Zeros

On Columbia Records - Eagerly anticipated sophomore release from 21 yr old singer-songwriter Declan McKenna.

    Fiona Apple

    Fetch The Bolt Cutters

Fetch the Bolt Cutters is a strange and exceptional record, even within the context of an uncommon career. It shakes, rattles and rolls with unorthodox percussion, and on the opening track – I Want You to Love Me – the singer hiccups in ecstasy, facing off against an arpeggiating piano as though competing to climax first.

Although veteran engineer/producer Tchad Blake had some input, and Apple sought the assistance of her drummer’s father, sound engineer John Would, Fetch the Bolt Cutters marks the first time she has entirely overseen production on one of her albums. Knowing her own mind is a major theme. “I would beg to disagree, but begging disagrees with me,” she swaggers on Under the Table, a wickedly funny song about how she is a nightmare date at pompous dinner parties. (“Kick me under the table all you want.”)

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Toeing the line skilfully between mellow jazz, soulful r&b and good old-fashioned indie, Fiona Apple has a sound all of her own. Spoken word sections segue seamlessly into more driven rhythmic material before calming right back down into almost ambient instrumentation. Brilliant, and bonkers.

            The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs - 2018 Reissue

              The classic debut album.

"Emerging from the incipient post-punk London scene with a healthy fascination for late-'70s Bowie (and in turn, for his own attraction to Krautrock), the then-sextet kicked up a slightly monochromatic but still attractive storm on their debut. Richard Butler's Thin-White-Duke-after-smoking vocal rasp has a surprising appeal, serving up a wry, slightly detached series of lyrics on life." All Music.

              The Psychedelic Furs

Talk Talk Talk - 2018 Reissue

"This time working solely with Steve Lillywhite, the Furs introduce a brighter, poppier side to their underground rock edge, with smashing results throughout. The group produces some powerful songs, even more rough-edged than before. Especially striking is "Dumb Waiters," with its queasy, slow-paced arrangement that allows both Kilburn's sax and Ashton's guitar to go wild. However, the six still create some undeniable pop classics. Most well-known is the lead track, "Pretty in Pink," inspiration for the iconic John Hughes film years later and re-recorded as a result. The original is still where to go, though, with Butler's catchy description of a romantically unsure woman matched by a killer band performance. Similarly lighter numbers on the record call to mind a rockier version of Roxy Music's output in later years: elegant, romantic angst given a slightly rougher edge in both music and vocals. "She Is Mine" is especially fine as a gently swinging number with some of Butler's best, quietly ruminative lyrics. Straight-up anthems abound as well, the best being the amazing "Into You Like a Train," which mixes the blunt desire of the title with a sparkling Ashton guitar line and a fast rhythm punch. Talk Talk Talk ends on another high with "All of This and Nothing." A soft, acoustic guitar-sax-rhythm combination introduces the song, then fades away for the main section to begin; Butler details bits and pieces from a lost relationship over a sharp full-band performance, and a final drum smash leads into a reprise of the start -- a fine way to end a fine record." Leonard Cohen

                Thanks For The Dance

In a posthumous new album, Leonard Cohen has robbed death of the last word. 'Thanks for the Dance' is not a commemorative collection of B sides and outtakes, but an unexpected harvest of new songs, exciting and vital, a continuation of the master's final work.

Seven months after his father passed, Adam Cohen retreated to a converted garage in his backyard down the street from Leonard's house, to work with his father again, to stay in the company of his voice. From their previous collaboration on 'You Want It Darker' there remained bare musical sketches, at times little more than vocals. Leonard had asked his son to bring these works to completion.

"In composing and arranging the music for his words, we chose his most characteristic musical signatures, in this way keeping him with us" - Adam Cohen

                  STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Brand new songs, NOT odds'n'sods and leftovers; this record feature material L.Cohen was working on in the months before his death. Who better to bring them to fruition than his son, Adam.

                  Rex Orange County

                  PONY

The album was written, recorded, and performed almost entirely by Rex himself at Strongroom Studios in East London with frequent collaborator Ben Baptie co-producing, engineering and mixing the album.

Pony includes "10/10", which Rolling Stone called "triumphant" and a "song you need to know" and Rex was described by Wonderland as "fast becoming a national treasure..."

The album follows standout performances at a handful of major festivals this year, including UK's Glastonbury (where he first debuted "10/10"), Paris' We Love Green, Berlin's Lollapalooza, and Australia's Laneway Festival.

                    Brittany Howard

                    Jaime

Eagerly anticipated debut solo album on Columbia Records, from lead vocalist/guitarist of Grammy Award winning ALABAMA SHAKES. ‘History Repeats’ is as much a personal song as it is a song about us as a human species,” says Howard. “Our times of success may propel us forward, but our repeating failures hold us back from evolving into harmony.”

