Further Combinations

A companion mini-album to 'Heavy Combination', last year’s career-spanning compilation documenting some of the amazing music recorded over five decades by the late Joseph Kamaru, a towering figure in post-colonial Kenyan culture. This new record presents five more gems from the archives, chosen by Disciples and Joseph Kamaru’s grandson, the sound artist KMRU. Carefully remastered from original tape transfers, with liner notes by Kenyan academic Maina wa Mũtonya.

Bogdan Raczynski

Scroll Till You Die

The perfect soundtrack to your next doomscrolling session. A new double disc anthology set from Rephlex alumni Bogdan Raczynski, which pairs his critically-acclaimed 2024 album, 'You’re Only Young Once But You Can Stupid Forever', with the 2025 companion set (previously only available digitally), 'Slow Down Stupid'.

The main album is a collection of warmly melodic electronic sketches, with tracks alternately drifting beatless on the breeze or underpinned by lo-fi drums, sometimes barely held together with a delicate construction of odd synth patches and ping-pong percussion. Mojo called it ““a satisfyingly lo-fi, fragile creation, it’s a nuanced, multi-layered insight into Raczynski’s increasingly becalmed world.” whilst DJ Mag said “By stripping the music to the barest sketetal parts, he discovers a more subtle, yet equally confounding beauty. It’s one worth taking from start to finish.”

On the second disc, the producer stretches out the material into even more languid sonic pastures, a cheeky deconstruction of both the ‘slowed and reverbed’ phenomenon, and the endless relax/yoga/meditation app/playlist hustle beaming from one dystopian tech platform to the next.

Joseph Kamaru

Heavy Combination 1966-2007

A crucial introduction to the ‘King of Kikuyu Benga’.

17 tracks that run the gamut from vibrant dancefloor chants with high life-esque guitars, to afro funk, drum machine and keyboard-driven disco grooves and folk style laments.

The music is raw, immediate, danceable, and packed full of memorable hooks. The incisive lyrics range from protest songs to relationship advice.

Joseph Kamaru was an incredibly popular figure in his native Kenya, connecting with everyone from high-powered politicians to the rural and urban working class, and his music deserves a much wider international audience.

Compiled by his grandson, the sound artist KMRU, in partnership with Disciples, the tracks have been carefully remastered from original tape transfers by Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.

Sleeve designed by Karolina Kołodziej using original archive material from the Kamaru family vaults.

Extensive liner notes include essays by Kenyan academic Maina wa Mũtonya, music journalist Megan Iacobini de Fazio and KMRU himself.

Volcanic Tongue

An eclectic compilation album celebrating twenty ‘tips of the tongue’ from David Keenan, released to coincide with a book of his collected music writing.

As well as being the title of a book. Volcanic Tongue was a record shop that existed in Glasgow from 2005 to 2015, run by David Keenan and Heather Leigh, it championed contemporary DIY music from around the world, often released in tiny runs on homemade CD-Rs, and also sought to shine a light on forgotten artists from the past, who had often released their music as a ‘private press’ LP. The shop was also known for it’s weekly mailing list, with Keenan enthusiastically rapping about new arrivals, especially the record of the week, given the sobriquet ‘tip of the tongue’. This collection has been put together from releases that were a ‘tip of the tongue’, containing music that runs the gamut from outsider synth to psych-folk to damaged rock’n’roll, with tracks recorded between 1968 and 2013, a celebration of a vibrant and eclectic underground avant-garde.

Printed inner sleeves with original notes on each artist by David Keenan, housed in a sleeve designed by Julian House.

Dennis Bovell - Sufferer Sounds: Rare Dubs, Roots And Lovers Rock From The Legendary Producer

Dennis Bovell’s prolific and eclectic career encompasses a huge range of music: from dub poetry to lovers rock, to post-punk, to disco, to pop and beyond. His production work encompasses such diverse figures as The Slits, I Roy, Maximum Joy, Fela Kuti, The Pop Group, Janet Kay, Saada Bonaire, Orange Juice, Golden Teacher, Steel Pulse, and more.

This compilation focuses on the period during and immediately after Bovell’s involvement with the Jah Sufferer Sound System, digging deep to find deep cuts and lesser-known versions, mainly from 1976–1980, plus a killer and lesser-heard dub of the iconic 'Silly Games'. Painstakingly restored and remastered at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin, these decades-old tracks sound pristine and dynamic, sequenced to take the listener on a journey through Bovell’s production and arrangement genius.

The accompanying sleevenotes are a result of a long conversation with Dennis about this period of his life, with track-by-track recollections and fascinating biographical asides. The vinyl and CD versions feature variant artwork, each format utilising a unique photo by Syd Shelton.

