, evolving from obscure novelty into a beloved cult classic and streaming-era touchstone.

Now, 50 years after its original release, Mother Earth’s Plantasia marks a major anniversary moment. Half a century on, it continues to resonate - an enduring reminder of Mort Garson’s ability to make the synthetic feel strangely alive and the whimsical feel oddly profound.

Kensuke Ushio

CHAINSAW MAN THE MOVIE: REZE ARC Original Soundtrack - Summer's End

That one summer that felt like everything… until it wasn’t. The rain-soaked phone booth, the pool, the fireworks, the moments where it almost felt real. kensuke ushio’s summer’s end score lives right in that space between tenderness and collapse, where quiet love turns into chaos in an instant.

This soundtrack captures every emotional shift of the Reze Arc. From intimate cues like 'in the pool' and 'in the sea' to the overwhelming intensity of 'edge of chainsaw (typhoon ver.)', this is the full experience of the film, pressed onto vinyl.

Spooky Eyes

Spooky Eyes

Spooky Eyes are a new psychedelic rock power trio rumbling out of Tasmania/lutruwita, Australia and this self-titled debut record is their mission statement. Self-written and recorded, with Eddy Current’s Mikey Young on mastering duties, 'Spooky Eyes' commits the band’s monolithic live energy and sound to wax. This is six tracks and thirty minutes of raw and timeless rock’n’roll goodness – channeling howling acid rock riffs, heady psychedelia and proto-metal grit with a loose, jam-driven energy, pulled straight from the late 60s/70s underground.

Horse Feathers

Words Are Dead - 20th Anniversary Edition

In 2026, Horse Feathers’ debut album, 'Words Are Dead', celebrates its 20th anniversary with a deluxe reissue that is completely remastered and pressed on an exclusive vinyl color. It also includes a replica of their original six-song demo CD in the package, along with a deluxe foil-stamped LP jacket.

In the years following 'Words Are Dead', Horse Feathers quietly built a body of work defined by patience and evolution rather than reinvention. Records like 'House With No Home', 'Thistled Spring', and 'Cynic’s New Year' expanded their sonic palette without abandoning the restraint that first set them apart.

By the time of 'Appreciation', the band had begun to open its sound outward, introducing richer arrangements and a subtle warmth that suggested growth without rupture. Through it all, Ringle remained a steady center, writing songs that favored emotional precision over spectacle. The reissue of 'Words Are Dead' does not attempt to rewrite that history. Instead, it brings the origin point back into focus, offering a rare chance to hear where it all began while recognizing how far the project has traveled since. Revisiting the album now, with two decades of distance, reveals not just a beginning but a foundation. The same careful interplay, the same attention to space and tone, still anchors the band’s work today. In that sense, the reissue feels less like a retrospective and more like a continuation. A reminder that some records do not age so much as they wait for the right moment to be heard again.

Dogwood Tales

Every Star In Rockingham County

Though heavy and personal in its lyrical content, the album was born out of a spirit of naivety and experimentation that breathes lightness and excitement into the music. Pedal steel chords and delicate harmonization between Ryan and Grim — who’ve at this point been singing together half their lives — accompany jamming power pop drum lines by Golibart, tasteful guitar licks, and wistful video game soundbites.

Whether it’s song titles like 'Princess Peach' and the football games and Coca-Colas of 'McMemories' Dogwood Tales speaks in a vocabulary previously unexplored in earlier works, unafraid of showing as much reverence for iconic fast food and video game characters as they do their grandmothers and local basketball legends.

Or the achingly specific lyrics in 'Angel Dreams', “We drove to Southern Kitchen, you wouldn’t even play my favorite song. You cried in your fried chicken, the waitress thought I said something wrong,” it’s easy to feel like you’re sitting on a couch in the band’s attic; sharing stories, ambient Gamecube on in the background. The humming electric guitars over beds of pedal steel and earnest lyricism find ESiRC in dialogue with indie rock’s current Lo-Fi country romanticism, lyrically pays homage to revered American songwriters in the footsteps of Townes Van Zandt, but ultimately takes listeners on a ride through uncharted territory.

It’s a ride through Rockingham County, through the moody valley, the tight bond of four friends coming of age in a rural Virginia town, and a digital age where loneliness is far too prevalent. Thankfully, we’ve got the stars to keep us company.

