DEVIANT DISCO

Deviant Disco make their first appearance on the Piccadilly shelves with four dope and diverse examples of les disco Francais. If you're on the hunt for 80's Afrobeat, French Canadian cosmic, sci-fi library pop or mad-as-shit minimal wave then this is the disc for you. Guéhi Jean is a key figure in the world of Ivorian music and his innovative fusion of funk, jazz and Afrobeat has become top of a whole load of wantlists. Having left Africa to make it in France, he recorded this magic digital Afrobeat winner in Paris, then went back to his native country without any of the recognition he deserved. This cut kills it with rubbery bass, rhythmic guitar and a succession of sumptuous keyboard motifs supporting Jean's mega vocal. Next up we find ourselves caught in the wiggy spell of Michel Conte's "Magoshan'. Whether it's a disco anthem composed for Quebecoise cultists wearing flares or the main theme from an obscure horror series, it's certainly funky and straight to the front of my battle box - check the clips and lose your shit. Over to the flip and we're walking in space with the galactic groove of Jean-Michel Gascuel's "Dominus", a total oddity from the vaults of this celebrated French composer, collaborator of Pierre Schaeffer and Vivian Vee and chic fashion designer. With its Latin touch, this track is a little UFO standing out of the rest of his French productions, so let us be blessed by Dominus Domine Dominarum. Finally we feel the force of Michel Robidoux, with a rare cut featured on a kidisk with a book called “Visitons les Planètes avec Goldorak” and was released in Canada in 1980. This incredible space jam was chosen as a macaroon for this new EP – our tribute to an amazing composer who wrote more than 325 songs and even collaborated with Leonard Cohen. Vive La France!