Bogdan Raczynski

You’re Only Young Once But You Can Be Stupid Forever

A collection of warmly melodic electronic sketches, with tracks alternately drifting beatless on the breeze or underpinned by lo-fi drums, sometimes barely held together with a delicate construction of odd synth patches and ping-pong percussion. Each piece is short and to the point, a record of perfect miniatures. Whilst this description may sound utopian, the album is conceived around themes of late stage capitalist brutality, hyper consumerism, online doom and alogorhithmic apocalypse. Beauty in the face of planetary collapse and 24/7 livestreamed genocide.

Rumoured to have been discovered by Aphex Twin sleeping on a park bench in Tokyo, Raczynski first appeared on the scene in 1999 with 3 albums in that year alone. He went on to explore hallucinatory, bassbin-rattling IDM, outsider junglism and traditional Polish folk music amongst other paths, collaborated with Björk, produced a soundtrack for a PlayStation game, and remixed the likes of Autechre, Jonsi, and CLIPPING. In 2019, Disciples began looking after his Rephlex era catalogue, putting together the Rave 'Till You Cry compilation of unreleased gold from the vaults, and reissuing his classic Samurai Math Beats LP. His last studio album, ADDLE, came out on Planet Mu in 2022.

"Bogdan was a massive inspiration for some of my tracks on the Drukqs album, the fact he was doing it all on a shit PC tracker… totally amazing. This was before 99.9 percent of people used the computer for everything. His records are so underrated." - Aphex Twin

Wolf Eyes

Dreams In Splattered Lines

Dreams In Splattered Lines fuses together Wolf Eyes' 25 years of DIY electronics with the avant-garde sensibilities of Fluxus and the granite of dreary Midwestern life. Continuing some of the ideas explored on the Difficult Messages record of collaborations, the result is a surreal dreamscape of disorienting sound collages, where hit songs are transformed into terrariums of sonic flora and decimated fauna. As if pulled from a fever dream, the surrealists of the 1960s converge with alien electronic blues musicians in an underworld of mystery. The air is thick with car wash radio white noise, crackling and fizzing like a toxic elixir, spoken word poetry transmissions as absurd and cryptic phrases. Each corroded aural environment is a microcosm of chaos, honed to razor-sharp precision. Swept away in a whirlwind of thirteen perplexing narratives, each one an unpredictable journey through subterranean worlds, a sonic trip of reality folded into itself.

Saint Abdullah & Jason Nazary

Evicted In The Morning

A unique dialogue between the electronic textures of Saint Abdullah with the live drums of Jason Nazary (Anteloper).

Saint Abdullah consists of Tehran-born brothers Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh, who have been exploring a diverse palette of sounds over their releases to date, including collaborations with Eomac on Nicolas Jaar’s Other People label, and Model Home on Purple Tape Pedigree, as well as their own duo album on Important Records.

Jason Nazary is a drummer and composer from Atlanta and based in Brooklyn. Fascinated by the intersection of acoustic and electronic music, Jason has been a force in New York's creative music scene for over a decade. As well as his own solo work he also co-leads a number of ensembles, among them the dystopian electro noise duo Clebs with singer Emilie Weibel, and until recently Anteloper, an improvising modular beat shredding duo with the much-missed Jaimie Branch.

The longform instrumental pieces of ‘Vertical Jamming’ first appeared on a self-released tour only CD in 2016.Subsequently they were issued in a mail order cassette edition by Disciples. The pieces have now been specially edited by Phew for this first time clear vinyl pressing, cut by Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.

Phew is a legendary figure in Japanese underground music. Starting out in 1978 fronting one of Osaka’s earliest punk groups, Aunt Sally, and going on to collaborate with a whole host of notable names as a solo artist in the 80s, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Conny Plank, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of Can, Alex Hacke of EinstürzendeNeubauten, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. In recent years she has made music on record or live with Ana Da Silva of The Raincoats, Jim O’Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Ikue Mori, and Yoshimi of OOIOO / Boredoms / Saicobab.

Trust No Wave

A reissue of the 2016 demo tape by the New Orleans band who combine elements of no wave, glam and industrial music. First time vinyl pressing with bonus track, new sleeve designed by Studio Tape Echo and 8 page risographed zine insert.

Four of the tracks here are raw early versions of songs that would appear in slightly more refined form on their debut album, 2018’s Spiralling. The other four pieces are unique to this release, including a cover version of Italian new wave band Chrisma, raging opener “Disease”, the over-saturated shoegaze-punk of “ATC” and comedown lament “I’ll Never Do Ketamine Again”. The band’s second album The Passion Of (2020) was widely acclaimed and appeared in many album of the year lists. It was recently followed by a companion album of remixes on Boy Harsher’s Nude Club label, with all profits going to NOLA charity House Of Tulip.

