Tracks II: The Lost Albums

Seven unheard Bruce Springsteen records made between 1983–2018. Featuring 82 previously unreleased songs, 'The Lost Albums' fill in chapters of Springsteen’s expansive career timeline, while offering invaluable insight into his life and work as an artist. “'The Lost Albums' were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released,” said Springsteen. “I’ve played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I’m glad you’ll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them.”

From the lo-fi exploration of LA Garage Sessions ’83, serving as a crucial link between 'Nebraska' and 'Born in the U.S.A'., to the drum loop and synthesizer sounds of 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions', 'The Lost Albums' offer unprecedented context to 35 prolific years of Springsteen’s songwriting and home recording. “The ability to record at home whenever I wanted allowed me to go into a wide variety of different musical directions,” Springsteen explained. Throughout the set, that sonic experimentation takes the form of film soundtrack work (for a movie that was never made) on 'Faithless', country combos with pedal steel on 'Somewhere North of Nashville', richly woven border tales on 'Inyo', orchestra driven, midcentury noir on 'Twilight Hours' and E Street favored rock on 'Perfect World'.

Lost And Found: Selections From The Lost Albums

'Lost And Found: Selections From The Lost Albums' is a curated collection of 20 previously unreleased songs from Springsteen's 'Tracks II: The Lost Albums' box set.

These recordings illuminate key chapters in Springsteen's storied career, offering fans unprecedented insight into his creative process. "The Lost Albums were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released," Springsteen reveals. "I've played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I'm glad you'll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them."

Journey through Springsteen's sonic evolution, from the raw, lo-fi 'LA Garage Sessions '83' that bridges 'Nebraska' and 'Born in the U.S.A'., to the innovative drum loops and synthesizers of 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions'. This collection spans 35 prolific years of Springsteen's songwriting and home recording experiments. "The ability to record at home whenever I wanted allowed me to go into a wide variety of different musical directions," Springsteen explains.

The compilation showcases his versatility across genres: unreleased film soundtrack work from 'Faithless', soulful country arrangements with pedal steel from 'Somewhere North of Nashville', richly textured border tales from 'Inyo', orchestral mid-century noir from 'Twilight Hours', and signature E Street rock from 'Perfect World'.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Now then, 'The Lost Albums' was (is) a lovely but financially prohibitive box set of unheard gems from Springsteen's past, and here we have a 'Best Of' from that banger-encrusted box. It's classic Bruce, massive ballady rock business with country leanings and legendary songwriting credentials, and its not three hundred quid.

Bruce returns blistered and ablaze, with three flame-licked, windswept and deadly dancefloor deities on 12” vinyl, for the second edition of Poorly Knit.

Following on from it’s daft and fisty older brothers on "The Price / Mimicry", the raw power of wind and fire takes over on "Belly / Burned Alive", as we are plunged into devastating sonic worlds, adorned in UK soundsystem badness and Mother Nature’s vengeance.

Providing elemental catastrophe catharsis, through sound exploration, "Belly"’s steppas storm of wailing wind and clattering thunder is backed by "Burned Alive"’s soaring and demented UK garage inferno, to finally subside to the smoldering, dubbed-out vocal remains from "Hot One (Chapped Lips Version)".

With a continued emphasis on the importance of physical medium within dance music, the digitals are an abridged edit of the full release; "Hot One" is vinyl only and only on the vinyl can you hear the full mixes of "Belly" and "Burned Alive". Pressed on eco-friendly Eco-Mix reground PVC and sleeved in DIY lino printed sleeves, each record is a unique shade of marbled storm grey. Cut loud at 45rpm, not only does this sustainable slice of dance floor mayhem come at an attractive price tag, you can rest assured that sound quality has not at all been sacrificed.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: A winner on two fronts - first, it shows that high quality dance twelves can be produced at a reasonable price after all (with a little bit of forward thinking of course); and that Bruce still possesses that awe-inspiring sonic power that's be a constant throughout the innovative producer's catalogue. A triumph of a record!

Letter To You is Bruce Springsteen’s new studio album with the E Street Band, and is a rock album fuelled by the band's heart-stopping, house-rocking signature sound. Recorded at his home studio in New Jersey, Letter To You is Springsteen’s 20th studio album, and is his first album including the E Street Band since 2012’s High Hopes and their first performances together since 2016’s The River Tour.

“I love the emotional nature of Letter To You,” says Springsteen. “And I love the sound of the E Street Band playing completely live in the studio, in a way we’ve never done before, and with no overdubs. We made the album in only five days, and it turned out to be one of the greatest recording experiences I’ve ever had.”

                      Bruce Springsteen

                      Western Stars

Bruce Springsteen’s first new studio album in five years takes his music to a new place, drawing inspiration in part from the Southern California pop records of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The album was recorded primarily at Springsteen’s home studio in New Jersey with additional recording in California and New York. Columbia Records will release Springsteen’s 19th studio album on 14th June.

“This record is a return to my solo recordings featuring character driven songs and sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangements," says Springsteen. "It's a jewel box of a record."

The 13 tracks on ‘Western Stars’ encompass a sweeping range of American themes, of highways and desert spaces, of isolation and community and the permanence of home and hope.

