CHARLI XCX

Avant-pop and electronic superstar Charli xcx has become an iconic figure in the arts, having helped expand the landscape of popular music over the last decade by seamlessly traversing the underground and mainstream with her artistic output.
Over the course of a trailblazing career, the multi-hyphenate creative has earned critical acclaim for her innovative style and entrepreneurial spirit and seen her forward-thinking approach reshape pop culture in the process.
She released her sixth studio album ‘BRAT’ in June which stands as the most critically acclaimed album of the year and landed at Number 1 on the UK Official Album Chart in October.
‘BRAT’ has well and truly made its mark on the cultural zeitgeist this year; the audacious campaign has seen Charli cause roadblocks around the world with her pop-up ‘PARTYGIRL’ DJ sets, break the internet with viral videos and surprise collaborations with the likes of Billie Eilish, Lorde, Addison Rae, Robyn, Yung Lean, Julia Fox, Chloë Sevigny, and Rachel Sennott and introduce a new tone of green to the social lexicon.
The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize 2024 while ‘Guess featuring Billie Eilish’ debuted at Number 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart, making Charli the first British artist to land at the top of the charts this year.
In October, Charli followed it up with ‘Brat and it's completely different but also still brat’ - a brand-new version of the critically acclaimed album featuring reimagined takes and innovative reworks of tracks from ‘BRAT’ featuring the likes of Julian Casablancas, Bon Iver, The 1975, Shygirl, Ariana Grande, Caroline Polachek and more.
Her lasting impact was cemented last year when Charli was honoured with the Visionary Award at the annual Ivor Novellos in London, while she also received the Powerhouse Award at Billboard’s Women In Music ceremony in March, the ASCAP Global Impact Award in May and Wall Street Journal’s Music Innovator Award in October.

Barry says: One of the greatest pop albums this year returns for those of you that couldn't get a copy the first time round, and this time it has more tracks! It's all in the name really, and the extras are every bit as good as the rest of the LP. Ace.TRACK LISTING

Ethan says: Is it possible to talk about music in 2024 without mentioning Charli xcx’s Brat? Backed by a masterclass in marketing, a hall-of-fame list of producers, and followed by remixes featuring pop music’s biggest stars, Brat is undeniably one of the most successful pop eras of the modern age.Throughout this album, Charli embraces a far more electronic direction. DJ culture is felt throughout, with the coke-fuelled closer “365” remixing opener “360”, whilst a series of PARTYGIRL-branded back-to-back sets launched the album. Producers like George Daniel, A. G. Cook and EASYFUN give this record its token EDM feel that helped it thrive in a pop landscape of short audience attention spans.
It also helps that almost any song here could’ve been the lead single, proven by the amount of ‘sleeper hits’ the album has produced. Think of “Apple” and Kelley Heyer’s unforgettable dance (which I’m sure you’ll find Millie recreating every so often), or Liam’s personal favourite “Talk talk”, with its pounding four-to-the-floor kick and glossy synths.
Despite Brat’s “365 party girl” mentality, Charli displays a vulnerability missing from earlier works, through the emotionally messy tribute to SOPHIE on “So, I”, or the Kero Kero Bonito-esque “I think about it all the time” in which the artist sings about the dichotomy between her bratty persona and a desire to settle down. That’s all without mentioning the biggest pop moment of the year in “Girl, so confusing”, where Charli sings about her uneasy relationship with popstar Lorde before they “worked it out on the remix” two weeks later.
No album better defines 2024 than Charli xcx’s Brat, and I’m sure years down the line we’ll still be referring to this summer as “Brat summer.”

As the last decade has unfolded, Charli XCX has only become more prolific, both as a performing and songwriter. This is particularly evident by the success of her most recent studio album, CRASH.

Now in 2020, Charli is already breaking boundaries - this year has seen her first BRIT nomination for British Female Solo Artist, marking a huge moment of validation from a mainstream audience that Charli has built on her own terms. In reaction to the global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, Charli has proven herself to be one of the most adaptable artists working today; initially providing programs of Instagram live sessions that invited various guests to spark conversation, share insight, or simply entertain fans across the world who are currently practicing social distancing. Charli’s vision then expanded further, leading her to announce ‘how i’m feeling now’ - a new album to be written, recorded and released in 39 days, completely in self-isolation. The creative process was also to push her collaborative stream in a unique way; opening up the recording, writing, artwork, music videos and more to fans for feedback and contribution - she also further inspired her fans’ creativity, allowing them access to song stems to create remixes and greenscreen footage to be edited using their own imagination.
‘how i’m feeling now’ has given further spotlight to Charli’s status as one of the most adaptable, exciting pop artists working today, and through it’s uniquely collaborative approach, provided a shared space for those who listen to feel safe enough to express themselves however they wish at a time when they need it most.
