The Chronic - 30th Anniversary Edition

'One, two, three and to the fo', Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr Dre is at the Do' - AH 'The Chronic' was the cornerstone of Death Row's initial success when it was released in 1992. The impact of major hits such as 'Nuthin But A G Thang' was astounding. Suddenly hip-hop was on US national radio gaining wide spread acceptance in the smoother life style of the suburbs world wide for its very special message, style and rhythm generated in the tough surroundings of the LA ghettos.

It was Dr. Dre's first solo album after he had departed from NWA and its label Ruthless Records over a financial dispute. On 'The Chronic', he included both subtle and direct insults at Ruthless and its owner, former NWA member Eazy-E. Although a solo album, it features many appearances by Snoop Dogg, who used the album as a launch pad for his own solo career.

Certain to hit the spot for fans of Abstract Orchestra's 'Dilla' set, the latest offering from multi-instrumentalist and producer Sly5thAve is a sumptuous orchestral jazz tribute to the phenomenal production of Dr Dre. Taking us through both the hits and lesser known moments in Dre's career behind the controls, "The Invisible Man" delivers a soulful and smooth selection of visionary jazz workouts. Joining the dots between the Doc and the 70s composers he sampled (David McCallum, David Axelrod), this dope set features excellent collaborative appearances from Will “Quantic” Holland (‘The Edge’) and Marc de Clive-Lowe (‘Drelude for Woo’) to Jimetta Rose (‘Let Me Ride’) and Melissa McMillan (‘I’d Rather Be With You’), each significantly contributing to the album’s rhythmic and melodic flair.

    Dr Dre

    Compton - Vinyl Edition

Dre's back with his first album in 16 years. Apparently inspired by seeing his younger self portrayed in the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton, he ditched the work from the much delayed 'Detox' album (a "hip hop musical"!) and started afresh. The result is 'Compton', an album that looks back to Dre's past, but also brings a fresh perspective by including a roll call guest MCs (Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Anderson .Paak etc). Beat building and production-wise, 'Compton' shows Dre hasn't lost his touch, layering live and digital percussion and instrumentation, plus samples and raps into one killer long player. Includes breakout track 'Genocide' featuring Kendrick Lamar - G anthem for the Michael Brown era.
