Citizen

Halcyon Blues

Citizen’s persistent sonic evolution and refusal to make the same record twice has earned them a reputation as one of the most consistently captivating bands in modern rock music. It’s precisely this commitment to their craft that has led to their new album, 'Halcyon Blues'. It’s a dynamic and confident culmination of all that’s come before, making it crystal clear that for all their sonic restlessness, Citizen have always known exactly who they are.

From the start, the band–vocalist Mat Kerekes, guitarist Nick Hamm, bassist Eric Hamm, along with newer members guitarist Mason Mercer and drummer Ben Russin–were steadfastly determined to follow their creativity wherever it led. Over the years they deftly moved through raw emo, menacing post-hardcore, anthemic alternative, garage-y indie pop, and so much more. Now Halcyon Blues brings elements from throughout their entire catalog together into a singular and instantly satisfying record that just sounds like Citizen. Where past Citizen albums have felt like direct responses to the preceding release, 'Halcyon Blues' sounds like the group wrapping their arms around their entire catalog and carrying it forward. Recorded by Kerekes in his home studio in Toledo, then mixed by Tom Lorde-Alge (U2, Weezer, Blink182), the record taps into the urgency and ferocity of Citizen’s early albums while embracing the epic scope and undeniable hooks of their more recent work. These are huge rock songs with fittingly huge emotions, but the youthful frustration of Citizen’s early work has grown up too, replaced by a more nuanced, though no less cutting, adult perspective.

The Bevis Frond

The Clocks - 2026 Reissue

‘The Clocks' was originally issued in 2007 as a CD-only limited edition of 110 for members of 'The Bevis Frond Online Community'. It comprised 19 previously unissued tracks. Most of these were home demos featuring just Frond frontman Nick Saloman on all instruments and vocals. Since then, it has never been re-issued in any format. It is therefore with great pleasure that Blue Matter are re-issuing it for the first time, and now as a vinyl double album and limited CD. Due to certain circumstances, three of the original tracks could not be used, so these have been replaced these with another three previously unheard tracks from Nick Saloman's extensive archives. These songs include the seven minute 'She's Taken It All', originally intended for 2004's 'Hit Squad' album but dropped at the last minute due to timing constraints. The beautiful 'You Better Make Do' and the edgy 'Devil Doll' have also been added. We are delighted to be able to make this 'long lost' album available once again and think it will be a welcome addition to the Bevis Frond canon.

The Waterboys

Atlantic Rain: The Lost Fisherman's Blues Recordings

'Fisherman's Blues' album sessions have been revisited for a brand new 3CD and 3LP Vinyl box set featuring previously unreleased recordings.

Almost 400 multi-track tape reels, totalling 150 hours of music, were recorded during the Waterboys' famous 'Fisherman's Blues' sessions of 1986-88. Among these were 80 tapes with no song titles, just rough notes like "jam" or "unknown." In 2024 band leader Mike Scott went through most of these, listening to them for the first time since they were recorded, and discovering in the process dozens of tracks the band had forgotten about; lost recordings, some improvised on the spot, others painstakingly worked on, that in many cases equal the quality of those on the original classic 1988 album. Scott has compiled these into a triple CD and vinyl collection titled 'THE LOST FISHERMAN'S BLUES RECORDINGS'.

Left-field Brooklyn soulful lounge from Numero’s Private Mind Garden. Seven lo-fi gospel meditations that bridge the gap between Shuggie Otis and Otis G . Johnson. Blue

'Blue' is an uplifting, vibrant track that captures a sense of personal return. Upbeat yet reflective, the song carries the feeling of triumph, not in grand gestures, but in the quiet understanding that the most meaningful victories are often the ones experienced within. With its warm arrangement, memorable hook, and cinematic sense of movement, 'Blue' encapsulates the spirit of an artist reconnecting with instinct, melody, and purpose.

Nurse With Wound

Huffin' Rag Blues - 2026 Reissue

Here’s an expanded edition of one of Nurse With Wound’s most intense, unique opuses, so unique that for long-time fans it was a strange, chaotic loundge bizzarie when it first came out. For the first time, all four audio sides are complete (originally, there were only three sides). And to crown it all, a magnificent new cover by the great and talented Babs Santini, who is none other than Steven Stapleton behind his pseudonym of plastic artist, still in the luxurious tradition of the “silver collection” at Rotorelief Records.

Nurse with Wound’s album Huffin’ Rag Blues is unique in NWW’s discography. Stapleton teams up with composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Liles, his co-creator of musical terrorism, to tackle the exotica and lounge genres, crushed into a cacophonous mess. Long-time NWW friends Colin Potter and Matt Waldron are also on board. Blues, jazz, crime films, bachelor pads and soap opera music are processed and discarded, then chopped up and recycled in a mix that contains a ton of space, but also overflows with dynamic tension, hilarious asides, sexually suggestive poetry and a certain rock & roll abandon. This is a very surprising opus for long-time fans, is like a soundtrack that could illustrate a David Lynch film It’s brilliant, maddening, hilarious and sinister enough to earn a place in any collection with a little quirkiness and eccentricity. Huffin’ Rag Blues incorporates more familiar musical elements – including instruments (played live, even), rhythm and vocals – than almost any other Nurse With Wound album to date. The album’s main concern is, as always, to create environments for lucid dreaming rather than to create music as such.

HearThuG / Light Blue File / Briki / Ahmet Mecnun

Transmission Signals

Are You Alien's first vinyl missive, a compilation style affair showcasing the work of four label affiliated artists, is genuinely packed to the rafters with cuts designed to be played loud on "deep dancefloors and late-night transmissions". HearThuG kicks things off with 'Relax', a post-punk/dark disco inspired slab of early morning hedonism inspired by DFX's 'Relax Your Body' (which itself borrowed heavily from the KLF's 'What Time Is Love'), before Light Blue File charges towards darkened warehouses on the tactile tech-house/stab-happy rave fusion of 'Guante El En Mic'. Over on side B, Briki opts for squelchy acid bass, trippy vocal snippets and spacey sounds on 'Droppin The Pressure', before Ahmet Mecnun adds spoken word vocals and French Touch flourishes to a deep tech-house groove.

Slope114 are Dmitri SFC & Elise Gargalikis, a duo that makes their house music live from home in San Francisco. That lends it a rare musicality and melodic lushness that sit their work right up there with the deep house forefathers. This outing starts with the slouchy goodness and endearing bass of 'Dystopian Blues', complete with aloof vocals that exude cool. The dub is even more pillow and smooth than the Mark Ambrose mix that brings a little more roughness to the drums but still locks into a hypnotic vibe. 'Emu 2' is a gentle rhythm with dusty pads and candle-lit chords for when slow-burn subtlety is prized over immediacy. Classy stuff.

Ed O'Brien

Blue Morpho

Ed O'Brien, the acclaimed guitarist and singer-songwriter known for his role in Radiohead, announces 'Blue Morpho', his absorbing, second solo album and first under his own name.

Named for the iridescent butterfly, 'Blue Morpho' was written during lockdown and recorded at The Church Studio, London and Seven Sound in Wales. The tranquil Welsh countryside proved inspirational, capturing a sense of reflection, healing, and acceptance. Musically the album blends a collage of hypnotic psych-folk, jazz, triphop, radiant guitars and rhythm sections. Blue Morpho marks a fresh and deeply personal chapter in O'Brien's musical journey.

Produced by Paul Epworth (Adele, Coldplay), with additional production from Riley MacIntyre (Ezra Collective), and mixed by Ben Baptie (Sault, Little Simz). The album features an array of musicians, such as Shabaka Hutchings (flute), Dave Okumu (guitars, bass), Philip Selway (drums), and The Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

Robert Johnson

King Of The Delta Blues Singers, Volume II - 2026 Reissue

Robert Johnson was an American blues musician whose recordings heavily influenced many, many future generations of artists. Despite the fact his recording career spanned a mere seven months, he is universally recognized as a master of the Delta blues style, one of the earliest-known styles of blues emerging from the Mississippi delta in the early twentieth century. This second compilation, originally released in 1970, collects sixteen recordings previously available on the 78rpm format and includes recordings of two Johnson songs that have since become blues standards: "Sweet Home Chicago" and "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom." In contrast to the deeply emotive songs released on the 1961 album, many of the tracks on this volume display Johnson's lighter side. In 2003 the record was ranked #424 on Rolling Stone's list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Whether he really needed to sell his soul to the devil at the crossroads to reach these great heights, we'll never know..

The Bluebells

This Is The Bluebells

'This Is The Bluebells' was recorded live and co-produced at Beetroot Studios in Airdrie with producer Stuart MacLeod and then mastered by Paul McGeechan - The album is released by Last Night From Glasgow (Peter Capaldi, Pearl Charles, Sister John) with the vinyl editions of this special LP expertly manufactured at Seabass Vinyl in Tranent - making this album 100% Made In Scotland! For the first time the album features songs written collaboratively by all members of the current Bluebells line up

Campbell Owens, Douglas MacIntyre and Mick Slaven worked on the album alongside founding members Robert 'Bobby Bluebell' Hodgens, David McCluskey and Ken McCluskey to create the new collection of tracks. The result is a stunning body of work; rich, melodic, thoughtful and infectious.

The Bluebells rose to fame in the 1980s as jangle-pop pioneers of the Sound of Young Scotland era with their three hits 'Young at Heart', 'Cath' and 'I'm Falling'. Despite only releasing one readily-available album during their initial run (Sisters, 1984) the band have remained as one of Scotland's most beloved bands, currently boasting over 144,000 monthly Spotify listeners. The band enjoyed a post-breakup revival in 1993 after a Volkswagen advert featured 'Young at Heart', pushing the single to No.1 for 4 weeks. They have since reunited over the years, to play various festival slots and develop new material. In 2023, the band released The Bluebells In The 21st Century, their first LP in decades. In 2025, The Bluebells played Glastonbury.