Ron Aniello produced the album with Springsteen and plays bass, keyboard, and other instruments. Patti Scialfa provides vocals and contributes vocal arrangements on four tracks. The musical arrangements include strings, horns, pedal steel and contributions from more than 20 other players including Jon Brion (who plays celeste, Moog and farfisa), as well as guest appearances by David Sancious, Charlie Giordano and Soozie Tyrell. The album was mixed by 13-time Grammy winner Tom Elmhirst.

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There are few artists that can keep doing their thing year after year and smashing it every time. The Boss is clearly one of those people as the most recent outing shows Bruce in fine form, flitting perfectly between the southern country rock and hands-in-the-air balladry we've come to know and love. Classic Bruce.

                        Bruce Springsteen

                        Nebraska

"There is an adage in the record business that a recording artist's demos of new songs often come off better than the more polished versions later worked up in a studio. But Bruce Springsteen was the first person to act on that theory, when he opted to release the demo versions of his latest songs, recorded with only acoustic or electric guitar, harmonica, and vocals, as his sixth album, Nebraska. It was really the content that dictated the approach, however. Nebraska's ten songs marked a departure for Springsteen, even as they took him farther down a road he'd already been traveling. Gradually, his songs became darker and more pessimistic, and those on Nebraska marked a new low. They also found him branching out into better developed stories. The title track was a first-person account of the killing spree of mass murderer Charlie Starkweather. (It can't have been coincidental that the same story was told in director Terrence Malick's 1973 film Badlands, also used as a Springsteen song title.) That song set the tone for a series of portraits of small-time criminals, desperate people, and those who loved them. Just as the recordings were unpolished, the songs themselves didn't seem quite finished; sometimes the same line turned up in two songs. But that only served to unify the album. Within the difficult times, however, there was hope, especially as the album went on. "Open All Night" was a Chuck Berry-style rocker, and the album closed with "Reason to Believe," a song whose hard-luck verses were belied by the chorus -- even if the singer couldn't understand what it was, "people find some reason to believe." Still, Nebraska was one of the most challenging albums ever released by a major star on a major record label." - All Music.

                          Bruce Springsteen

Darkness On The Edge Of Town

Some rank this 1978 album as Bruce Springsteen's very best (well a recent poll in The Telegraph did!) and it does hit really hard: with tunes (every one's a winner) sound (powerful, dense Rock with some skyscraping guitar solos) and ofcourse, with words. Here Bruce's characters are blue collar dreamers, down but defiantly not out. It's like a Raymond Carver short story set to music.  The record was a huge triumph after a court case (musical) enforced a 3 year hiatus which was unheard of in the 70's. This was after his breakthrough album, Born To Run, so maybe a frustrated and even angry Boss poured all of his energy into making this record the beast that is. Anyway, it's an incredible piece of art. A must-have classic rock LP!

                              Bruce Springsteen

                              The River

Who could have predicted that after the dense, brooding, doomy rock of 1978's Darkness On The Edge of Town, The Boss would return two years later with his first US Top 10 hit (Hungry Heart) and a double album so fresh and varied that it paved a clear way forward for a man who  5 years later would be one of the biggest rock stars in the world. This was his poppiest record so far, but in no way corny or cheap: these were hugely uplifting songs, good-time, sunroof-down rock'n'roll with smart stories to tell. But on the other side of the coin were some enormo, tear-jerking classic slowies; simply amazing tracks like Independance Day, Point Blank, Drive All Night, The Price You Pay and ofcourse, the title track itself which has become a world classic. There is an embarrasment of riches on show on this record. No home should be without a copy!

                                Bruce Springsteen

                                Born In The U.S.A.

"Bruce Springsteen had become increasingly downcast as a songwriter during his recording career, and his pessimism bottomed out with Nebraska. But Born in the U.S.A., his popular triumph, which threw off seven Top Ten hits and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, trafficked in much the same struggle, albeit set to galloping rhythms and set off by chiming guitars. That the witless wonders of the Reagan regime attempted to co-opt the title track as an election-year campaign song wasn't so surprising: the verses described the disenfranchisement of a lower-class Vietnam vet, and the chorus was intended to be angry, but it came off as anthemic. Then, too, Springsteen had softened his message with nostalgia and sentimentality, and those are always crowd-pleasers. "Glory Days" may have employed Springsteen's trademark disaffection, yet it came across as a couch potato's drunken lament. But more than anything else, Born in the U.S.A. marked the first time that Springsteen's characters really seemed to relish the fight and to have something to fight for. They were not defeated ("No Surrender"), and they had friendship ("Bobby Jean") and family ("My Hometown") to defend. The restless hero of "Dancing in the Dark" even pledged himself in the face of futility, and for Springsteen, that was a step. The "romantic young boys" of his first two albums, chastened by "the working life" encountered on his third, fourth, and fifth albums and having faced the despair of his sixth, were still alive on this, his seventh, with their sense of humor and their determination intact. Born in the U.S.A. was their apotheosis, the place where they renewed their commitment and where Springsteen remembered that he was a rock & roll star, which is how a vastly increased public was happy to treat him." - All Music.

"High Hopes'' finds Bruce Springsteen in a number of different musical settings, and includes the E Street Band members in various large and small combinations as well as guitarist Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) on eight tracks. Besides Morello, the album also includes appearances on several songs by Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008, on what Springsteen calls "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade." The album was recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City and marks Springsteen's 18th studio album. As Bruce writes in the albums liner notes, "I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording."