Black Duck With Elena Setién

Black Duck With Elena Setién

The Chicago trio of Black Duck is a natural fit for collaboration with acclaimed Basque musician Elena Setién. Black Duck’s bassist/guitarist Douglas McCombs, guitarist Bill MacKay and drummer Charles Rumback have been lauded for their adaptability as live performers and collaborators for decades, performing in countless ensembles from Tortoise to Brokeback to collaborations with Ryley Walker, Bill Callahan, James Singleton and many more. Setién honed her improvisational skills in duo Little Red Suitcase before going on to collaborate with the likes of Steve Gunn, Mary Lattimore, and Glenn Kotche (Wilco) to name a few. Black Duck and Elena Setién’s combined preternatural ability to converse at the boundaries of improvisation and composition makes for fertile ground in which every subtle gesture carries weight.

On their debut, self-titled collaborative release, Black Duck and Elena Setién alchemize the ease of their live chemistry and their wealth of experience into a refined menagerie. The quartet first played together in early 2025 having only just met, trading off sitting in on each other’s sets on a run of shows throughout Spain. Recorded just a few months later in Chicago at Palisade with Nick Broste after only a few hours of rehearsal, the record embraces the spontaneity of those performances. The freewheeling compositions take on added layers of depth with skillfully layered overdubs. The album perfectly balances the openness and core electric energy shared between each musician in the room and sumptuous, detailed arrangements.

Together, Black Duck and Elena Setién sounds like a singular unit and four powerhouses all at once. Their collective compositional acumen makes for an exquisite diversity of sounds and movements that all cohere into a singular album only they could make. A gem of collective work, the record is the sound of a quartet of masters of their craft moving in tandem.

Beach Bunny

The Early Days: Animalism, Pool Party, Crybaby

Chicago band Beach Bunny revisits their first three original releases, Animalism, Pool Party, and Crybaby. Featuring fan-favorite tracks “February,” “July,” and “6 Weeks,” this revamped edition reintroduces the band’s roots over a decade later.

Begun a decade ago as a Trifilio solo project, Beach Bunny have amassed a loyal fanbase thanks to things such as constant touring and collaborations with artists like Tegan and Sara and Marina. And today, Beach Bunny continues to nurture their community with appearances at Coachella and Lollapalooza and by curating their own Pool Party festivals in their hometown of Chicago.

So far, this approach has worked like a charm. The band - the name refers interchangeably to both Trifilio and the full band that also features bassist/lead guitarist Anthony Vaccaro and drummer Jon Alvarado - has landed viral hits such as the RIAA-certified Platinum "Prom Queen" and "Cloud 9” and the RIAA-certified Gold "Sports," and earned over a billion streams on Spotify alone plus countless appearances on critics' best of the year lists. 2022’s Emotional Creature, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart, while “Vertigo," the first single released from Tunnel Vision, became their highest charting song at AAA radio to date upon its 2024 release.

Four Tet

New Energy - 2026 Repress

Finally one of the most requested, eagerly anticipated and generally exciting LPs of the year has finally landed. That's right, ambient maverick, electronic legend, jungle revivalist and abstract jazzer Four Tet is back with his first full length (longer than two conceptual suites) LP of brand new material in four years. Leaving the archival "0181" to one side, Kieran's last two LP outings were the extended and mind expanding ethno-lectronica of "Morning / Evening" and the dislocated, narcotic and blunted jungle of "Beautiful Rewind". Much to the delight of the KH traditionalists out there (cough...Barry) there's nary a spinback in sight on the blissful "New Energy", the producer opting instead to stroll calmly through the ambient pads, twinkling sequences and sublime textures which kept us company from "Everything Ecstatic" through to "There Is Love In You". Float away on the chilled waters of "Alap", nod along to the harp-led downbeat of "Two Thousand And Seventeen" and smile along to the soft focus stylings and pastoral glitch of "LA Trance". The B-side brings the "Ringer" style hypno-rhythm and "Love In You" beauty of "Lush", before darting off into the skitterish BOC beat space of the jazz flecked "Scientists". Boasting subtle breakbeats, cinematic swells and pulsating electronics, not to mention a bewitching kalimba refrain, "You Are Loved" sees out the first disc in sublime fashion.
Onto the second platter and "SW9 9SL" (a nod to Four Tet's Brixton Academy all nighters) is a streamlined club banger decorated by shuffling percussion, rumbling bass and a massive, hands aloft breakdown. "10 Midi" offers a moment of calm after that dancefloor burner and leads nicely into the harpy downbeat of "Memories". Referencing the mantra like vocals of "Morning/ Evening" and "There Is Love...", "Daughter" is a gossamer blend of reversed vocals, cascading melodies and soothing bass - the perfect companion to the astral, ethno-techno of "Planet". Pulsating space sounds, scattered vocals and trilling kora dip in and out of the spectral arps, riding a sturdy 4/4 thump into the furthest reaches of our galaxy. All that remains is to buy yourself a copy, sit comfortably by the speakers and rest easy in the knowledge Four Tet's done it again.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Combing the brilliant off-kilter jazztronic excursions of early years with the more downbeat, dancefloor-orientated kinetic outings of late (not that late) has worked a treat. Properly beautiful.