Howard’s band on Jaime includes Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell, jazz keyboard player Robert Glasper and drummer Nate Smith. It was recorded at engineer Shawn Everett’s LA studio.

Jaime is named after Howard’s sister, who taught her to play the piano and write poetry, and who died of cancer when they were still teenagers. “The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being,” Howard says. “But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.”

The soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s heavily anticipated music-laden film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

Personally curated by Tarantino himself, the soundtrack is a love letter to the music of 1960s-era Hollywood. The Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood soundtrack features over 20 standout tracks from artists such as Paul Revere & The Raiders, Deep Purple, and Neil Diamond, as well as vintage radio advertisements, creating a true time capsule of a golden era of filmmaking.

Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood’s golden age. Written and Directed by Quentin Tarantino. Produced by David Heyman, Shannon McIntosh and Quentin Tarantino. Georgia Kacandes, YU Dong and Jeffrey Chan serve as executive producers. The film also stars Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate plus Al Pacino, Emile Hirsch, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning, Bruce Dern, Lena Dunham, and more.

Barry says: It's always a highlight seeing what soundtrack Tarantino has chosen for his films, and 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' continues the trend with a perfect selection. Evocative of Hollywood's golden era, and ram-packed with musical gems, this is a classic soundtrack to a brilliant film.

Here it is! This is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2014 collaboration album "Pinata", between Mid-West rapper Freddie Gibbs and DJ & super-producer Madlib. It continues with more of Gibbs' unmatchable, poignant and downright filthy commentary on lifestyle choices of the rich, holding and criminal with his misogynistic humour not necessarily to everyone's taste but hilariously quick, observant and on point throughout much of the LP. Madlib's schitzo-frenetic beats switch up quicker than the 49's backline, full of crate-dug crackle and a historic presentation of blacksploitation in the 21st century.

Featured artists include:- Pusha T, Killer Mike, Anderson Paak, Yashin Bay & Black Thoughts.

Matt says: As fiesty, potty-mouthed and charismatic as ever, Freddie Kane returns with Madlib on the dials for another xxxplicit account of modern manhood, street politics and the continuing hip-hop soap opera.

                          Primal Scream

                          Velocity Girl

Velocity Girl was originally released in 1986 and quickly become a landmark single for the British indie scene, inspiring the C-86 movement and a generation of guitar bands. For the first ever reissue – it has never been included on any Primal Scream album or compilation – it will be backed by Broken, a brand new song recorded earlier this year. The 7” will be available exclusively to Independent retail stores only.

                            Bruce Springsteen

                            Western Stars

Bruce Springsteen’s first new studio album in five years takes his music to a new place, drawing inspiration in part from the Southern California pop records of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The album was recorded primarily at Springsteen’s home studio in New Jersey with additional recording in California and New York. Columbia Records will release Springsteen’s 19th studio album on 14th June.

“This record is a return to my solo recordings featuring character driven songs and sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangements," says Springsteen. "It's a jewel box of a record."

The 13 tracks on ‘Western Stars’ encompass a sweeping range of American themes, of highways and desert spaces, of isolation and community and the permanence of home and hope.

Ron Aniello produced the album with Springsteen and plays bass, keyboard, and other instruments. Patti Scialfa provides vocals and contributes vocal arrangements on four tracks. The musical arrangements include strings, horns, pedal steel and contributions from more than 20 other players including Jon Brion (who plays celeste, Moog and farfisa), as well as guest appearances by David Sancious, Charlie Giordano and Soozie Tyrell. The album was mixed by 13-time Grammy winner Tom Elmhirst.

                              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There are few artists that can keep doing their thing year after year and smashing it every time. The Boss is clearly one of those people as the most recent outing shows Bruce in fine form, flitting perfectly between the southern country rock and hands-in-the-air balladry we've come to know and love. Classic Bruce.

Vampire weekend return for their newest full-length since 2013's 'Modern Vampires Of The City', this time choosing to go further down the Americana route hinted at on their first LP. We kick things off with the acoustic-heavy duo of 'Hold You Now' and 'Harmony Hall', the former stripping back everything to vox and guitar, accentuated with airy vocal samples and lo-fi hissing only to bring in a choral accompaniment, knocking things into grand orchestral territory. The latter of the two flits between melodic piano and insistent percussion, all accentuated with perfectly phased vocals and flickering acoustic guitar. The technique of stripping things back only to bring it all back in is not a new idea, but the way it's handled here is beautifully done, with filter fades and instrumental shifts clearly highlighting the differing sections without resorting to the usual verse-chorus tropes.

Move things along a little and we get a bit of synthpop atmospherics ('Unbelievably White'), plaintive jazzy progressions ('My Mistake') and funky angular soul ('Sunflower'), whilst still retaining the underlying sound that makes Vampire Weekend unique. At the heart of things, we still have the same playful progressions and flickering momentum of their earlier work (along with that unmistakeable vocal style and harmonic accompaniment), but brought up to date with a more mature outlook and delicate balance between beautiful harmony and patchwork construction of sound. Brilliantly inventive and warmingly original, this is Vampire Weekend but brought into the present.

