Emerson, Lake & Palmer

In The Beginning / When The Apple Blossoms Bloom

This special green slab of wax brings together two Emerson, Lake & Palmer tracks, one of them with a fresh twist from Dope Jams. The classic ballad 'From the Beginning' is rich in warm acoustic guitar and Greg Lake's evocative vocals so it stands as one of the band's most beloved and accessible moments. On the flip, 'When the Apple Blossoms Bloom...' receives a bold Dope Jams Kaatskill Mountain take, which flips it into a sprawling, psychedelic-drenched remix that infuses the instrumental with hypnotic grooves and experimental textures. With both cuts on one 12", this one is both a nod to prog rock's legacy and a bridge to new sonic frontiers.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Another one of those tidy Dope Jams edits shines the spotlight on Balearic-rock crossover legends Emerson, Lake & Palma with two incredibly striking tracks given the once over.

Blossoms

Gary

Stockport’s favourite sons return with their fifth studio album, produced by Jungle’s J Lloyd and James Skelly and includes a collaborations with CMAT. At just over 30 minute long, it’s a short sweet mood enhancing blast of indie pop - Exactly what Blossoms do so well.

The album is named after a 8 foot fibre glass gorilla was stolen from a Lanarkshire Garden Centre in early 2023, and since then there has been a campaign to locate him, his rear end was recently found, but his frontage is still missing!

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The video for the eponymous single includes both Rick Astles AND Sean Dyche, and the lads nicking a gorilla and making off with it in what appears to be the 60's. Does that help with your decision to buy the album? What about it sounding like a quintessential distillation of Blossoms' key sound into a conceptual curio that's both expansive and warmly familiar.

    Blossoms

    Ribbon Around The Bomb

Ribbon Around The Bomb is the first new music from Blossoms since their ‘vibrant single’ (NME) Care For, which was released in 2021.

Speaking about the new album and single, Blossoms’ Tom Ogden says:
‘While on tour in 2019 in Mexico, I visited Frida Kahlo’s house. Looking at her paintings on show, someone had described one of them as being like a ‘ribbon around a bomb’. I immediately thought that it was a great title for a song and album because of the imagery that it evoked in my mind. I thought about how lots of things in life could be described as being a ribbon around a bomb in the sense that as people we often dress things up which have a darkness lying beneath them’.

The band’s new album is produced by their consistent and renowned collaborators James Skelly and Rich Turvey and revolves around a central character ‘The Writer’.

      Tom Ogden explains:

"The more songs I wrote, the more I realised that the writer referenced in the songs was in fact me. Having been so busy for the past eight years I and the band have never really had the chance to step back and reflect on what we’ve achieved. You’re so focused on the future; write the next album then tour. Your life is usually mapped out at least two years in advance".

Standout tracks on the record include Ode To NYC, described by Tom as ‘a love letter to my favourite city, as well as my wife’, The Writer which deals with the fear of and frustration associated with writers block and Everything About You, one of the album’s only love songs, which Tom says is ‘as honest as they come’. Visions meanwhile contains one of the album’s key lyrics ‘Was I complete at 23’, as Tom explains. ’At 23 I had just had a number 1 album and begun my relationship with my now wife Katie. Reflecting on what I’d achieved at such a young age left me wondering, what now?’

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Blossoms are back! Stockport's favourite export bring with them all the vim of their 2020 hit, 'Foolish Loving Spaces' and expand into even more neon-tinged electronic realms. It's as bold as anything they've done, but perfectly in keeping with their keen grasp of melodicism and pop progressions.

Foolish Loving Spaces is the follow up to the Blossoms' 2018, top 5 album Cool Like You and features recent single Your Girlfriend, released earlier this year.

Foolish Loving Spaces was produced by the band’s consistent and talented team of James Skelly and Rich Turvey at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool. Tom Ogden’s increasingly direct lyrical range turns album three into a romantic page-turner of light and shade, while its divergent moods are supplied by Myles Kellock’s piano and keyboard lines, careering from urgent stabs of TV game show-theme synth to more classic, rolling notes. The record’s multi-instrumental colour and widescreen sound is provided by pedal steel / lead guitarist Josh Dewhurst, while Joe Donovan on drums and Charlie Salt on bass bring fluidly danceable grooves throughout, complemented on occasion, by a wall of gospel harmony.

Speaking about the inspiration for the album, the band explain:
'It’s just a pure celebration of love in all of its splendid and baffling guises, toying with the so-called sins of lust and forbidden infatuation … inspired, in ways, by a summer spent listening to Stop Making Sense, The Joshua Tree & Screamadelica’.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Blossoms return once again for the second time in as many years, refining their sound into a more progressive, forward facing mix of their trademark jangle with a more beat-driven percussive backline thrown in there for good measure.

'Blossoms second album sees them return with 11 tracks of 80s inspired synth-layered pop bliss. On lead single 'I Can't Stand It', the band bring the tempo up and combine it with cascading synth riffs, while 'There's A Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)' brings a previously unheard anthemic rock quality to the bands sound'...

Furthering their domination of the northern music scene, they take the rawkous sound of their debut and bolster it with the experience learnt from their time touring, absorbing influence from all corners of the musical spectrum. This is a confident and mature follow-up and one sure to cement their reputation and productivity for years to come.