Camera Obscura

Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi - 25th Anniversary Edition

On May 8, 2026, Camera Obscura celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut album, 'Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi'. Out-of-print on the format since its initial UK release on Andmoresound in 2001, the 25th anniversary edition is the most definitive version of of 'Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi' ever pressed to vinyl, featuring both 'Eighties Fan' B-sides — 'Shine Like a New Pin' and 'Let’s Go Bowling' — which were later added to expanded CD reissues of the album.

'Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi' first reached Stateside in 2004, after the success of Camera Obscura’s 2003 Merge debut 'Underachievers Please Try Harder'. New fans who weren’t keyed in to the UK import market or to what John Peel was spinning on his BBC Radio programs would be forgiven for mistaking 'Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi' as a follow-up to their breakthrough album as opposed to their first. The album is a remarkably-assured opening statement, a fully realized expression of a sound that has enthralled listeners from their first spin of the Stuart Murdoch (Belle & Sebastian) produced 'Eighties Fan' to their last listen of the band’s 2024 return to the studio 'Look to the East, Look to the West'.

Those fans have clamored for 'Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi' to receive the vinyl reissue it has long deserved. Setting the needle down on tracks like 'Swimming Pool', 'Pen and Notebook', and 'Happy New Year', it’s easy to hear why: each of the album’s 12 songs are perfectly-observed slices of life rendered cinematic through opulently-detailed arrangements. It’s eternal, bedrock pop music as only Camera Obscura could make it, suitable for the hi-fis of 1966 and 2026 alike.

Buddy Guy

Blues Singer - 2026 Reissue

"Blues Singer" is all acoustic and dedicated to John Lee Hooker with the line, "In Memory of John Lee Hooker. You are missed." Not known for his acoustic work, Buddy Guy unplugs for a rare album-length excursion into folk blues. The guitarist gets down and dirty with 12 tracks that sound like they were recorded after hours in his living room or on his back porch. Guy’s stinging leads are still evident as is his emotive voice, but both are less flamboyant in the unplugged setting. Accompanied by spare stand-up bass and brushed drums, Guy sounds nearly supernatural on covers from Skip James ("Hard Time Killing Floor"), Johnny Shines ("Moanin’ and Groanin’"), Son House ("Louise McGhee"), and John Lee Hooker ("Sally Mae") among others. It’s a low-key, low-down affair made for late nights, rainy days, and the saddest of moods. Buddy Guy is just as convincing here, arguably more so, as on his barnstorming electric albums, making Blues Singer one of the bravest and most poignant albums in his catalogue.

Taj Mahal & The Phantom Blues Band

Time

When five-time Grammy award winner Taj Mahal intersects with The Phantom Blues Band, it’s one of those rare joints that hits you before you even know you’ve been hit. They walk in, plug in, and the whole room shifts. Studio assassins, road lifers, groove keepers and somehow still hungry. They are an internationally renowned Two-Time Grammy Award winning group.

Taj Mahal’s fearless, open-hearted spirit still shadows the whole thing with that genre-hopping joy. He leads you down the road with a history lesson and the Phantoms carry it with honor to the Griot. Mahal sings and plays harp as he fronts an all-star lineup of legendary musicians with the three ringleaders for the Phantoms--Johnny Lee Schell, the soulful gunslinger with tone for days, Tony Braunagel keeps the whole ship steered straight and on time, every time, and Larry Fulcher, the anchor, the heartbeat, the quiet storm on bass. Additionally, Jon Cleary, with that unmistakable New Orleans piano swagger, Mick Weaver, a session master who’s playing slides in with an undeniable velvet magic, and in the horn section, Joe Sublett on sax and Les Lovitt on trumpet bring the orchestration into the full view of this genre.

This band doesn’t ‘back” anybody. They lift you up, carry you, and dare you to rise higher. On this record they slide through blues, soul, R&B, and island color with the ease of men who’ve lived every bit of it. This is deep-groove, grown-folks music from a band that still plays like the night is young.

‘Time’ is their new release on Resonatin’ Records / Thirty Tigers and celebrates over thirty years of making this uplifting inspiring and aspiring music together.

Big Outdoor Type

Blue Eyed Boy '80-'84

The name of Neil Davidge is more familiar for his seminal work with Massive Attack, the link with the dance grooves and adjustments of DNA and for film and TV music credits. By contrast the first half of the 1980's Bristol band Big Outdoor Type was an earlier pop-tinged project with a planet of rhythm thrown in.

Neil and his writing partner, vocalist Tracey Fuller, had managed to come up with something a little more sophisticated than much of the local fare usually on offer. Music journalist Dave Massey picked up on the band and reviewed them to a national readership for Sounds. After that, well nothing much happened. Fast forward some four decades and Massey was able to compile the 'Blue Eyed Boy' album for Bristol Archive Records, saying:
'I was hearing terrific tracks I'd not come across before. The overall quality was so high it was too good not to see the light of day. These tracks, along with a whole mass of home, four-track and Bristol demo studio produced works, have come together in a rather wonderful collection that was a delight to compile.'

Opening track 'Don't be a Stranger' is a beautiful blast of summery warmth. The next tracks are a blissful cross between Swing Out Sister's 'Breakout' and the woozy sway of Associates in 'Sulk' mode on 'Winters Cold', the jive swing of 'The Spell', while the haunting 'Incredible Shrinking Girl' and the later 'Follow Love' are songs that echo the classic Postcard era of Sound of Young Scotland with some southern sweetening. The more jangly angles of 'City of Hell' and spacious, sub psychedelic Latin lusciousness of 'Our Last Man in Brazil' take that process several dance steps further. There is also a hint of the filmic element that would later inform Neil Davidge's future career.

This album collection was for so long a lost possible classic that never was. That's not the case any longer. Dive right in, breathe the refreshing air, enjoy the view and feel the benefit of the great outdoors.

Following the critical success of last year’s ‘Cold Feet’ LP, producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Alek Lee returns to Isle of Jura with his most introspective work to date, the ‘Blue Bird’ album. Across eight tracks, the Athens-based artist explores what he describes as a "Peculiar state of minds & Dub Orientated Feelings," blending his signature guerrilla style production with deep, organic soul.

The album’s centerpiece and title track, ‘Blue Bird’ features the haunting vocals of singer-songwriter Keren Ilan. It is a raw, heartfelt exploration of the aftermath of a breakup. The lyrics speak of a "desert heart" and a "loss that grows tall and loud," eventually finding a path toward healing as the "blue bird sings the dawn." Musically, the track is anchored by hazy, sun drenched guitars, a central instrument that weaves a consistent Balearic thread throughout the LP.

The journey through ‘Blue Bird’ is one of shifting shadows and unexpected textures. ‘Treasures’ is a standout instrumental, leaning into a grit-flecked, bluesy "twang" reminiscent of Duane Eddy, while ‘The Beach Road’ sees long time collaborator and ‘Shame On Us’ bandmate, Yovav, lending his magical bass and guitar work to a track that feels like a slow drive toward the horizon.

Side B shifts the energy toward the dancefloor and the sophisticated leftfield pop of the 80s. ‘First Rain’ is a subtle house leaning gem underpinned by a kick drum and lush, synth heavy emotive chord progression. ‘Thanks to Sade’ is a seductive downtempo groove with epic guitar lines shifting through, while ‘Remember the Good’ brings a subtle reggae skank and a French-influenced organ sound into the mix. The LP comes full circle with a smoked out Dub version of the title track ‘Blue Bird’.

A 180 gram pressing in a 3mm spine full colour sleeve and sticker designed by Bradley Pinkerton.

recorded live in paris on april 22, 1971, the performance captures cherry at his creative zenith, alongside south african bassist johnny dyani and turkish percussionist okay temiz. the trio moves like a living organism - fluid, spontaneous, and deeply spiritual. the opening piece, blue lake, finds cherry on flute, channeling native american inflections that blend seamlessly with far-eastern tonalities. the following two extended compositions - each stretching past the twenty-five-minute mark - are sprawling journeys of rhythm and resonance, rich with cross-cultural dialogue and ecstatic improvisation.
this deluxe reissue comes housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve and features new, in-depth liner notes by acclaimed jazz writer kevin le gendre, offering fresh insight into cherry’s universal musical philosophy.
a lost masterpiece, reborn for record store day 2026
don cherry’s blue lake: the sound of freedom without frontiers.

On March 30th we gave the first performance of The Great Western Road Trip at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.

As if opening night anxiety was not enough, we were also playing nine new songs for the very first time with the added fear factor of a request by BBC Scotland to record the concert. Somehow all of these factors combined to focus us into playing, what we now realise, was one of our best performances there or anywhere for some time.

There was one unknown factor. That night was to be the last time we would play in Scotland with our friend and brother James Miller Prime. So, this is a very special recording of six close friends and musicians making music, unaware they were on their last ever run of shows together. We hope the excitement we felt at creating the show comes over and you enjoy this unique recording of very special Edinburgh night.

Dedicated to James Miller Prime
(3 November 1960 – 19 June 2025)

Includes 25 career spanning greatest hits and nine tracks from 2025's Top 3 album The Great Western Road.

This blue smoke triple vinyl set is housed in a trifold sleeve with poster.