                              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Vampire Weekend have always stood out from the crowd with their own particular brand of dreamy melodic indie, characterised by rapid changes in direction and richly textured instrumental passages. What we have here is a classic distillation of their sound, spread across a hefty 18 tracks. It was well worth the wait.

                                Social Cues

On their fifth album, UK based, Kentucky band Cage The Elephant have taken their garage rock roots and thrown in a heavy dose of Bowie-esque glam as they deal with the double header of classic rock’n’roll subject matter: the price of fame and heartbreak.

                                  Wu-Tang Clan

Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Coloured Vinyl Reissue

The classic debut from the Shaolin gang circa 1993 is one of the most important rap albums of all time, wrestling the initiative back from the West Coast gangsta crews and G-funk sound and taking hip hop to rawer, dirtier place altogether. The RZA's mix of kung fu movie samples and twisted soul loops gives a unique backing to the en masse duelling of Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Genius, Masta Killa et al. "Bring Back Da Ruckus" sets their stall out and things continue at a neck-breaking pace through the graceful "Can It All Be So Simple", the complexity of "Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'", threatening "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit", the scarily prescient "CREAM", Meth's evil signature theme, all the way through to "Protect Ya Neck" and "Tearz". Sheer brilliance.

Say the band – “the main themes of ‘resistance is futile’ are memory and loss – forgotten history – confused reality and art as a hiding place and inspiration. musically the album is obsessively melodic and in many ways references the naive energy of ‘generation terrorists’ and the orchestral sweep of ‘everything must go’. after delay and difficulties, the record has come together really quickly over the last few months, there has been a surge of creativity and old school hard work.”

MGMT return for their fourth LP, in almost exaclty ten years since their almost cripplingly popular debut, Oracular Spectacular. Breaking away from the catchy generation Y glitter-bomb of 'Time To Pretend' or 'Kids' could drive a less-determined duo to mania, but VanWyndarden Goldwasser are nothing if not tenacious.

Their newest lurches from queasy neon keys and vicious percussive flourishes (She Works Out Too Much, Days That Got Away) over the top of mellow, warped lounge into wistful melody-heavy glumtronica, swimming in atmosphere and packed to the brim with feels (Me And Michael, When You're Small).

It is a fascinating and capable return for MGMT, clearly showing they deserve more credit than those early hits have offered them. This is a nuanced and mature journey, fittingly showing a good cross-section of their sizeable talents.

Barry says: A true display of how far MGMT have come since their early hit singles, still embracing their synthy aesthetic, but bringing in a host of diverse stylistic influences to complete their warm and varied sound.

                                      Jackie Moore

                                      This Time Baby

Jackie Moore's 1979 disco bomb "This time baby" is pretty much as classic as it gets. An unfailing floorfiller that found fame on the dancefloors via DJ's like David Mancuso, Larry Levan and Ron Hardy, it is the epitome of a roof-raiser. Produced by Philly legend Bobby Eli (MFSB, Salsoul Orchestra, Stylistics, Barbara Mason) and mixed by underground Disco legend John Luongo this is an essential 12". Originally performed by The O-Jays Jackie's version ramps the energy right up to the max and cranks the heat up to 100. Everything is here, killer driving drums and percussion, THAT bassline, those drops, the cowbells, horns, strings and of course...... Jackie! This is a straight repress of the '79 pressing on Columbia and features the sweet b-side 'Let's Go Somewhere And Make Love', another breezy Philly number courtesy of Mr. Eli yet again. All round quality.

Patrick says: A true disco hitter which never quits, Jackie Moore's version of "This Time Baby" scores a perfect 10 for bassline, groove, vocal power and melodic energy. Get it bought!

James Mercer released "Heartworms" in March 2017. As a creative exercise, during those recording sessions, he flipped every song on its head, to re-record each song in the opposite way to the originals - Songs that were more rock & uptempo became slower & more acoustic, whilst the songs that were acoustic & slower in tempo, became more rocky & upbeat.

Barry says: How impressive that Mercer can remake a superb addition to his canon, but reversed. How does that work? Well, it works very well as it goes and adds a layer of intreague to these already superb compositions.

One of the most avant-garde pop records of the late 60s, the United States' only album spans psyche-fuzz, ambient easy-pop, big band, experimental electronics and tape cut-ups - but as ever, the sum is greater than its parts. Taken as a whole, it's one of those classic 'trip' albums whose strangeness really takes you aback! NUTS.

