The Delines

Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom

The Delines fourth record, came from a night in Dublin, Ireland, when singer Amy Boone asked Willy Vlautin to write a romantic tune. It’s the story of two ragged misfits: a failed criminal and a depressive house cleaner who somehow hit the lottery in meeting each other. With that song the soul of the record was found: ragged couples on the run. Recording began at Bocce Studios with longtime collaborator John Morgan Askew. The record features Amy Boone’s lush, world worn voice, the cinematic production skills of Askew, and the horn and string arrangement of Delines keyboardist and trumpeter, Cory Gray. This is wide screen, CinemaScope, Delines at their best.

'Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom' is the Delines most realized and strongest album to date, a record of romantic misfits and grifters who live out of suitcases and cars, who can’t seem to settle down, who hope that in the next town or city will be the score that saves them. 'Mr. Luck & Ms. Doom' features the stalwart Delines line up: Amy Boone on vocals, Cory Gray on horns and keyboards, Sean Oldham on drums, Freddy Trujillo on bass, and Willy Vlautin on guitar.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A swooning collection of drifting, soulful country rock and perfectly performed loungey jazz business. Brilliantly uplifting at points, but heartfelt and mournful in others, a beautiful modern interpretation of classic soul.

      The Delines

      Colfax - 2022 Reissue

The Delines debut album, repressed on black vinyl.

The debut album from The Delines, Colfax is a stunning & timeless collection of songs with the intimacy of a midnight confessional. Like a beat-up Dusty Springfield after too many long nights working a dreary after-hours bar, Colfax has the skid row heart of Tom Waits, the street-tough weariness of early Rickie Lee Jones, and the cool, laid back sound of Mazzy Star.

        The Delines

        The Sea Drift

The third album proper for 'Country-got-Soul's finest, The Delines, on Decor Records sees them exploring the US Gulf Coast, not far from where Amy Boone grew up. The songs in this cinematic opus all focus around this area and are inspired by when Amy asked Willy Vlautin to write her a song like Tony Joe White's 'Rainy Night In Georgia' after her tragic accident being hit by a car in 2016 and her 3 year recovery. This follows on from 2019's The Imperial which was number one in the UK official AMA charts for two weeks. Written and partially recorded before lock down the rest of the album was finished last Summer, produced by John Morgan Askew at his Bocce studios just outside of Portland, Oregon.

The album features the classic line-up of the band with Amy Boone (vocals), Willy Vlautin (guitars, vocals, songwriting), Freddy Trujillo (bass), Sean Oldham (drums, vocals) and Cory Gray (keyboards, trumpet and arrangements) doing some of their finest work yet.

          Jerry Joseph

          The Beautiful Madness

Featuring Drive By Truckers as backing band with Jason Isbell. European tour with Drive By Truckers. Exclusive European release. Who the hell is Jerry Joseph? Well Patterson Hood and Jason Isbell think he is one of the best songwriters and performers ever, so much so they backed him up on his newest album. While he has been flying just under the radar in the US he is unknown in Europe and that is all about to change. This is his first ever European release and will be three months ahead of the US release. Not only are Drive By Truckers the backing band on his upcoming tour but they also recorded the entire new album with Jerry as his backing band. Jason Isbell features on one of the key tracks 'Dead Confederate' and Patterson Hood also produced the entire record. While Jerry is a legend in the US he has never had a British release after playing for over 30 years - with the Truckers supporting him on many of his early shows having. Woody Harrelson is a long time fan whom followed Jerry on tour in his early days - with the pair even writing together.

Jerry has toured the world playing in Japan, Australia, SE Asia, Latin and South America etc while remaining largely off the radar in the UK. His first major dates were supporting Richmond Fontaine on their farewell tour and now he returns for a European tour. This record was recorded at Matt Patton's studio, Dial Back Sound, in Water Valley, Mississippi with all the Truckers taking part. It is Jerry's strongest ever songwriting and written over a period of years while travelling the world, while Jerry also ran guitar school charities for children in the war zones of Iraq, Syria etc (a project which was recently covered by Rolling Stone US and France). His live shows are a force to be reckoned with, and he will be touring into 2021 throughout Europe.

              Don't Skip Out On Me

Richmond Fontaine and Deline's singer/songwriter, Willy Vlautin will release his fifth novel, 'Don't Skip Out On Me' on Feb 1 2018.

Hey Mr Ferryman is Mark Eitzel's tenth solo album, his first in three years, and the first full studio album recorded entirely in London. It was made at 355 Studios with Mercury Prize winner Bernard Butler (Suede, McAlmont & Butler). Butler produced and played all of the electric guitar, bass, and keyboard parts on the album. Hey Mr Ferryman features the vivid melodies long associated with Eitzel's former band American Music Club as well as Butler's distinctive guitar that serves to complement Eitzel's expressive vocals. Of that voice, Pitchfork once wrote: "If Leonard Cohen's voice is a story about the passage of time and Levon Helm's is a story about losing what is most precious to you, Eitzel's is about the circuitous roads we take in search of ourselves." Mark Eitzel has released over 15 albums of original material with American Music Club and as a solo artist. The Guardian has called him "America's greatest living lyricist," and Rolling Stone once gave him their Songwriter of the Year award.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Eitzel goes from the serene to the triumphant between one song to the next, the brilliant balladry of 'In My Role As Professional Singer And Ham' and the easy listening morose indie charms of 'An Answer' providing a soaring and stripped-back counterfoil to the more rocking pieces like the brilliant 'Mr Humphries'. A brilliantly balanced, and eminently listenable delight. Brilliant.

