BNS SESSIONS

The Soundscapes — Brazilian duo Rodrigo and Raphael Carvalho — played their first show together at the age of 14 at a bar in their home city of Maringá. They moved to São Paulo in their early twenties, where they played in a number of distinguished bands in the Brazilian underground, opening for Yo La Tengo, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Superchunk, Stephen Malkmus, and The Make Up. They arrived in New York City in 2003 on a quest to grow personally and artistically, and found a new creative outlet together in The Soundscapes. Since forming in 2006, they have found an enthusiastic audience, played at venues like the Bowery Ballroom, the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, and even the sidewalks of Brooklyn during the annual Make Music New York Festival. They boast a musical connection that transcends that of other bands. As brothers, they move together in perfect musical harmony, weaving melodic and angular guitars over hard-hitting drums and hook-laden vocals. They exude the kind of passion they did at that first show in Maringá—full of youthful creative energy, and an urgent need to reach their audience's hearts and minds through their ears. Inspired by pioneering bands like Sonic Youth, Fugazi, The Clash and My Bloody Valentine, as well as the aesthetics of the 'Madchester' scene, the Carvalho brothers have impressively boiled down their influences into vibrant engaging music, as displayed on their debut LP, "Freestyle Family". The album is a real tour-de-force, consisting of ten tracks produced, recorded and mixed by John Davis at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn, NY.
