BETWEEN STATIONS

Cowper

Between Edits 001

There comes a point during a night of sonically enhanced debauchery where the high speed kinetics of the peak time slowly give way to a more pronounced throb. The lesser devoted dancers have skirted, and only the hardcore remain. Determined to hammer it out till the bitter end, some DJs refuse to adopt a more sensual approach as the night before morphs into the morning after. This record is not for them.

This record is for the dancers who, post 3-4AM, love to lose themselves in a hazy decadence; perhaps leaning against the nearest solid structure, gyrating passionately in time with the decelerated but nonetheless powerful grooves emanating seemingly from the cosmos. Or the ones who slowly gather, ever-closer to the booth in an adoring mass of quivering salaciousness.

The second release on Between Stations (proceeding a cult collected tape release by Doom TV), sees label head Cowper explore these realms with a louche determination. Possessing atom-splitting heft at a tectonic pace, A1 writhes around on a French Kiss theme, tantalizing FX swirls and thundering bass before sensual pads slowly begin to caress the central nervous system, taking us off into hypnotic revelry.

B1 grasps onto a swirling and mesmerising, opiated version of Larry Heard. A spine-tingling concoction of elements and drifting echoes transporting us to a blissful ocean, ebbing with the sonic currents in a suspended state of glee. Is it Balearic? No, this one’s from a paradise pool party on one of Saturn’s moons.

B2 pulls on the space cord, bringing us back from our temporary drift with a slow and steady hand. Like Steve Rutter and Martin Bonds guzzling on a cosmic cocktail, this one lets the machines do the talking whilst we concentrate on keeping stable as the final remnants of euphoria are squeezed from our serotonin glands.

Two releases in and we find Between Stations in fine fettle, keeping their positive trajectory as they delve further into mutant dancefloor moods.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Sure to draw the most ardent club freaks from outta the recesses of the club for one last group love-in before the lights turn on. Cowper's perfectly poised, end-of-nite throb is the kinda of unhurried sonic balm our fast paced world needs at the moment.

BETWEENTAPES001

With common affinities for illbient, leftfield, and gritty sounds, DOOM TV (Loma Doom and T.S.V.T.) explore what punk can mean within other genres, leaving nothing unscathed or unmentioned.

A cartography emerges as they run lines through acoustic, fogged-out percussion, to dub-esque and throbbing metal, all the way back to noise and drone. There is no interest in being seamless or cosmetic here. Just like the tracks, the mix is sincere, pushing against the smoothed-over quality of a CDJ’s BPM-sync precision. We end up with swathes of playful and heavy moods which come and go naturally, leaving us with no notion of how much time has passed.

Recorded at Meakusma in 2024, this extract of DOOM TV’s live set is the first release of Between Stations, who start by putting their best foot forward.

Essential listening for fans of: The Fall, Coil, Sunn O))), Toulouse Low Trax and Vladimir Ivkovic.

Matt says: Wow. Hair-raisingly good mixtape from Doom TV who plummet down an opiated cosmic rabbit hole that sounds like the deranged, cyberpunk smack child of Daniele Baldelli, Ron Hardy and Vladimir Ivkovic. Freaks don't wanna miss this!