Paul Heaton

Jenius

Ask Paul Heaton how many songs he’s written and he’ll tell you he’s not really sure. Perhaps that’s unsurprising: this summer it’s 40 years since The Housemartins released their debut album, 'Hull: 0 London: 4'. Subsequently, he’s released, in various configurations – with The Housemartins and The Beautiful South, solo and with Jacqui Abbot, not to mention as Biscuit Boy –another 21 studio albums, plenty going gold, some multi-platinum, as they’ve risen to the charts’ highest reaches. For each, moreover, he’ll have written many many more songs than he’ll ever include.

Now, less than two years since 'The Mighty Several', this prolific, poetic observer of human nature is back with another fifteen gems. “I've had stuff coming in and out of my brain since I was 17 or 18,” he laughs, “but I’m surprised the tunes keep popping into my head. You've got to get it out of your system, though. Writer’s block just sounds made-up. You don't get plumber's block. If your toilet's full of shit, you don't think, ‘Do you know what? I can't get my head around this.’ You either call a plumber or do it yourself. That's how I see it with songs. Don't leave it in there. Just get it out. Even if it's shit.”

To observers of the Manchester-dwelling songwriter, such self-effacement will be familiar. Few artists are as modest, a spirit Heaton carries over into his lifestyle, whether taking the tram to the studio when’s it raining or touring England by bike in 2010 (and the whole UK two years later.) “I've just tried to be myself,” he says, humble once more, “because I'm not a rotten person. I don't think most people are.” He’s also uncommonly willing to share his microphone, letting others make his songs their own. This time, Rianne Downey picks up where she left off on 'The Mighty Several' – having first covered for an ailing Jacqui Abbott on tour in 2020 after Heaton discovered her on social media – while Ireland’s Declan O’Rourke brings out her Dolly Parton side on rambunctious country bacchanal, ‘The Whisky Did’.

'Jenius', Heaton’s new album’s title, is a symptom of this unassuming style. “If anybody ever calls me a genius,” he explains, “I always say, ‘What?! With a J?!’ The spelling would obviously be wrong.” Fortunately, there’s nothing bashful about these songs, something reflected in the LP’s cover, the first to feature a photo of Heaton since the Housemartin’s debut album. Indeed, 'Jenius' betrays the truth of his talents, and its songs – of love and loneliness, pubs and booze, community and counsel, a nod to football, the state of the nation, and the overall wisdom of kindness – are distinguished by his notably tender voice, his enchanting melodies and a meticulous, effortless craft. “If I can get a variety of people of all sorts of backgrounds to say, ‘Oh, that could be about me or you,’” he says, “then I've been successful”.

Such diversity isn’t restricted to his lyrics. Kicking off with ‘Can’t Get Next To You’’s rowdy three-chord rush and rounding things up with ‘A Son A Father’’s extravagant but barbed glam rock, 'Jenius' dips its toes assuredly into rock ‘n’ roll, country, soul and ska, blues, Yacht Rock, even Latin terrain. Again, his duets are as charming and loaded as Nancy & Lee’s, yet, on the likes of the fragile ‘Jet Back Sky’ and bittersweet ‘Send In The Clowns’, he explores what he considers more “atmospheric” territory than ever before.

