The Fall

Medicine For The Masses - The Rough Trade Singles

This box set showcases the four classic 7” singles that The Fall released on the Rough Trade label in the early 1980s, all of which characterised their abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound, tense bass and drum rhythms and Smith's caustic lyrics. This beautifully packaged box set contains coloured vinyl re-mastered versions of all four Rough Trade 7” singles plus a set of 4 button badges each featuring a key element from the front cover of the four single sleeves.

These New Puritans, the great heretics of British music, return with Into The Fire, their first new studio recording since 2013’s critically acclaimed album Field of Reeds.

To work on the follow-up to Field Of Reeds, Jack Barnett moved to Berlin, not in a 'trust fund edgelord in a black coat outside Berghain' sort of way, but purely because he could afford to get studio space in a large old Communist-era radio studio. "I'm not really in Berlin because I love the mystique of [the city] or anything like that, so the whole miserable winter thing doesn't really hold anything for me," he told me a few years ago. "It could be anywhere, I'm the sort of person where my environment doesn't have a massive effect on what I do, I don't think it would change the music particularly." There, he forged forward as part of a two-member core operation with twin brother George (Thomas Hein has departed to take a PhD in neuroscience). Additional contributions came from long-time collaborators Graham Sutton and conductor Andre De Ridder, yet even with this palette, this is not, by any stretch of the imagination, Field Of Reeds II. How could it be? That's not to say this is a comedown. It's a consolidation, yes, but rather than tread water These New Puritans continue to explore and augment their own landscape.

The Into The Fire artwork is a collaboration between George Barnett and the award winning photographer and director Harley Weir.

    Echo & The Bunnymen

The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon

Bunnymen Classics Transformed & New Songs With Strings & Things Attached.

‘I’m not doing this for anyone else. I’m doing it as it’s important to me to make the songs better. I have to do it.’ Ian McCulloch

This new studio album sees The Bunnymen, still lead by the indominable Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant, revisit some of their greatest songs to rearrange and transform them with co producer Andy Wright…and strings and things. Also included is two brand new tracks to accompany the classics.

Echo & the Bunnymen's dark, swirling fusion of post-punk and The Doors/The Velvets-inspired pop psychedelia has brought the group twenty top 20 hits and nine top 20 albums in the UK so far in their 40 year career. The band have come a long way from the group's infamous first concert as a three-piece with a drum machine in 1979 at the legendary Erics club in Liverpool, The Bunnymen still perform sell-out concerts across the world today.

Their seminal albums 'Crocodiles', 'Heaven Up Here', 'Porcupine' and 'Ocean Rain' have been a major influence for acts such as Coldplay, The Killers and The Flaming Lips whilst later albums 'Evergreen' and 'What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?' and 'Siberia & Meteorites' demonstrate what an amazing body of work the band have.

The Bunnymen are still revered by those in the best of popular culture. In the past year alone, the highly acclaimed and culturally phenomenal Netflix series 'Stranger Things' has used the song 'Nocturnal Me' whilst the equally comparable '13 Reasons Why' has used 'The Killing Moon', a song also used on another Netflix show, 'Dead of Summer'.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Morrissey's new album is brimming with the sort of melancholy jangles and clever chord structures of yesteryear, but coupled with wry and ardent policism, a bit of conga and some flamenco stuff too. Lots of sounds, all worked into songs.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: Nick Cave has been one of the most influential and distinctive songwriter / performers of the last 30 odd years. With such a brilliant and varied catalogue spanning 15 LPs, I'd find it virtually impossible to select a mere 21 'best of' tracks, but Nick and ex Bad Seed Mick Harvey have managed it, and that's what you get here on the vinyl and standard CD editions of this release. The deluxe expands futher and is spread across 3CDs and a live/interview DVD.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: I was a little young for Blondie, having been born 5 years after Parallel Lines was out, but had I not been, i'd be regaling you with tales of how I had posters of Debbie Harry in my bedroom, but I didn't. I had posters of Yoshi. Still, this is very good.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: "Fuzzy Logic" was originally released in 1996, and introduced us to the warped, synth-psych-pop world of the Super Furries. You're plunged straight in from the opening riffs of "God! Show Me Magic", which sets things off at a manic pace, before swooping down into "Fuzzy Birds", then back up again for the hook-filled "Something 4 The Weekend". And so it goes on, vying between manic knob twiddling wig-outs to more pastoral, psych-pop all with an innate sense of melody and fun. They managed to take elements of 60s psych, 70s glam and a punk rock attitude and meld them into something unlike anything else around at the time. It was a real breath of fresh air when it came out in '96 and still sounds great 20 years on!

The distinct sound and integrity of Kasabian's fifth studio album defines the very essence of the band, their trademark sound distilled and re-packaged into one incredibly exciting, unique statement of intent. ’48:13’ is driven by the continuous evolution and musical experimentation of the band through their previous 4 albums, spanning a career which celebrates its 10th year with the release of this, their 5th album.

From the suburbs of Croydon to the industrial bloc of former East Berlin, The Tunics have been quietly making a name for themselves as well as an album.

Their sound is a mix of influences; The Libertines, Cast and Oasis. The album is a melody-heavy, heart-on-the-sleeve affair, reminiscent of the greats from the Britpop era, when guitar bands were ruling the charts. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in the songs that we’re writing and the album that we have,” says frontman Joe. “Not to be too overblown about the whole thing but we’re ready for a proper f**king guitar band with actual songs. I think that’s what the world needs.”

The album opens with the dance-like-you’re-a-teenager-again track entitled "Berlin" - an ode to the city of their rebirth. "Help Is On It’s Way" is next up. Bass heavy, it drives the song forward like speeding traffic, barrelling up the westway. Third up "I’m Broke You’re Bored" will be the second single release from the album: A poignant sentiment with the gently spiralling guitar and keyboards of Costello and Booth providing the soundtrack to it. "Stolen Hearts" is the ballad of the album and a stand-out track complete with slide guitars that shine a western infused sunset light on the song. Next up is "Radio", a beautiful string-laden piece of music that comes with one of the band’s sharpest-tongued lyrics. “I think the song is about everything on the radio being rubbish basically and just saying I can’t bear this any longer, I need an outlet for myself.” Debut single "Low" has a killer hook with layers of piano and guitar sounds. A soft interlude marks the half way point of the album and leads into the second half of the record: "Slaves Ride On These Waves" is again haunted by a western air. The gently plucked guitar and folky balladry places it firmly in the desert, a lost Morricone. "You Already Knew" picks up the tempo and from here on in the album is hitting the backbeat hard. "Shadows" is a jaunty and upbeat psychedelic groover with a political stab. "Wit and Acid Tongue", largely instrumental skiffles by with an undeniable and sometimes abstract sixties’ vibe. "A Moment of Clarity" is the penultimate track on Dabblers Handbook and is a moment in time, an expansive breath and a gently rocking precursor to album closer "Dear God", an epic and beautifully composed prayer of a track. The anthemic strings wrap the closing number into a gift of a finale.