                                              Bob Dylan

                                              Modern Times

'Modern Times' is the thirty-second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, originally released in 2006. Following 'Time Out Of Mind'  and 'Love And Theft', the album was Dylan's third album in a row to be met with nearly universal praise from fans and critics. It continued its predecessors' tendencies toward blues, rockabilly and pre-rock balladry, and was self-produced by Dylan under the pseudonym "Jack Frost".

'Modern Times' became the singer-songwriter's first #1 album in the US since 1976's 'Desire'. It was also his first album to debut at the summit of the Billboard 200. At age 65, Dylan became the oldest living person at the time to have an album enter the Billboard charts at number one.

Arcade Fire return for their latest album since 2013's 'Reflektor', Quickly following the snap-release of their 'Everything Now' 12" released last month, 'Everything Now' (the album) bursts into the limelight. 'Everything_Now (continued)' precedes 'Everything Now' (i'm sensing a theme here), both of them working together to ease you back into the orchestral, epic ways Arcade Fire have long been known for. As soon as we kick in to the titular piece proper, we get longing but upbeat piano blazing a path melodically for Butler's unmistakeable vocal affectations, before introducing swarming strings and frantic pizzicato bass. It's not surprising that the piece ebbs and flows through minimalistic orchestral lulls to euphoric, instrumentally dense passages with ease, that being the Fire's Raison d'être, and it is achieved without any trouble here.

'Signs Of Life' walks a little more towards the disco dancefloor end of the spectrum, with old-school hip-hop affectations segueing easily into stabbing horns and rolling, grooving bass guitar. It's another sign of a well-heeled group of composers that they can flit between their oft-repeated (but unmistakeable) trademark sound and something a little more off-piste.

Move On a little bit, and 'Chemistry' is a blazing walk across a tropical Caribbean beach, with throbbing tropical percussion ducking the rest of the instrumentation, lending a noticeable compressor thump. Saturated, balmy swarms of reverb lurching into distorted guitar and multi-part vocal harmonisation for the call-response chorus.

While the duo of 'Infinite Content' and 'Infinite_content' seem identical (try telling that to a C++ programmer), they actually represent different sides of the same coin, with the blazing post-punk distorted power chords of the former being re-interpreted by the same band but on a beach, mojito in hand, and sun blazing down for the underscored iteration.

As we roll into the latter half of the album, 'Electric Blue' cuts an impressive shape with it's neon synths and treble-heavy falsetto putting things firmly into 70's disco territory, while the pulsing motorik rhythms and gothic sulk of 'Put Your Money On Me' and the stunningly evocative atmospheric longing of 'We Don't Deserve Love' are bookended with a closing version of 'Everything Now (continued)' but this time, minus the underscore. Details are everything (now).

Combined with Gahan's near suicide and lengthy recovery from drugs, things looked bleak. Happily, Ultra turned out a winner; hooking up with Tim Simenon, longtime U.K. dance maven and producer, Depeche delivered a strong album as a rejuvenated band." - All Music

It was a strange twist of fate which saw Leonard Cohen die so shortly after the release of his 14th, and ultimately final studio album. Unlike Bowie though, earlier in the year, "You Want it Darker" wasn't composed with his own death in mind. Naturally, mortality gets mentioned, but on which Leonard Cohen album didn't it!?

In his second interview to promote the record, Cohen had backtracked on a previous recent statement that he was "ready to die" and when distant muse and lover Marianne passed away earlier this year, Cohen's email to her in her final days had been made public, saying "I think I will follow you very soon". But his backtracking was funny and flippant saying he'd always had a gift for drama and intended to "live forever". Two further records were also suggested. As we now know, this wasn't to be.

"You Want It Darker" is definitely more sombre in tone; minimal and stately, he uses a co-writer for the instrumentation, and tastefully takes in soul, doo-wop and ofcourse folk traditions. But lyrically, whilst he mentions putting his "house in order", he's far from singing his own last rites. He does say in the title track that he's "ready Lord", but then treats us to such beautiful poetry and subtly varied sounds that the listener can't help but respond, " fair enough, but not YET!?"

An excellent album then, made instantly more dramatic by his sudden demise, but whilst the record comprises "lullabies for suffering" and yes it's soothing (and funny) as ever, he also notes that he "struggled with demons, they were middle class and tame." Acceptance, humour, just as you'd expect. A noble and fitting ending for one of the counter-culture's (remember that!?) true greats.

                                                        STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Stunning final album from the master poet.