All of this is shot through with his quintessential blend of empathy, wit and contempt. His protagonists pine for the elusive (‘Can’t Get Next To You’) and revel in flaws (‘My Favourite Kind Of Idiot’). They find the best in their circumstances (‘She Ain’t Pretty’) or find themselves written out of history (‘Do Not Ask Me’). They commit to romance (‘I Want The Job’), watch it “screwed up or binned” (‘Sad Songs And Lawsuits’), or concede that it’s not for them (‘Good For The Bees’). They rail at racists (‘One Eye Open’) and berate buffoons (‘Send In The Clowns’), get pissed (‘Don’t Lean On Me’), and if at times they extol the benefits of maintaining good humour (‘Go Upstream’), at others they spotlight uncomfortable truths, like the insanity of humanity’s impatience (‘Before Before’). Indeed, there aren’t many chart-topping songwriters who can pack a punch with Heaton’s prowess, as when he crowns ‘A Son A Father’’s belting eulogy with “... Husband and a cunt.”

'Jenius' would be a remarkable album at any time, even more for a man who turned 64 this spring. But it’s still more remarkable because it sounds like it was a joy to make but was recorded as his ten-year marriage ended. There is, however, no point seeking clues to this development in its songs because they were begun in the months following 'The Mighty Several' and penned, like so many before them, during cycling breaks in Holland. They were finished there, too, in a village north of Amsterdam, with guitarist Jonny Lexus. Having worked with Heaton since 2010’s 'Acid Country', this time he earned eight co-writing credits as well as helping arrange other tracks. “It's nice writing songs by yourself,” Heaton says. “…but it's really nice writing them with Jonny.”

Like 2022’s 'N.K. Pop', 'Jenius' was recorded in early 2026 at Manchester’s Blueprint Studios with a loyal coterie of associates. Bassist Chris Wise, who’s done a dozen years in Paul’s band and drummer Pete Marshall, a cool 17 years, returned again, though duties with Squeeze meant keyboardist Stephen Large was replaced by Toby Chapman. (“They all told him, ‘Just do the opposite of what you'd expect the song would need, and Paul would probably like that.’”) It was also produced, like 'The Mighty Several', by the legendary Ian Broudie. “Everybody in the band said he's the best who's worked on their instrument, and I could hear the difference,” Heaton says. “I think the production's probably even better this time because I've trusted him even more. I'm not technically musical, but he understands where I want to get to and he's given me shortcuts. I remember with The Housemartins I said something sounded ‘too milky’ and they're like, ‘What do you mean, ‘milky’?!’ It’s really nice to have somebody who translates that. He's like me, but with knowledge!”

This December marks forty years since Heaton’s first number one, The Housemartins’ cover of the Isley Jasper Isley’ song’ ‘Caravan Of Love’. That said, despite the many hits he’s had – from exuberant anthems like ‘Happy Hour’ to poignant portraits like ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’, from platinum singles like ‘Rotterdam (Or Anywhere)’ to number one albums like Manchester Calling – Jenius feels like a real achievement. “I’m particularly proud I've done this record at all,” he admits. “I didn't want the band to see what was going on in my private life, but going into a studio and seeing your friends and people who love you was a break from what was happening. Normally I write happy tunes when I'm skipping to the shops, but I've not been out and about much, whistling. I don't know why it sounds like fun, but, yeah, it is, and I'm glad it sounds like fun.”

Ultimately, Heaton estimates he’s now written some four or five hundred songs. In so doing, he’s established – though he’s too self-deprecating to state this himself – his own distinctive, if unconventional brand of quasi-English folk. Moreover, these singular classics not only keep coming but somehow keep getting better. “Even though I treat it like a job,” he concludes, “it never feels like a job. When I go into writing mode, I take it seriously, even if I'm having a drink. I feel proud of the person I am when I'm writing. I’m really in the zone, as they say. Then I ruin it in moments of silliness afterwards!”

Silly or serious, poignant or pointed, therein lies Paul Heaton’s 'Jenius'.

Tyondai Braxton

Splayed Werks

Even at first blush, 'Splayed Werks', Tyondai Braxton’s new album, his first full-length release since the recording of his 2022 symphonic work, 'Telekinesis', reveals itself as unlike what came before and marks the beginning of a new chapter with UK label Erased Tapes. First off, there’s a lot more music here, 70+ minutes of pure electronics and sound design. Plus, it’s divided in a way that’s out-of-step with the longer forms the 47 year-old composer/producer has previously imagined into being. Of the album’s 15 tracks, more than two-thirds are sub-five minutes.

