Down To The Sea & Back: Volume Tres. The Continuing Journey Of The Balearic Beat - Compiled By Balearic Mike & Kelvin Andrews

After a 10-year hiatus, Balearic Mike and Kelvin Andrews return to continue the journey of the Balearic Beat with another edition of their distinguished Down To The Sea And Back compilation series, presenting a formidable new set of rare and obscure records.

With Vols. 1 and 2, the well loved duo showed us that not only are they serious collectors but chroniclers of a scene, assembling lost gems and unheard marvels into Balearic mythology. Reaping, along the way, accolades such as Piccadilly Records’ Compilation of the Year, and featured on Lauren Laverne’s BBC6 Music show. For Vol. Tres, Mike and Kelvin team up with Copenhagen-based Music For Dreams label – themselves no strangers to the Balearic archives. The compilation features 16 tracks, every selection accompanied by an essential background story in the liner notes of the gatefold vinyl and CD booklet.

As fellow comrade and beloved friend Luke Una puts it: “From Greek acid folk, Balearic bossa, outsider pop and electronic chug, to cosmic machine soul, majestic songs, odd numbers, proto-techno new wave to dubbed out 5am technoid, bass buggin deepness and ethereal outer-space Detroit via San Francisco. This album is a story. A story from the heart, with over three decades digging and grafting in the trenches. In a world of faux, pastiche, counterfeit and aggrorhythm fakes, it oozes a wholesome intuitive authenticity. Majestic songs, odd numbers, cosmic dreaming and late night astral travelling as we all hold on together.”

    By The Sea

    Heaven Knows Magnolia

Wirral band By The Sea return with their third album.

By The Sea come from the lineage of firework pop, bursts of colour and squeeze-your-hand intense love aligned with grey skies & work things.
Recall the first time you heard The Chills’ ‘Pink Frost’ or Television Personalities’ How I Learned To Live The Bomb’?

      That’s the encounter.

Liam Power formed By The Sea in 2011, the band’s debut single Waltz Away coming out on The Great Pop Supplement label that year. In November 2012 the band released their self-titled album through Dell’Orso and GPS. The NME noted how there was “a beautifully bruised element to this Wirral act’s debut from the subdued, morbid production to Liam Power’s heroically battle-weary vocals”.

They have also often been tagged for their kitchen-sink dramas though they’re more akin to something like ‘Wish You Were Here’, both funny and dark without being maudlin. There’s an end of pier melancholy to By The Sea records though, something more than a scribble of sentiment on a souvenir postcard.

For their second LP ‘Endless Days, Crystal Skies the band turned over production duties to their friend Bill Ryder-Jones (formerly of The Coral) and released that bounty of melodic pop in 2014. It’s a partnership they have retained for the new third album ‘Heaven Knows Magnolia’ released on limited purple vinyl, CD and digital formats on October 21st. The song ‘Bedbound Melodies’ is also a co-write with Bill.

The Wirral’s By The Sea release their debut album mixed by their friend Bill Ryder - Jones

"We hope it sounds like a series of failed Springsteen anthems played with too many chorus pedals. That is the theme."

By The Sea make music that can’t contain itself, that is so bursting with joy it sounds like it is tripping over itself in its desire to get out of the speakers. And yet whilst some of these songs sound like anthems, there is a constant introspection that stops them from ever sounding bloated.

There have been comparisons to early Stone Roses, The Go-Betweens and dreampop, but like fellow young Northerners, MONEY, they are pulling on past influences and making them sound like the the most disorientating love affair that ever failed.

This album comes out on Dell’Orso and on vinyl by our friends at Great Pop Supplement. Dream Waters is the current GPS 7” single, and Alone Together will come out as a single in January with a remix of Game Of Circles by label mate, Cian Ciaran (Super Furry Animals)

“By The Sea are a hugely exciting Merseyside based band who are more than successfully crafting that melancholic yet entirely satisfied sensation; the one that feels like you’re semi-drunk on England’s annual baking hot afternoon, even though it’s pissing down with the ferocity of Charlie Brooker outside” - Not Many Experts

      Jacksons Warehouse

      Hotel By The Sea

"Hotel By The Sea" is a worthy introduction to JacksonsWarehouse, with its up tempo guitar driven energy, bouncy rhythm section, naïve yet distinctive and slightly shambolic indie edge, it rattles straight into your consciousness. The self assured vocal coupling draws you deeper into the track where the darker 'black satirical humour' elements of Stuart Brown's lyrics await to unfold an unlikely story. Taking influences from an eclectic mix of bands and artists such as The Doves, Nirvana, The Pixies, Arcade Fire JacksonsWarehouse remain a band whose integrity inspires the composition of far from ordinary songs.