Although she started her musical career fifteen years ago, at the tender age of fifteen, it's taken some time for Solange to hit her stride. Early albums saw the youthful singer in awe of her big sister (Beyonce for the three people in the world who didn't know, and Barry), trying in vain to emulate the glistening R&B of Bey, Kelly and Michelle. As she matured, Solange explored fashion, first as a model, then as a designer with her House Of Deréon fashion line, gradually defining her own aesthetic and identity in the process. All of which means, that in 2k16, Solange is ready to mark her mark on the musical map with a career defining, world changing LP of boundary pushing soul. While the charts are filled with the throbbing basslines and skittering hats of trap and EDM, Solange has served up an organic, original set of sincere and spiritual soul built on warm bass, delicate piano and inspired synth melodies. Then there's her voice; intimate, crystal clear and packed with emotion, perfectly narating the struggles of life in the modern world. One minute into "Cranes In The Sky" and I was nearly in tears, it is SUBLIME. Visually, sonically and thematically unique, this is a perfect LP of accessible RnB and fully deserves its place as a future classic. Multi-platinum selling US rock band Kings Of Leon release their hugely anticipated seventh studio album via Columbia Records. Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed into an experimental rock outfit during the 2000s. The Tennessee-bred quartet debuted in 2003 with the Holy Roller Novocaine EP, whose blend of raw, unpolished boogie rock was further explored on their debut full-length, Youth & Young Manhood.

The first Depeche album to sell over a million copies in the United States, "Violator" (1990) is often regarded as Depeche Mode’s finest work. Not only containing the world hits “Personal Jesus” (later beautifully reinterpreted by Johnny Cash) and “Enjoy The Silence” (with its epic video), each and every song on Violator is worthy of mentioning: for instance the beautiful and haunting album closer “Clean”, and two further hit singles “Policy Of Truth” and “World In My Eyes”, all fine examples of Gahan, Wilder and Gore’s combined magic.

                                                          Machine Gun

This new live album, fully documents the debut performance of Hendrix’s short-lived but eternally influential Band of Gypsys. They played four historic concerts at the Fillmore East in NYC – two on New Year’s Eve 1969, and two on New Year’s Day 1970 (which became the hugely popular ‘Band Of Gypsys’ live album). Never before has the first of these sets been available in its entirety. The vast majority of the performances have never seen the light of day at all. Eddie Kramer, Hendrix’s recording engineer throughout his life has newly mixed the audio from the original 1” 8 track master tapes, and it sounds amazing!

Alternative pop rock band Prefab Sprout formed in 1978 in Newcastle and rose to fame during the 1980s. Frontman Paddy McAloon is regularly hailed as one of the great songwriters of his generation. 'Steve McQueen' is their second album and was originally released in 1985. Smart, sophisticated and timelessly stylish, 'Steve McQueen' is somewhat of a classic, a shimmering indie / jazz-pop masterpiece sparked by Paddy McAloon's witty and inventive songwriting. One for fans of the Smiths, Everything But The Girl etc.

He quickly emerged as one of the era's most original and influential singer-songwriters, building a large and legendary body of work that continues to inspire artists and listeners alike. Much of Cohen's reputation and mystique was established by his early work for Columbia Records, particularly the five albums he recorded between 1967 and 1974. Now, these five classic albums, unavailable on vinyl for two decades, have been lovingly restored to their original LP format. For their new Sundazed editions, all five albums have been meticulously remastered and have been sourced from the original Columbia Records stereo masters in order to preserve the sound of the original albums. In keeping with the exacting standards for which Sundazed has become known, each album is pressed on high-definition vinyl, with complete original cover art.

The album features covers of twelve classic American tunes chosen by Dylan himself, from a diverse array of writers such as Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn and Carolyn Leigh.Much like the album's predecessor, "Shadows in the Night", every song on the album, except for "Skylark", was once recorded by Frank Sinatra.

Recently discovered in the vaults – 10 previously unreleased and virtually unheard studio recordings.

Including covers of Bob Dylan, Sly & The Family Stone, The Smiths, Led Zeppelin, Bukka White and Jevetta Steele, in addition to the first ever studio recording of his signature song ‘Grace’ and ‘Dream Of You And I’, an unheard original recording which informs the deeply intimate and profoundly personal mood of the album. These recordings represent the breadth of Buckley’s influences and talent for interpretation.

Recorded prior to the sessions which would become his seminal debut album ‘Grace’, these tracks offer a unique insight in to the creative process of a developing genius and inimitable immerging talent.

'Moth' was written and produced by the Chairlift duo - comprised of writer / producers and multi-instrumentalists Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly - over the course of two years in the band's own studio, which they built in an old pharmaceutical factory in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout the recording process, Patrick and Caroline both pursued other recording projects and collaborations - from Caroline penning a song for Beyonce and collaborating with SBTRCT and Blood Orange, to Patrick producing for Solange and Wet. Alongside these collaborations, Moth was born. It has strong pop and R&B leanings, but pared with their own distinctly Chairlift style, and led by Caroline's flawless and expressive vocals. The result is Chairlift's most commercial-sounding album to date. An evolution from their last album, 2012's Something, Moth is a very New York City inspired album. Listeners can expect to be led through an aural mix of big, rich pop inspired hooks, vibrating bass, lively brass and sensuous R&B inspired vocals, all anchored in the duo's meticulously crafted instrumentation.