                The Delines

                Colfax - 2023 Repress

The debut album from The Delines, Colfax is a stunning & timeless collection of songs with the intimacy of a midnight confessional. Like a beat-up Dusty Springfield after too many long nights working a dreary after-hours bar, Colfax has the skid row heart of Tom Waits, the street-tough weariness of early Rickie Lee Jones, and the cool, laid back sound of Mazzy Star.

The Delines are led by vocalist Amy Boone (The Damnations TX), alongside the keyboard work of Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists) as well as fellow Portlanders Sean Oldham and songwriter/novelist Willy Vlautin (Richmond Fontaine) and on pedal steel, Tucker Jackson (Minus 5). Vlautin is no stranger to critical acclaim in the UK, enjoying cult success and stellar reviews from the like of Uncut, The Observer, The Times and Q Magazine as the frontman of Portland alt-country outfit Richmond Fontaine. The seeds for Colfax were sown in 2012 when Vlautin, so beguiled by Boone's heartbreakingly longing, yet resilient voice, wrote an album worth songs and built a band around her. Recorded at Flora Recording and produced with John Askew (Dodos, Alela Diane) in Portland, Oregon, Colfax tells haunting, modern stories through the musical lens of soul and roots music of decades past.

Décor Records presents the second album by Sacri Cuori "Rosario". Sacri Cuori's sound has elements of Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Piero Piccioni, Calexico, Ry Cooder and Tom Waits (some of his band perform on this album), John Convertino (Calexico), Stephen McCarthy (Long Ryders) and JD Foster (Green on Red) at the helm producing with Antonio. Think Spaghetti Western soundtracks crossed with desert rock and a bit of Nancy and Lee thrown in.

                  Mark Eitzel

                  Don't Be A Stranger

Mark Eitzel of American Music Club returns from his longest absence with his sixth solo album (as well as 9 albums with AMC), and it's his best solo work to date. Over the last three years Mark's life was thrown upside down. While working on demos to the new American Music Club album tragedy struck with Mark suffering a serious heart attack that forced him to bed rest for months where he re-evaluated his life. Mark decided the demos would work better as solo project than an AMC album and abandoned the recordings.

Then luck struck, a funder who had just won the lottery decided to lend Mark a hand by loaning him the money to record his album in a proper studio with an outside producer, real strings, real everything. The producer that brought Mark's vision was the brilliant Sheldon Gomberg (Rickie Lee Jones, Ron Sexsmith) "Don't Be A Stranger" is Mark's first properly produced solo album of new material since 'The Invisible Man' in 2001 (2008 Klamath being recorded by himself and not released in the US) Featuring the likes of Pete Thomas from the Attractions on drums, Vudi from American Music Club on guitar plus a full string section.

An operatically tragic tale is told in Richmond Fontaine's tenth studio album, The High Country. More than a concept piece, the Portland, Oregon four-piece have crafted a song-novel, in which a gripping tale is spun with fully fleshed-out characters, changing scenes, snippets of radio and spoken word passages. It's a spectacularly unique album housed in a digi-pack with full 8 page colour booklet.

Richmond Fontaine's frontman, Willy Vlautin, is a published novelist whose 2006 debut, The Motel Life, has just been turned into a major motion picture directed by the Polsky Brothers and starring Dakota Fanning, Stephen Dorff and Kris Kristofferson.

With Richmond Fontaine's latest album, he's combined that story-telling prowess with his songwriting gift to stunning effect. From stark, romantic ballads and dialogue sequences to raw Northwest garage rock and cinematic songscapes, this album sees Fontaine's musical trajectory soar far beyond their cowpunk roots, ably assisted by producer John Askew.

                    STAFF COMMENTS

Darryl says: More top quality Americana from Richmond Fontaine, with their tenth album. It's a bleak but absorbing tale that's spread across its 17 tracks, a 'tragic tale opera' if you like.

                    Mark Eitzel

                    Klamath

"Klamath" is Mark Eitzel's first proper solo album of new original material since 2001's "Invisible Man". Written and recorded in a log cabin in the middle of the woods - by the Klamath river, California. Eitzel producing with Franz Nicolay from the Hold Steady and Marc Capelle from American Music Club and Dave Douglas (who drums with Kelley Stoltz) guesting on the album. The pastoral - laid back, late night sparse feel to the album harkens back to Eitzel's folk influences of Nick Drake and John Martyn and earlier work with American Music Club.
