      Trio Valore

Return Of The Iron Monkey (15th Anniversary Edition Crystal Clear Vinyl)

The 15th anniversary edition of "Return of the Iron Monkey" from the legendary soul-jazz album from Trio Valore, the British supergroup that features Steve White (The Style Council) on drums, Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller, Richard Ashcroft) on bass and Seamus Beaghen (Madness, Desmond Dekker, Tom Jones) on Hammond organ. Originally released in October 2008, the album rapidly reached a cult status amongst mods, soul and rare groove fans and the vinyl has been sold out for a long time now. The 15th Anniversary reissue will be released on November 17thon limited edition Crystal Clear LP and digital deluxe edition with two bonus tracks: "Put Em Down (Muro Di Gomma mix)", which originally appeared as B side of the "Rehab" 45, and a cover of Roy Budd's classic "Get Carter".

Trio Valore has heavyweight roots in funk, jazz, soul and the modernist tradition combined with exemplary musicianship. Steve White joined The Style Council at the age of 17, and is considered by many to be the UK's finest drummer of his generation, playing on 15 albums with the legendary Paul Weller. As a solo artist, Steve has released 4 albums. As a sideman, he's been one of the founders of the Acid Jazz movement with Galliano and he played with The Young Disciples, JTQ and Working Week, through to New Orleans legend Dr John, the late great Ian Dury and Brit Pop icons Oasis. Recognized as the youngest musician to perform at Live Aid in Wembley in 1985, Steve has performed at Live 8 as well. Damon Minchella formed Brit Pop heroes Ocean Colour Scene, going on to sell over 3 million albums before leaving in 2004, has also been the first call bassist for Paul Weller for over 12 years. He has performed a with a whole host of other artists, including The Who, Dr John, Jimmy Page, Paul McCartney, Amy Winehouse and Carleen Anderson. Seamus Beaghen has played with a staggering list of artists including Iggy Pop, Morrissey, Supergrass, Babyshambles, Paul Weller, David Gray, Death In Vegas, Alabama 3, Madness, The Grid, Desmond Dekker, Barry Adamson and Tom Jones.

Together as Trio Valore they sing a simple song, they preach a sermon of groove and carry the torch of a great legacy forward, aiming their music at the heart and the feet – a dance band in the old school style. The 12 tracks of "Return of the Iron Monkey" are full of floor-shaking Hammond grooves, heavy deep funk & super dancefloor mod-jazz tunes. Amongst the album's highlights are the super hip versions of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab", Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" and the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" alongside groovy original compositions such as the boogaloo soul number "Dam Square" or the dancefloor jazz album's title track.

The reissue of Trio Valore's album is part of Record Kicks' 2023 initiatives to celebrate its 20thanniversary. Side by side with similar imprints like Daptone, Big Crown or Colemine Records under its motto "The explosive sound from Today's scene", Milan-based record label and music publishing Record Kicks, has been pitching the contemporary funk & soul scene since 2003. With over 250 releases under the belt, the label has released bands from all over the globe and earned support of VIP fans such as rap superstars Jay-Z, Tyler The Creator and Dr. Dre, who sampled the label's catalogue

      The Crystal Furs

      Beautiful And True

Perfectly riding between jangling ‘80s indie, ‘60s girl group bittersweet harmonies, catchy pop melodies, and personal/political punk lyricism. Portland, US-based three-piece The Crystal Furs have made their most honest and honed album yet in Beautiful and True. Technically their third long player the band see this as a second debut, coming as their first album ‘out and living as our real selves’. Getting a limited release on CD and digital through SubJangle in 2020 the album has been remastered and is coming to vinyl for the first time through Reckless Yes in 2021. Writing melodic, textured songs about anxiety, architecture, lesbians, and queer feels The Crystal Furs’ Beautiful and True is loud music for quiet hearts. Press and radio coverage for The Crystal Furs “Had The Crystal Furs been around in the late 80s – early 90s there is a possibility they would have been signed to Sarah Records, home of OG jangle pop bands like The Field Mice and The Reckless Yes

        Crystal Fairy

        Crystal Fairy

Crystal Fairy are a new band featuring Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes), Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Mars Volta, At The Drive In), King Buzzo (The Melvins, Fantomas) and Dale Crover (The Melvins, Altamont). It might seem like an unlikely musical match until you hear the primal pounding energy that’s psychedelic, psychotic, off kilter, unsafe and uncommon.

The whole idea for Crystal Fairy began when The Melvins and Le Butcherettes toured together and The Melvins started doing the song ‘Rebel Girl’ with Teri at the end of their set.

Teri sings, plays guitar and keyboards, Omar plays bass, Buzzo plays guitar and Dale’s on drums. It’s simple, sturdy and perfect. Between the four members they have like 150 years of musical experience and something like 40,000 records. Crystal Fairy are different, a stunning combination of punk, metal, psycho rock, blood rock and rabid rhythmic excitement.

          Crystal Antlers

          Rattlesnake / California

7" vinyl picture disc featuring C.R. Stecyk III hubcap on side A and palm trees on side B.