                                                                    David Bowie

                                                                    Heathen - 180g Vinyl Edition

2002's 'Heathen' reunited David Bowie with producer Tony Visconti ('Space Oddity', 'Heroes', 'The Man Who Sold The World') for the first time in 20 years and featured guest appearances by Who legend Pete Townshend and Foo Fighter Dave Grohl. Townshend, who last worked with Bowie on the 1980 Scary Monsters And Super Creeps track "Because You're Young," contributes an incendiary lead guitar line to the track "Slow Burn," which Bowie called "the most eccentric and aggressive guitar I've heard Pete play."

"Slow Burn" also features a performance from The Borneo Horns, who accompanied Bowie on the Serious Moonlight tour while Grohl takes lead guitar duties on the Neil Young cover "I’ve Been Waiting." Other standout tracks on Heathen include the sublime "I Would Be Your Slave," the uptempo "Afraid," the epic "Slip Away" and "Everyone Says Hi," a beautifully melodic tune with a classic Visconti string arrangement.

“Heathenism is a state of mind,” explained Bowie. “You can take it that I’m referring to one who does not see his world. He has no mental light. He destroys almost unwittingly. He cannot feel any God’s presence in his life. He is the 21st Century man. There’s no theme or concept behind Heathen, just a number of songs, but somehow there is a thread that runs through it that is quite as strong as any of my thematic type albums.”

A breath of fresh air in the gangsta-dominated mid-90s, the Fugees' breakthrough album, 'The Score', marked the beginning of a resurgence in alternative hip-hop. Its left-field, multi-platinum success proved there was a substantial untapped audience with an appreciation for rap music but little interest in thug life. 'The Score''s eclecticism, social consciousness, and pop smarts drew millions of latent hip-hop listeners back into the fold, showing just how much the music had grown up. It not only catapulted the Fugees into stardom, but also launched the productive solo careers of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill, the latter of whom already ranks as one of the top female MCs of all time based on her work here. Not just a collection of individual talents, the Fugees' three MCs all share a crackling chemistry and a wide-ranging taste in music. Their strong fondness for smooth soul and reggae is underscored by the two hit covers given slight hip-hop makeovers (Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry"). Even when they're not relying on easily recognisable tunes, their original material is powered by a raft of indelible hooks, especially the great "Fu-Gee-La".

                                                                        Bruce Springsteen

Darkness On The Edge Of Town

Some rank this 1978 album as Bruce Springsteen's very best (well a recent poll in The Telegraph did!) and it does hit really hard: with tunes (every one's a winner) sound (powerful, dense Rock with some skyscraping guitar solos) and ofcourse, with words. Here Bruce's characters are blue collar dreamers, down but defiantly not out. It's like a Raymond Carver short story set to music.  The record was a huge triumph after a court case (musical) enforced a 3 year hiatus which was unheard of in the 70's. This was after his breakthrough album, Born To Run, so maybe a frustrated and even angry Boss poured all of his energy into making this record the beast that is. Anyway, it's an incredible piece of art. A must-have classic rock LP!

This was his poppiest record so far, but in no way corny or cheap: these were hugely uplifting songs, good-time, sunroof-down rock'n'roll with smart stories to tell. But on the other side of the coin were some enormo, tear-jerking classic slowies; simply amazing tracks like Independance Day, Point Blank, Drive All Night, The Price You Pay and ofcourse, the title track itself which has become a world classic. There is an embarrasment of riches on show on this record. No home should be without a copy!

Passion Pit’s new album Kindred is their third release and follows 2012’s Gossamer. According to frontman Michael Angelakos, the LP is inspired by his own personal experiences with bipolar disorder and finds him reflecting on his new take-charge outlook on life.

Everything is autobiographical. Everything is honest. This record was written around the time when I was trying to figure out what constitutes family: who loves you, accepting love, giving love. On Manners, I was like, “I have no idea what’s going on and I wish I did but I just don’t have the answers.” Gossamer was like, “This is what happened, I’m so sorry” — acknowledging what happened but not saying that I’m going to do anything about it. Kindred is like: “I’m really trying to make this work and be better.”

I’m actively trying to improve all my relationships and my lifestyle and my way of working and interacting with people. Everything. And that’s a really hard thing to talk about because it’s embarrassing. I just desperately wanted to be happy again in a way that wasn’t forced. I wanted to feel like I accomplished something. I did this. I finished this record. I’m doing all the promo. I’m doing everything that I said I was going to do.“.

Featuring 10 tracks, the Jack Frost produced album 'Shadows In The Night' is the 36th studio release from iconic superstar Bob Dylan & marks his first new music since 2012's 'Tempest'. The album was recorded 'live' in the studio with a five-piece band & features some classic ballads, stripped down, with no overdubbing & mixed as it was recorded.