Hedvig Mollestad Weejuns

Bitches Blues

Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen – guitar. Ståle Storløkken – organ and synth. Ole Mofjell – drums. “Weejuns is all about interplay,” explains Mollestad, a former Young Jazz Talent of the Year and Artist in Residence in her native Norway. “Bitches Blues consists of six instrumental tracks, or stretches of music, with an extreme range of dynamics. Some are based around hefty beats, while other tracks are far more lyrical and rubato. It ranges from riff-based rock-ish stuff, to loud chaos, to melancholy ballads and even totally free improvisations.” Taking a cultured yet refreshingly instinctive approach to intertwining instruments and influences, Bitches Blues (a wry play on Miles Davis album Bitches Brew) veers unpredictably from slow and soft, distinctly sectioned songs with disciplined chord progressions to explosive eruptions of cathartic and complex structures. Weejuns (a slang abbreviation of “Norwegians”) introduced themselves in 2023 with a self-titled double live album. Originally assembled by Mollestad for the Kongsberg Jazz Festival, where she’d been awarded the prestigious Musicians Prize, Weejuns’ collective chemistry has proven enduring and alluring, in part as a foil to the Hedvig Mollestad Trio’s heaviest album to date, 2025’s Bees in the Bonnet. A graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music, Mollestad has released eight acclaimed albums with her eponymous Trio, toured across Europe and North America, and performed with the likes of Nels Cline, Colin Stetson, Ingrid Laubrock, Trevor Dunn, and Shahzad Ismaily. The signature of her 15-year career has been fusing serious chops with an overt focus on finding fun in sound. For years, Mollestad obsessed over music and little else. The daughter of a jazz musician, she lost herself in his record collection, studying classic works by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Joe Pass and Jim Hall before discovering riff-raging titans like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Mahavishnu Orchestra in her 20s. This led to the formation of Hedvig Mollestad Trio, whose relentless recording and touring schedule since the early ’10s have earned the guitarist a stream of accolades, including two Norwegian Grammys (Spellemannprisen) and DownBeat magazine naming her one of the 25 artists who “could shape jazz for decades” in November of 2020. Ståle Storløkken is a founder and long serving member of Supersilent and Elephant9, has served as Terje Rypdal´s “right hand” since the mid 90s, and collaborated with Motorpsycho on record and on stage... as well as countless others. Ole Mofjell is the youngest member, active with Krokofant, Signe Emmeluth’s Amoeba and his own free jazz trio 3 Days Of Maceration.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: It doesn't get much more avant jazz than this, Mollestad is well known in jazz circles for her deep understanding of rhythm and texture, and here leads the Weejuns into an endlessly developing suite of intricate percussion loops and roaring distorted guitar, all as a sort of tribute to one of the most well known avant jazz LP's of all time.

Nick Schofield

Blue Hour

'Blue Hour' is Nick Schofield’s first foray into ambient jazz music. The album is an ambient ode to Miles Davis’ 'In A Silent Way', and opens up Schofield’s sonic palette to introduce his childhood instrument, drums, with his contemporary ambient-electronic practice. 'Blue Hour' features the intuitive, and totally improvised, trumpet playing of Scott Bevins (No Cosmos, Busty and the Bass). Schofield grew up playing drums, but turned to creating experimental-electronic music when studying Electroacoustics at Concordia University. Well-known for his signature ambient aesthetic, Schofield has been called a “dazzling electronic artist” by Aquarium Drunkard and a “synth maven” by Constellation Records. 'Blue Hour' marks the first time that he has merged his percussion practice with his ambient electronic explorations, and it is all in the service of reinterpreting Miles Davis’ 1969 watershed recording 'In a Silent Way'. Schofield improvised all of the drumming and main synthesizer parts over the course of a single day, recording in a church in Ottawa. These foundational layers comprise tender Moog pulses and Roland Juno-6 pads, some of which would not be out of place on the back half of 'Another Green World' or 'Music Has the Right to Children'. If this was to be a reflection of 'In a Silent Way', of course there would need to be trumpet. Schofield invited Bevins to record the missing piece of the album during a one day recording session, where Bevins improvised all his trumpet parts having never heard the songs before. Scott Bevins’ contribution gives the music a leading instrumental voice, and his intuitive approach shows a perfect understanding of how to both integrate and elevate the compositions. 'Blue Hour' is itself a profound reference, an ambient adaptation, a dream realized and an uncanny synthesis of sounds, styles, and personal history.

St. Germain

Rose Rouge (Saag Remixes)

Killer tweaks of the seminal, era-defining jazzy house track: "Rose Rouge" by St. Germain. Gifted the stems, GAMM's Saag keeps much of the OG flavour intact as he rolls out two slightly different but equally devastating remixes; one with a 'house perspective', and the other through a 'jazz perspective'. The results speak for themselves, with the house version injecting the mother of all breakdowns int othe simmering energy of the original; whilst the jazz lens brings more of the broiling, psychedelic nature of the track into focus through some skilled delays and other sfx elements. Stupendously hot!

Puma Blue

Croak Dream

With his new record Croak Dream, Puma Blue (real name Jacob Allen) returns to the spectral intimacy that first won him a cult following, now reimagined with the raw, instinctive energy of his live band. The album fuses lo-fi jazz balladry with jungle breaks, krautrock textures and trip-hop atmosphere, drawing comparisons to Portishead, Jeff Buckley, and D’Angelo.

Written in solitude and brought to life in collaboration, Croak Dream was conjured from tape loop sessions at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, co-produced and engineered by Sam Petts-Davies (The Smile, Frank Ocean) where the band improvised to fragments of Allen’s songs they’d never fully heard. The result is a dreamlike collage of baritone sax-drenched ballads and restless grooves: tender, feverish, and alive.

This record marks a daring evolution for Puma Blue, balancing bold sonic experimentation with raw emotional clarity, tailor-made for the stage.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A wonderfully off-piste collection of gloomy missives and crackling unease, haunting vocals and woozy delay lines held together by Allen's perfectly imperfect vocals and impeccably rendered atmospheres. There aren't many RIYL's that would fit here, but there are certainly similarities to be drawn to Radiohead without stretching too much.

Pale Blue Eyes

PBE Archives Vol. 1

Spanning recordings from 2018 to 2025, 'Archive Vol. 1' is a curated collection of outtakes, alternate versions, and previously unreleased tracks that didn’t find a home on the band’s three studio albums. The band describes the project as “an album that came together almost by accident,” born from revisiting forgotten demos and half-finished ideas that, when assembled, revealed a cohesive and emotionally resonant body of work.

The album features 18 tracks, including fan-favourite live staples and experimental interludes.

With its blend of shoegaze textures, new wave energy, and introspective songwriting, 'Archive Vol. 1' offers a unique glimpse into the creative process behind Pale Blue Eyes’ evolving sound.

Hiver completes a trilogy of EPs on Gudu with ‘Blue Hell’, another transmission of space-age machine funk from a duo who are truly shaping their own soundworld.

If you’ve followed Hiver, you should know the deal by now: they’ve spent the last decade honing a sound that draws heavily from dance music history – namely the starry-eyed synthesizer funk of classic techno and electro – that drips in colour and emotion without ever feeling retrograde. ‘Blue Hell’ is their third EP for Gudu, and maybe their most accomplished yet.

In Hiver’s words, “this EP was shaped by a mix of late night club energy and the more introspective, melodic ideas we’ve been exploring in the past years. A big part of it also comes from the tension between how people connect today. This constant, hyper-connected flow of networks, media, and online exchanges and our own way of creating music, which is very physical and personal. We’re always bouncing ideas through messages and files, but the real magic still happens when we meet in the studio, face to face. That contrast between digital connection and human presence became a sort of hidden theme behind the EP.”

“With Blue Hell, our third chapter on Gudu, we wanted to capture a moment of clarity, something direct yet still drifting. In a way, this release completes the excursion we began with the first two records: three points that trace the contours of the sounds we’re drawn to. Each track feels like a fragment of that journey, grounded in rhythm but always leaning toward depth and escape.”

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Future-proof technoid chuggers for fans of Peach Discs, Roza Terenzi, Altered Circuits etc. With just the cheekiest smattering of acid techno contained within, these proggy acid burners are set to light up the club.

The Groundhogs

Blues Obituary - 2025 Repress

The second studio album from The Groundhogs, now slimmed to the classic three piece line up of Tony TS McPhee on guitar, Pete Cruikshank on bass and Ken Pestelnik on drums. The beginning of their domination as the hardest working band on the circuit, a testament to their creativity as they re-tooled the blues into a neo-psyche groove. Breaking from their traditional influences, the first stepping stone for the power trio who would blossom with ‘Thank Christ For the Bomb’, ‘Split’ and ‘Who Will Save The World?’. Inspired by a Yardbirds’ freak out, hearing authentic Indian drumming and the magic that existed between this legendary trio, ‘Blues Obituary’ is a juggernaut of riffs. According to Tony in Zig Zag’s John Tobler’s sleeve notes to the 1987 re-issue of ‘Blues Obituary’ it was the BBC’s John Peel producer John Walters that forced the band’s hand. “He decided he hated the blues,” McPhee told Tobler, “We figured it was time to get away from it.” “A deep excursion into musical depths further down than Canned Heat ever dared go.” The re-issue also includes a mono-friendly single cut of ‘BDD’ plus its original B-side ‘Gasoline’, an aching solo Tony TS McPhee track.

Supersuckers

Liquor, Women, Drugs & Killing

At this point in their illustrious, nearly 40-year career, Supersuckers have nothing to prove to anyone. Formed in 1988 and led by charismatic singer / bassist Eddie Spaghetti, Supersuckers caught with a crowd that appreciated the group’s license to shred within the confines of killer punk rock songs, along with lyrics that didn’t take things so seriously. On ‘Liquor, Women, Drugs & Killing’, the lyrics are sharp, yet dark and biting -the trademark of any Supersuckers album. Sonically, it is more upbeat than its cynical lyrics.

For ‘Liquor, Women, Drugs & Killing’, Supersuckers joined forces with old friend Billy Joe Bowers, who produced the album in Atlanta. Spaghetti and Bowers were in a band in Tucson in the 1980s, and Supersuckers actually recorded with the producer in 2007; however, that session was discarded due to band clashes. Even so, Spaghetti and Bowers remained close and in touch, so teaming up again felt natural. “Being produced again was new and helped the record a lot,” Spaghetti says of the sessions. “He was able to tap into something that we didn’t see, and the record is extra special because of that.”

As Supersuckers gear up for another round of touring, this album has given something the band hasn’t had in a bit: hope. “You don’t want to hope too much and keep your expectations low,” says Spaghetti. “Still, I am excited about this. I feel like this record has maybe seven singles on it. We have no business putting out a record this good this late in our career. It is what makes us the greatest rock n roll band in the world.”