“Merging psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend.” - Pitchfork

Crystal Antlers have returned to their roots as an agile power trio of singer/bassist Johnny Bell, drummer Kevin Stuart and guitarist Andrew King and signed with high-powered L.A. independent Innovative Leisure to release their new album Nothing Is Real.

The band have accrued plenty of stories in a short space of time: their debut 7” was funded by a friend who also happened to be a bank robber; they completed the FYF Fest tour in a veggie-oil powered school bus, which got them on the front page of the Los Angeles Times.

Nothing Is Real is Crystal Antlers going beyond the beyond, with songs that rattle and ricochet from desolation to delirium. Opener “Pray” sounds like what would have happened if Black Flag’s Greg Ginn had produced the first Psychedelic Furs single; “Persephone” and “Anywhere But Here” match the desperate, relentless rhythm of the Wipers with the inside-out guitar melodies of the Pixies, “Licorice Pizza” recalls lost cult-punk heroes like the Flesh Eaters or the Embarrassment. On Nothing Is Real, you’ll feel as much as hear echoes of bands like Wire, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., especially on the bleak closer “Prisoner Song”— bands who knew beauty and noise could be the same thing. And for the first time ever on a Crystal Antlers recording there are also drum machines, synths and even 4/4 drum beats.

“Crystal Antlers aren’t really about making some shit we’ve heard before, but they do take notice of some important touchstones: powerful organ runs, ragged vocals and an ability to turn even relatively short songs into something that sounds beyond epic.” THE FADER

“Merging psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend.” PITCHFORK

            Marnie

            Crystal World

Crystal World is a glittering electronic pop album by Marnie, the moniker adopted by Ladytron lead singer Helen Marnie for her debut solo project, produced by Daniel Hunt and co-produced by Bardi Johannsson.

Recorded in Reyjavik, Iceland, in August 2012, Crystal World comprises ten original songs written by Marnie while Ladytron enjoy a temporary sabbatical. Crystal World evokes the collision of two spheres. In the midst of a volcanic electronic landscape, the heart and soul of Marnie merge to create a glacial pop affair. Frequently Marnie laments the sea, itself so suggestive of change and movement, a feeling which ebbs and flows across the record, luring the listener in despite the gathering emotional storm.

Focus track The Hunter was issued as a download single in May 2013. Hearts On Fire is another dark anthem with a pop chorus that builds until it's close. Venturing further into Crystal World, Submariner is a fragile tale to warm the coldest of hearts, while closing track Gold inspires just the right amount of melancholy, at the same time ending with soaring guitars and synths and an immense feeling of hope.

The cover design is by Laura Hussey, with photography by Lisa Devine, assisted by Mack Photography.

              Aristillus

              Devoured Trees & Crystal Skies

Simon of Aristillus had barely turned 16 when he started working as a cover folder for Fysisk Format. After a couple of months in modesty he started to bring along recordings by his band, clearly inspired by JR Ewing and the "big names" of the Fysisk Format hardcore legacy: Kaospilot, Snöras, Dominic and Manhattan Skyline. His efforts were of course laughed at by the rough-neck hardcore elite at Fysisk Format. But thanks to Simon's inhuman stubborness and networking skills, he scored a recording session with Haust-mastermind and producer Ruben Willem. Recorded and mixed in a mere two days, Devoured Trees & Crystal Skies is solid proof that Aristillus is the future of New Norwegian Hardcore.

The album shows a mix of noisy instrumental elements combined with more melodic vocals and guitar parts that can remind the listener of Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth and other bands that mix indierock elements with the energy of hardcore. Even though only one of four in Aristillus is allowed to drink, drive or vote by Norwegian law, they are not newcomers. Since the age of 11 they have slowly developed from a flute and synth duo (which disbanded when the flute player quit to pursue his computer gaming interests) to where they are at today. Aristillus are about to establish themselves as one of Norway's most promising new acts, having played with Bullet for My Valentine and is this year's must have at all the important festivals. The future is theirs.

              Sun Airway

              Nocturne Of Exploded Crystal Chandelier

It is hard to imagine namedropping both The Strokes and Animal Collective when describing a single band, but that is exactly what Pitchfork has done with Sun Airway while describing "Put The Days Away" and "Infinity", two tracks from the band’s debut album, "Nocturne Of Exploded Crystal Chandelier".

Hailing from Philadelphia, Sun Airway is led by songwriter Jon Barthmus, who is joined by fellow sound sculptor Patrick Marsceill. Recorded primarily in Barthmus’ basement studio over the course of 18 months, the album blends processed sounds, field recordings and timeless vocal melodies into their abstract fractured pop.

The duo expands to a full blown quintet when performing live, with projections designed for each song creating a wondrous sensory overload.

In addition to an ambitious live show, Sun Airway have been reinventing the music of others, with remixes of Delorean, Kisses, Here We Go Magic and more circulating around the internet.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Wonky, dreamy pop that can't quite make it to the mainstream and is all the better for it.