“A blistering vision of punk as possibility.” - Pitchfork

“Members Alli Logout (vocals), Ruth Mascelli (synth and drum machine), Maria Elena (guitar), and Nathan Cassiani (bass), together manage to make their instruments and vocals sound like a fight for our existence.” - The Quietus

His Name Is Alive

Hope Is A Candle - Home Recordings 1985 - 1990 Volume 3

For the past couple of years the Disciples label has been exploring the early tape archives of Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive, a wealth of home recordings that he amassed whilst growing up in suburban Michigan, prior to signing to 4AD in the late 1980s.

These records have charted the development of their sound over 3 roughly chronological volumes - All The Mirrors In The House in 2019, Return To Never in 2020, and we're now bringing the trilogy to a close early in the new year with third and final volume, Hope Is A Candle.

Pressed once again as a limited edition clear vinyl LP with no banding and a printed inner sleeve with sleevenotes by Mike McGonigal (author of books on My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500 and noted for his publications Chemical Imbalance, Yeti and Maggot Brain), alongside beautiful photos from the Defever family album, the whole package designed by Studio Tape Echo. Please note the first two LPs are now sold out and we don't expect this latest volume to be in stock for very long.

Alongside the LP there is also a 4CD boxset that anthologises the whole series. A disc for each album in the trilogy, plus a bonus disc which collects together the best tracks from a series of mail order cassette companion volumes that Defever compiled to go alongside each LP - 6Teen OK, Return Versions and Ghost Tape EXP, and a 36 page book. This is also limited to 1000 copies worldwide and won't be re-pressed.

His Name Is Alive

All The Mirrors In The House: Home Recordings 1979 - 1986

Transcendental tape loops and bedroom ambient dream states from the teenage mind of Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive. ‘All The Mirrors In The House’ is the first of three projected releases of very early works by the Detroit-based savant, prior to signing to 4AD in the late-1980s.

With help transferring ageing cassettes and annotating the results from Shelley Salant of Tyvek, the unearthed results are revelatory - a gorgeous sequence of gently decaying tone float made with an incredibly primitive DIY set up.

As Defever recounts in the liner notes: “By age ten, I had a tape recorder and was using it to capture the sounds of nearby lakes, thunderstorms, and my older brother’s LP collection played at the wrong speeds. As a teenager, I got deep into all kinds of music - punk, new age, blues - and played bass in the high school jazz band, as well as studying Bach chorale harmonization and counterpoint. My first album consists of rhythm tracks made of loops of the next door neighbour raking leaves and shoveling the driveway with echoey guitars and vocals with lyrics about ghosts.”

Innersleeve essay and interview by Mike McGonigal, the founder of Chemical Balance magazine and YETI publishing and the author of acclaimed books on My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500.

For fans of Eno’s Ambient series, William Basinski, Kranky Records.

His Name Is Alive has had over a hundred releases since their first cassette in 1986. His Name Is Alive spent 13 years recording for the legendary label 4AD and sold over 100,000 records, toured the world, received gold and platinum records for soundtracking Tom Cruise’s nervous breakdown in the movie ‘Jerry Maguire’ and collaborated on two short films with famed animators the Quay Brothers and name-checked by David Bowie as one of his favourite artists.

Warren Defever continues to live and work in Detroit - he has recently recorded ‘Universal Eyes’ for Lower Floor Music and is one of the engineers heading up Third Man’s recently opening mastering studio.

Bogdan Raczynski

Rave 'Till You Cry

Disciples follow up the raid on the archives of Black Lodge with ‘Rave "Till You Cry" by enigmatic producer Bogdan Raczynski, a collection of unreleased tracks and versions. Raczynski arrived on the scene in 1999 with not one but three albums released in quick succession that year alone on Rephlex Records. A unique operator even by Braindance standards, rumoured to have been discovered by Aphex Twin whilst sleeping rough in Tokyo. A steady stream of records followed, hyperactive broadsides of percussion set off by a winning knack for the buried earworm melody, much like his mentor Richard D James. He also memorably collaborated with Björk and remixed Autechre for Warp’s "10+3" compilation but things have been quiet since the release of his last studio album "Alright!" in 2007.

"Rave ‘Till You Cry" signals a return across 18 tracks selected and sequenced by Disciples, joining the dots between the outsider junglism of the "96 Drum n Bass Classixxx" ‘compilation’ and his earliest rephlexions on hallucinatory, bassbin-rattling IDM with "Boku Mo Wakaran". Across one CD or four sides of vinyl, the joyous sugar-rush tunes of classic 1990s Nintendo games meet drill-like breaks, ambient drone and slabs of bit-crushed noise. It also showcases a more introspective side to the Bogdan sound, the soundtrack to a labyrinth of tunnels loaded up with gurners starting to feel unwell as the early hours begin to dissipate into the harsh rays of morning light.

Much like the recent resurgence of Digital Hardcore’s Christoph De Babalon and the off-kilter time signature of recent records by Demdike Stare and Rian Treanor, Bogdan Raczynski’s return is a timely reminder of menace and beauty contained within irregular rhythm science.