Blue are a UK duo that emerged in the 90s and were signed to the late great Andrew Weatherall's cult labels Sabres of Paradise and Emissions Audio Output. They made a triumphant return after an 18 year hiatus to drop a double album of archive material in 2021, and here with the newly launched Apricity Records. 'European Heart' is a sound design to slow heart and mind with whimsical chords floating out of reverb-rich hits and deeply buried dub rhythms. 'Hardlanding' has a more underwater and cavernous dub feel, then 'Down We Go' introduces a little tension with more sustained chords and textured drum breaks before 'The Balancing Point' shuts down with hang drums and icy synths creating subtle unease.

Da Lata

Edge Of Blue

Da Lata's 'Edge of Blue' marks a rebirth in the North London Tropicalia sound.

Da Lata's nucleus is musician/producer Chris Franck (founder member of Smoke City, Zeep, The Quiet Ones) and legendary DJ Patrick Forge. Chris Franck has worked with artists from all over the world such as Mayra Andrade, Bernie Worrell, Tony Allen, George Clinton, Ernest Ranglin, Marisa Monte, Nona Hendryx, Vieux Farka Toure amongst many others. Patrick Forge is a British jazz, jazz-dance and soul music DJ who spent much of the late 1980s and early 1990s DJing alongside Gilles Peterson at Dingwalls club in Camden, North London.

Never before has the band woven their many strands so sweetly, blending their diverse influences with the musical personalities of their extended family into a collection of songs that speak of struggle, survival, and ultimately hope.

Good Neighbours

Blue Sky Mentaility

The debut album from London 2 piece Good Neighbours includes the band’s breakout single 'Home' alongside singles 'Suburbs', 'Ripple' & 'Starry Eyed'. The album was written and recorded on the road through 2024 and 2025.

“'Blue Sky Mentality' has been our motto since day one. Our band began as a kind of light relief - a creative outlet to break from jobs that we couldn’t stand and some tough personal times. Over the last year, we ran with that feeling, writing our debut album on the road - in the back of tour buses, hotel rooms, and scattered corners of the world. That’s what ‘blue sky mentality’ means to us—finding light, friendship and a sense of escapism wherever you are.”

Blue Lake

The Animal

Blue Lake reveals his most ambitious album yet, which finds its visionary creator Jason Dungan harnessing the collective alchemy of his band, with ten spirited tracks that resonate with a powerful directness, evoking an ecological connection to the wider world.

Growing up in Dallas, Texas, Dungan then moved around for many years, living in both Europe and the USA, before finding a close connection to the Danish capital Copenhagen, where he now resides, a location heavily spotlighted in recent years as fertile creative ground for fellow experimental artists like Astrid Sonne, ML Buch and Clarissa Connelly. This well travelled upbringing would no doubt prove of spiritual significance on Dungan’s emergence as a singular artistic voice, traversing the planes of Ambient, Americana, with hues of Kosmische, uniquely infused with his own Nordic aesthetic.

The solo project (Blue Lake), now on its fifth album, found its name and inspiration via Don Cherry’s 1974 live album, sparking a creative epiphany in Dungan, who set off on a path into his own untapped sonic world, guided by what he cited as the emotional potential found within non-lyrical composition. With a newly inspired ethos aimed toward creating direct and simple instrumental music imbued with a deep sense of feeling, Jason began combining an array of musical elements that gave rise to his highly revered album ‘Sun Arcs’ (2023), with its “ornate, zither-led lattices” (Pitchfork, Best New Music). Conceived in the blissful isolation of a Swedish cabin set in the woods, this was music that soundtracked spring in full bloom. Then, in contrast to the solitary approach of ‘Sun Arcs’, the highly lauded mini-album ‘Weft’ (2025) began to set the tone for a more band-oriented approach to delivering the Blue Lake sound. Jason had by this time experienced a special collective energy with his band during a swathe of live performances, which he then sought to harness and distill on ‘The Animal’, leading him to take the project into a traditional recording studio (The Village) and its limitless potential along with his gifted cohorts.

‘The Animal’ at its core vividly celebrates human collaboration and is deeply rooted in a sense of community and non-hierarchical connectivity. The group's creative alchemy transcends outwards and beyond the musicians performing together, to summon an inclusive, existential and ecological connection to the wider world and its inhabited spaces. The album contemplates the idea of the human as an animal as Dungan explains: “I’m quite fascinated in thinking about humans more as part of the animal environment and not as something that’s so separated into a “human” realm, or sitting on top of a hierarchical pyramid. So the Animal is also me, or us - that we are just living, existing, in the same way as a piece of moss or a sparrow or a cow.

Dungan welcomed an entirely open dialogue, a process that started from early band rehearsals, which saw his demos quickly evolve and amass weight from double bass, cello, clarinet, viola and drums to become refined and audibly decorated. Jason focused on capturing more wide ranging depth in the recording process, dissecting detailed nuances in instruments to convey the intricate, ever changing balance and dynamics that play out in the natural and urban world as the theme too circulates around the idea of The city as an animal or urban being. Speaking of his Copenhagen home town, with its industrial past but close proximity to areas of semi-wilderness, as well as the sea, he explains the overlapping scenario: “I don’t think it’s possible now to think about nature as a pure or isolated thing. Being around animals in this setting, I think about how they communicate with each other, forge relationships, and navigate the city, but all without language. It’s not an experience of nature which is bucolic and uncomplicated - it’s an experience of nature and the animal world which is bound up in human activity.”

On ‘The Animal’, Dungan introduces the use of voice as an instrument, as a way of unlocking song-like characteristics as heard on the gracious album opener ‘Circles’, which sees the group embrace in choral unison, like in birdsong, their voices echo as a part of the surrounding sonic environment. The band are foregrounded and formidable in their delivery, forming a rich, acoustic accompaniment to Dungan’s zither strokes, earthy guitars and percussive patterns. The soundworld is noticeably bolder and livelier as evidenced on ‘Cut Paper’, with now regular mixing collaborator Jeff Zeigler capturing the fullness of the new band sound. Jason also enlisted the help of Danish producer Aske Zidore who encouraged him toward new working strategies, a liberating intervention which allowed the element of surprise and discovery. The centre ground is never fully consumed by Dungan as we find him consciously orchestrating from a respectful distance, giving generous space for the musician's spontaneous performance and improvisation, allowing their musical intuition to give rise to beguiling, holistic synchronicity.

Dungan wrote the cinematic ‘Berlin’ whilst on a tour stop in the German capital, with its lush zither flurries and long reverb decays painting an expansive late night ode to the rolling hill country of Texas. The poignance of Jason’s intimate, evocative writing is heard on ‘Flowers for David’, a heartfelt folk-leaning tribute with lofted fingerpicking guitar, signalling a fond farewell to a friend's passing. The album gains forward momentum on ‘Yarrow’ as the group move in melodic tandem, before the kaleidoscopic ‘Strand’, with its soaring solos and earthy undercurrents propelling toward a euphoric komische crescendo. The title track ‘The Animal’ is a brief melancholic foray into ballad-esque territory, with a drum machine charting a dotted path for emotive horns and a second gathering of wordless, healing atmospheric vocals. As we reach ‘To Read’ Dungan’s quest is encapsulated with wondrous clarity as the group lands entirely together on a resounding chord, a precious moment for Dungan who reels in the existence of the moment as they remain interlocked in sound and space. He concludes: “I’m interested in moments that are fleeting, with a powerful sense of togetherness, shared in the music.”

‘The Animal’ is a form of musical metamorphosis, still acoustic, yet more amplified, elevating it to new dimensions. The Blue Lake project takes on a new lease of life to encompass collaboration with Jason Dungan bound in a universal connectivity, resulting in his most ambitious album to date. A harmonious rejoicing that cements his reputation as a transformative presence in contemporary music.

"Blue House Rockin’" is the result of a unique collaboration between Soul Sugar and Dub Shepherds, two projects united by a shared love for roots reggae, vintage studio gear, and warm analog sound.

The album was recorded live over two intense days at Blue House Studio by Christophe Adam, using ribbon and tube microphones from the ’50s and ’60s, a Hammond organ, upright piano, Fender bass and Gibson guitars, classic amps and preamps, along with drums, syndrums and percussion. The sessions were transferred to a 24-track tape machine, and final mixes were crafted the old-school way by the Dub Shepherds at their own Bat Records Studio, using analog consoles and hardware vintage effects.

The tracklist brings together deep cuts, timeless classics, and original compositions. Curtis Mayfield’s "Give Me Your Love" and Aaron Frazer’s "My God Has a Telephone"(Colemine Records) - two soul gems, one vintage, one modern - are reimagined inna reggae style, both featuring the great Jolly Joseph on lead vocals, working wonders with his falsetto. He also shines on "Hold My Hand", a sweet and mellow original composition with lovers rock flair, written on the spot during the session.

Other standout moments include the soulful fire of UK singer Shniece McMenamin, who lights up "Family Affair" (Mary J. Blige / Dr. Dre) - flipped into a fiery hip-hop-meets-reggae version packed with energy and attitude.

Instrumentals like "Disco Jack", "Choice of Music", and "Drum Song" - all originally composed by Jamaican organ legend Jackie Mittoo - bring Guillaume 'Booker G' Metenier’s Hammond work to the front. The playful exchange between organ, guitar, and a rock-solid rhythm section is elevated by swirling spring reverb, dub echoes, and filter sweeps.

The album’s explosive title track. "Blue House Rock" was composed and recorded on the spot at the end of the session. A raw, greasy groove that sounds like The Meters jamming at Studio One or a lost instrumental from a Beastie Boys B-side.

"Blue House Rockin’" is a vibrant blend of soulful roots reggae and funk, wrapped in the deep, dusty tones of analog tape. A joyful and authentic studio experience, captured live and played loud.

Eddie Palmieri

Mi Congo Te Llama (Yoruba Chant) - Sacred Rhythm Remixes [2025 Blue Vinyl Edition]

Lifted from the "Africa Caribe" album, where Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell was given free rein to rework anything he wanted from the extensive Fania Records label archives, Eddie Palmieri's "Mi Congo Te Llama" is transplanted to a 12" pressing here.

