Archie Shepp / Bill Dixon Quartet

Archie Shepp / Bill Dixon Quartet

During the period of 1961-1963, saxophonist Archie Shepp and trumpeter Bill Dixon co- led a group that varied in size between a quartet, quintet, and sextet, depending on the gig. However, their only recorded works together consist of the studio quartet album made for Savoy in October 1962, and presented here in its entirety. Both musicians belonged to the avant- garde of free jazz and their celebrity had yet to arrive during the time they worked together.

"After hearing this set, there can be no doubt that the new freedom in jazz is beginning to find direction. Shepp's solos, based on jazz roots, are fascinating, full of wit and convincing. He keeps a listener with him, and he never lets him down. And it simply has not been heard any place before. Listening to Shepp play is experiencing the essence of the 'new thing' and it is very exciting." - **** ½ Bill Mathieu, DownBeat

    Blasé

Florida-born saxophonist, composer, poet, actor and playwright Archie Shepp was one of the most articulate exponents of politicized black culture in the late ‘60s, a time of enormous upheaval and radical thought. Relocating to Paris he made a number of highly influential albums, such as Blasé, that broached the essential themes of freedom and racial equality, and tapped into the bedrock of African-American music. Gospel and blues were a major part of the work, which also had a strong avant-garde sensibility. The band featured stellar vocalist Jeanne Lee and members of Art Ensemble Of Chicago. These trailblazing artists who combined jazz, poetry and radical politics made a definitive musical statement. “This re-mastered version of a seminal album still has great musical and emotional power... “ Kevin Le Gendre

      Attica Blues

This is a previously Japan-only 7” featuring two tracks originally released on Shepp’s 1972 classic soul-jazz LP, ‘Attica Blues’. A powerful mix of psychedelic soul & jazz that retains Shepp’s political sentiment of his earlier works. ‘Attic Blues’ is a huge funk-soul composition, referring to a mass shooting of inmates at Attica Prison. Henry Hull’s vocal sits on top of bass, layered percussion, wah-wah guitars, plus large horn and string sections to create a massive sound. The big band, almost soundtrack-esque, ‘Quiet Dawn’, is sung by the composer’s 7-year old daughter. She floats on top of piano, strings, drums and rich layers of percussion