Where as his self-titled debut album Bob Dylan had contained only two original songs, Freewheelin' represented the beginning of Dylan's writing contemporary words to traditional melodies. Eleven of the thirteen songs on the album are Dylan's original compositions.

"High Hopes'' finds Bruce Springsteen in a number of different musical settings, and includes the E Street Band members in various large and small combinations as well as guitarist Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) on eight tracks. Besides Morello, the album also includes appearances on several songs by Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008, on what Springsteen calls "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade." The album was recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City and marks Springsteen's 18th studio album. As Bruce writes in the albums liner notes, "I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording."

Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There's punk and reggae, but there's also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn't tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call. While many of the songs -- particularly "London Calling," "Spanish Bombs," and "The Guns of Brixton" - are explicitly political, by acknowledging no boundaries the music itself is political and revolutionary. But it is also invigorating, rocking harder and with more purpose than most albums, let alone double albums. Over the course of the record, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones (and Paul Simonon, who wrote "The Guns of Brixton") explore their familiar themes of working-class rebellion and antiestablishment rants, but they also tie them in to old rock & roll traditions and myths, whether it's rockabilly greasers or "Stagger Lee," as well as mavericks like doomed actor Montgomery Clift. The result is a stunning statement of purpose and one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever recorded." - Allmusic.

The teaming was quite controversial within the punk community, and the sound of Give 'Em Enough Rope is considerably cleaner, yet the more direct sound hardly tamed the Clash. While the record doesn't burn with the same intense, amateurish energy of The Clash, it does have a big, forceful sound that is nearly as powerful. What keeps Give 'Em Enough Rope from being a classic is its slightly inconsistent material. Many of the songs are outright classics, particularly the first half of the record ("Safe European Home," "English Civil War," "Tommy Gun," "Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad") and "Stay Free," but the group loses some momentum toward the end of the record. Even with such flaws, Give 'Em Enough Rope ranks as one of the strongest albums of the punk era. " - Allmusic.

With hindsight, this is a really good Rock record, and therein lies people's disgruntlement: less Punk, more Rock, but this is a band that always pushed forwards.

Produced by Steve Albini and recorded live at Rockfield Studios in Wales during the Winter of 2008, "Journal for Plague Lovers" features lyrics left behind by former guitarist Richey Edwards across all 13 new tracks.
Nicky Wire said of the decision to use Richey's words after all this time, 'The brilliance and intelligence of the lyrics dictated that we had to finally use them. The use of language is stunning and topics include The Grande Odalisque by Ingres, Marlon Brando, Giant Haystacks, celebrity, consumerism and dysmorphia, all reiterating the genius and intellect of Richard James Edwards'.

The cover features an original piece of Jenny Saville, whose painting also graced the cover of 1994's "The Holy Bible".

On the previous trilogy of records they've changed the music world and heralded new eras and scenes. From the jacking filter house of 1997's "Homework", an album which set the blueprint for the whole French touch scene, to the pop majesty of 2001's "Discovery", a sampledelic journey through the kaleidescope of 70s disco and funk, to 2005's "Human After All", the rough and abrasive record that in hindsight heralded the new wave of French electronic producers. They are rightly regarded as the leading electronic musicians of their time and not only have they recorded a hype worthy record, they've delivered a classic.

Drawing inspiration of the sounds of the 70s and 80s, "Random Access Memories" serves up bouncing disco (Worldwide summer smash "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself To Dance"), prog jazz ("Giorgio by Moroder" and "Touch") and West Coast AOR ("Instant Crush", "Beyond" and "Fragments of Time"). The influences are similar to 2001's "Discovery", but rather than samples, the album instead features an all star roster of collaborators from all over the musical world recorded live in studio sessions.

Those expecting an album of easy dancefloor hits will be disappointed, Daft Punk have never simply retrodden uninspired paths and have instead turned out an expansive and exhaustive journey through an era before house music, where sentiment and nostalgia is preferred over beats. But don't fear, the dancefloor won't be neglected entirely, album closer "Contact" is probably a hint of what they might have in store for us on the soon-come remix disc!

Featuring four chart hits, including the number one smash "Everyday People", "Stand!" virtually invented the 'progressive' funk of the 1970s and 80s, jettisoning the trappings of 60s soul and paving the way for a new sound that would influence other artists to this day.

All things wonderful about Sly & The Family Stone in the first years of their existence came together on their 1969 album 'Stand!'. The enthusiasm, the blurring of lines, the testing of boundaries; it all blends together in the funk of the Family Stone…

"Stand!" is one of those records that came to define the flower power generation; the activism in "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey", the psychedelic pulsating dance rhythms in "I Want To Take You Higher", the spirit of belonging in "Everyday People". "Stand!" isone of the most sampled records in hip hop and R&B. This is the pinnacle of Sly The Family Stone's career, and it has a rightful place in music history.