Never one to miss the opportunity of creating an extended epic, Joe's remix clocks in at a whopping 16.30 minutes of spiritual Latin-jazz-house brilliance. As Joe says, “Some songs were edited, some were time-stretched…many parts were re-recorded…some new parts were recorded on top.” Or, in the case of this track; all of the above! On the flip there's a more (relatively) stripped-down 'Sacred Rhythm Dub Mix' - also guaranteed to rock the dancefloor.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Back for a short while and at a fraction of the cost of its current online value (£100), the extended, full fidelity remix of Eddie Palmieri by Body & Soul legend Joe Claussell.

Hand Habits

Blue Reminder

Meg Duffy of Hand Habits wrote new album Blue Reminder as a reaction to what one does when happiness actually comes knocking. After years of collaborating and touring with musicians like Kevin Morby and Perfume Genius, Duffy still draws on the solace of that community, but takes center stage, with their most assured, classic songwriting yet against a backstop of nuanced instrumentation and moving testimony. The record is a celebration of commitment: to being a more honest version of yourself, driven by a romantic love that recognizes the beauty of imperfection. Lead single “Wheel of Change” is perhaps the most joyous and anthemic song Duffy has ever made, with a chorus that remains stuck in your head, but the record as a whole traverses a myriad of emotions where the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been.

Memory Of Jane

Unsinking The Cypress

After experimenting with fragmented melodies in his 2023 EP 'In The Double', 'Unsinking The Cypress' marks a fuller exploration of Maïlé’s somber yet dynamic soundscapes. Drawing from his roots in jazz and filmmaking, he blends influences from Aphex Twin, Radiohead, and The xx to create atmospheric, emotive tracks.

The album, co-produced with Oli Bayston and Harvey Grant, evolved from isolated demos into collaborative works, with contributions from various musicians and explores themes of identity, dislocation, and the quest for peace, balancing melancholic moments with playful, experimental textures.

While the album confronts heavy emotions, it also carries an undercurrent of optimism, with tracks like ‘Praying I Don’t Fall’ and ‘Breathe’ showcasing Maïlé’s ability to find light within dark spaces. The album’s intimate yet expansive sound positions Memory Of Jane as an unpredictable artist, intent on keeping listeners intrigued and inspired by his ever-evolving creativity. Maïlé envisions 'Unsinking The Cypress' as a stepping stone to more experimental work, offering a glimpse of his evolving musical journey.

Yoshika Colwell

On The Wing

‘On The Wing’ is the debut album from Yoshika Colwell - a captivating and sophisticated collection of eleven songs that traverse the outer regions of folk, it is a record of acceptance and self-discovery, rooted in solitude and personal healing, from one of the UK’s most exciting new singer-songwriters.

Life, for us all, comes in seasons: the bitter frosts and balmy awakenings that herald the literal passing of time, but also the periods of retreat and re-emergence that bookmark our own individual paths along this mortal coil. For Yoshika, the last decade has found her existing at both ends of the spectrum. Following a period of complete dislocation fuelled by a move to a new town, lockdown and a traumatic break-up all striking in quick succession, it would take a stretch of restorative isolation to bring her back to full creative and personal health. Now, however, all of that sadness and pain, acceptance and slow-dawning hope has been channeled into ‘On The Wing’. Speaking about the album, she says:

“This album is a bit of a shrine I suppose to all of the pivotal experiences that shaped me during my twenties and it’s also, I feel, a tentative lean towards hopefulness for the future.

It is, at its core, an album about acceptance and release, and freedom from old binds. It was an extremely emotional and cathartic record to make. It was a challenge to put all of the things I was scared to say into these songs, to finally let them out of my head without shying away from the ugly or unpalatable emotions, but it felt like the only thing to do.

The process felt quite ritualistic, akin to writing down the things you know you need to let go of on a piece of paper and burning it.”

Produced by Oli Bayston (Barry Can't Swim, Rachel Chinouriri), the album was recorded at Studio Orbb, where Yoshika recorded her critically acclaimed debut EP ‘There’s A Time’. Since then, a string of releases have seen support from The New Cue, BBC 6Music, Paste, The Line of Best Fit and Stereogum, to name a few, whilst Yoshika has played her first shows in the US at SXSW. This summer she plays The Great Escape, Moseley Folk Festival and End of the Road.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Beautiful flickering folky melodies and silky smooth vocals, rich in the folk tradition but also awash with non-traditional production and an uncharacteristic levity and easy joy. Pale Blue Eyes

How Long Is Now (Richard Norris Vocal Remix)

Pale Blue Eyes release a remix of ‘How Long Is Now’, the first single from new album 'New Place', by legendary ‘spatial landscaper’ Richard Norris on their own Broadcast Recordings label. The original track features on their current ‘New Place’ album released earlier this year.

Richard describes his approach to the track as such:
"As soon as I heard the track I knew I'd approach the mix somewhere along the autobahn, about 3am, with Klaus Dinger trying to overtake on the inside lane. Approaching the speed limit. One for the kosmik and expanded psychonauts."

Finn Rees & SHOLTO

Love In Memory / Bluebell

This one was an unexpected treat - two of our favourite contemporary musicians, Finn Rees & SHOLTO coming together and collaborating on a double dose of celestial, cinematic alchemy

At Mr Bongo we are massive admirers of drummer, musician, and producer SHOLTO (Oscar Robertson). His two albums on Funk Night Records and DeepMatter Records, had both been highlights of their respective years.

We'd gotten to know Oscar and sent him a few records. Included in the package was Australian pianist- composer Finn Rees' debut album, Dawn Is A Melody, which was one of our favourite releases on Mr Bongo in 2024. In Oscar's words 'For me it was a standout modern jazz record - encapsulating a spiritual / hazy dreamy soundscape which hugely resonated with me. Glissando keys and harp with lush melodies, I was instantly intrigued." The pair started following each other online and as luck would have it, Finn was staying in London for the summer season, so they arranged to meet.

The pair instantly clicked and said it felt like they'd known each other for years. After 40 minutes of chatting, they started to jam. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were recorded over two days - a track a day in Oscar's SFJ studios. Laid down on mostly analogue equipment, the pair utilised Wurlitzer's, mellotrons, and ribbon mics through Oscar's '70s Studer desk. Composed and crafted without any real intentions, other than a shared appreciation for the same style of music and approach, the tracks started to take shape. The results were as lush, nostalgic and textured as you'd expect from these two brilliant musicians, with a classical feel inspired by artists such as Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, and Henry Mancini.

For the beautiful string arrangements, the pair recruited the talents of SHOLTO's longtime friend and collaborator Clementine Brown (Penguin Cafe Orchestra) and Matthew Hayes of 30/70, Allysha Joy, Xpress Point, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange fame, was brought in to play bass on 'Bluebell'.

So here we have it, a chance collaborative project built on two musicians' mutual respect for each other's outputs. The result is truly breathtaking.

The Shipbuilders

This Blue Earth

After releasing their debut album, ‘Spring Tide' in 2022, to strong reviews (4* in Mojo magazine, 5* in Morning Star with support from BBC 6Music), Liverpool-based band The Shipbuilders return with their second album 'This Blue Earth'. Singles, ‘Daydreaming’ and ‘Hills Of Mexico’ have led from the front, combining sea-sprayed bar-room jams with Morricone-hued escapist splendour.

Working once again with Danny Woodward (B.C. Camplight, Ladytron), the band has expanded to a five-piece, taking in a permanent brass section and pushing their sound to its natural limit. As ever, the band’s sound remains hard to pinpoint, but all human life is in here. There are musical echoes of Love, The Coral, The Everly Brothers and Charles Mingus, with lyrical giant touchstones such as Hemingway, Joyce and Steinbeck all feeding into a wonderful melting pot that sounds like everything and nothing you've heard. 'This Blue Earth' creates a cohesive universe around itself that begs to be explored.

Whether it is wild storytelling set to urgent drumbeats and sparkling guitars (95 Miles, Hills of Mexico), raucous, chaotic clatters (Daydreaming, Flagpole, The River) or wondrous blue-eyed melodies (Polynesia), nestled next to expansive, soaring soundscapes (On the Run, La Dolce Vita) and Merseysippi Gospel hollers (Heavy is the Weight), the album is never static or predictable and there isn't a cliché in sight.

Having supported Michael Head and The Red Elastic Band on several UK tour dates in 2024 and continuing to expand their own Club Shipwrecked nights, which has featured acts such as Andy Bell (Ride/Oasis), By the Sea, Bill Ryder-Jones, Stone Club, Roy and more, alongside having played festivals such as Kendal Calling, Sound City and LIMF, The Shipbuilders are building up to celebrate more of 'This Blue Earth' in venues around the UK through 2025.

The Bluebells

Sisters - 2025 Remaster

The Bluebells’ 'Sisters' is a perfect snapshot of early ’80s “Sound of Young Scotland”: Glasgow indie pop with bittersweet spirit, sharp hooks, and heartfelt harmonies. Signing to the then-nascent London Records, and working with a procession of esteemed producers (including Elvis Costello who became a mentor and teacher to the band), The Bluebells enjoyed three UK hits in the 1980s (‘Cath’, ‘Young at Heart’ and ‘I’m Falling’) before touring widely throughout Europe and North America, developing their live sound and signing to Seymour Stein’s Sire Records in the U.S.

A decade later in 1993 that ‘Young at Heart’ hit the U.K. No 1 spot following its use as a T.V. advert for Volkswagen. Fast forward to this decade The Bluebells have reformed with a flurry of shows across the past two years including a triumphant return to Glasgow at Barrowlands for Celtic Connects, and just announced for the Acoustic Stage for Glastonbury Festival 2025.

This new edition of 'Sisters' has been remastered and produced in consultation with the band, using the best audio sources available, including non-album singles and B-sides, bonus tracks from the original cassette edition and new liner notes from Will Hodgkinson.

Blueboy

Live At Water Rats

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of their celebrated album Unisex, Sarah Records legends Blueboy had their first full-band outing for 25 years with a sold-out show at The Water Rats in London’s Kings Cross on May 18, 2024.