It may be a perfect album for 2026, a time when the sonic landscape continues to fervently embrace increasingly radical hybrids, at once club soundsystem-ready, art-installation-leaning, and music-school-mediated. But also, importantly, intuitive and hand-crafted. It’s no stretch to say that Tyondai had a hand in building this world. His two decades-plus-long career has seen him co-found electronic prog-punk heroes Battles (which he’s described as “a laboratory that masqueraded as a band”); performing as a duo with Philip Glass; write numerous electro-acoustic and chamber commissions for celebrated American new-music ensembles such as Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alarm Will Sound, Third Coast Percussion, Brooklyn Rider, and Yarn/Wire; having his “part installation, part band” HIVE project appear at The Guggenheim Museum, Sydney Opera House, and a 3-night residency at Big Ears Festival; and deliver a series of technologically ambitious, at times orchestral works for lauded labels of electronic, experimental and future-music, Warp and Nonesuch Records.

As a portfolio, 'Splayed Werks' hews to the menu of a dance music meets minimalist electronic composition, a throughline that stretches from IDM absurdists like Aphex Twin and Autechre, to contemporary immersives like Mica Levi and Laurel Halo. (And, to a lesser degree, to Braxton’s comrades and occasional collaborators, Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden, Jeffrey Cantu-Ledesma and Ben Vida.) It’s a world in which the multitude of dirty rhythms strays far outside club-land’s big rooms—though one can imagine expert mixing hands and a world-class soundsystem transforming the dubwise lo-fi linearity of 'Oslo' into a psychedelic wonder, while the interplay between the bass-synth and the constantly deviating shuffle on 'UnFS' may qualify as a leftfield banger. And its composed beatless spaces have little to do with current ambient proclivities—the at-once aggressive and ecstatic, panning miniature, 'Realistic Water' sounds like power Laraaji.

Elanor Moss

The Knife, The Needle

Recording her debut full-length album 'The Knife, The Needle' was a healing process for Elanor Moss, who found herself adrift after touring on two EPs, 'Citrus' (2022) and 'Cosmic' (2023). That period saw Moss shifting her sound, experimenting with new genres and pitching her lyrics toward bombast. “Nothing felt right,” she recalls, “so I took the pressure off myself and tried to calibrate my relationship with songwriting and music.” The three years she spent writing 'The Knife, The Needle' ultimately found her returning to her roots in and love for, as she puts it, “the music that made me really feel something; the music I wanted to be writing.”

“These were folk and contemporary folk songwriters,” she continues. “I spent a lot of time playing the guitar. I borrowed a four-track tape machine and demoed songs on it. I also started therapy again, where I was beginning to unpack my understanding of where I come from, how my family history plays out in the things I do and how I love and receive love. Out of the slowness and quiet of those rhythms came these songs.”

'Sarah Waiting in the Car' sets the tone, with Moss’ delicate, contemplative guitar playing and the brushstrokes of Matthew Herd’s ensemble — Marcus Hamblett (horn), Jool Owen (horn), Andrew Stuart-Buttle (Violin), Reid Jenkins (Violin), Linus Fenton (double bass), and Herd (saxophone) — embellishing her lyrics with heart-rending gravitas as the narrative spilling out of Moss turns from a meeting at the bar to the aftermath of an abusive relationship, gentleness turning into violence.

'The Knife, The Needle' concerns itself with the way relationships are transformed, complicated, and troubled by love. In 'Fixer', Moss grapples with the fact that love is as capable of harming someone as it is healing them. Its chorus, “I’m afraid that if you show me the knife / I might use it on you babe” shifts to something else entirely: “Maybe what we thought of as a knife / Is just a needle we could use / To stitch the wound?”

It’s devastating work, at once patient and vulnerable, opulently rendered and keenly felt. 'The Knife, The Needle' emerged from a place of restraint, with Moss — staying at a cabin near her parent’s house in the Scottish highlands after initially recording a different version of the album in New York City — feeling the pangs of the album she hadn’t recorded — “quieter, weirder, more English.” Rerecording with a new ensemble and producer/engineer Pete Miles was a risk — not only was she putting aside a completed project, but the quieter, weirder, more English sound manifested by her second attempt at 'The Knife, The Needle' is utterly revelatory, both of Moss’ talent and the wounds she and her subjects carry. It was worth it: both objects named in the album’s title are capable of drawing blood, but illuminated by her voice and guitar, what bleeds out from the wounds she shares here is nothing short of poetry.