All in all they still has the same magic that was always there.

James Mercer returns with the much anticipated fourth album from The Shins. Recorded in LA and Portland last year, as well as providing his distinctive vocals, James also plays the majority of the instrumentation on the album too.

Miles marries Betty, gets the funk and this is the end result: Along with "Kind Of Blue", but coming from a completely different angle, "Bitches Brew" is probably Davis' most celebrated work. Recorded in three days in August of 1969 and often heralded as the first shot fired in the fusion movement, "Bitches Brew" melds jazz with rock, and as an essential part of any psyche-prog head's record collection as jazz fans. Davis had already spearheaded two major jazz movements (cool and modal jazz) and was about to initiate another major change (the album's cover also sports the phrase "Directions In Music By Miles Davis" above the title). Most of the musicians (Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea ) who played on the album went on to become giants of the 1970s fusion movement, with "Bitches Brew" being the jump-of point. Artists as disparate as Carlos Santana, Joni Mitchell and Radiohead cite this epic long player as an influence.

                                                                                      Them Crooked Vultures

New Skin For The Old Ceremony

By the time Leonard Cohen began his recording career in 1967, the iconoclastic Canadian troubadour was already well established as a poet and author.

1974's "New Skin For The Old Ceremony" saw Cohen taking a turn away from the spare sound of his earlier releases, with such numbers as "Chelsea Hotel #2", "There Is A War" and "A Singer Must Die" featuring expanded instrumental arrangements and some of the most expressive vocal performances of Cohen's career.

Fear Of Music are Jo Rose (vocals/guitar), Ali Esmaail (bass), Mike Ward (guitar) and Rick Morgan (drums). They formed as schoolfriends, took their name from a seminal Talking Heads album, and together, they're out to give British rock its soul and spirit back, and power up their hometown of Manchester with some rocket-fuel riffs. With the spirit of The Smashing Pumpkins, the screech of Placebo, the scale of (yes) Muse and the conscience of Manic Street Preachers, but also the grace of Jeff Buckley and the hysteria of Pixies, Fear Of Music mine a virgin sound all of their own.

For a Bob Dylan album, and one that many consider to be his best, "Nashville Skyline" doesn't mess around with ambiguity. It's a country album, plain and simple, with Dylan abandoning his fabled talk-sing voice and evangelical message for a soothing, down-home country croon. The new style was a perfect fit for some of Dylan's strongest material ever, including "Lay Lady Lay," "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" and "I Threw It All Away". There's also a superb duet with Johnny Cash on "Girl From The North Country" that, along with the Byrds' earlier "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" LP, officially breaks the champagne bottle over a brand new musical genre: country-rock.

There are only a few living legends working in the field of music today and Bob Dylan is one of them. An original troubadour and singer/songwriter, the voice of a generation, Dylan has been all these things and more.

Led off by the gorgeous "Suzanne," previously a hit for both Judy Collins and Noel Harrison, the album is an exposed nerve, a Fellini-esque parade of losers, victims, and fallen angels. Brittle and unforgiving, tracks like "So Long, Marianne," "Winter Lady," and "Sisters of Mercy" are unflinchingly honest and desolate; the subdued beauty of the songs' spartan backdrop only adds to their force — Cohen takes acoustic folk, for so long a musical expression of empowerment and hope, and bleeds it dry of all its redemptive qualities. A masterpiece of perversity and pain.'

The immense influence of this amazing band is still being recognised today and the fact that the music on "Third" (if not some of the sound quality) is still as fresh and exciting as when it was first recorded is a testament to this. Embracing jazz, pop-ballad, minimalism and the avant-garde as well as their early psychedelic excursions, the Soft Machine were a truly progressive band. Mike Ratledge's organ work, Robert Wyatt's drumming, Hugh Hopper's epic basslines and the virtuosity of Elton Dean's sax finds the band full of marvellous free form playing and dynamic expressionism. As relevant now as they were then, one of the most rewarding bands to discover or rediscover in the new century.

A charming pop song that weaves together the lush beauty of The Beach Boys with the pastoral quirks of The Kinks and the outer limits reached by the Beta Band and Sigur Ros.

In the history of rock music few bands underwent such a stylistic musical transformation as Soft Machine. Starting life as a band that absorbed soul and jazz influences, the group were one of the first to embrace psychedelia before heading off on a jazz influenced tangent. In hindsight Soft Machine's evolution could have only taken place in the musical free thinking environment that was the music business of the late 60s / early 70s. It was an evolution that would produce some of the most startlingly brilliant and innovative music of the period. "Fourth" was another classic but also the point that signalled Soft Machine's move towards jazz. This album found the band in deep jazz-rock territory, and also led to Robert Wyatt leaving after this album.

                                                                                          Vega 4