With Gemma Malley taking over on vocals in place of the late Keith Girdler, Blueboy kicked off proceedings as an acoustic duo also featuring founder member Paul Stewart on guitar.

Then they were joined by Mark Cousens (bass) and Martin Rose (drums) for a blistering hour-long set featuring classics from throughout their 1990s career such as Popkiss, The Joy of Living, Air France, Meet Johnny Rave and Imipramine – plus One and Deux, the two astonishing new singles with which they announced their return.

This was a show nobody ever thought they’d see, and a joyful performance was to be a pivotal moment in the group’s extraordinary re-emergence. Fortunately the entire evening was professionally recorded for posterity – and now the majority of the songs are being released by Precious Recordings of London in a special blue vinyl package that’s limited to 500 copies worldwide.

Blueboy first got together in the early 1990s and went on to build a global following, touring Europe and Japan and featuring regularly in the UK independent charts with a series of acclaimed singles and well-regarded albums. At various times, their guitar-led sound has been described as having echoes of bands like The Smiths, Slowdive, Lush and The Cocteau Twins.

An album of new songs is planned for later in 2025. For now, though, this 13-song live LP is a must-have for any Blueboy fan. Also features sleeve notes from Sarah co-founder Matt Haynes and an array of photographs by Sasha Maese.

Puma Blue

Antichamber

'antichamber' marks a sonic shift for Puma Blue with Allen writing away from the full band setup focusing on obscure electronic textures and acoustic instrumentation. Whereas Puma Blue’s previous material has honed in on the centre point between trip-hop, Jazz and electronica, antichamber demonstrates a raw and direct approach to songwriting. It’s vulnerable and crushingly beautiful with vocals and guitar being the sole components, at times delivering dense narratives ('tapestry', 'hotel room') and at others the simplest sentiment ('in the absence of you').

Chris Tapley

Cocteau Twins' Blue Bell Knoll - 33 1/3

In this exploration of Cocteau Twins’ quintessential album, Chris Tapley traces lines in all directions from Blue Bell Knoll to paint a revealing portrait of the enigmatic trio and their career-long struggles with self-doubt, stubborn principles, and pure experimentation. Throughout their career, Cocteau Twins sought to escape definition. Lyrics were a closely-guarded secret, their transcendent recordings sounded completely unique, and they were notoriously tight-lipped during interviews.

The music, they said, should speak for itself. Only nobody could agree on what the music said. Released in 1988, their fifth full-length, Blue Bell Knoll, is the pinnacle of Cocteau Twins’ legendary ambiguity.

The first album recorded entirely in their own studio, these dense dreamlike songs capture the band as they refined the key elements of their iconic sound while testing the limits of language and the mixing desk. From lyrics and production to artwork and interviews, everything about this influential, one-of-a-kind band stokes contradictions and uncertainty, and raises the question: can anyone ever really define what a song means?

Jimi Tenor & Cold Diamond & Mink

July Blue Skies

Embark on a funky synth-drenched journey as the cosmic count Jimi Tenor reunites with Timmion Records’ soul architects Cold Diamond & Mink for yet another album. When placed side by side with the fellows’ recent effort 'Is There Love In Outer Space?', 'July Blue Skies' glides on a slightly more raw and mystical plane.

Crafted over fiery sessions between Tenor and Cold Diamond & Mink, this vinyl release offers six soul-grasping tracks ranging from mellow groove to soundtrack funk. The album’s opening title song kicks off with an extended analog synth intro which eventually develops into a sweet romantic invocation, painting a sonic canvas reminiscent of a boundless summer sky. The most vocal tune of this quite instrumental set of songs 'Sky Train Baby' propels the listener on a locomotive ride through the star systems while 'Venus of Barsoon' with its drum breaks and fuzz sounds blast you straight into sci fi movie funk territory.

The album’s B-side opens with 'Ikuchi', where Tenor’s always trusted flute and tenor sax take the spotlight over the slinky library beats. Closing the album we discover two single releases, the sublime 'Summer Of Synesthesia' and the demonic 'Tsicroxe' both completely worthy to hear sequenced inside this album as well. This album might be just the Spring jam that you needed in your life.

Momma

Welcome To My Blue Sky

Like so many coming-of-age stories that leave a long-lasting impact, Brooklyn-based Momma’s new album Welcome to My Blue Sky takes place during a charmed and turbulent summer—a transformative moment in time that co-founders Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten sum up as a period of “parallel chaos”.

Mainly recorded live with the full band at Studio G in Brooklyn and produced by their bandmate Aron Kobayashi Ritch, Welcome to My Blue Sky marks the follow-up to Household Name—a critically acclaimed release that manifested their ascent. With the help of drummer Preston Fulks, Momma arrived at the album’s 12 immaculately composed yet immediately potent songs by matching the raw urgency of rock with the sticky melodies and taut arrangements of pop—a dynamic born from their deepened commitment to finding the most direct vessel for their emotional expression. “With this album we were less concerned with sounding cool and heavy and rock & roll and much more focused on good, clean songwriting that hopefully inspires people to sing along and mean every word,” Weingarten reveals.

Equal parts shared memoir, communal outpouring, and riveting emotional travelogue, each track is infused with both unsparing self-awareness and immense sensitivity, and the result is a bold leap forward for one of the most creatively uncompromising and singular voices in indie-rock.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Welcome to the world of young love, heartbreak & infidelity; sun scorched road trips; high school jealously; and riffs bigger than the 90s jeans you’re currently rocking.

I shouldn’t like Momma; it’s like the aural equivalent of watching The OC or Dawson’s Creek whilst slamming back tequila shots. But it’s so unavoidably infectious. Though the band are now based in Brooklyn, Etta & Allegra’s ultra Californian vocal harmonies soar over the songs like the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset, with lyrics that instantaneously knock years off your actual age. I think the Japanese call it natsukashii - rose-tinted nostalgia that fills your heart with joy. There’s a touch of classic skater punk aesthetics, a bit of Weezer’s (who they’ve supported on tour) preppy innocence and demeanour; all whilst being more than capable of sizzling your nose hairs with their stupendously large guitar hooks and kicking drum work.

At first I’d have thought music this sweet and immediate would have burned out quickly, but no – the album’s been on constant rotation in my life throughout the year. From afternoons here in the shop, to driving through the Welsh countryside, to miserable mornings where you need an instant pick-me-up. In interviews they say they wanted to write an album in which you’ll learn every lyric – I have! Word on the street is they’re amazing live too; and let’s get it straight – this band are still firmly in their infancy and ascendency – there’s gonna be more to come, and I for one can’t wait.

Jetstream Pony

Bowerbirds And Blue Things

Jetstream Pony combine post-punk, indie-pop and power-pop, featuring Beth Arzy (The Luxembourg Signal/Trembling Blue Stars/Aberdeen) on vocals and percussion, Shaun Charman (The Wedding Present/The Popguns/The Fireworks) on guitar and vocals, Kerry Boettcher (Turbocat) on bass, Tom Levesley on drums, and recently joined by Mark Matthews (The Dentists/The Treasures Of Mexico) on guitar.

Returning with a new full length 'Bowerbirds and Blue Things', the band's evolution continues, and there are branches into new territory. 'The Relativity of Wrong' is driven by heavy bass, a tale of youthful misbehaviour, with guest vocals from Eleni Poulou, formerly of The Fall. 'Tendrils' has a darker presence, sung by Kerry, echoing and ghostly. 'Bonanza 2 Tango Sierra' and 'Look Alive!' both have a driving feel, and the power-pop is still intact with songs like 'Bubblegum Nothingness'. 'Bowerbirds And Blue Things' is a varied album that keeps the underlying Jetstream Pony sound, but with real development.

Macie Stewart

When The Distance Is Blue

'When the Distance is Blue' is Macie Stewart’s International Anthem debut. The Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser describes the collection as “a love letter to the moments we spend in-between”—a letter realized via an intentional return to piano, her first instrument and the origin of her creative expression. Here Stewart creates a striking and cinematic work through collages of prepared piano, field recordings, and string quartet compositions, one that gives shape to a transient universe all its own while tracing the line of her musical past, full circle.

Long-heralded in musician circles for her versatility, Stewart stands as a distinguished, go-to collaborator across genre and style, with a collaborative CV that reads like a dream year-end list—performing strings for Makaya McCraven or Japanese Breakfast; singing harmonies with Tweedy; arranging for Alabaster DePlume, Resavoir, Mannequin Pussy, or SZA; co-leading the jagged art-rock experimentation of Finom, her duo with songwriter Sima Cunningham. This varied-yet-distinct sound has led to a name recognition that goes beyond the devoted liner note enthusiast.

'When the Distance is Blue' finds her gathering those threads and focusing those sensibilities into a contemplative 8-piece song cycle with help from noted collaborators Lia Kohl, Whitney Johnson (Matchesse), and Zach Moore, as well as International Anthem engineer Dave Vettraino. The result is an album with a musical lexicon which lands somewhere between Alvin Curran’s 'Songs and Views from the Magnetic Garden' and Claire Rousay’s 'A Softer Focus'.

James Kaplan

3 Shades Of Blue : Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans & The Lost Empire Of Cool

1959 saw Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and the other members of Miles's sextet come together to record the bestselling jazz album of all time: Kind of Blue. 3 Shades of Blue follows the paths of Miles, Coltrane and Evans to the mountaintop of 1959 and their roads on from there. It's a book about music and business, race and heroin, and an astonishing meditation on creativity and the strange hothouses that can produce its full flowering.

But above all this is the story of three very different men - their struggles, their choices, their inspiration. The tapestry of their lives is, in James Kaplan's hands, an American Odyssey.

Pale Blue Eyes

New Place

The third album from Pale Blue Eyes is called 'New Place' – invocation of fresh horizons; swapping creamy Devon for the synth central of Sheffield. The album arrives on the back of extensive and emotional transit. For PBE, 2024 started with a wonderful tour of 12 European countries with Slowdive. Over 12,000 kilometres. Snow and deep cold in Norway and Poland. Drought-stricken landscapes in France and Spain. On and on, joyously so. The year’s end brought more movement for the married couple at the core of Pale Blue Eyes, singer and guitarist Matt Board and drummer and synth queen Lucy Board. Sadly, family tragedy catalysed a move from South Devon to South Yorkshire.