THRASHER

Recorded in Nashville at Historic RCA Studio A with longtime producers Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado, 'THRASHER' features many of Music City’s most renowned players, including longtime Gillian Welch collaborator David Rawlings on guitar, prolific and influential pedal steel player Bruce Bouton, and Charlie McCoy, the legendary harmonica player whose signature playing graces all four of Bob Dylan’s iconic Nashville records. PUP

Dream Is Over - 10th Anniversary Edition

PUP's classic LP 'The Dream Is Over' is turning 10 this year! To celebrate, SideOneDummy Records have collaborated with the band to create a special, lenticular (holographic) version of the iconic cover art, featuring a living, breathing flame.

The title of PUP's 2016 album 'The Dream Is Over' are the exact words a doctor spoke to singer/guitarist Stefan Babcock upon discovering one of his vocal cords had a small cyst and was beginning to hemorrhage. Given that the band, completed by drummer Zack Mykula, bassist Nestor Chumak and guitarist Steve Sladkowski, played over 450 shows in the last two years in support of its self-titled debut, it's perhaps not surprising that it happened. But while PUP had to end 2015 by canceling its last couple of shows, by announcing The Dream Is Over the way they did onstage at a sold out show in Brooklyn, the Toronto four piece proved that the exact opposite is true. 'The Dream Is Over' is visible, visceral proof that the dream is still alive. It's just that, after two exhausting years on the road, it turns out that the dream is just very different to what the four of them thought or imagined it would be like.

Grayhound Revisited: The Sun Also Rises - Incl. DJ Harvey Remix

Tokyo's Realrockdesign collective marks a full 30 years of cross-disciplinary creativity with the first of a planned trilogy. The A-side hands over a crown jewel from West Coast legend DJ Garth's Grayhound catalogue in 'Twenty Minutes Of Disco Glory', which gets remixed by DJ Harvey with a slow, deep, dark and come-to-me groove with a fizzy motif lingering like a trapped bee. The flip turns to German veteran Nectar, who is enjoying some deserved time back in the spotlight and shows why here: 'Fairy Trails' is a deliciously psychedelic descent into the underworld that perfectly befits its title. 'What Tha?' is paranoid and unsure with a writhing bassline, detuned synths bringing a freaky edge and a dubby, shuffling groove that is as inviting as the rest of the track is wonderfully weird.

CSS

Cansei De Ser Sexy - 20th Anniversary Edition

From São Paulo, Brazil comes CSS, the first South American band Sub Pop had foisted upon the global marketplace. 'Cansei de Ser Sexy', Portuguese for “Tired of Being Sexy,” is improbably, unbelievably and nearly eponymously their debut. It is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths ('Alala') and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing ('Art Bitch', 'Patins'). It is equal parts rock mantra and throwback into something new, transcending boundaries of genre and geography. It careers full speed into dance territory, into the unknown and untouched, to emerge all hot and bothered with wild electro-rock. Pretension? Absent. Friction? Probable. They are the un-pretension: unfinished, exposed, and throwing all they have right at you. It is quick, tightly-wound, unfastened and supreme. Not a sneer but a giggle. To paraphrase from the Portuguese: “Not only music, but a new way to live with it. An unfinished group that, unlike preserving itself until getting ‘to the point,’ was bravely showing off, turning everything into style.” Fashion. Art. Design. Cinema. Panties thrown and received. Micro shorts and dirty legs. How does it happen? It happens like this…

Bogdan Ra kicked off his new label Love Affair with some banging house cuts that threw it back to early Chicago styles. This third outing flips the script and shows his range with four disco sounds that take their cues from the late 70s and 80s: all the hallmarks are there, from the classic synths and vocoders to dusty drum machines. 'Complimento' is a smooth title track, while 'Shout' is a French-tinged funk workout., 'Paramour' glides through cosmic disco textures, while 'Fire in Cairo' brings an unexpected vocal twist and acrobatic bassline full of movement. Charming stuff.
