David Bowie By Denis O'Regan : From The Man Who Photographed Him Most

Official photographer to music legend David Bowie, Denis O'Regan presents a personal edit from his unrivalled collection of photographs. Accompanying Bowie on two world tours and enjoying a decades-long relationship with the star, no one photographed Bowie more than Denis O'Regan. As Bowie himself once remarked, 'Denis, Rock 'n' Roll is in your blood'.

From the door of Olympic Studios, where Bowie recorded Diamond Dogs in 1974, to live stadium shows in the 1990s, Denis's full archive is at last opened and many unseen images revealed for the first time. David Bowie by Denis O’Regan tells Bowie's musical story in pictures, with O'Regan's own words relaying his experience of documenting that incredible journey. Author of the hugely successful Ricochet: David Bowie 1983 (Particular Books, 2018), O'Regan has toured with the biggest stars from The Rolling Stones and Queen to Pink Floyd and Duran Duran, to name a few.

But it is his photographs of David Bowie, taken over two decades at over 200 concerts worldwide, that he is best known for. David Bowie the showman and David behind-the scenes, O'Regan has captured it all in this showcase of one of the world's most talented performers.

    Dennis Bovell

    Wise Music In Dub

Dennis Bovell - aka Blackbeard presents this brand new album that shows he's in the best musical form of his life - featuring tracks that are neither strictly dub nor instrumental but manage to incorporate elements of both, Dennis brought together a peerless team of musicians to collaborate on 'Wise Music in Dub'.

In full splendour here are vocalists Carroll Thompson singing on a cover of Minnie Riperton's "Les Fleurs", Imagination's Leee John providing vocals on The Stylistics "You're A Big Girl Now", Papa Dee on "Don't Stay Out Late", while Winston Francis and Brinsley Forde feature on "My Heart Is Gone" and "Black and White" respectively.

Included here also are drummer Perry Melius, who has contributed to Aswad and African Headcharge and is a member Billy Ocean's current live band, Robin Hopcraft on trumpet and trombone and Idris Rahman on saxophone, both of whom are members of Soothsayer's. Sarah Tobias played flute, Nick Straker was on keyboards, John Kpiaye on guitar, Duke Baysee on harmonica and Ras Happa on repeater. Swizz The Panist played steel pans on Dutchie dUb and dUb Delight, Fabio Marchiori played organ on dUb hEaD, and Ian Alleyne provided acid guitar for dUb Season.

By blurring the distinctions between dub, vocal and instrumental music, Dennis has breathed new life into the genre. He explains, "I wanted to give the listener an insight into what dub means in the 21st century, so I pushed and pulled on all the right stops to create a bang up to date but unmistakable dub record." On 'Wise Music in Dub' Dennis proves his enthusiasm for new challenges and musical escapades, combined with his irrepressible talent and playfulness, remains undiminished.

Dennis Bovell - aka Blackbeard - has changed the face of UK music. A bold claim, and one he might be shy to agree with, but true nonetheless. Born in Barbados in 1953 and moving to South London when he was 12, after forming his band Matumbi in the 70s, guitarist, singer, bass player and producer Dennis went on to work with a Who's Who of modern music and was a key figure in UK Lover's Rock while he was at it.

      Denison Witmer

      Anything At All

Denison Witmer returns with a new collection of ten vibrant and pensive folk-pop songs recorded and produced by Sufjan Stevens, his long-time friend and collaborator. 'Anything At All' finds Denison in a suitably reflective mood, mining sublime revelation from an ordinary, domesticated life. Topics like bird watching, carpentry, houseplants, and hiking offer insights into bigger, existential questions about life, death, meaning, and purpose. What are we doing with the precious time we have left on this earth? Whether it’s spent making clocks, gathering berries, planting trees, or putting the kids to bed at night, these songs suggest that a life lived with thoughtfulness and care can lead to deeper joy and fulfilment.

Recorded sporadically over a period of two years, Anything At All was primarily created at Sufjan’s Catskills studio during the pandemic, with additional sessions recorded by Andy Park, in Seattle, WA. Contributors include Stevens and Park as well as Sam Evian, Hannah Cohen, Sean Lane, and Keenan O'Meara, amongst others. The album’s musical aesthetic marries Denison’s folksy, Mennonite vibe with Sufjan’s signature bells and whistles: lush strings and woodwinds, women’s choir, and an occasional jazzy saxophone weave their way around Denison’s matter-of-fact vocals and acoustic guitar. These are simple folk songs with bursts of awe and wonder

Portraying dark themes and damaged characters through an empathetic filter of bittersweet optimism, 'This Road' is a work of contrasts, which musically matches the mixed emotions felt in life. Bass pressure, contemporary club beats, nourishing roots music, sumptuous instrumentation and accessible, pop-schooled melodicism are woven together by her soothing but heavy-hearted voice, which is perfectly matured and full of depth.

Saturated in vibes and an ingrained cognitive understanding of recording, 'This Road' is in part the product of childhood/teenage osmosis spent imbibing the sounds at her father Adrian Sherwood's On-U Studios. The impressionable youth gained an unparalleled education in music and also human nature, living in a house/studio where Lee Perry, Neneh Cherry, Jah Wobble, Big Youth, Little Annie, Style Scott, Tackhead, Bim Sherman and countless more made tracks.

Like an epic coming-of-age movie focussing on Denise's part in the ongoing On-U chronicles - charting her changing roles as daughter, musician, mother, lover and more - it's little wonder 'This Road' is both contemporary and timeless, spanning time like a family tree.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Toeing the line between groove-led hip-hop, 90's downbeat and reggae, this collection from Denise Sherwood has every bit of the groove of the On-U archive, but with a fresh and invigorating ambience.

        Denis Sulta

Aye Spoake Te Sumwuhn & They Listenhd

With our close relationship with Rubadub in Glasgow, we spotted Denis Sulta's pre-destined path and rise up the dance music pyramid sooner than most. Much like his predecessor Jackmaster a decade previous, there was an initial spark to the DJ / producer which had the full support of his loyal home town crew, ensuring his message was hammered far and wide at every opportunity.

Now a household name amongst the under 30's, not least for his outrageous festival antics, flamboyant DJ performances and unrelenting residency at Sub Club; he's recently, and relatively quickly, garnered the cover of Mixmag and joined Radio 1's Residency show to add to his credentials.

His first album, on prestigious label Ninja Tune, it serves to showcase the energetic and rambunctious DJ style he's become famous for whilst also showing a depth of studio technique that belies his less-that-serious public image. Aligning itself with the hedonism of Glasgow's night life, whilst journeying through the more electric experimental and nocturnal moods of dance music without revisiting over trodden ground the LP, "Aye Spoake Te Sumwuhn..." is Sulta's battle cry to the global audience.

Set to play on increasingly bigger and bigger stages, this affirmative, recklessly naive yet confident LP finds (real name) Hector marching up the hype mountain with his trademark hefty beats and screaming synths wailing gleefully at the moon and the dancefloor. You'll want to stay hydrated, it's a marathon not a sprit!