“Change is a theme throughout the new album,” says Lucy. “It’s about being in a new place, starting again but reflecting on the journey and what and who got us to this place. It's a celebration of making it to this point and starting again.”

That new start is fully manifested on Pale Blue Eyes’ new album, released on the band’s Broadcast Recordings label. Return single 'How Long Is Now' brought uplifting synth carousels and was titled after a Berlin mural and art installation. On 'Pieces Of You' gorgeously deliquescent guitar ripples out over Matt’s distinctive tenor voice. Be There is meditative, delicate, with guest vocals from Rachael Swinton of Glasgow electronic-rock duo Cloth. Aubrey made his own fretless bass. It features on the track 'Seven Years'. Several tracks have input from two musicians who have featured in the PBE live line-up – Tom Sharkett, music producer and guitarist with W.H. Lung, and music producer and musician Lewis Johnson-Kellett.

“The new album comes with a new landscape,” says Matt, summing up. “We were in new surroundings with new city sounds – a bit overwhelming for me, but also exciting. I hope the result is uplifting, driving, a perpetual forward motion." There are new sounds but also a steadfast Krautrock influence, alongside some of the band’s other favourite moods and flavours. The album reflects the end of an era and embracing new beginnings in a new place.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Beautifully rich shoegaze soundscapes with shimmering chorused guitars and dreamy, lysergic vocals swimming over the top. There are echoes of classic 90's 'gaze here, but it's accomplished with an injection of modern sounding pop song structures and a keen production ear. Wonderfully hazy, but without being muddied, Pale Blue Eyes take the best elements of shoegaze, synth and pop and bring them together perfectly.

Peter Stanfield

The Yardbirds : The Most Blueswailing Futuristic Way-Out Heavy Beat Sound

The Yardbirds were trailblazers in the rapid development of pop music in Britain between 1963 and 1968. With members including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, they helped to set the basic template of what has been known ever since as rock music, and gave rise to one of the most commercially successful bands of all time: Led Zeppelin. Peter Stanfield situates the band in the rise of British R&B and the tumult of the psychedelic era.

Obsessively detailed about both the band and 1960s pop culture, this is the book fans of The Yardbirds have always needed.

Vinyl re-issue of the third album from The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the outfit featuring former Pussy Galore front man Jon Spencer, Judah Bauer and Russell Simins.

Originally released in 1993,  'Extra Width' is (slightly) more polished than their previous releases, but still has the same raw energy. Songhoy Blues

Héritage

From the first listening to 'Héritage', the much-awaited fourth album by Songhoy Blues, it is clear that the 4-piece rock band from northern Mali are in a new frame of mind. With 'Héritage', they move into a more acoustic, creative re-imagining of the “desert blues” style that has brought them to world fame.

The Songhoy are an ethnicity living along the bend of the Niger river in northern Mali (their language is Songhai, hence the two spellings that are often used interchangeably). Songhoy music is one of the backbones of the “desert blues” sound. Songhoy Blues pay tribute to some of the great musicians of the past, whose work continues to inspire them, giving ‘a big thank you to the ancestors who bequeathed works of art so that future generations could orient themselves’.

Charismatic, articulate and creative, the band burst onto the scene in 2013 with a powerful style and stage manner once described as “Timbuktu Punk”. Their songs deal with issues of life and love in Mali, and are based on five-note scales, rock rhythms, gritty vocals, and glittering guitar. These elements are ever present in their new album Héritage, but with a more intimate groove laced with other sounds from different ethnic traditions from around the country. Migration and forced displacement bring new perspectives to the notion of heritage in their music.

'Héritage' was recorded in the Remote Records Studio and Studio Moffou in Bamako, with producer Paul Chandler, and draws on the remarkable wealth of musical talent in the city. The album presents new compositions and reworkings of old classics. It is infused with the ethereal sounds of various traditional instruments, all in the hands of great Malian masters.

'Héritage' is compulsive listening for Songhoy Blues’ fans – at home and abroad - and more widely, fans of desert blues, rock, or just good music.

Gotts Street Park

Diego EP

Following the burgeoning success of their debut album, ‘On The Inside’, the UK’s premiere hip-hop / soul / R&B collective Gotts Street Park get around to a long-awaited vinyl release of their breakthrough ‘Diego E.P.’; a musical suite of instrumental songs formed from the raw, live chemistry of congregating physically in a room. Turning their inspiration loose and escaping predictability, Gotts Street Park drew from the splicing techniques employed by Miles Davis’s ‘Bitches Brew’ to create a series of moments isolated, assembled and resampled, forming the illusion of one organic, fluid take.

A union of a sound exploring psychedelia and bedded in their familiar hip-hop instrumentals; title track and single Diego weaves a course through sturdy, meandering funkholds and snaking guitar riffs. Though there are no lyrics, the names of the songs reveal a world inspired by film soundtracks.

Second track ‘Ozu’ is named after cult Japanese film director Yasujirō Ozu and is, like his movies, engrossing, peaceful and oddly voyeuristic.

EP bookend, ‘Enzo’s Theme’, explicitly calls to mind a specific scene of a movie - the tension-filled passage in ‘The Godfather’ where Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) protects his father from assassins in hospital, with the assistance of Enzo The Baker (Gabriele Torrei).

Famed for their contemporary take on a retro sound, the trio comprising of Josh Crocker (bass, production), Tom Henry (keys) and Joe Harris (guitar) have garnered fans and notable acclaim from an impressive litany of talent. Their seamless blend of traditional soul meets contemporary hip-hop has underpinned vocals from Rosie Lowe, Celeste, Pip Millett, Kali Uchis and Rachel Chinouriri, to name but a few.

What does it mean to be perfectly blue? Perhaps it means swimming contently in the waters of deep, complex emotions, or simply learning to spin low moments into casual days. For Luka Seifert, who makes music as RIP Swirl, the idea of being fine with not being happy all the time was the catalyst for his second album, Perfectly Blue. The two words captured something: learning to embrace being blue, while using music as a way of processing emotions.

Moreish Idols

Pale Blue Dot

Moreish Idols have carved out a unique position for themselves in the burgeoning London scene. Whereas their debut material showcased a restless, jerky, jagged and rhythmically centred sound that bore the influence of energetic post-punk, their second EP showcased an entirely different side to the band. This evolution saw the group stitch together a looser constellation of ideas, combining swooning tremolo guitars, prickly melodic riddles, erudite saxophone improvs, and flexible rhythms, sounding like Watery, Domestic-era Pavement one second and the bucolic Canterbury Scene the next, but always, always like Moreish Idols most of all.

With their new single “Pale Blue Dot” the band continue to transform and challenge their songwriting sensibilities. Blending subtly intricate, cyclical acoustic instrumentation that swells and breaks around the bands gently layered vocal harmonies, the track once again sees the band knolling their work to rebuild it into something new, direct, and honest.

Speaking on the track, the band says, “Pale Blue Dot has been through many iterations, from simple drum machine / guitar demo, to evil krautrock demon hellscape. A spontaneous decision led by Dan Carey brought us to his studio at 8 in the morning to quickly run the song in a new, shortened arrangement, played on acoustic guitars and simplified down to its bare bones. It was a beautiful morning, and we all felt we were hearing the song the way it was meant to be heard: just straight to the point.

The track encourages you to kill your darlings, soak in the vastness of everything, and commit to your own obliterating but necessary ego death. Pale Blue Dot has been through this same journey and for that it’s a very special one for us.”

Rosie Lowe

Lover, Other

“I wanted this album to sound like a collage”, says Rosie Lowe of her new album 'Lover, Other'. “My love of choral music, sample culture, the energy of live music and the intricacy of more produced elements in electronic music. I wanted to incorporate it all into an album, weaving together the different processes in writing that excite me”. It’s a messy mission statement but one born from a decade of experience in the music industry - and a lifetime of obsession before that - and over the fifteen tracks of 'Lover, Other', that complexity and conflict is reflected – self doubt pitted against self-assurance, age against youth, life against death - Lowe’s inner dialogue laid bare. It’s a tightrope trapeze-act, a frankenstein vehicle for her art, expertly tied together by Lowe’s flawless vocal layers and effortless delivery. The resulting record is a celebration of all sides of Lowe’s character and musicality, a patchwork tapestry of her experience.

We Are Winter's Blue And Radiant Children

No More Apocalypse Father

WAWBARC is Mathieu Ball (BIG|BRAVE) + Efrim Manuel Menuck (Thee Silver Mt Zion, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) + Jonathan Downs (Ada) + Patch (Ada). On “NO MORE APOCALYPSE FATHER” they present six modal lullabies drenched in seared distortion, slathered across striding electronic pulses.

Ball and Menuck began creating music in and for the bleakest moments of Montréal winters: “We’re honoring that idea of winter, when you come inside and your house is warm, a place that only exists because of how cold it is outside,” says Menuck. They later recruited Downs and Patch to flesh out their initial ideas. Menuck met them in 2015 when recording Ada’s final album at Montréal’s Hotel2Tango — where they reconvened to make this record.

“NO MORE APOCALYPSE FATHER” is an album about witnessing bleakness from a place of safety. Carrying newfound descriptive depth, thanks to the quartet’s open-ended songs freeing him from writing in meter, Menuck likens his lyrics to photorealism. On opener ‘Rats and Roses’ he sings of an unnamed city struck by an unknown cataclysm, but the details are local: specifically, his neighbors inadvertently poisoning birds when tackling a rat infestation. It’s backed by blown out synths and guitars reaching a soaring crescendo. “Seeing things from a distance and not being able to intervene happens a lot on the record,” Menuck explains. “If you’re a feeling and thinking person, that’s just part of the human condition. We watch horror unfolding from afar, unable to do anything concrete to change it.”

