It Could Happen To You - 2024 Reissue

Chet Is Back - 2023 Reissue

Recorded in Italy in 1962, 'Chet Is Back!' highlights the iconic trumpeter cutting loose on such bop-oriented workouts as "Pent-Up House" and "Well, You Needn't." Backed skilfully by a young cadre of up- and- coming European musicians, including the stellar saxophonist Bobby Jaspar and guitarist Rene Thomas, Baker sounds marvellous in both ballads and up-tempo tunes. It includes a stellar Baker version of the immortal "Over the Rainbow."

In New York - 2023 Reissue

Chet Baker in New York has Chet Baker playing with great East Coast musicians: Philly Joe Jones on drums, Al Haig on piano, the great Paul Chambers on bass, and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin added on three tracks.

Recorded in December 1958, Baker didn't sing on any of the tracks on the LP. "Soft Winds" was recorded during the same session as the rest of the tracks, but it wasn't initially included on the Chet Baker in New York LP, as it was originally going to be issued on a compilation LP by various trumpet players titled New Blue Horns. It has been added here in order to complete the original session.

            Chet Baker & Bill Evans

            Complete Recordings

Perennial jazz stars Chet Baker and Bill Evans rarely recorded together and this 2LP set, including a bonus track, represents all of their collaborative sessions.

By the time the music was taped, Chet was already known as much for his singing as for his trumpet playing, but all of the performances here are entirely instrumental.

After cutting these sides Baker and Evans would go their separate ways and these recordings remain the only testimony of their subtle and elegant musical interactions.

                It Could Happen To You

Seminal jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet 'The Price' Baker had a typically turbulent legacy within the scene. Whilst inspiring pivotal developments in 'cool', and described by jazz historian Dave Kelly as 'James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one'; his career was potmarked with drug problems, causing him to leave music for a while after a failed drug deal ended with some of his teeth being knocked out. Regaining his embouchure for a second wind, the musician died attempting to cross balconies at his home in Amsterdam whilst under the effect of cocaine and heroin.

"It Could Happen To You" is widely regarded as one of the artist's best albums. Released in 1958 it follows traditions set out on "Chet Baker Sings" (1954) and "Chet Baker Sings and Plays with Bud Shank, Russ Freeman & Strings" in that it features Chet singing some typical jazz standards in his new, 'cool' style. Differing from the aforementioned LPs, it also features tracks with no trumpet at all, Chet opting to 'skat' in place of traditional instrument solos. This version contains new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide To Jazz's writer Brian Morton and by Paris' prestigious Jazz Magazine.

"Brilliant song selection. This is an essential title in Chet Baker's 30-plus year canon." - Lindsay Planer, AllMusic