A powerless witness, able to describe but not intervene. ‘Dangling Blanket From A Balcony (White Phosphorous)’ references Michael Jackson holding his child over a hotel balcony in 2002 the bizarre media spectacle still lodged in Menuck’s psyche. This and the album’s closing track also elegize white phosphorous, a technology of war designed to light up battlefields but capable of inflicting horrific burns on those it touches. Illumination and horror in one, here underpinning scenes picturesque and terrifying. “The last song ‘(Goodnight)

White Phosphorous’ is deliberately like a lullaby,” says Menuck. “Written from the viewpoint of watching white phosphorous falling outside your window.”

Scorched and tarnished and laden with harrowing imagery, “NO MORE APOCALYPSE FATHER” is also a record bathed in light: the bewilderment of hopeful spirits witnessing despair, watching a blizzard of distress unfold outside from a place of relative shelter and comfort. You could call that emotional ambivalence, maybe numbness. But those words are too passive for the weight of conflicted feeling resonating through the album.

“I never know how I feel on an overcast day when the sun is still bright despite the grayness and the light is very flat. The colours become more saturated, and you see a single flower, say a morning glory, whose colour is so vibrant beneath the gray, I don’t know if that’s a lovely sensation or a terrible sensation. It’s both,” says Menuck.

John Coltrane

Plays The Blues - 2024 Reissue

Contains new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide to Jazz 's writer Brian Morton.

In 1960, and after recording the music to be issued on The Avant Garde (with Don Cherry), and the all- time classic My Favorite Things , Coltrane embarked on the making of Coltrane Plays the Blues, a thematic LP consisting of six tunes based on the blues.

'Blues for Bechet', one of the two tracks on which Coltrane plays soprano sax, is an obvious dedication to the man who brought the instrument to jazz, the great Sidney Bechet. Pianist McCoy Tyner sits out on 'Blues to Bechet ' and 'Blues to You', reducing the quartet to a trio on these two tracks.

"A powerful session. As for the phrase 'plays the blues' in the title, that's not an indicator that the tunes are conventional blues (they aren't). It's more indicative of a bluesy sensibility." - AllMusic, 4.5 STARS (Richie Unterberger)

The Sidewinder - 2024 Reissue

Lee Morgan’s magnum opus 'The Sidewinder' - recorded in 1963 and released in 1964 - was both a comeback and a coronation. The prodigious trumpeter had debuted on Blue Note in 1956 at the age of 18, but personal problems in the early-60s forced him off the scene temporarily. His rebound recording turned out to be 'The Sidewinder', an assured and energetic set of 5 indelible Morgan originals featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins. The album became his biggest commercial success fueled by the irrepressible title track.

Steve Pilgrim (Featuring Paul Weller)

Beautiful Blue

Working with Paul Weller as producer and co-writer on his 5th studio album, Liverpool troubadour Steve Pilgrim releases the achingly melancholic “Beautiful Blue”. The album features Paul Weller, Steve Craddock and Rachael Jean Harris with string arrangements from Hannah Peel.

“Stevie, I’ve got this idea I thought might be good for you…”

A text from Paul Weller was the only inspiration Steve Pilgrim needed to finish the writing of his much-anticipated sixth album ‘Beautiful Blue’

Acclaimed songwriter Steve Pilgrim, who has played drums and sung with living legend Paul Weller for more than a decade, was in the middle of writing the songs of his life when a modern catalyst arrived. Pilgrim was reaching for humanity, humility and sanity in a fouled and confused pre-pandemic world of cultural unrest and rising extremism when the audio note landed (“Stevie, I’ve got this idea I thought might be good for you…”) and set the scene for Pilgrim’s progress.

“It was pre-pandemic, but still a time of political and cultural unrest in the UK: Brexit, austerity, the rise of extremism in various forms. It felt as a country we were being divided, pulled-apart… atomised. In the midst of this unrest and disquiet - as people, individuals, families, as humans - there was a sense of loss of direction and I felt it was important to break through to the other side with some semblance of positivity and hope. That’s how these songs started: to start making sense of becoming a functioning human in a dysfunctional country.”

That’s how they started, but it was the text from Weller that helped bring them together for critically-acclaimed songsmith Pilgrim. These sketches of songs, melodies and chord progressions became the beginning of a co-writing direction for Pilgrim/Weller and took the material to a new place, tugging and pushing the softly-spoken Scouser in new ways that only Weller could provoke. Tunes such as ‘Test of Faith’, ‘Don’t Let The Mirror Break You’, ‘One With All’, ‘Universe’ and ‘Where Our Love Goes’ have echoes of Pilgrim’s previous work, but add a warmth and classicism found in his co-writer’s celebrated ‘True Meanings’ record.

“By the time the pandemic arrived in 2020 the songs were ready and Paul suggested we start recording the album at his studio in Woking. With the assistance of house engineer and sonic wizard Charles Rees, within three days we had the bulk of the record done. We had ‘Beautiful Blue’ and everything was going to be ok.”

With the aural assistance of string arrangements from the renowned Hannah Peel, ‘Beautiful Blue’ is the work of an artist who finds strength in still life and shouts loudest when whispering. The songs on this album are streamlined, lacking fat and offer intricate acoustic guitar playing weaving in and out of memorable melodies (‘New Sky’), undulating strings (the gorgeous title track) and devastatingly delicate vocal harmonies (‘Everyday’).

“This set of songs took a while to complete as I wanted to impose thematic constraints on my writing. I knew it was important to stay focused and that’s when the message from Paul arrived. What an honour. The songs might now be written, but they couldn’t be realised without listeners… it would be great to see you at a gig.”

Iraina Mancini

Undo The Blue (Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Re-Animation) / Sugar High (Saint Etienne Remix)

Needle Mythology, the label founded by music writer, author and broadcaster Pete Paphides, is thrilled to announce the signing of the eagerly anticipated debut album by London singer-songwriter and renowned DJ Iraina Mancini. Iraina’s singular pop vision will be known to regular listeners of 6 Music, where her singles ‘Undo The Blue’, ‘Deep End’, ‘Shotgun’ and ‘Do It (You Stole The Rhythm)’ have all been enthusiastically embraced. Iraina's obsession with music stretches back into her early childhood, much of which was spent absorbing her parents’ collection of old 45s, in particular her dad’s Northern Soul records – an alternative education which meant that, by her early 20s, she was a familiar presence in the DJ booth at many discerning London club nights. Her love of French ye-ye, British freakbeat, Brazilian bossa nova, soul, and Turkish psych will be well-known to regular listeners of her Soho Radio show.

Having always sung from a young age, Iraina embarked on a string of collaborators such as Jagz Kooner (Sabres Of Paradise), Sunglasses For Jaws (Miles Kane) and Simon Dine (Paul Weller, Noonday Underground) which truly saw her find her metier as a songwriter, conjuring melodies that stand shoulder to shoulder alongside her impeccable influences. Iraina describes her first single for Needle Mythology ‘Cannonball’ as “a celebration of that moment when you meet someone you really fall for and it knocks you for six. It can be a bit scary, but you’ve just got to go with what your intuition is telling you.”

Written with Simon Dine, the vertiginous heart-in-mouth abandon of the song perfectly mirrors the circumstances that brought it into being. Iraina cites Jacqueline Taïeb’s 1967 single 7h du Matin as an early inspiration for the song: “There’s such a great energy about that song. Her vocal is amazing and all those stops and starts that grab your attention.”

“This is an artist I absolutely love, one of our rising stars at 6Music.“ Lauren Laverne BBC 6Music.

“Iraina seizes on the best aspects of the past, blurring those impeccable 60s and 70s influences with a touch of modernity.” Clash.

“Full of femme fatale poise and swooning chanteuse flourishes.” The Times.

Aaron Frazer

Into The Blue

“Into The Blue is the clearest portrait of who I am as an artist. It’s me through and through,” says multi-instrumentalist Aaron Frazer. A daring blend of soul, psychedelia, spaghetti western, disco, gospel and hip-hop, Into the Blue represents the impressive range of Frazer’s sonic talents. Frazer maintains the unmistakable falsetto and classic songwriting he’s known for, but plants Into the Blue firmly in the now with a hip-hop mentality at its core, weaving together genres and production techniques to form something new.

Into The Blue was conceived, like so many classic records, out of actual heartbreak. Frazer moved cross-country from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and embarked on a journey that’s reflected in the album’s themes of grief, loneliness, and searching for healing. “Into The Blue really means heading into the unknown. That has been the last year of my life and I’m still in the blue,” Frazer explains. “But there are also songs here that celebrate love and the giddiness of a new relationship and all that. That’s part of a breakup to me, processing the whole thing, remembering the things that were right as much as the things that were wrong.”

Frazer wrote on every track and played several live instruments on the album. The title track, “Into The Blue”, is a haunting, resolute anthem, combining cinematic strings and tough-as-nails breakbeats as Frazer heads west. “Here I go, to a place where the broken heart knows,” he sings. “It’s all I can do. Back into the blue.” “Payback” is an explosive dancefloor heater, featuring shimmering tambourines and driving bass lines. Northern soul drums meet snarling fuzz guitar, hurdling towards its epic conclusion.

The album features moments of towering arrangements, recalling David Axelrod and Ennio Merricone, balanced by rawness, incorporating iPhone recordings and one-take vocals. For Into the Blue, Frazer enlisted Grammy-winner Alex Goose as coproducer, known for his crate-digging samples and collaborations with hip-hop artists like Freddie Gibbs, Madlib and Brockhampton. Frazer also experimented with samples for the first time on a record, drawing from unexpected sources like 90s R&B group Hi-Five. Though Into the Blue is born out of heartbreak, Frazer hopes it leaves listeners with a sense of optimism. “You know, you can still laugh on a day when you’re grieving,” he says, “there’s no peaks without valleys,” he says, but Into The Blue sees Aaron Frazer at new heights.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A beautiful, swinging selection of psychedelic ballads and shimmering poppy numbers. The title track is a particular delight, bringing to mind Morricone as much as it does Morcheeba or Khruangbin. A perfectly produced melting pot.
